The polish comic book market between years 1989 and 2010 The article discusses the comic book market in Poland in 1989–2010. The author tried to determine both its size and progress dynamics. The key elements of the paper are Polish comic publishers, e.g. Egmont Polska (Egmont Poland), Kultura Gniewu (Wrath’s Culture), Mandragora, Japonica Polonica Fantastica, and their most important titles. The article includes almost all forms of comic book publishing, such as European, American and Asian comic albums and books, comic magazines, children magazines, in which cartoons and funnies prevail. The paper do not analyze comic strips published in newspapers. The article is supported by numerical data. The study contains also author’s own defi nition of the comic book market.

The aim of this paper is to present Japanese comics (manga) and cartoons (anime) with sexual content called hentai. I briefly review some history of Japanese art and culture, in which sexuality has always been a legitimate subject for art and which forms the cultural underpinnings of manga. I summarize the erotic themes and visions of manga with sexual content, including female and male homosexuality (yuri, yaoi), heterosexuality (ecchi, bakunyū/kyonyuu), BDSM (kinbari), transvestitism (futanari), children (lolicon, shotakon). In conclusion, I pose the question of the need to adopt the right perspective to understand the often surprising manifestations of Japanese sexuality.

The last twenty five years in the history of Poland was not only a period of turbulent political changes, but also a time of profound social metamorphosis. As a result of the opening on western culture influence, in a relatively uniform society new movements and cultural phenomena began to form. One of them, founded around 1995, was the subculture of manga and anime fans (lovers of Japanese comics and animated films). This article pre-sents the history of the Lodz faction of this subculture, from its origins to the period of greatest prosperity. Most focus is placed on activities of local groups of East Asian popculture enthusiasts with full list of their meetings that took place in Lodz region. The text also describes the controversy surrounding the popularization of Japanese comics and animated films.
Ostatnie dwudziestopięciolecie zapisało się w historii naszego kraju nie tylko jako okres burzliwych przemian politycznych, lecz także jako czas głębokiej metamorfozy społecznej. W efekcie otwarcia się Polski na kulturę zachodnią, w dotychczas względnie jednolitym społeczeństwie na skutek oddziaływania impulsów zewnętrznych zaczęły rodzić się nowe ruchy i zjawiska kulturowe. Jednym z nich była powstała około 1995 r. subkultura fanów mangi i anime, czyli społeczność miłośników japońskich komiksów i filmów animowanych. W niniejszym artykule omówiono historię łódzkiego odłamu tej subkultury, począwszy od jej początków po okres największego rozkwitu. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na działalność łódzkich klubów zrzeszających lokalnych entuzjastów popkultury wschodnioazjatyckiej oraz zaprezentowaniu pełnego wykazu regionalnych zjazdów fanów. W tekście poruszono także zagadnienie kontrowersji towarzyszących popularyzacji japońskich komiksów i filmów animowanych.

This paper delves into the meaning of kitsch in Japanese popular culture through the analysis of their esthetical and ethical values, as well as historical-religious context. It proves also the difficulties of studying the aforementioned culture because of the geographical remoteness of this country and different mentality of its people. The text shows the beginnings of Japanese animation, called ‘anime’ for short, its essential parts and the overall canon. The most important aspect of this work is finding the answer whether anime and all its related products are associated with kitsch, camp or should they be interpreted as something completely different.

Rozwój technologii cyfrowych i Internetu zmienił sposoby uczestniczenia w kulturze. Konsumenci ograniczający się dotąd do nabywania i biernego korzystania z dóbr kultury, stają się kreatywnymi prosumentami. Prawo autorskie nie nadąża za tymi zmianami. Próby zaostrzenia regulacji z zakresu własności intelektualnej nie prowadzą do zapewnienia skutecznej ochrony twórcom i nie wspierają kreatywności. Artykuł analizuje postawy polskich konsumentów dóbr kultury (mangi) w Internecie względem prawa autorskiego. W artykule dokonano przeglądu istnieją-cych źródeł, jak również przeprowadzono własne badania. W celu zidentyfikowania postaw fanów mangi wobec prawa autorskiego zastosowano podejście interpretatywne. Przeprowadzono dwa wywia-dy w postaci minigrup, łącznie przebadano dziewięć osób w wieku 13–16 lat (grupę wybrano ze wzglę-du na profil czytelników mangi w Polsce). Badania przeprowadzone przez autorki potwierdzają donie-sienia odnalezione w literaturze, że młodzi widzą przede wszystkim pozytywne strony udostępniania i korzystania z dóbr kultury w Internecie, jest to dla nich zupełnie naturalne. Nie zastanawiają się nad konsekwencjami prawnymi takiego korzystania, ponieważ uważają, że nie są nimi objęci. Obecne prawo jest nie tylko nieskuteczne, ale działa wręcz korupcyjnie na młode pokolenie, które żyjąc w ciągłym duchu łamania prawa, uodparnia się na nie.
The development of digital technology and the Internet changed the ways of participating in culture. Copyright law does not keep up with the creative revolution that develops in cyberspace and through its existence. Attempts to tighten regulation of intellectual property do not lead to ensure the effective protection of authors and do not support creativity. The paper analyses the attitudes of consumers of manga market in Poland towards copyright law. This paper reviews the existing sources, and presents results of research conducted by authors. To identify attitudes of manga fans towards copyright law, interpretive approach was applied. 2 interviews were conduct-ed in the form of minigrup, including 9 people aged 13–16 years (group chosen due to the profile of manga readers in Poland). This research confirms that the young appreciate the dissemination and use of cultural goods on the Internet. Young fans do not take into consideration legal cons-quences of their behavior, since they believe law will not be applied to them. The current law is not only ineffective, but it works even corruptive on the young generation which while living in constant violation of the spirit of the law, become resistant to them.

