Opis:
Comparison of the sperm structure in individual groups of Anurans shows that spermatozoa are very various. In all amphibian species sperm have an acrosome. An axial perforatorium located in the endonuclear channel is present in spermatozoa of basal anuran families. A conical perforatorium surrounds the front part of the nucleus. This structure has been secondarily lost in some anurans. There is a fossa in the basal end of the nucleus, in which the centriola is placed. Movement organ (tail) is usually composed of the axoneme and the axial fiber. Sperm provided with two flagella have developed independently about 7 times during the evolution of Anura. Analysis of the above considerations indicates three main trends in the evolution of Anuran sperm where can be distinguished: 1) modification of perforatorium, involving the reduction of axial perforatorium, conical perforatorium development or loss of both of these structures; 2) modification of the basal part of the nucleus by reduction of fossa, or development of a second fossa; 3) modification of the tail due to the disappearance of the axial fiber, undulating membrane or development of additional axoneme. Comparing the structure of Anuran spermatozoa it can be concluded that the comparative spermatology does not provide evidence for affinities of individual animal groups.

The aim of the work was characterization of morphological diversity and DNA polymorphism of common oat landraces. 25 Morphological traits and DNA polymorphism have been examined using AFLP methods. It has been found, that identification of oat landraces is possible based on the examined morphological traits. The examined accessions were differentiated by traits important for intraspecific taxonomy of oat: type of panicle, presence of awns, colour of grain, as well as other morphological traits, such as shape of panicle, rigidity of stem leaves, and type of awns. Relationships of morphological traits of leaves, grains, and stem with some DNA fragments suggesting presence of molecular markers of these morphological traits have been found. Morphological similarity of landraces doesn’t correspond to affinity complied with DNA similarity of these objects...

Environmental adaptation of molluscs during evolution has led to form biomineral exoskeleton – shell. The main compound of their shells is calcium carbonate, which is represented by calcite and/or aragonite. The mineral part, together with the biopolymer matrix, forms many types of microstructures, which are differ in texture. Different types of internal shell microstructures are characteristic for some bivalve groups. Studied bivalve species (freshwater species – duck mussel (Anodonta anatina Linnaeus, 1758) and marine species – common cockle (Cerastoderma edule Linnaeus, 1758), lyrate Asiatic hard clam (Meretrix lyrata Sowerby II, 1851) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis Linnaeus, 1758)) from different locations and environmental conditions, show that the internal shell microstructure with the shell morphology and thickness have critical impact to the ability to survive in changing environment and also to the probability of surviving predator attack. Moreover, more detailed studies on molluscan structures might be responsible for create mechanically resistant nanomaterials.

‘Žutica’ is the most widespread olive variety of Montenegro, accounting for as much as 98% of olive trees in the southern part of Montenegrin coastal area – Bar subarea. The primary purpose of variety ‘Žutica’ is olive oil production due to its small fruits and high oil content, although it is also much appreciated as a table olive, prepared in local ways as green and black. As ‘Žutica’ is an old olive variety there are some phenotypic differences recorded in the fruit properties. Here we evaluated 22 accessions from the area of Bar and Ulcinj, where this variety is very widespread (almost mono-varietal), for 34 parameters of the fruit and endocarp. Significant differences in fruit properties were observed in the accessions. Average fruit size in nine accessions was above 3.5 g and in two accessions more than 4.0 g. Number of fruits per kg ranged from 224 to 330. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to group the accessions and evaluate the morphological variability. The accessions clustered into two groups, with two off group accessions of the highest fruit weight. The results showed differences among individuals, especially for large fruit accessions that should be investigated further.

