Objectives: Determination of the phases in a stand-to-sit-to-stand task based on a derivative of the parameter with the lowest variance calculated based on the modified symmetry index. Material and Methods: The study group comprised 11 healthy women and 11 healthy men from the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. The examination of the kinematic and kinetic parameters of sitting down and standing up from a chair was carried out using the Vicon Mx system and Kistler force platforms. Results: The modified symmetry index was employed to select the parameters used to choose those with the lowest variance. Consequently, the phases in a stand-to-sit-to-stand task were determined. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the task of sitting down is a reverse task with respect to standing up in terms of the symmetry of the parameters analyzed.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: The administration of steroids during pregnancy up to 34 weeks accelerates the development of fetal lungs and stimulates surfactant production, therefore, it protects premature neonates against infant respiratory distress syndrome. It has been proven that the administration of steroids causes a temporary decrease in the fetal heart rate in fetuses appropriate for gestational age (AGA). How long does the temporary decrease in fetal heart rate (FHR) after steroid administration persist in intrauterine growth restriction fetuses (IUGR)? MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 152 patients from the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gyneacology MUS in Katowice in 2013–2016, divided into two groups: AGA - 109 cases and IUGR – 43 cases. Steroid prophylaxis – betamethasone or dexamethasone was given in both groups. CTG and Monako records at admission and 24 and 48 hours after steroid administration were analysed with assessment of: FHR baseline, bradycardia episodes as well as LTV and STV parameters. All the results were analysed in the Statistica 12PL program. RESULTS: Bradycardia after steroids occurred more frequently in AGA than in IUGR. After the first dose of steroids significantly lower bradycardia was noticed in the AGA group than IUGR (p = 0.0001). The FHR decrease after the first dose of steroids was bigger in the AGA group than in the IUGR group (p = 0.0001). The average STV value after the second dose of steroids was significantly lower in group the AGA group than in the IUGR group (p = 0.006). Oxygen partial pressure was higher in the IUGR group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In the light of the results, it seems that fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction exhibit better tolerance to steroid administration in the form of a less frequent occurrence of bradycardia, higher STV values and smaller fluctuations in FHR.
MATERIAŁ I METODY: Badanie przeprowadzono z udziałem 152 pacjentek Kliniki Ginekologii i Położnictwa SUM w Katowicach, hospitalizowanych w latach 2013–2016, podzielonych na dwie grupy: AGA – 109 przypadków, IUGR – 43 przypadki.

Opis:
Road transport holds for the largest share in the freight transport sector in Europe. This work is carried out by heavy vehicles of various types. It is assumed that, in principle, transport should take place on the main road connections, such as motorways or national roads. Their share in the polish road infrastructure is not dominant. Rural and communal roads roads are the most prevalent. This fact formed the basis of the exhaust emissions and fuel consumption tests of heavy vehicles in real operating conditions. A set of vehicles (truck tractor with a semi-trailer) meeting the Euro V emission norm, transporting a load of 24,800 kg, was selected for the tests. The research was carried out on an non-urban route, the test route length was 22 km. A mobile Semtech DS instrument was used, which was used to measure the exhaust emissions. Based on the obtained results, the emission characteristics were determined in relation to the operating parameters of the vehicles drive system. Road emission, specific emission and fuel consumption values were also calculated.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the activity of upper limb muscles during hand rim wheelchair propulsion and lever wheelchair propulsion at two different velocity levels. Methods: Twenty male volunteers with physical impairments participated in this study. Their task was to push a lever wheelchair and a hand rim wheelchair on a mechanical wheelchair treadmill for 4 minutes at a speed of 3.5 km/h and 4.5 km/h in a flat race setting (conditions of moving over flat terrain). During these trials, activity of eight muscles of upper limbs were examined using surface electromyography. Results: The range of motion in the elbow joint was significantly higher in lever wheelchair propulsion (59.8 ± 2.43°) than in hand rim wheelchair propulsion (43.9 ± 0.26°). Such values of kinematics resulted in a different activity of muscles. All the muscles were more active during lever wheelchair propulsion at both velocity levels. The only exceptions were extensor and flexor carpi muscles which were more active during hand rim wheelchair propulsion due to the specificity of a grip. In turn, the examined change in the velocity (by 1 km/h) while moving over flat terrain also caused a different EMG timing of muscle activation depending on the type of propulsion. Conclusions: Lever wheelchair propulsion seems to be a good alternative to hand rim wheelchair propulsion owing to a different movement technique and a different EMG timing of muscle activity. Therefore, we believe that lever wheelchair propulsion should serve as supplement to traditional propulsion.