In April 2014, Nihon Hoso Kyokai (NHK: Japan Broadcasting Company) aired a short animated film titled “Ophelia, not yet”. Ophelia, in this animation, survives, as she is a backstroke champion. This article will attempt to contextualize the complex negotiations, struggles and challenges between high culture and pop culture, between Western culture and Japanese culture, between authoritative cultural products and radicalized counterculture consumer products (such as animation), to argue that it would be more profitable to think of the relationships between highbrow/lowbrow, Western/non-Western, male versus female, heterosexual versus non-heterosexual, not simply in terms of dichotomies or domination/subordination, but in terms of reciprocal enrichment in a never-ending process of mutual metamorphoses.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to indicate the kinds of animals and their symbolic function in the works of the Japanese artist Takano Aya (b. 1976, Saitama). Her works may be interpreted as illustrative of the current attitude towards animals prevailing in contemporary Japanese society, especially its part that is deeply permeated by local pop culture. After all, her art fits into the Superflat movement and the girly aesthetics of kawaii at the same time. Takano’s paintings are full of images of cute household pets: dogs, fish, cats and rabbits, which accompany the female characters in both everyday activities and extraordinary moments (Doggy Drive, 2005; Summoning Her Owls, She Looked Yonder. The Buildings Shone, 2007; Crane Island, 2009). In her paintings there are also mythological animals, which were so commonly represented in the ancient artwork of Japan. Takano depicts cranes, tigers and dragons (Rising Dragon (Rainbow) with Lucky Omens, 2015) in the same style as household pets.
タカノ綾の芸術作品における龍とその他の動物」本論の目的は、日本のアーティストであるタカノ綾（1976年埼玉生まれ）の作品における、ある種の動物達と彼らの象徴的な役割を指摘することである。彼女の作品は、日本現代社会の中でも特にポップカルチャーに深く浸透している動物に対する姿勢を映し出していると解釈できる。そして彼女の芸術作品は、「カワイイ」少女的美学と同時にスーパーフラット・ムーブメントに合致する。タカノの絵画には、犬、魚、猫、そして兎など多くの可愛いペットのイメージが、女性のキャラクターと共に、日常的な活動や非日常的な瞬間の中に描かれる（Doggy Drive, 2005; The Buildings Shone, 2007; Crane Island, 2009）。彼女の絵画の中には、日本の古くから伝わる芸術に頻繁に見られる神話的な動物もまた現れる。鶴、虎、龍（Rising Dragon (Rainbow) with Lucky Omens, 2015）といった動物達はタカノによって、ペットと同様のスタイルで表現されているのである。

Sailor Moon, a Japanese series grounded in manga and anime, began airing translations in the West throughout the 1990s. The series provided what could be interpreted as resistance to dichotomous conceptualizations of sexuality, sex and gender. The focus of this article is the set of challenges presented by the genderqueer characters in Sailor Moon and how Westernization and English translations have worked to erase and re-write queer identities. Arguably, Sailor Moon acts as a site to play out the contextualities and complexities of sexuality, sex and gender identities. To name Sailor Moon characters in Western specific terms would be at the expense of reducing the complexity of their identities to a categorical system whose boundaries detract and limit meaning. Queer characters in Sailor Moon are not translatable into dichotomous Western thought - categories fail us and, through their enforcement, the depth of meaning and the complexities of queer identities/desires are lost in translation. Working within Western binary systems, categories and language, many of these identities appear contradictory and incoherent. Sailor Moon characters offer a re-envisioning of identities that is not limited by Western binaric thought and cannot be easily pegged within the heterosexual matrix.

