The Remote Sensing Centre has been set up within the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography shortly after launching the first environmental satellite. The main task of the Centre was to use satellite images in research of environment. The Landsat images have been used by the Centre to elaborate the first maps of land use in Poland. Satellite images have also been used to assess the forest damage in Sudety Mountains, elaboration of the satellite maps, assess of the air pollution in the country and elaboration of the soil data bases for Poland. Satellite images acquired in microwaves have been used to map a flood extent in Odra River Valley and to estimate damage caused by the flood. The most diverse application satellite images found in agriculture. They were used for assessment of the stage of crop development, crop yield and production of the cereals in Poland. Several other scientific institutes have also used satellite images in their investigation. One of them was the Institute of Oceanology. It has used satellite images for the Baltic ecosystem monitoring.

Intensive development of infrastructure for fast processing of outsized amount of space-borne data enables now to use the satellite data for operational controlling the state of its environment. In our presentation we show some examples of analysis of processes in marine environment which are possible due to satellite data and algorithms of its processing developed in SatBaltic Project. It concerns supporting of modelling of solar energy inflow to the sea with space-borne input data, identification and analysis of sea ice cover, supporting of oil spill detection, and identification of phenomena which modify spatial distribution of the sea surface temperature.

The new method of a detailed morphodynamic registration of sandy beaches has been presented. The digital oriented photograms have been taken from a stabilised point at least once a day. Occasionally also more often, for example every hour during a storm cycle. The analyses of the photograms are performed in digital mode using special computer software. This digital beach monitoring of the Polish Baltic coast was initiated in summer 2002. The test fields in Polanka Redłowska within Gdynia and Chłapowo near Władysławowo were selected. The beach areas of the length of about 200 m along the shore were registered there. Selected examples of short-term changes of the beach relief were presented. A range of spatiotemporal transformations related to different periods (hours, days, months etc.) was demonstrated.

The Baltic Sea covers an area of 415 000 km2. A typical brackish sea, it is very sensitive to anthropogenic activities. Inorganic nutrients, trace metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons and crude oil products are contaminants studied in the Baltic Monitoring Programme of HELCOM. The data collected by the riparian countries forms the basis for the periodic assessments of the state of the marine environment of the Baltic Sea Area produced by HELCOM every five years. Since 1992 marine nature conservation has been part of the HELCOM convention. According to the third status report issued in 1996, it was the first time that HELCOM could strike a positive balance with regard to the decreasing environmental load. This is also reflected in lower concentrations of harmful substances in fish, marine mammals and seabirds in the Baltic Sea Area. The reasons for this progress are the protective actions initiated by HELCOM and the economic collapse in some of the former East Bloc countries, the latter resulting in an abrupt fall in industrial and agricultural production. Although the restoration of the Baltic ecosystem has only just begun, the protective measures introduced to achieve this aim can serve as an example of how to solve similar problems in other semi-enclosed basins and shelf seas.

A large national project: Development of a satellite method for Baltic ecosystem monitoring (DESAMBEM) for creating mathematical models and a complex algorithm for the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem and its primary production is described. The paper discusses ships’ routes to Polish ports in the Gulf of Gdańsk determined on the basis of data obtained from the Baltic Ship Monitoring System by means of AIS coast stations and defined by the Baltic Sea Hydrographic Commission (BSHC). The measures to regulate maritime traffic implemented by the Polish maritime administration in order to reduce the identified risk of groundings and ship collisions are presented, as well as the author's opinion on their effectiveness.

The aim of this work was to explore the possibilities of utilising the macroalgae accumulating on the Sopot beach, a part of the Gulf of Gdańsk (Baltic Sea). During this work (2004–2006) a range of activities were undertaken: monitoring the occurrence of macroalgae, collection of plant material, taxonomic identification, laboratory analyses of contamination (metals – Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr, Hg; radionuclides – 137Cs, 40K; organic contaminants – polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), the stage of algal degradation and studying possible uses of the plant material collected on the beach. The most suitable way of utilising the plant material seems to be as a biofertiliser. Laboratory growth tests were carried out to assess this possible use; they were successful.

A review of EU legislation and national rules applicable to the assessment of the quality of the marine waters of the Baltic Sea in Poland. A review of the procedures prescribed by law, highlighting some inconsistencies, and pointed to the importance of the innovative approach of the EU Water Directive towards assessing water quality, which now should be based primarily on assessing the health hydrobiont by limiting the amount recommended for the study of chemical indicators of water quality. It pays attention to the progression, and at the same time, retreat from this canon, which manifests itself primarily by gradually increasing the recommended number of chemical indicators of water quality that should undergo mandatory testing - on the road to increasing the number of priority contaminants placed in subsequent acts supplementing and modifying the EU Water Directive.

