    Opis:
    The author of the article analyzes the narrative role of music in Michael Haneke’s films. In terms of content, three movies are discussed: Funny Games (1997), The Piano Teacher (2001) and Amour (2012). The selection of films was made on the basis of diversed musical plot devices used there. Additionally, these films show how role of music evolve over the years into more profound view inside events horizon, full-bodied commentary to film’s action and liberation from optical invigilation of camera. The goal of this paper is to show why narrative resource has crucial impact on artistic weight of Haneke’s films. The director renounces interpretation of his films by giving them their own life − the life of the open work. The article rises the argument that music supports the strategy of director. Moreover, it indicates that emancipation of the music entails the emancipation of heroes and diegetic reality.

    Even though Gilbert Keith Chesterton remained a political Rousseauism-like radical throughout his life, with time the ideal of political liberty understood in line with the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau found less and less vivid expression inhis writings, leaving the most important element animating them virtually invisible for less knowledgeable readers. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and explain thisfact on the basis of the analysis of one of the most famous poems penned by the English author, entitled To St. Michael, in Times of Peace (1929). The analysis follows the methodology devised by a distinguished Polish scholar, Stefan Sawicki.

    Opis:
    We present an optical signal coupling scheme for slab waveguide surface grating coupler sensors. The proposed solution is based on the use of polymer microlenses. In this work we analyze two types of compact polymer lenses: the aspheric plano-convex lenses and Fresnel lenses. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by the experimental investigation into the optical signal coupling to the test structure of TiO2-SiO2 slab waveguide surface grating coupler using both types of lenses.

    Opis:
    Since sociology deals with the description of society as an abstract whole concept, its cultivation is only possible if sociologists are able to follow sociological imagination - the ability of distancing itself from the actual conditions of life perceived by each person subjectively. The sociological imagination is an open-space perception and understanding of human needs, attitudes, aspirations, and preferences. Its openness involves methodical openness as well. The sociological imagination confronts the difficult task of contemporary sociology to reach what is its proper object. Under the present circumstances it is the people subjected to transformations, caused by globalization processes. One effect of these transformations is to push the public sphere socialitas into the background by international capital and state administration. Burawoy’s postulate of including a new sociological sub-discipline called organic public sociology into the established sociological division is an answer he gives to the question: how is contemporary sociology to reach and animate individuals and groups living on the fringe? Public sociology defined by Burawoy is a project that aims at making the public sphere more vital by awakening civil awareness of how to make use of their status as state citizens in communities. It is also to be treated as an attempt at striving to establish contact between sociology and society and keep in touch with both. Burawoy writes from the vantage point of those below, which makes his narratives sound neo-Marxist in a sense. What is striking in his position is searching for moral strongholds of sociology. It is to be seen both in the line in which he describes the global role of American sociology as a frame of reference for sociology cultivated outside the USA, and where he enhances the status of sociological reflexive knowledge. Besides, the strong moral commitment and deontology that resonate within every inch of Burawoy’s narratives compose the backdrop of public sociology. The project of public sociology presented by Burawoy in 2004 split the sociological environment into three groups: keen adherents, partial adherents, and staunch opponents. This means that the arguments presented by him in different ways appeal to the imagination of those concerned and, as any other arguments, have strong and weak points. The project elaborated by Burawoy undoubtedly proved to be successful if we consider the international debate it initiated, the debate on public sociology and the role of contemporary sociology in general.

    Opis:
    Sentinel lymph nodes are the first lymph nodes in the region that receive lymphatic drainage from a primary tumor. The detection or exclusion of sentinel lymph node micrometastases is critical in the staging of cancer, especially breast cancer and melanoma because it directly affects patient’s prognosis and surgical management. Currently, intraoperative sentinel lymph node biopsies using blue dye and radioisotopes are the method of choice for the detection of sentinel lymph node with high identification rate. In contrast, conventional ultrasound is not capable of detecting sentinel lymph nodes in most cases. Contrast enhanced ultrasound with contrast specific imaging modes has been used for the evaluation and diagnostic work-up of peripherally located suspected lymphadenopathy. The method allows for real-time analysis of all vascular phases and the visualization of intranodal focal “avascular” areas that represent necrosis or deposits of neoplastic cells. In recent years, a number of animal and human studies showed that contrast enhanced ultrasound can be also used for the detection of sentinel lymph node, and may become a potential application in clinical routine. Several contrast agents have been used in those studies, including albumin solution, hydroxyethylated starch, SonoVue®, Sonazoid® and Definity®. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the use of ultrasound techniques in detection and evaluation of sentinel lymph node.
    Węzły wartownicze są pierwszymi węzłami chłonnymi na drodze spływu chłonki z okolicy guza pierwotnego. Wykluczenie lub potwierdzenie mikroprzerzutów w węźle wartowniczym odgrywa istotną rolę w ustalaniu stanu zaawansowania nowotworu, szczególnie nowotworu piersi i czerniaka, ponieważ bezpośrednio wpływa na rokowanie i wybór metody chirurgicznego leczenia. Obecnie śródoperacyjna biopsja węzłów wartowniczych z użyciem niebieskiego barwnika oraz radioizotopów są metodami z wyboru umożliwiającymi zidentyfikowanie węzłów wartowniczych. W przeciwieństwie do biopsji standardowe badanie ultrasonograficzne z reguły nie pozwala na ich uwidocznienie. Dzięki badaniu ultrasonograficznemu z użyciem środka kontrastującego oraz opcji obrazowania właściwych dla ultrasonografii ze środkami kontrastującymi można zdiagnozować położone obwodowo nieprawidłowe węzły chłonne. Metoda ta umożliwia ocenę węzłów w czasie rzeczywistym w każdej fazie naczyniowej, a także na uwidocznienie wewnątrzwęzłowych ogniskowych obszarów „nieunaczynionych”, które reprezentują obszary martwicy lub skupiska komórek nowotworowych. W ostatnich latach w wielu badaniach przeprowadzanych na zwierzętach i u ludzi wykazano, że badanie ultrasonograficzne z użyciem środka kontrastującego może uwidocznić węzeł wartowniczy i stać się rutynowym badaniem diagnostycznym. W badaniach tych zastosowano kilka środków kontrastujących, takich jak roztwór albuminy, skrobia hydroksyetylowana oraz SonoVue®, Sonazoid® i Definity®. Niniejsza praca stanowi podsumowanie obecnej wiedzy dotyczącej zastosowania ultrasonografii w diagnostyce węzłów chłonnych wartowniczych.