The present report illustrates an improved and reproducible micropropagation system for economically valuable bamboo species Pseudoxytenanthera stocksii using nodal segments. Direct organogenesis from nodal segments was accomplished by culturing on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 6.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). On this medium combination 9.0±0.25 shoots per explant were induced. Shoot multiplication was subjective to the combination of auxins and cytokinins concentrations used and number of repeated transfer of mother explants or subculturing of in vitro regenerated shoot clumps on fresh medium. Maximum 41.9±1.00 shoots were observed on MS medium supplemented with 4.0 mg/L of BAP and 0.25 mg/L of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Half strength MS medium containing various concentrations of auxins was used for in vitro root formation. Successful rooting with maximum response was achieved on half strength MS medium + 50% sucrose and 1.0 mg/L IBA (24.3±0.27 roots). The rooted plantlets were planted the soilrite and hardened in the greenhouse for 6-8 weeks. Completely acclimatized plantlets exhibited 96% survivability. The present propagation protocol could satisfy the demand of P. stocksii and could be explored for the commercial propagation of this valuable manga bamboo.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza postaci Conana Edogawy, protagonisty komiksowego cyklu Meitantei Conan autorstwa Gōshō Aoyamy jako wariacji na temat superbohatera. Materiał badawczy, oprócz mangi, stanowią serial animowany będący jej adaptacją oraz powiązane z nim filmy kinowe. Źródło inspiracji dla japońskiego artysty stanowi szeroko pojęta literatura kryminalna, a zwłaszcza opowiadania o Sherlocku Holmesie autorstwa Artura Conana Doyle’a. Analiza zebranego materiału wykazała, że opisywana franczyza ma charakter narracji transmedialnej. Ponadto Aoyama, jak również twórcy animowanych adaptacji komiksu Meitantei Conan, posługuje się transfikcjonalnością. Japoński artysta dzięki połączeniu elementów kryminalnych z superbohaterskimi oraz częściowemu ich sparodiowaniu, stworzył postać „omnipotentnego”, wszechwiedzącego detektywa-superherosa, który jest w stanie rozwiązać każdą zagadkę.
The aim of this paper is a character analysis of Conan Edogawa – the protagonist of Meitantei Conan by Gōshō Aoyama – as a variation of the superhero. The research material includes manga, animated series adaptation and related cinematic films. The broadly understood criminal novel (mostly the Sherlock Holmes cycle by Arthur Conan Doyle) was the source of inspiration for the Japanese artist. The analysis of the collected material demonstrates that the described franchise used a transmedia narration. Both Aoyama and the authors of animated adaptations use transfictionality in their works. With the combined usage of the criminal and superhero elements, the Japanese artist created an omnipotent and omniscient superhero detective who can solve any mystery.

The article analyzes the alienation of the main character of the manga series Death Note, who owns the Death Notebook referred to in the title. The said notebook allows to kill any person. Drawing upon the theses of Michel Foucault related to the rights of monarchs of bygone times to condemn individuals to death, and to ritualizing death itself, the author of the article shows Kira as a continuator of the said monarchs. The motif of death from the hands of another person is indicated as a form of revenge for harms suffered by one, based on considerations by Jean Baudrillard. The text also aims to show that comic books are not just entertainment for the masses, but can convey serious content instead.

Historia jest silnie powiązana z krajem i jego obywatelami. Identyfikuje naród i kraj, pomaga zachować tożsamość, przypominając ludziom o ich dziedzictwie. Polska nieustannie poszukuje nowych rynków dla swoich produktów, nawet w krajach, w których jest ledwo obecna. Jednym z krajów, na którego rynek stara się wejść Polska, jest Japonia, kraj, którego obywatele niewiele wiedzą o Polsce. Aby ułatwić relacje między tymi dwoma krajami, polski rząd postanowił rozpocząć kampanię informacyjną o przeszłości i teraźniejszości Polski, jej możliwościach, znaczeniu na arenie międzynarodowej i jej mieszkańcach. Biorąc pod uwagę charakter japońskiej kultury, komiks został wybrany jako najbardziej odpowiednie medium.
History is strongly linked to the country and its citizens. It identifies the nation and the country, it helps to preserve the identity by reminding the people of their legacy. That is why it is a perfect means of building a country's brand and evoking associations with its location and society. Poland is constantly searching for new markets for its products, even in countries in which it is barely present. One of the countries whose market Poland is trying to get into is Japan, a country whose citizens do not know much about Poland. In order to facilitate the relations between these two countries, the Polish government decided to launch an information campaign about Poland's past and present, its possibilities, its significance in the international arena, and its people. Considering the character of Japanese culture a comic has been chosen to be the adequate medium.