Opis:
The genus Nicotiana is one of the largest in the Solanaceae family and includes more than 80 species. The most well-known and widespread species of the genus Nicotiana is tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), within which there are numerous cultivars. Tobacco is one of the most important industrial plants in Poland and worldwide. The great diversity within the genus makes it an excellent source of variation in a narrowing gene pool and can be used in breeding programmes. Studies of Nicotiana species also concern mechanisms of polyploidisation and evolution. There are also model species within the genus. However, in order to make full use of the collected germplasm resources, a detailed knowledge of the collection materials is necessary. While there are various reports in the international literature describing specific issues, the aim of this paper is to indicate the diversity of species in the genus Nicotiana as a whole on the basis of our own research and available studies. This review covers the characterisation of the genus Nicotiana in terms of origin and geographical distribution, as well as cytogenetic and molecular differences between species. An important aspect is the presentation of the morphological diversity of Nicotiana accessions and the variation in the most important tobacco alkaloids. A very important issue is the resistance of Nicotiana species to bacterial, fungal and viral diseases, which allows their use in resistance breeding.

Opis:
The study of the morphology of pollen concerned eight species of the genus Taraxacum. Seven types were chosen with a different number of chromosomes belonging to the section Palustria: Taraxacum paucilobum 2n = 3x = 24, T. subdolum 2n = 3x =24, T. subpolonicum 2n =3x = 24, T. vindobonense 2n = 4x = 32, T. trilobifolium 2n = 4x = 32, T. mendax 2n = 5x = 40, T. portentosum 2n =? and one type from the section Obliqua – T. platyglossum 2n =?. Pollen from all the examined species was observed by SEM microscopy. A distinct relation exists between the morphology of pollen and the way of reproduction. Pollen of triploidal species, being compulsory apomicts, is characterized by a great variability of the size and a high percentage of deformed pollen grains. Tetraploids, being optional apomicts, produce regular pollen with a relatively even size. The regular type of pollen in pentaploidal Taraxacum mendax and in species with an unknown number of chromosomes (Taraxacum portentosum and T. platyglossum) suggests that these taxa are optional apomicts.
Studia nad morfologią pyłku przeprowadzono dla ośmiu gatunków rodzaju Taraxacum. Wybrano siedem gatunków o zróżnicowanej liczbie chromosomów należących do sekcji Palustria: Taraxacum paucilobum 2n = 3x = 24, T. subdolum 2n = 3x =24, T. subpolonicum 2n =3x = 24, T. vindobonense 2n = 4x = 32, T. trilobifolium 2n = 4x = 32, T. mendax 2n = 5x = 40, T. portentosum 2n = ? oraz jeden gatunek z sekcji Obliqua – T. platyglossum 2n = ?. Pyłek wszystkich gatunków obserwowano w skaningowym mikroskopie elektronowym SEM. Istnieje wyraźna zależność pomiędzy morfologią pyłku a sposobem rozmnażania. Pyłek gatunków triploidalnych, będących obligatoryjnymi apomiktami charakteryzuje się dużą zmiennością wielkości oraz wysokim odsetkiem ziaren zdeformowanych. Tetraploidy będące apomiktami fakultatywnymi wytwarzają pyłek regularny, o stosunkowo wyrównanej wielkości. Regularny typ pyłku u pentaploidalnego Taraxacum mendax oraz u gatunków o nieznanej liczbie chromosomów (Taraxacum portentosum i T. platyglossum) pozwala przypuszczać, że taksony te są apomiktami fakultatywnymi.

Opis:
Variation of traits is a primary need of any plant breeding effort that involves the natural evolution and causes sustainable crop production under different environments. Fifty six bread wheat genotypes grown during the growing season of 2012/2013 were evaluated for variability characteristics for eighteen traits i.e., stem diameter, plant height, leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, tiller number, internode length, peduncle length, spike length, floret number, spikelet number, grain number, awn length, grain diameter, grain length, number of days to flowering, thousand seed weight and grain yield. Significant differences were observed for all the traits studied, indicating a considerable amount of variation among wheat genotypes for each trait. The estimates of the coefficient of variation (CV) were high for grain yield and number of tillers per plant. Spike length varied from 8.95 in G28 to 4.74 in G40, while genotype G20 had the maximum floret number (19). According to thousand seed weight, genotype G55 had the maximum thousand seed weight (45.57 g) and genotype G4 had the maximum grain yield performance (6936.3 kg ha-1). The information on diversity among the agro-morphological traits of the studied wheat genotypes will be helpful to plant breeders in constructing their breeding materials and implementing selection strategies.

