    This is the first publication which systematically discusses the material heritage associated with Dutch settlements in terrains which historically belonged to Mazovia. A presentation of 191 Mazovian villages, arranged in alphabetical order and located upon the basis of Dutch law. The descriptions, enhanced with fragments of historical maps, contain information about the residential and farm buildings, and take into account their localisation, current preservation, types of construction, the layout of the interiors and a characteristic of the brick. The catalogue contains data pertaining to churches and cemeteries. The Dutch settlement movement developed from the seventeenth century to the 1940s, and was connected with the overflow land along various rivers, including the Vistula, the Bug and the Wkra. The specific type of farming was adapted to the natural conditions, which, in turn, determined given construction solutions and affected the shaping of the local landscape. The Dutch settlements in Mazovia comprise an exceptional phenomenon, whose merits are enhanced by the fact that they were one of the few to have survived in Poland on such a scale despite the severance of the cultural continuum after the second world war. The catalogue is supplemented by a copious bibliography and maps presenting the range of the phenomenon within the former boundaries of Mazovia.

Odkrycia dokonano podczas prac inwentaryzacyjnych prowadzonych przez zespół Katalogu Zabytków Sztuki w Polsce. Analiza treści aktów wizytacji świątyni z lat 1727, 1759 i 1784 pozwoliła na prześledzenie przekształceń obiektu w XVIII w. i opracowanie domniemanych rekonstrukcji stanu z początku XVIII w. i po 1771 r.
    The article discusses the large sections of a 17th-century iconostasis hitherto unknown to scholars and the conservation services, which have been discovered in the attic of the filial Orthodox church of St John the Theologian in Nowoberezowo (Hajnówka district). It is the earliest extant iconostasis in the Podlachia region and most probably one of the oldest in the lands of the former Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. Its discovery was made during inventorying procedures carried out by the Catalogue of the Monuments of Art in Poland. An analysis of the records of church visitations from the years 1727, 1759 and 1784 has made it possible to trace the transformations in the structure of the iconostasis in the course of the 18th century and to propose its conjectural reconstructions in the condition it had in the early 18th century and after 1771.

    Artykuł stanowi krytyczną analizę dwutomowej publikacji: Katalog zabytków sztuki. Województwo podlaskie (białostockie). Powiat bielski, wydanej w ramach serii: „Katalog Zabytków Sztuki w Polsce” przez Instytut Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie zawartości Katalogu oraz ocenę jego przydatności do dalszych, szczegółowych badań nad historią regionalną. Autor zwraca uwagę na wysoki poziom merytoryczny recenzowanej pracy, w której wykorzystano bogaty materiał źródłowy pozyskany dzięki kwerendzie przeprowadzonej w zasobach archiwów krajowych (np. Archiwum Państwowe w Białymstoku), zagranicznych (Rosyjskie Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne w Petersburgu) oraz w innych instytucjach kultury (np. Wojewódzki Urząd Ochrony Zabytków w Białymstoku). W opracowaniu Katalogu skorzystano również z licznych naukowych monografii, artykułów i opracowań obejmujących ponad 300 pozycji bibliograficznych. Do walorów Katalogu, oprócz aparatu naukowego, należy wysoka jakość edytorska. Katalog prezentuje bogaty materiał ilustracyjny opatrzony szczegółowymi opisami w postaci rysów historycznych siedemdziesięciu dwóch miejscowości wraz z charakterystyką znajdujących się tam obiektów zabytkowych zobrazowanych na 1427 kolorowych fotografiach. Autor poszerza informacje na temat niektórych obiektów zabytkowych opisanych w Katalogu, wykorzystując do tego archiwalia przechowywane w zasobie Archiwum Państwowego w Białymstoku. Są to m.in. XX-wieczne fotografie przedstawiające ratusz w Bielsku Podlaskim oraz dokumentacja aktowa dotycząca stanu technicznego Kościoła p.w. Matki Boskiej z Góry Karmel w Bielsku Podlaskim po pierwszej wojnie światowej. Omówiony artykuł recenzyjny w syntetyczny sposób prezentuje potencjalnemu czytelnikowi treść Katalogu. Podkreśla również jego naukową przydatność dla historyków sztuki i prawa oraz regionalistów.
    This paper constitutes a critical analysis of a two-volume publication: Katalog zabytków sztuki. Województwo podlaskie (białostockie). Powiat bielski [A Catalogue of Artistic Monuments. Podlaskie (Białystok) Voivodeship. Bielsk County], published in a series “A Catalogue of Artistic Monuments in Poland” by the Institute of Art at the Polish Academy of Sciences. The author of this article presents the contents of the Catalogue and evaluates its usefulness for further, detailed research on regional history. He draws attention to a high substantive level of the reviewed work which was based on rich source material acquired by means of queries conducted in the Polish archives (e.g., State Archives in Białystok), foreign ones (Russian State Historical Archive in St. Petersburg), and other cultural institutions (e.g. Voivodship Office for the Protection of Historical Monuments in Białystok). The Catalogue also uses data from numerous scientific monographs, articles, and elaborations containing over 300 references. One of its assets, apart from the scientific content, is high editorial quality. The Catalogue presents rich illustrative material provided with detailed descriptions in the form of historical outlines of seventy-two settlements with the characteristics of included monuments, depicted in 1,427 colourful photographs. The author expands information on some of the monuments described in the Catalogue using archive materials stored in the National Archives in Białystok. These are e.g.: 20th-century photographs showing the town hall in Bielsk Podlaski and archival files on the technical condition of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Mt. Carmel in Bielsk Podlaski after the First World War. The potential reader of the discussed review article is offered a synthesis of the Catalogue’s contents. It also highlights its scientific usefulness for art historians and regionalists.

