Opis:
The eastern Tell Atlas of Algeria is characterized by a complex neotectonic system including lateral strike-slips, and normal and reverse faults. The landscape of the Neogene basin of MilaConstantine acquired its shape due to the perpetual action of tectonic activity, and erosion processes. Neo-tectonics in this basin have affected the geometry of the stream network and the contemporary landscape topography. Our methodology evaluates the active tectonics in this mountainous region by a combination of drainage network and geomorphic indices, namely, the basin-shape index (Bs), stream-length gradient (SL), hypsometric integral (HI), mountain front sinuosity (Smf), basin asymmetry factor (AF), and valley-floor ratio (Vf). The calculated values of the six measured geomorphic indices were used to differentiate the distribution of faults function as well as the relative tectonic activity in the study area. The obtained results from the GIS-based multi-criteria analysis of these indices consist of the index of active tectonics (IAT). Hence, we defined four hierarchic degrees of IAT, namely, very high (VH), high (H), moderate (M), and low (L). The relative active tectonics represents an obvious correlation between morpho-structural features, tectonic activities, and uplift rates. It selects the morphotectonic features and landforms that interpret the tectonic events in the study area. Our results prove that this approach discerns the most active regions related to the neo-tectonic action in the RhumelSmendou drainage basin. The combination of geomatics and field surveys highlights the cliffs which are still rising by using the drainage patterns, the landform model, and the mountain range shape.

Opis:
Morphometric attributes of 705 stromatoporoid specimens from a number of exposures from the Silurian of Podolia (Ukraine) and the Devonian of the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland), representing a wide array of shallow water carbonate sedimentary environments, have been analysed. Taken into account were such parameters as: general shape of the skeleton, shape of the final growth form (living surface profile), upper surface character, latilaminae arrangement, burial ratio and type of initial surface. A number of new ratios has been introduced, designed mainly to improve the mapping of the outlines of the stromatoporoids upper surfaces. All studied specimens were treated as belonging to one group, and relations between particular attributes were tested. The results were analysed in terms of potential environmental factors influencing stromatoporoid morphometric features. Most of the distinguished attributes are common in the studied group and occur in various combinations, with an important exception of parameters designed to reflect the shape of the skeleton’s upper surface, which are distinctly predominated by convex variants. This indicates that surface concavity was a highly undesired feature among stromatoporoids. Upper surface convexity is interpreted herein as a response to the hazard of clogging of the animals pores by tiny sediment particles suspended in the bottom turbid water layer. Common low burial ratios of final living surface profiles and the occurrence of specimens with a smooth upper surface but a non-enveloping latilaminae arrangement are other reflections of this phenomenon. Burial by sediments and redeposition were also important factors governing stromatoporoid development. No direct arguments indicating photosensitivity of stromatoporoids can be deduced from the presented results. The hitherto postulated allometric tendency among stromatoporoids of starting growth as laminar forms and later adopting consecutively higher profile shapes has not been confirmed here. On the contrary, a tendency for gradual elimination of very high profile forms with increasing stromatoporoid size has been observed. The final shape of a stromatoporoid skeleton was always an effect of a combination of various agents.

Opis:
The work presents methodology and evaluation of changes of geometric features of rye grain of Slavic variety after storing in the conditions of load simulated in a laboratory. Pressures of 35, 52 and 70 kPa value were incurred in special cylinders which simulated conditions of storing in a silo. The purpose of the work was to determine the course of changes within geometric features of grains in variable conditions of storing (humidity: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24% and temperature: 6°C and 20°C). Measurements of geometric features were taken with the use of SVISTMET system. The results of the research prove that changes in the grain size (statistically insignificant) occur only in extreme storing conditions (20°C, 52 and 70 kPa) in the conditions of their high moisture (over 20%), which constituted the main factor of these changes. Grain shape, expressed with a defined coefficient, was subject to changes only in the conditions of raised moisture (20-24%) and pressure (70kPa) which is connected with increased elasticity of grains.

Opis:
Pot experiments were conducted in 2006-2008 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and boron fertilization on the morphometric features and yield of coriander. The research showed significant positive effect of increasing nitrogen fertilization on stem length, number of I line side branchings, inflorescences and fruit number per plant and negative effect on I side branching height. With increasing nitrogen fertilization fruit number and fruit yield per coriander plant were higher, and the maximum yield was obtained at the highest nitrogen rate. Coriander reacted to increasing nitrogen rates with an increase of fruit yield per plant, however at the same time decrease of the weight of 1000 fruits was observed, mainly as a result of formation of a greater number of them. In the research, boron fertilization did not differentiate morphometric features or the fruit yield of coriander.

Relief is one of the elements of the contents of a topographic map. Information about relief obtained from topographic maps was used for morphometric analysis. The research attempted to link those features with the origin of relief. Research covered relief types which appear in Northwest Poland and which are of various origin. Selected groups of terrain forms developed during the last glaciation have been researched. They included: frontal lifted moraines, depositional frontal moraines, flat ground moraines, undulating ground moraines, drumlins, kames and sands. The research also covered older, lifted frontal moraines from the Warta river phase of the Middle Poland glaciation. For each of the genetic relief types a test area of 1 sq. km. was chosen. Such morphometric features as relative altitudes, average slope value, the length and number of water courses, number of hills and hollows were analyzed. Establishing morphometric features basing on traditional cartometric measurement is a tedious and time consuming task. Such procedures were usually applied on small areas. Today this type research is significantly facilitated by the optionto use digital maps. Because data can be obtained from a map automatically, analysis can cover larger areas. MapInfo Professional system upgraded with data analysis and calculation applications was used as a platform for research. The results showed that there is a similarity of morphometric features among genetically consistent forms and differences between forms of various origin. It was also noted, that there are differences among genetically similar forms from various glaciations. Existence of characteristic morphometric features of every analyzed genetic type of relief was confirmed by statistic anlysis for which one of the methods of grouping of multi feature objects had been applied. Morphometric features determined through morphometric analysis method can therefore be one of the factors in establishing the origin and age relief.

Opis:
Dermacentor reticulatus is widely distributed dangerous tick that usually lives in the river valleys, boggy forests, meadows, and wooded pastures. Tick populations from various regions may exhibit morphological differences. In our study we compared morphometric features of tarsus in larvae D. reticulatus from Polish and Slovakian populations. I tarsus width, III tarsus length, and length of dorsal setae of I tarsus were significantly higher in Polish populations. Indices of width to length of tarsus I and tarsus III were also significantly different in both populations. The other examined morphologic features were similar, what may result from the same environmental conditions of both populations.
