    The aim of the article was to present the circumstances of the establishment and the scope of activities of the Central Office for Control of the Press, which was transformed into Main Office for Control of the Press, Publications, and Public Performances in November 1945. The article is an attempt at answering the following questions: who were the first censors? From what communities/ professional groups did they come? According to what criteria were the censors selected shortly after the founding of the Center? How did the so-called Soviet advisors influence the process of the emergence of institutional censorship in the Polish territory during World War II?

    The article discusses censoring Russian threads in polish literature of 80s in XX century. The author based on the archival materials, found in The Archive of Modern Acts in Warsaw. He shows some examples of control: how poems of Jerzy Ficowski, Jan Lechoń, Jan Bolesław Ożóg and Tadeusz Urgacz were censored because of Russian threads. The article also contains information on legal conditions regarding the censorship of literature in Poland in the 1980s.

    Opis:
    The main goal of the article is to analyse censorship interventions made in articles raising the topics of the referendum and the election to the Legislative Sejm which were prepared for print in the periodicals of the Polish People’s Party. The material developed by the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows in Warsaw and by its regional divisions constituted its basic source of information. I conducted a quantitative analysis of the interventions using a sample of the reports of the censorship institution regarding the “Polska Ludowa” periodical. I have also discussed the content removed from print. Within the studied area, censorship most often prevented the PSL periodicals from publishing information regarding the repressions of the PSL’s activists, informing about the organisation of both events and suggesting the fact of forging votes.

    This article discusses the censorship of the Spanish Civil War in Poland, using the example of the work Zapiski na karteluszkach. Hiszpania po czterdziestu latach by Jan Wyka. The first part of the text is dedicated to the activities of “GUKPPiW” in the 1980s, biographical information on Wyka and other important publications on the Spanish CivilWar. In the second part, Zapiski has been reconstructed to demonstrate the fragments cut out by the censorship.

    Opis:
    In my article I would like to describe the influence of the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows (MOoCoPPaS) on censored religious texts. The article mainly concerns manuals for religious instruction, but also other interesting religious texts, such as: prayer-books, catechisms, the New Testament and a theological scientific text – Karol Wojtyla’s tenure dissertation. During my search query at the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw (Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie) I focused on acts of the MOoCoPPaS which concerned manuals for religious instruction. I analyzed data included in over 20 files, which gives a total number of about 6,850 pages of documents. The discussed archival material mainly consists of censors’ reviews of the previously mentioned texts. The points discussed in these involve comments on social and political issues; prayers for peace and for the president; elimination of texts connected with the oppression of Catholicism and Catholics; obliteration of terms of soldiers or knights of Christ; deletion of terms of the Polish state and Poles; attacks on laic knowledge; intolerance of atheism; pre-war manuals and Jews. Both parties of the permanent conflict between the Church and the State used some “strategies”. In order to avoid censorship, religious instruction was usually taught without a manual. The authorities, in turn, suspended printing of inconvenient items by keeping them at the Office. However when such text was to be published censors tried to at least diminish its importance.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są przykłady prewencyjnych ingerencji cenzorskich dokonywanych przez Wojewódzki Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk w „Tygodniku Powszechnym” na przestrzeni lat 1957–1961. Opracowanie jest próbą uzyskania odpowiedzi na pytania: w jakim stopniu Wojewódzki Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk (dalej: WUKPPiW) w Krakowie ingerował w treść „Tygodnika Powszechnego”?; w jaki sposób redakcja „Tygodnika Powszechnego” próbowała uzyskać większy zakres autonomii wobec WUKPPiW?; jak układały się relacje między WUKPPiW a tygodnikiem w latach 1957–1961? Podstawowym materiałem źródłowym artykułu są sprawozdania z kontroli prewencyjnych znajdujące się w zespole Głównego Urzędu Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji iWidowisk (dalej: GUKPPiW) przechowywane w Archiwum Akt Nowych (dalej: AAN).
    The subject of the article are examples of preventive censorship interference by the Regional Office for Control of Press, Publications and Public Performances in „Tygodnik Powszechny” between 1957–1961. The study attempts to answer the following questions: to what degree did the Regional Office for Control of Press, Publications and Public Performances (later: WUKPPiW) in Kraków interfere with the content of „Tygodnik Powszechny”?; in what way did the editorial office try to obtain greater freedom from WUKPPiW?; how did the relations between WUKPPiW and the weekly look like between 1957–1961? The basic source material of the article are reports from preventive controls, available in the Main Office for Control of Press, Publications and Public Performances (later: GUKPPiW) stored in the Archive of Modern Records (later: AAN).

    Artykuł przybliża zakres i mechanizm działania aparatu cenzury szczebla lokalnego (na poziomie województwa, powiatu i gminy), w szczególności zaś referentów społeczno-politycznych pełniących funkcje cenzorskie na prowincji. Analizując ich działalność, można dostrzec wiele interesujących postaw niecharakterystycznych dla totalitarnej władzy, takich jak sabotowanie dyrektyw i instrukcji przysyłanych z centrum, długotrwałe ignorowanie poleceń zwierzchników, niestawianie się w pracy, nieprzestrzeganie tajemnicy państwowej, niewywiązywanie się z poleceń Urzędu Głównego.
    The article presents the scope and operational mechanism of the local censorship apparatus (at the level of provinces, districts, and communes), particularly the socio-political officials performing censorship functions in the countryside. Analysing their activity, one can notice many interesting attitudes uncharacteristic of totalitarian power, such as sabotaging directives and instructions sent from the centre, long-term disregard for directives from superiors, failing to turn up for work, failing to observe state secrets, failing to comply with instructions from the Main Office for the Control of the Press, Publications and Public Performances.