    Opis:
    On the example of works on ’’The Catalogue of Cracow’s Historic Monuments”, describing a few hundred monuments of architecture and several thousand works of painting, sculpture and artistic craftmanship, the au thors present problems of the cataloguing of monuments in big town complexes. Assuming th a t the cataloguing is to cover structures put up before World War II Cracow has now several thousand buildings of historic interest th a t represent different periods. The idea to catalogue monuments arose in Cracow already in the 18th century (first publications appeared about 1900). More comprehensive studies were undertaken only after 1945 and were included into the works on ’’The Catalogue of Arct Monuments in Poland”, prepared by the Institute of the Polish Art attached to the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1973 a special institution for works on the cataloguing was established, namely the Team (at present th e Workshop) for th e Cataloguing of Historic Monuments of the Town of Cracow, headed by Jan Jamek and emploing 5 permanent workers and about 20 co-workers. Their task is to carry out field works according to the ir specialization, e.g. miniature codices in libraries are prepared by a rt historians engaged in this problem. The cataloguing of Cracow’s historic monuments has been done in nearly 70 per cent. The works carried out so fa r have brought a number of discoveries — out of 1,000 photographs published in one p a rt of ’’The Catalogue” almost 800 represent the works th a t have not been known before. A fu rth e r efficient p rogress of the works depends on the training of a sufficient number of specialists, i.e. a rt historians who would recognize and date various objects from different epochs according to the instructions on cataloguing. It is expected th a t works on the cataloguing of Cracow’s historic monuments should be completed in 15-years time, while editorial works will last about 20 years. The whole of ’’The Catalogue of Cracow’s Monuments” ’will consist of 12 parts (altogether 40 books) containing 3,000 pages of the te x t and 12—15 thousand photographs. It will be an important material for a rt historians, architects conservators, and what is most important, it will offer a full possibility to undertake works on thematic catalogues (e.g. of gold works, already being prepared). A vast number of treatises and articles arising as the effect of the works on cataloques prompts the establishment of a specific department for studies on the art of C ra cow biassed in favour of the works on the a rt of the microregion.

    In 2009 the Ministry of Environment has granted the commission of preparing the "Catalogue of geotourist sites" to the working group from the AGH-University of Science and Technology. The "Catalogue…" will include the geosites located in the areas of natural monuments and abiotic nature reserves. The interesting geological structure of Poland is a result of a variety of processes which created numerous geological objects. Many of them reveal both the outstanding aesthetic valours and the fascinating geological history, which may attract the visitors. The aesthetic valours, as e.g., monumental or unusual forms and/or unique character will draw attention of all visitors, despite their level of understanding of geological processes. The geological history will probably attract only a fraction of visitors, particularly professionals, including university students, as well as collectioners and other passionates of Earth sciences. Among thousands of abiotic nature reserves and nature monuments 150 top-class sites will be selected, professionally described and photographed. The English version of this unique book will be available, as well. It is expected that the "Catalogue…" will contribute to promotion of geosites in Poland and abroad. The project will be financed by the National Fund for Environment Protection and Water Management.

