    Plots created by Patrick Süskind are transparent and uncomplicated; they follow a conventional path, seemingly aloof from formal modernist experiments, and close with distinctive endings; in popular reception, they give a sense of confidence that even the most fantastic worlds, derived from the corners of imagination, may be set into a familiar and closed whole. Perhaps this simplicity makes it easy to be satisfied by their seductive plot and steer clear off tracks leading to the content encrypted within the deep structure. The author of the present paper attempts to interpret the short stories: Maître Mussard's Bequest and The Story of Mr Sommer as a metaphorical and grotesque vision of man's existential death anxiety.

    Opis:
    Todesanzeigen als eine stark kulturell geprägte Textsorte sind Träger von Todesbildern, denen die für die jeweilige Sprach- und Kulturgemeinschaft charakteristischen Denk- und Verhaltensmuster zugrunde liegen. Diese konzeptuellen Bilder des Ablebens kommen in historischen Anzeigen insbesondere in der Auswahl von Todesbenennungen zum Ausdruck, die der Mitteilung der Todesnachricht dienen. In dem Beitrag untersuchen wir neutrale und euphemistische Bezeichnungen für das Ableben in Wiener Todesanzeigen aus dem 19. Jh. Dabei fällt das Schwergewicht auf die Identifizierung verschiedener Typen von Todesbenennungen, die im 19. Jh. in Texten der Trauerpost auftreten, wie auch die Darstellung von Zusammenhängen zwischen statistischen Präferenzen für die Auswahl bestimmter Bezeichnungen für das Ableben und kulturspezifischen Konzeptualisierungsmustern, die zur jeweiligen Zeitperiode im kollektiven Bewusstsein von Mitgliedern der Wiener Gesellschaft verankert sind.
    Nekrolog jako jeden z ważniejszych gatunków tekstu, z jakimi stykamy się w komunikacji publicznej na temat śmierci, jest nośnikiem obrazów i wzorców kulturowych związanych z umieraniem zakorzenionych w świadomości zbiorowej danej społeczności. W niniejszym tekście autorka dokonuje analizy neutralnych i eufemistycznych określeń odnoszących się do śmierci w wiedeńskich nekrologach z 2. połowy XIX w. Celem prowadzonych badań jest zidentyfikowanie typów wyrażeń językowych służących do oznaczenia umierania występujących w zgromadzonym materiale oraz wyodrębnienie czynników, w szczególności czynników kulturowych, determinujących preferencje statystyczne w doborze słownictwa związanego ze śmiercią na poszczególnych etapach rozwoju gatunku tekstu ,nekrolog’ w 2. połowie XIX w.
    Obituaries belong to the most important text types in the public communication about death, which is the reason why the choice of language means in these texts reflects culture-specific conceptual patterns connected with dying, characteristic for the particular language and culture community. In this paper, we analyse the neutral and euphemistic vocabulary referring to the act of dying in 19th century obituaries from Vienna newspapers. The main focus of our attention lies on identifying the types of expressions for death occurring in the collected corpus as well as describing the relationship between observed statistical preferences for the use of particular neutral and euphemistic expressions and the culture-specific conceptual patterns, typical of the 19th century community of Vienna.

    There is an allegory of the human body in 2 Cor 5:1–4 that is discussed by many scholars and has many different interpretations. The author of this article joins this discussion and tries to answer the question of what the theological message of this pericope is. The metaphors that make it up can be divided into two groups: 1) home metaphors; 2) metaphors of putting on and taking off of clothes. In his text, Paul arranges them in an antithetical way and refers to two stages of human life: the earthly life of believers, which a person leads in a destructible body and which ends in death, and the future condition of believers, which begins with the reception of the resurrection body. The analysis carried out in the article leads to the conclusion that, in his reflection, Paul does not write anything about the intermediate state which is referred to by the followers of Platonic and Gnostic thought in the Hellenistic environment. He eagerly wishes to stand before the Lord during the Parousia without losing his mortal body in order to pass to eternal life without the experience of death by putting on the glorious body.

    Opis:
    Die Sphäre des Todes hat einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung aller Kulturen. Die kulturspezifischen Konzeptualisierungsmuster und Haltungen gegenüber dem Tod, die sich auch in der Sprache widerspiegeln, können als Visitenkarte der jeweiligen Sprach- und Kulturgemeinschaft betrachtet werden. In dem Beitrag wird die sprachliche Konstruktion des Todes in historischen Grabinschriften auf dem Krakauer Rakowicki-Friedhof untersucht. Den Schwerpunkt der Analyse bilden die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den Aspekten vom diskursiven Bild des Todes, die im analysierten Korpus eine besondere Prominenz aufweisen, der Auswahl von sprachlichen Ausdrucksmitteln und den kulturspezifischen Konzeptualisierungen und Haltungen gegenüber dem Tod.
    Śmierć i umieranie odgrywają istotną rolę w życiu wszystkich społeczności, a wzorce kulturowe wyrażające nasze nastawienie do śmierci wskazują na centralne wartości realizowane w danym kręgu kulturowym. W artykule podjęto próbę rekonstrukcji dyskursywnego obrazu śmierci w XIX-wiecznych inskrypcjach nagrobnych z cmentarza Rakowickiego, najstarszego cmentarza komunalnego w Krakowie. W toku analizy autorka koncentruje się na pytaniu, na ile dobór środków językowych w zebranych tekstach odzwierciedla wzorce kulturowe, które w świadomości zbiorowej konstytuują konceptualne ujęcie obrazu śmierci.
    The death and dying play an important role in the development of all cultures and the conceptual patterns expressing our attitude to death reflect central values realized in the particular language and culture community. In the paper, we analyse the language construal of death in historic grave inscriptions from the Rakowicki Cemetery in Cracow. The focus of the analysis lies on the question, up to which point the choice of linguistic means corresponds with cultural patterns constituting the concept of death in the collective consciousness.