Communities of large mammals exhibit changes in morphological diversity through space and time; changes that are possibly correlated to distinct aspects of the physical environment. Here, I explore shape changes in the trophic apparatus of large carnivore guilds, comparing extant communities with Quaternary ones, from peninsular Italy. Mandibular shape is quantified through geometric morphometrics and its disparity is computed for each carnivore guild. Patterns of morphospace occupation through space and time reveal that extant carnivore guilds are negatively influenced by number of artiodactyls. Very productive ecosystems show low values of morphological disparity because species tend to occupy central regions of the morphospace rather than extreme areas. Disparity of mandibular corpus shape remains relatively stable throughout the Quaternary in the large carnivore communities of the Italian peninsula. They exhibit similar values to extant guilds because the trophic apparatus did not evolved important morphological novelties. Interestingly, carnivore guilds of the late Pliocene (3.5 Ma) and early Pleistocene (0.8 Ma) show over−dispersed or random morphospace occupation because of a depleted fauna, precluding successive structural changes. The same applies for the extant European carnivore guild as a result of recent extinctions without replacement.

Opis:
A new theoretical morphological model is proposed for the analysis of growth, form and morphospace of ammonoid shells. In this model, the shape of a radial cross section through the shell is simulated by “piggybacking” of successive whorls. The “piggyback whorls model” is defined in terms of the enlarging rate of the perimeter and the proportion of the dorsal wall to the whorl periphery, if an isometric relationship is assumed between perimeter and area of the cross−sectioned whorl. Allometric coefficients on these growth parameters determine how compressed and evolute shells are formed. The present model successfully reproduced some correlations among purely geometric variables that have been reported in previous works and were also observed in our biometric analyses. This model yields a hypothesis of “constructional linkages” between aperture shape and coiling geometry that might provide a functional coupling between hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characters. The model may partly explain Buckman’s Law of Covariation between rib features and shell shapes.

The study determined the morphological and genetic diversity among nine cultivars of peppermint (Mentha × piperita L.): ‘Almira’, ‘Asia’, ‘Chocolate’, ‘Citaro’, ‘Granada’, ‘Grapefruit’, ‘Multimentha’, ‘Swiss’ and ‘Variegata’. The leaves of the peppermint cultivars were characterized by substantial variation in morphology and size. The leaves of ‘Multimenth’, ‘Grapefruit‘ and ‘Swiss’ were largest, and those of ‘Swiss’ were considerably elongated. The ‘Almira’ cultivar had the smallest leaves. Although similar leaf morphology was observed in ‘Asia’, ‘Citaro’ and ‘Chocolate’, in ‘Grapefruit’ and ‘Multimentha’ and in ‘Swiss’ and ‘Variegata’, no two cultivars were the same in this respect. Differentiation of tested peppermint cultivars were also confirmed at genetic level. Genetic diversity among tested cultivars ranged from 0.388 to 0.846. The most different were cultivars Almira and Citaro.

Opis:
The wild-harvested fruit of Vaccinium oxycoccos (European cranberry) is used medicinally in many European and North American countries; the plant, however, is seldom cultivated. In order to optimize the collection strategy and improve the horticulturally important characters of V. oxycoccos clones, comprehensive investigations of the species are necessary. In the present study we investigated the phenological, morphological and genetic diversity of 29 clones originating from two wild populations growing in two strictly protected Lithuanian reserves, Čepkeliai and Žuvintas. During an ex situ collection at Kaunas Botanical Garden, we observed great phenological variation between the collected V. oxycoccos clones. The following morphological traits most clearly distinguished our study clones: leaf size, berry shape, berry size and fruit colour at full maturity. The genetic variation of V. oxycoccos clones from the two populations was assessed using RAPD and SSR. RAPD analysis conducted with 9 primers resulted in 146 polymorphic loci for the total sample, and SSR analysis with 5 primers revealed 29 alleles for the total sample. A greater degree of polymorphism was demonstrated for the Čepkeliai population than for the Žuvintas population. The study allowed the selection of several clones having promising morphological traits for further testing in the field.
