    While presenting a wide range of cultural, historical and political factors which have influen- ced the Polish and the American reception of Miron Białoszewski’s A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising, this article tries to assess the role played in its reception abroad by the fact that the original text existed in several versions (censored and uncensored) and, on its way to print, got fitted out with multiple paratexts (introductions, prefaces and afterwords). Interestingly, there seems to be a connection between these fringe texts, the shaping of the translation as shown by choices made by the translators and editors, the evolving model of what is believed to be the right and proper handling of historical traumas, and the politics of remembrance in diverse historical settings and cultural imaginaries. An in-depth analysis of the details of translation and editorship opens up a series of broader questions about the status of a literary text functioning as evidence of traumatic historic events and the mechanisms of its reception by those directly affected (the family circle) and the people outside (with special attention being paid to the tension between the private and the public, and the normative versus the non-normative).

    The article is an attempt to analyze a specific form of autobiographical writing, which is pet memoir, and in particular — cat memoir. The author, inspired by the works of Éric Baratay, asks questions about the ways in which animal biographies are constructed. Then these reflections are applied to the book Iwan Konwicki, z domu Iwaszkiewicz by Tadeusz Konwicki. Animal biographies are a difficult genre that generates numerous methodological problems, which, moreover, it shares with other directions of reflection developed during animal studies. However, what is expressed by attempts to create these type of descriptions (doomed to failure in the dimension of adopting the full zoocentric perspective) is the restoration of the animal to history. This peculiar historicization of non-human subjects means not only restoring their individualism and agency, but also supplementing the traditional narrative about the past with a previously neglected dimension. The article consists of a theoretical part in which the author recalls the most important concepts related to pet memoirs as a genre of autobiographical writing and examples of its implementation, and an interpretative part concerning Konwicki’s book, in which Ivan… is read with reference to the conventions of traditional biography and the idea of a biography of associated species. As part of the reflection presented in the article, issues such as: animal agency, the role of animals in culture, the animal point of view, anthropomorphization, zoocentric narratives will be taken up.

    Artykuł rozumiany jest jako głos w dyskusji nad miejscem (tekstów) kultury w nauczaniu języka (niemieckiego, jako) obcego na poziomie akademickim. Jego celem jest przedstawienie problematyki włączania literatury wspomnieniowej do procesu glottodydaktycznego oraz ukazanie jej potencjału historycznego-kulturowego wykorzystanego w edukacji językowej, a w szczególności w kształtowaniu szeroko rozumianej kompetencji tekstowej studentów studiów filologicznych.
    The article is understood as a voice in the discussion over the place of (texts) of culture in teaching (German as) a foreign language at academic level. Its aim is to present the issue of incorporating autobiographical literature in the glottodidactic process and to show its historical and cultural potential used in linguistic education, and in particular in shaping of broadly understood textual competences of philological students.

    Życie rodzin galicyjskich zostało utrwalone na kartach wielu wspomnień, pamiętników i powieści autobiograficznych. Na ich podstawie podjęto próbę naszkicowania codzienności rodzin chłopskich, które dominowały w strukturze społecznej Galicji na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Poddano analizie chłopskie publikacje pamiętnikarskie, w celu poznania zwyczajów, obowiązków, trosk i radości ludności oraz oceny ich w aspekcie szans i zagrożeń dla ówczesnej rodziny. Chłopska literatura okazuje się cennym dokumentem przemian, które następowały na przestrzeni lat w galicyjskich wsiach. Autorzy tekstów, będący nie tylko świadkami różnych wydarzeń, ale ich bezpośrednimi uczestnikami, w swoich pracach zamieszczają wspomnienia sięgające najmłodszych lat, dając tym samym wyobrażenie specyfiki życia ludności w ówczesnych czasach. W publikacji poddano analizie teksty opracowane m.in. przez Walentego Kunysza, Ferdynanda Kurasia, Franciszka Magrysia, Jana Stryczka, Wincentego Witosa, Romana Turka, Stanisława Pigonia, Władysława Fołtę. Naszkicowany, na podstawie ich wspomnień, obraz życia galicyjskich rodzin rysuje się dość ponuro i smutno. Każda rodzina doświadczała wielu trosk, wynikających najczęściej z niedostatku, nadmiaru obowiązków domowych, złego stanu zdrowia. Jednak obok nich, jak wspominają pamiętnikarze, pojawiały się chwile radosne, związane np. ze świętowaniem, tradycyjnymi obrzędami i obyczajami. Dzięki temu rodziny galicyjskie były w stanie podołać codziennym obowiązkom, a jednocześnie przyczyniły się do pielęgnowania tradycji i utrzymania narodowej tożsamości.
    The life of Galician families was described in many memoirs, diaries or autobiographies. These sources constituted the basis for at attempt to depict the everyday life of peasant families, which were predominant in Galicia social structure at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The material subject of the analysis comprised peasant memoir publications and the objective was to find out what habits, duties, worries and joys were typical of the Galician people and, to evaluate them with respect to the opportunities and threats for the family at that time. Peasant literature appears to be a precious source of documents that show the changes occurring over the years in the Galician villages. The authors of the texts, who not only witness various events but also participate in them, go back to their earlies memories, which gives an idea of what constituted the characteristics of people’s life at that time. The texts which provided the material for analysis included, but were not limited to, the following authors: Walenty Kunysz, Ferdynand Kuraś, Franciszek Magryś, Jan Stryczek, Jan Słomka, Wincenty Witos, Roman Turek, Stanisław Pigoń and Władysław Fołta. The picture of Galician family life drawn from their memories is rather sad and gloomy. Each family had its own worries result ing mainly from poverty, the burden of household duties or poor health. But parallel to those worries, as the memoir authors point out, were also some joyful moments connected with celebrations, traditional ceremonies and customs. Thanks to such moments, Galician families could cope with everyday responsibilities and contribute to keeping traditions alive and maintaining their national identity.

    One of the first writers from Dubrovnik who has attempted to write a comprehensive history of Turkey was Benedictine Louis de Crieva called Tuberon (1458-1527). In the sixth book of his political memoir Commentarii de temporibus suis, he provided a description of the origin, customs and outline of the history of the Turks. The analysis of his work leads to conclusion, that it was a response to a great interest in this topic in the 16th Europe. Moreover, the author attempted to give a full lecture of the history of Turks, although he knew very little about the history of sultans in the 14th and the first half of the 15th century.

    In this paper the author analyses Teodor Tripplin’s Wspomnienia z podróży from the perspective of animal studies. The book is a travel memoir containing elements of fiction and it was published in the 19th century. Beginning with an introduction to the situation of animals in that time, the author of the article moves away from the protagonist and his human companions and instead focuses on their perception of the animals they encounter while traveling across European and African countries. There is a clear division between those animals that are close to humans, classified as “intelligent” (like dogs), and wild animals, which are divided into four categories: food, fur, entertainment and danger. The author often attributes human characteristics to dangerous animals in order to “prove” their real nature to the reader. Wild animals should be killed or tamed, while the purpose of companion animals establishes their usefulness to humans. There are tropes of speciesism and examples of the use of animals, not only in practice (physical labor) but also in symbolism and language, including stereotypically common terms and phraseological patterns. The purpose of this article is to analyze Tripplin’s works in order to illustrate how the traveler viewed and described animals and how this relates to the history of the formation of animal rights.