Opis:
The article analyzes the environmental costs which consisted of determining the annual cost for gases and particles released into the atmosphere by city buses meeting the Euro VI norm. To this end, exhaust emissions of a city bus equipped with a conventional drive system were performed. The vehicle had a length of 18m and was powered by a CI engine with a swept volume of 10,5 dm3, with a maximum power of 240 kW. In order to measure the ecological indicators, tests were performed in real driving conditions using the PEMS system. The apparatus made it possible to measure the concentration of gaseous compounds and particulate matter in the exhaust, which made it possible to determine the road exhaust emissions of the tested vehicle. The research was carried out on a test route including urban and suburban roads in accordance with legislative guidelines. The measurements showed that the bus met the exhaust emission limits determined on the basis of measuring windows defined in relation to the work generated by the drive system. In addition to information on the emissivity of the vehicle, the annual emissions from city buses meeting the Euro VI standard in Poland were also estimated. The information contained in the central vehicle register for the number of vehicles registered in Poland that meet the latest emission standards has been used for this purpose.

Opis:
Background The aims of this study have been twofold: to attempt to reduce the number of spatiotemporal parameters used for describing gait through the factor analysis and component analysis; and to explore the critical age of decline for other gait parameters for healthy women. Material and Methods A total of 106 women (aged ≥ 40 years old (N = 76) and ≤ 31 years old (N = 30)) were evaluated using a pressure-sensitive mat (Zebris Medical System, Tübingen, Germany) for collecting spatiotemporal gait parameters. Results The factor analysis identified 2 factors – labelled Time and Rhythm – that accounted for 72% of the variation in significant free-gait parameters; the principal component analysis identified 4 of these parameters that permit full clinical evaluation of gait quality. No difference was found between the groups in terms of the values of parameters reflecting the temporal nature of gait (Rhythm), namely step time, stride time and cadence, whereas significant differences were found for total double support phase (p < 0.001). Next, seeking evidence of a critical decline in gait, we selected 3 parameters: total double support, stride time and velocity. We concluded that the women taking part in the experiment manifested significant signs of senile gait after the age of 60 years old, with the first symptoms thereof already manifesting themselves after 50 years of age. Conclusions We show that among 26 spatiotemporal parameters that may be used for characterizing gait, at least a half of them may be omitted in the assessment of gait correctness; a finding that may be useful in clinical practice. The finding that the onset of senile gait occurs in the case of women after the age of 60 years old, in turn, may be useful in evaluating the ability for performing types of physical work that mainly require ambulation. Opis:
Seeking a method to evaluate and monitor the performance of the shot put, discus and javelin throw, we analyzed the transfer of mechanical energy between body segments. Methods: The study was conducted on groups consisting of elite throwers on the Polish National Team for each of the aforementioned sport disciplines. The movements of each throw were recorded using Vicon system and Kistler plates. The power and energy fluctuations were computed for the final acceleration phase of each throw. Results: In all three disciplines studied, we found an average energy loss of 1.63 J/kg generated from shoulder to wrist. The value of generated energy from ankle to torso initially increased in all disciplines, followed by a descent – with the exception of the javelin throw, where there was an average 27% decrease in both hip joints. We found strong correlations between relative amplitude values of energy and the athlete’s personal performance records: –0.8226 (shot put), 0.6008 (discus) and 0.7273 (javelin). Conclusions: Measuring the transfer of mechanical energy between body segments offers a useful method for evaluating the technique of ballistic movements and for monitoring training progress.

Do obliczeń zostały eksportowane położenia środka masy ciała.
The aim of the work was to assess postural stability during archery. Two groups participated in the study: professional archers and amateurs, i.e. people who never shot a bow. The tests were carried out using the Vicon system and Kistler platforms. Body mass center positions were exported to calculations. Next, the CoM distance in 3D space and sample entropy coefficients were calculated. It was shown that the distance of the CoM path in 3D space is significantly (p = 0.0001) longer in archers, similarly as the sample entropy coefficient along the vertical axis (p = 0.0117).

Background Falls constitute an important health issue. They cause significant morbidity, mortality and have marked psychological effects on the individual, too. The aim of this study has been to determine parameters describing human movement strategies for balance and the reaction if balance is lost as a result of an unstable ground, and to attempt to describe the types of falls. Material and Methods The study group comprised 20 volunteers. Kinematic parameters of falling and dynamic stability were measured using the Vicon Motion System and the Biodex Balance System SD. During the test, subjects stood for 20 s on the tilting platform. The analysis was conducted based on the first recordings, when the participants were not prepared for the event and their reactions were natural. A cluster analysis tool was applied to divide the behavior of people during the test. Results Based on motion range for kinematic parameters, the cluster analysis revealed 2 types of human behavior: falling (stepping) and restoring balance. Two types of falls were also observed: side and back falls. Moreover, on the basis of angular values for tilting plate, 4 zones were determined. The frequency of access to these zones by each joint revealed 3 strategies to maintain balance: ankle, knee and hip strategy. Conclusions A set of initial conditions that may be used for future numerical simulations was also determined. Furthermore, the results presented in this study are likely to support the analysis of the effects and the falling patterns. Med Pr 2018;69(3):245–252
