Opis:
Frequency domain based signal processing methods such as cepstrum analysis, Hilbert Transform based demodulation, cyclostationary analysis, etc have been shown to present a quite effective behaviour in the detection of defects, when applied to the analysis of vibration signals, resulting from gear pairs with one or more defective gears. However, these methods typically require some complex and sophisticated analysis, which renders their application cumbersome for applications requiring unskilled personnel or automated fault detection and trending. Alternatively to these methods, morphological analysis for processing vibration signals has been proposed, addressing the issues of how to quantify the shape and the size of the signals directly in the time domain. Morphological analysis and the resulting morphological index is applied in this paper to a set of twelve successive vibration measurements resulting from a gearbox prior to tooth breakage. As shown, the morphological index is able monitor the evolution of the potential fault, providing a clear warning prior to the breakage of the tooth.

Opis:
The increased production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in plant leaf tissues is a hallmark of a plant's reaction to various environmental stresses. This paper describes an automatic segmentation method for scanned images of cucurbits leaves stained to visualise ROS accumulation sites featured by specific colour hues and intensities. The leaves placed separately in the scanner view field on a colour background are extracted by thresholding in the RGB colour space, then cleaned from petioles to obtain a leaf blade mask. The second stage of the method consists in the classification of within mask pixels in a hue-saturation plane using two classes, determined by leaf regions with and without colour products of the ROS reaction. At this stage a two-layer, hybrid artificial neural network is applied with the first layer as a self-organising Kohonen type network and a linear perceptron output layer (counter propagation network type). The WTA-based, fast competitive learning of the first layer was improved to increase clustering reliability. Widrow-Hoff supervised training used at the output layer utilises manually labelled patterns prepared from training images. The generalisation ability of the network model has been verified by K-fold cross-validation. The method significantly accelerates the measurement of leaf regions containing the ROS reaction colour products and improves measurement accuracy.

Water sensitive paper is often used to evaluate the quality of covering the area with liquid in many applications [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The paper proposes using the chosen image processing methods to obtain information about the droplet diameter from scans of water sensitive papers. For that purpose, arithmetic and morphological operations are employed (Section 2) [15, 19, 20]. The general procedure of extracting the images containing the droplets with diameters of specified classes from the input data is shown (Section 3, Fig. 2). Water sensitive paper is most often used to characterize the plant spraying quality, so the papers obtained during field ex-periments [7] (after the binarization using the Otsu method [9, 17]) were used as the exemplary input images (Figs. 1 and 5). On the basis of the performed analysis, the histograms illustrating quantitative distribution of droplets with diameter contained in chosen classes (Figs. 3 and 5) and the histograms showing the area covered with droplets from each of these classes (Figs. 4 and 7) were obtained. Histograms like these can be used for characteriza-tion of the spraying quality or its usefulness in specific application [10]. The proposed method makes use of efficient methods of image processing, which predestines it for implementation in real time systems [15, 16].

Opis:
The study of the different engineering materials according to their mechanical and dynamic characteristics has become an area of research interest in recent years. Several studies have verified that the mechanical properties of the material are directly affected by the distribution and size of the particles that compose it. Such is the case of asphalt mixtures. For this reason, different digital tools have been developed in order to be able to detect the structural components of the elements in a precise, clear and efficient manner. In this work, a segmentation model is developed for different types of dense-graded asphalt mixtures with grain sizes from 9.5 mm to 0.0075 mm, using sieve size reconstruction of the laboratory production curve. The laboratory curve is used to validate the particles detection model that uses morphological operations for elements separation. All this with the objective of developing a versatile tool for the analysis and study of pavement structures in a non-destructive test. The results show that the model presented in this work is able to segment elements with an area greater than 0.0324 mm2 and reproduce the sieve size curves of the mixtures with a high percentage of precision.

Our aim is to discuss three approaches to the detection of defects in continuous production processes, which are based on local methods of processing image sequences. These approaches are motivated by and applicable to images of hot metals or other surfaces, which are uniform at a macroscopic level, when defects are not present. The first of them is based on the estimation of fractal dimensions of image cross-sections. The second and third approaches are compositions of known techniques, which are selected and tuned to our goal. We discuss their advantages and disadvantages, since they provide different information on defects. The results of their testing on 12 industrial images are also summarized.

