Opis:
My interest here is to assess the critical reactions raised by the two recent Polish movies: Aftermath and Ida. I claim that controversies that have been brought about by them are the result of a positivistic view on history and on profession of a historian. I try to show that putting those movies in a different perspective – that is the studies on memory and Frank Ankersmit’s philosophy of history – should allow us to reveal their affirmative potential in building a community meant as a space of modern democracy.

Opis:
This paper considers how Frances Itani’s Deafening imaginatively rethinks our understanding of the Great War in the age of postmemory. Seeing as the novel is set in Canada and Europe during the First World War and takes as its protagonist a deaf woman, the poetic attention given to the senses as a horizon of phenomenological experience magnifies the moral bonds that the characters establish in defi ance of both deafness and death. Guided by the theoretical reasoning of Marianne Hirsch, Elaine Scarry, and Alison Landsberg as well as contemporary phenomenological thinking, most significantly that of Edward S. Casey, Steven Connor, Michel Serres, and Jean-Luc Nancy, this paper examines how the novel’s attentiveness to the materiality of the body in regard to the ethical collisions of sound and silence as well as life and death contributes to a poetics of resonance that generates prosthetic memories, turning the anonymous record of war into a private experience of moral endurance inscribed on the ear of historical legacy.

The main aim of the study is to attempt an reinterpretation of the category of “lieux de mémoire” (Pierre Nora) in the context of digitalization process and the functions of the new media in the modern culture. The paper argues that symbolic and historical meaning of “lieux de mémoire” is changing today as a consequence of the strong development of the Internet. According to that fact the “places of memory” really often become a part of Internet, they are “networked”. The article focuses on the analysis of the selected examples of the “networked places of memory” (especially virtual cemeteries and virtual museums). The author discusses the differences between the classical “lieux de mémoire” and the networked ones and tries to show the main distinguishing marks of the new kind of the “places of memory”. The paper refers to the thesis of Andrzej Szpociński, Jan Assmann, Paul Connerton, Mizuko Ito and others.

When Night Passes and When Day Breaks – Between the Past and the Present. Borderlines of Holocaust in Filip David’s WorksThe primary objective of the text is the analysis of Filip David's latest work. The Serbian writer is the author of the novel House of Memories and Oblivions (Kuća sećanja i zaborava, 2014), award for Best Novel of the Year by the NIN weekly (Nedeljne Informativne Novine). On the one hand, the output of this Serbian novelist is of interest to us as a continuation and representation of the contemporary discourse on the Holocaust in Serbia. On the other – we look at the literary realization of the Holocaust topic. The fortunes of the main characters in the novel (children who survived Holocaust) serve as the cases on which we present where the author draws the borderline of the ever-present Holocaust in their lives; how much and in what way the past affects their present; where the borderline of memory, forgetting and oblivion is. Kad padne noć i Kad svane dan - między przeszłością a teraźniejszością. Granice Holocaustu w twórczości Filipa DavidaPodstawowym celem tekstu jest analiza najnowszej tworczości Filipa Davida, autora nagrodzonej Nagrodą Tygodnika NIN („Nedeljne Informativne Novine") powieści Dom pamięci i zapomnienia (2014, Kuća sećanja i zabovrava).

Opis:
Memory of the past in a society, especially one whose members were largely illiterate, was not only a bridge of its kind between the past and the present, but an important – particularly from the point of view of the perception of the practice of social life – guarantee of the truth and a sanction of the state existing in the present. It was on the range and permanence of this memory, on the efficiency of securing it and caring for it, on the effectiveness of the chronometric means used, and finally on the consciousness of its value for the „here and now”, which may be jointly defined as temporal awareness, that the conditions of the legal and economic existence of the inhabitants of the 16th century countryside depended. With a limited participation of written sources in depositing the memory of the peasant population and the development of its temporal awareness, this population first of all used relative chronology, no doubt better understood than any absolute date, as well as relative chronological means. The role of guardians of memory, sometimes formalized and formulated as a legal custom, was played by the oldest members of the community, defined as „rememberers” in inspection documents. The memory of the inhabitants of a Lublin village as a rule did not exceed twenty years, but with the use of genealogical measures also much more distant past was remembered, usually reaching the generation of the grandfather, that is comprising the span of about 60-70 years in this way.

Opis:
Germany is an example of a country which has been implementing transitional justice for decades and is still active in this field. What is more, contemporary Germans have recently come to terms with their not-so-distant past and their negligence in this area by showing the falsehood, backwardness, and injustice as negative foundations of the young Federal Republic. This article evokes the person of Fritz Bauer, the prosecutor in the state of Hessen. His struggle for human dignity and the memory of his achievements after his death exemplify an accomplished case of transitional justice and the memory of it. During his lifetime he contributed to bringing to trial numerous Nazi criminals, even at the cost of habitual threats and disregard. Forgotten for a few decades, Bauer and his legacy have been recently rediscovered and studied. Eventually, Bauer became a movie character and was finally brought back to the collective memory of Germans. The belated, but a well-deserved wave of popularity of Fritz Bauer in the German culture memory proves that reflections on the transitional justice are still topical and important.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is world-renown for its documen- taries and animations. This article examines how the NFB dealt with one specific topic – the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War Two. By analyzing the films produced by the NFB between 1945 and 2018, this study seeks to understand how and why its narratives of the internment changed dramatically over three-quarters of a century. The study deals with six NFB films: Of Japanese Descent (1945), Enemy Alien (1975), Minoru: Memory of Exile (1992), Freedom Has a Price (1994), Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story (2003), and East of the Rockies (2018). Drawing on the postcolonial concepts of the colonizing gaze and hegemony, as well as poststructuralist concepts of the trace and discourses of power, it probes the evolution of the NFB’s cinematic culture and concludes that the NFB’s film legacy parallels a changing public discourse in Canada on this traumatic historical violation of human rights.