The main motivation of this paper was to develop acoustical techniques to monitor underwater meadows. The data, collected with down-looking echo sounder, were used to develop method of bottom detection and tracking and measurement of vegetation canopy height in the Puck Bay. This method and its accuracy are discussed in details. The other possibilities of recognition between covered and uncovered bottom were also reviewed. The effectiveness of using side scan sonar in study vegetation spatial distribution is demonstrated.

The research is devoted to assessing the negative impact of the amber-succinite deposit in the Kaliningrad region as one of the sources of complex pollution of the Baltic Sea waters. The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted water bodies in Europe today. There are many natural and anthropogenic factors that cause this ecological situation. Industry is one of the significant contributors to the pollution of the waters of the Baltic Sea. The industrial wastewater discharged into the Baltic Sea often does not comply with the state ecological standards. The wastewater disposal system modernization by creating a recycled water supply is one of the most effective ways to reduce the negative impact of industrial wastewater on the Baltic Sea ecosystem nowadays. This technological solution allows to significantly reduce or to completely prevent the discharge of wastewater into the Baltic Sea.

The coastal zone of the Puck Bay (near Mechelinki cottage), in the area protected within the Natura 2000 network (Puck Bay and Hel Peninsula PLH 220032), is subjected to the influence of two media – wastewaters discharged through a collector of the sewage treatment plant in Dębogórze and brine effluent discharged through a pipeline because of construction of the underground gas storage – UGS Kosakowo. The results of the monitoring studies in 2009, 2012, and 2015 showed that, after 40 years, macrophytes were again noted in the area (in 2012 and 2015). They occur in small amounts, but slightly increase their bottom coverage. It indicates the improvement of the environment state being under pressure of two media and points indirectly to the fact that environmentally friendly technical solutions were applied for discharge of the effluents.
Strefa przybrzeżna Zatoki Puckiej (w rejonie Mechelinek), położona w obszarze Zatoka Pucka i Półwysep Helski PLH 220032 chronionym w sieci Natura 2000, znajduje się pod wpływem oddziaływania dwóch mediów – ścieków zrzucanych głębokowodnym kolektorem z oczyszczalni ścieków w Dębogórzu oraz solanki zrzucanej podmorskim rurociągiem jako efekt budowy podziemnego magazynu gazu – PMG Kosakowo. Wyniki uzyskane w trakcie badań monitoringowych w latach 2009, 2012 i 2015 wykazały, że po około 40 latach braku występowania makrofitów w tym rejonie, od 2012 roku zaczęto notować makrofity zakorzenione w dnie. Występują one w niewielkiej ilości, ale nieznacznie powiększa się zasięg ich występowania. Obserwowane zjawisko wskazuje na poprawę stanu środowiska w rejonie będącym pod presją dwóch mediów oraz pośrednio, że zastosowano dobre dla środowiska rozwiązania techniczne do odprowadzania obu zrzutów.

The spatio-temporal variability of chlorophyl a (Chl a) caused by a sequence of upwelling events in the Gulf of Finland in July–August 2006 was studied using remote sensing data and field measurements. Spatial distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) and Chl a concentration were examined using MODIS and MERIS data respectively. The MERIS data were processed with an algorithm developed by the Free University of Berlin (FUB) for case 2 waters. Evaluation of MERIS Chl a versus in situ Chl a showed good correlation (r2 = 0.67), but the concentration was underestimated. The linear regression for a 2 h window was applied to calibrate MERIS Chl a. The spatio-temporal variability exhibited the clear influence of upwelling events and related filaments on Chl a distribution in the western and central Gulf. The lowest Chl a concentrations were recorded in the upwelled water, especially at the upwelling centres, and the highest concentrations (13 mg m−3) were observed about two weeks after the upwelling peak along the northern coast. The areas along the northern coast of upwelled water (4879 km2) on the SST map, and increased Chl a (5526 km2) two weeks later, were roughly coincident. The effect of upwelling events was weak in the eastern part of the Gulf, where Chl a concentration was relatively consistent throughout this period.

This paper is the second of two articles on the methodology of the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem. In Part 1 the authors presented the set of DESAMBEM algorithms for determining the major parameters of this ecosystem on the basis of satellite data (see Woźniak et al. 2008 – this issue). That article discussed in detail the mathematical apparatus of the algorithms. Part 2 presents the effects of the practical application of the algorithms and their validation, the latter based on satellite maps of selected Baltic ecosystem parameters: the distributions of the sea surface temperature (SST), the Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) at the sea surface, the surface concentrations of chlorophyll a and the total primary production of organic matter. Particular emphasis was laid on analysing the precision of estimates of these and other parameters of the Baltic ecosystem, determined by remote sensing methods. The errors in these estimates turned out to be relatively small; hence, the set of DESAMBEM algorithms should in the future be utilised as the foundation for the effective satellite monitoring of the state and functioning of the Baltic ecosystem.