Opis:
Adequate and concise representation of the shape of irregular objects from satellite imagery is a challenging problem in remote sensing. The conventional methods for cartographic shape representation are usually inaccurate and will provide only a rough shape description if the description process is to be fully automated. The method for automatic cartographic description of water basins presented in this paper is based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) - a class of neural networks with unsupervised learning. So-called structured SOM with local shape attributes such as scale and local connections of vertices are proposed for the description of object shape. The location of each vertex of piecewise linear generating curves that represent skeletons of the objects corresponds to the position of a particular SOM unit. The proposed method makes it possible to extract the object skeletons and to reconstruct the planar shapes of sparse objects based on the topological constraints of generating lines and the estimation of local scale. A context-dependent vertex connectivity test is proposed to enhance the skeletonization process. The test is based on the Markov random chain model of vertices belonging to the same generating line and the Bayesian decision-making principle. The experimental test results using Landsat-7 images demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed approach and its potential for fully automated mapping of hydrological objects.

This paper analyses cross-shore bathymetric profiles between Władysławowo (km 125 of the Polish coastal chainage) and Lake Sarbsko (km 174) done in 2005 and 2011. Spaced every 500 m, they cover beach topography from dune/cliff crests to a seabed depth of about 15 m. They were decomposed by signal processing techniques to extract the monotonic component of beach topography and to perform a straightforward assessment of wave energy dissipation rates. Three characteristic dissipation patterns were identified: one associated with large nearshore bars and 2–3 zones of wave breaking; a second, to which the equilibrium beach profile concept can be applied; and a third, characterized by mixed behaviour. An attempt was then made to interpret these types of wave energy dissipation in terms of local coastal morphological features and the underlying sedimentary characteristics.

Presented here is a system for an automatic analysis of Czech morphology mainly based on pattern recognition of linguistic forms according to the linguistic Prague school’s paradigm “form – value.” Taking into account the text and the context allows for the processing of “big data.” This system is based on the concept of calculability. Czech has a very high degree of calculability thanks to a very favorable phonological evolution. Furthermore, the correspondence between what is said and what is written is exact. The experience drawn from this work made it possible to design a grammar course taught for several decades to the satisfaction of the learners. However, the feasibility of this analysis would be demonstrated at best by making entries to a Czech general dictionary.

Opis:
Pea gravel is a kind of a coarse aggregate with a specific particle size used to fill the annular gap between the lining segments and the surrounding ground when tunnel construction with shield machines is performed in hard rock. The main purpose of the present study is to propose quantitative morphological indices of the pea gravel and to establish their relations with the void content of the aggregate and the compressive strength of the mixture of pea gravel and slurry (MPS). Results indicate that the pea gravel of the crushed rock generally have a larger void content than that of the river pebble, and the grain size has the highest influence on the void ratio. Elongation, roughness and angularity have moderate influences on the void ratio. The content of the oversize or undersize particles in the sample affects the void ratio of the granular assembly in a contrary way. The compressive strength of the MPS made with the river pebble is obviously smaller than that of the MPS made with the crushed rock. In the crushed rock samples, the compressive strength increases with the increase of the oversize particle content. The relations between the morphological properties and the void content, and the morphological properties and the compressive strength of the MPS are expressed as regression functions. The outcomes of this study would assist with quality assessments in TBM engineering for the selection of the pea gravel material and the prediction of the compressive strength of the MPS.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparison of results of the automatic extraction of built-up areas, based on fractal analysis and granulometric maps, in the aerial images. Built-up areas as a land-use class can be clearly seen in an aerial or satellite image, due to its high granularity, but for the same reason they are very difficult to extract using a “traditional” non-contextual, pixel-based classification. Both approaches presented in the paper, using fractal analysis and morphological granulometry, base generally on a pixel-based classification, but performed on images reviously processed using these two types of processes. Fractal analysis consists in an empirical computing of fractal dimension of parts of an image, using a box-counting method. Such an approach generates an image where pixel values are equal to a fractal dimension values of their neighbourhood. Since we can interpret a fractal dimension as a level of granularity, a simple reclassification of such an image can improve a performance of an automatic extraction of built-up area effectively. The approach based on a morphological granulometry creates a number of granulometric maps – images where pixel values mean an amount of objects of certain size in a set neighbouring fragment of an image. This way a number of these images can be processed using a pixel-based classification, to perform an effective extraction of built-up areas in an image. The results of the presented approaches have been compared to the reference mask obtained basing on a visual interpretation of the image.
