- In the paper the properties of magnetorheological (MR) fluids are described. The main parameters of magnetorheological fluids according to applications are characterized. Moreover, the basic characteristics of commercially available fluids, as: magnetization curves, yield share stress versus magnetic field intensity are shown. The multidisc magnetorheological clutch with permanent magnet in magnetic core is presented and the principles of operations are described. Furthermore the proposed modification of clutch discs’ shape, which enables an increase of discs' surface is presented. This modification is made in order to boost clutching torque - the torque transmitted by the clutch. In the next part of the paper magnetic field models for two types of construction and two types of magnetorheological fluid are presented. There are also shown the results of field calculations as magnetic field distributions in the clutch. The clutching torque calculation procedures are described and the results of calculations for different types of clutch construction and magnetorheological fluids are presented. The results of the calculations show that the change of fluids’ types causes a distinct change of clutch parameters, however the change of discs’ shape causes does not cause a significant change of clutch parameters.