This paper is a case study of a prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland). The camp operated between 1914 and 1923. During the First World War it was run by Germans and later, during the Polish-Soviet War, by the Poles. The site provides a context for discussing two issues around archaeological research of the recent past. The first issue is how archaeology can be used to analyse the transformations of landscapes related to modern armed conflicts. The second point deals with the documentation and analysis of the remains of the camp using ALS derivatives. The main conclusion of this paper is that LiDAR technology can be also a useful tool in the context of approaching landscapes from the recent past.

This paper discusses the links between archaeology and contemporary. Tree issues are presented. In the first part of the paper, due to a short reflection concerning the recent economic crisis, it is argued that archaeology is, at its most elementary level, a kind of social and cultural practice. Second issue touches upon the connections between time and materiality in archaeological practice. Finally, the issue of how archaeologies are at the crossroad between history and memory is pointed out. This paper tries to account for archaeologies of the present as a promising field of conducting archaeological research of social and cultural value for the present and future societies.

The author of this paper tries to answer the question whether sins, wrongdoings and injustice done by past generations are inherited. The article presents theoretical reflections on the concepts of individuality and collectivity and their relationships; the themes of collective quilt and collective responsibility and the difference between them and the role and importance of collective memory, not only in context of heroic acts but also in the context of shameful past and misdeeds. The scientific theory is compared with empirical research results on today’s Germany decision-making policy in relation to Second World War tragedy. The presented theoretical background and analyzed material gives base to draw conclusions and answer the hypothesis set at the very beginning.

Developed by the German writer Annett Gröschner, they have been used to reexamine the history of the city – only dimly reflected in the present urban landscape. Her perspective emphasizes the distinctive spatial and architectural organization of the city, particularly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In order to harness her dialec-tical composition of the spacing of-the-past, Gröschner uses the map of various routes on the Berlin public transport network, some inner-city artefacts set along those lines, and also the city map with its constant modifications to create appropriate landmarks through which she [re]constructs Berlin's past-present.

In 2015, as a result of implementing the Ukrainian decommunisation laws, the official name of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War was changed to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. The current exhibition at the museum depicts internalisation of Soviet myths in Ukraine as well as the problem of no explicit guidelines from state authorities regarding an official narrative. Also, developing a new concept of a museum dedicated to the history of Ukraine in the Second World War has been impeded by the ongoing war in the eastern part of the country. This paper discusses mutual relations and mismatches between Ukraine’s politics of history and museum practices. The change of the latter is much more languid and complex than in the case of merely changing street names or dismantling old monuments and erecting new ones.

Assuming a close connection between memory, style and trauma, the author has focused on auto-description of personal experiences, retrospective thoughts, etc. referring to the difficult/traumatic experiences of an individual present in Grażyna Jagielska’s books (cf. the following titles: Miłość z kamienia. The actual analyses of the source material were preceded by an approximation of the genealogy of the trauma, its definition or possible representations, as well as by the discussion of the scientific (including humanistic) evolutions of the interest in critical incidents or their consequences. Moreover, an important point of the considerations was also the question concerning the possibility of a linguistic/discursive approach to the subject issues. As follows from the analytical part of the paper, painful traces of the past are present at various levels of the reviewed (and biographically burdened) texts. The points where the categories mentioned in the sketch title meet are related to the narrative technique, style of expressionand repertoire of symbols used by Grażyna Jagielska, with selected components of the presented world, as well as with the creation of the subject (subjected to unintentional victimisation and aiming to, among other things, explain internal conflicts). Although certain therapeutic values can be assigned to memories, the researcher is of the opinion that the textual updates considered often go beyond this simplified qualification.

In this paper, we attempt to show the fruitfulness of the theory of communicative action for memory studies. Specifically, we intend to demonstrate that concepts characteristic of the discipline, such as “history,” “memory,” and “dialogue,” reflect three types of universal validity claims: “memory” formulates claims to authenticity, “history” formulates claims to truth, and “dialogue” formulates claims to rightness. Thus, it is possible to introduce a seminal Habermasian notion of rationality that rests on validity claims. This notion can serve to integrate, enrich, and identify blind spots in memory studies. Our purpose is to demonstrate the relevance of collective memory to social cohesion (cultural reproduction, social integration, and socialization) and the public sphere (its development and atrophy, rationalization, and colonization).

Opis:
This paper has been based on three assumptions that have been widely discussed in the international political science: (1) there has been a decline of democracy in East–Central Europe (ECE) with the emergence of “velvet dictatorships”, (2) the velvet dictatorships rely on the soft power of media and communication rather on the hard power of state violence that has provoked “cultural wars“ and (3) the basic turning point is the transition from the former modernization narrative to the traditional narrative with “reinventing the past” and “reconceptualising modernity” through the reference to the historically given collective national identity by launching the “politics of historical memory”. The velvet dictatorships have been using and abusing the national history as an ideological drug to consolidate their power. The (social and national) populism and Euroscepticism are the basic twin terms to describe the soft power of the new (semi)authoritarian regimes. They are convertible, the two sides of the same coin, since they express the same divergence from the EU mainstream from inside and outside. Soft power means that the political contest in the new regimes has been transferred from the hard to the soft fields of politics as the fight between the confronting narratives. The victory of the traditionalist–nativist narrative carries also the message that the people are only passive “subjects” and not active citizens, so the field of politics has been extremely narrowed in the “new brave world” in ECE.