    This article attempts to shed more light on the issues of historic values possessed by industrial architecture. Its source base results from the ethnographic research carried out by the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Łódź in the selected districts of the Lublin Voivodeship, i.e. Łuków, Parczew and Radzyń in the years 2004–2013. This research is also a continuation of the work on the Catalogue of industrial buildings of historical value in Poland. The article focuses on the values of industrial facilities to be seen in their style and architectural details, the dangers to their existence and the examples of the undertaken initiatives for the preservation of the industrial architecture – a vital element of our cultural heritage.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą prezentacji problematyki walorów zabytkowych posiadanych przez architekturę przemysłową. Jego bazę źródłową stanowią wyniki badań etnograficznych przeprowadzonych przez Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne w Łodzi na terenie wybranych powiatów województwa lubelskiego, tj. łukowskiego, parczewskiego i radzyńskiego w latach 2004–2013. Badania te stanowią kontynuację prac nad Katalogiem zabytków budownictwa przemysłowego w Polsce. W ramach artykułu skupiono uwagę na atutach obiektów przemysłowych w postaci np. posiadanego stylu czy detali, zagrożeń związanych z ich istnieniem oraz przykładami działań na rzecz ich ochrony jako elementu dziedzictwa kulturowego.

    Artykuł jest próbą zdefiniowania pozaestetycznych funkcji dekoracji w zespole industrialnym. Zespół dawnej klinkierni w Nowogrodźcu powstałej w 1864 roku jest jednostkowym przykładem zachowanego na Dolnym Śląsku założenia industrialnego, w którym oprócz funkcjonalnych cech zakładu, dużą rolę odgrywa bogata i zróżnicowana pod względem chronologicznym i stylistycznym dekoracja elewacji. Występuje ona na wszystkich budynkach zespołu, tworząc unikalny rodzaj plenerowego wzornika asortymentu pochodzącego z lat 1870–1940/2010. Są to fryzy, plakiety, płytki ceramiczne, kształtki terakotowe formy oraz rozbudowane przedstawienia figuralne – zoomorficzne, floralne, fantastyczne, przykłady szkliwa i barwienia ceramiki oraz wzorcowe zestawy dekoracyjne w funkcji reklamy zewnętrznej. Oprócz wartości estetycznej mają one szereg funkcji pozaestetycznych ważnych dla badaczy kultury industrialnej – funkcje normatywne, techniczne, technologiczne, analityczne (stan zachowania ceramiki elewacyjnej), identyfikacji i reklamy zakładu oraz podstaw do wydawania decyzji i podejmowania prac konserwatorskich. Próba odczytania pozaestetycznych walorów dekoracji prezentuje rozbudowane metodologiczne podejście do procedur dokumentacji obiektów industrialnych.
    The article presents the results of documentation works underway at the historical complex of buildings of the former clinker works. They were the basis for entering the site and the unique decorative elements into the register of technological and industrial monuments. The clinker works in Nowogrodziec, built between 1864–1930, are an example of industrial complex in which, apart from purely functional features – the spatial arrangement and the structure of buildings serving technological needs – we also find the ceramic facade ornaments. They are present on administrative and production buildings (pattern shop, mould room, raw materials storage facilities, drying room, furnace rooms, and chimneys). Chronological stratification of the complex made it possible to date the glazes, plaques, ceramic tiles, figures and individual ornamental motifs appearing on the building facades. The ornaments serve also as a presentation of ceramic techniques and technology – colourful glazes and masses. Another characteristic feature of these decorations is the rich variety of motifs, compositions and techniques found frequently within a single building. It constitutes a type of an “outdoor” catalogue of architectural elements, details and terracotta sculpture forms manufactured at the works from the beginning of its operation until 1980’s. The efforts to document the complex made it possible to confirm the hypothesis that the ornaments constituted a standard of reference. In addition to the aesthetic value, they have a number of non-essential functions important for industrial culture researchers – normative, technical, technological, analytical functions (state of the facade ceramics), identification and advertising of the plant and the basis for decision making and conservation. The attempt to read the non-ethical values of the decoration presents an elaborate methodological approach to documentation procedures of industrial objects. Apart from their aesthetic value, the ornaments are normative in character, of importance for conservation or preservation decisions made in connection with the planned revitalization of the site.
