Opis:
Safety issues related to work-site conditions often deal with potential worker exposure to infectious airborne microorganisms due to their dissemination in indoor air and contamination of surfaces. Germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) radiation is used in health-care settings and other occupational environments for microbial inactivation. In this study, a new methodology for determining the efficiency of GUV microbial inactivation of surfaces was developed and evaluated. The method utilizes identical chambers in which test microorganisms are irradiated on agar surfaces at different humidity and irradiation intensity levels. The effects of GUV intensity and exposure time on microbial inactivation were examined for Micrococcus luteus and Serratia marcescens. It was found that at low humidity levels (20-25%) both organisms can be inactivated with at least 95% efficiency if the GUV intensity exceeds 50 /zW/cm2 for at least 3-5 min (corresponding to a dose of ~ 1 0 mJ/cm2). The radiation dose needed for effective inactivation of S. marcescens, as measured by a UV meter near the microbial sample, was found not to be affected by the humidity level, whereas that of M. luteus increased at higher humidities. The findings of this study can be used to determine sufficient GUV inactivation doses for occupational environments with various microbial contaminations.

Zanieczyszczenie powietrza w Warszawie ołowiem i chromem oceniono na podstawie akumulacji tych metali w mchu Sphagnum recurvum P. BEAUV. metodą „moss-bag". Badania przeprowadzono w latach 1992-2000 na terenie całego miasta, gdzie znajdowało się 230 punktów pomiarowych. Największe i utrzymujące się przez cały cykl badań zanieczyszczenie zarówno Pb jak Cr stwierdzono w rejonie Huty Lucchini na Bielanach i w pobliżu Dworca Głównego, na granicy Ochoty i Woli. Obszary te można określić jako tzw. „gorące miejsca". Zanieczyszczenie ołowiem najwyższe było w 1992 roku i od tego czasu wykazywało tendencje spadkowe, które przejściowo uległy zahamowaniu w 1998 roku. Natomiast zanieczyszczenie chromem w niewielkim stopniu wzrosło w porównaniu z pierwszymi latami badań.
The level of air pollution by lead and chromium was estimated by the „moss-bag" method. As a bioindicator the moss Sphagnum recurvum was used. The tests were carried out in Warsaw within 1992-2000, at 230 measuring points. Alone the years of research the highest air contamination with lead and chromium were revealed on the area of Lucchini Steelworks, the Bielany district, and on the border line between Ochota and Wola districts - in the area of Główny railway station (former central). These places were the „hot spots" during whole study period. According to obtained results the air pollution with lead showed a falling tendency. This tendency stopped in 1998, despite the use of unleaded petrol. It might be due to intensified car traffic and traffic -jams in Warsaw. However, in 2000 the level of lead was lower again than in the previous years. Air pollution by chromium was increasing from 1992. In 2000 a new area of high chromium pollution near Świętokrzyski Bridge was revealed.

Polskie koleje rozpoczęły proces modernizacji dostosowujących linie magistralne do szybkości ponad 160 km/h. Based on geographical and ecological analysis of the present moss flora occurring in two contiguous glacial cirques Śnieżne Kotły (Western Karkonosze Mts.), the occurrence of 20 species representing arctic-alpine and subarctic-subalpine elements is discussed. The majority of (sub)arctic- (sub)alpine elements (70%) occurred sporadically or very rarely (no more than 5 records), which indicates their general threat. Nine historically recorded species of these geographic elements could not be retrieved during the recent survey, however four of the recently found species have not been found during the systematic survey of historical sites on the Czech, southern, side of Karkonosze Mts. This proves that the northern localization of Śnieżne Kotły cirques favours the survival of relict species. The question of relictness with respect to the Düll's phytogeographical characterization is discussed; only in ten of the (sub)arctic- (sub)alpine species the relict character could be considered as granted due to their present distribution range. The full list of the Śnieżne Kotły present moss flora with the brief characteristics of their ecological distribution has been included, first such attempt since 1930.

As controls on sex, sexuality, and capitalism relaxed in the former Warsaw Pact countries after 1989, pornography and prostitution flourished. The main center of both industries in the 90s in Centra land Eastern Europe was Prague, which also became the favored destination of Westerners eager to explore the "new Paris."Gay porn and male prostitutes were among Prague's attractions. As the Westernmost outpost of the Slavic world, Prague had always had a special place in the Orientalist construct of Eastern Europe. West of Berlin and Vienna, Prague was nevertheless perceived as the East by its German-speaking neighbors. As I have shown elsewhere, conservatives in Eastern Europe regularly conflated sexual dissidence with political dissidence. Valentin Rasputin, for example, said of homosexuality, "That kind of contact between men is a foreign import. If they feel their rights are infringed they can always go and live in another country." A similar reaction to gay pornography and prostitution in Prague can be found in the films of Wiktor Grodecki. Wiktor Grodecki is a Pole who studied film in the US, then returned to Poland in 1992. His three films about Czech rent boys, Not Angels,but Angels (Andělé nejsou andělé 1994), Bodywithout Soul (Tělo bez duše1996), and Mandragora (1997) purport to be objective, honest documentaries in which (in the language of the video box) the boys'' "frankness and need to talk become the engine that drivesthe film." In reality, Grodecki's films are both highly manipulated and highly manipulative in ways that serve to enforce "normal" sexuality while demonizing various "abnormal" sexual practices. At the same time they portray these practices as an import from the colonizing capitalist West.
