Opis:
Portable, hand-held ultrasound devices capable of 3D imaging in real time are the next generation of the medical imaging apparatus adapted not only for professional medical stuff but for a wide group of less advanced users. Limited power supply capacity and the relatively small number of channels used for the ultrasound data acquisition are the most important limitations that should be taken into account when designing such devices and when developing the corresponding image reconstruction algorithms. The aim of this study was to develop a new 3D ultrasound imaging method which would take into account the above-mentioned features of the new generation of ultrasonic devices – low-cost portable general access scanners. It was based on the synthetic transmit aperture (STA) method combined with the Fourier spectrum domain (SD) acoustic data processing. The STA using a limited number of elements in transmit and receive modes for ultrasound data acquisition allowed both aforementioned constraints to be obeyed simultaneously. Moreover, the computational speed of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm utilized for the ultrasound image synthesis in the spectrum domain makes the proposed method to be more competitive compared to the conventional time domain (TD) STA method based on the delay-and-sum (DAS) technique, especially in the case of 3D imaging in real time mode. Performance of the proposed method was verified using numerical 3D acoustic data simulated in the Field II program for MATLAB and using experimental data from the custom design 3D scattering phantom collected by means of the Verasonics Vantage 256™ research ultrasound system equipped with the dedicated 1024-element 2D matrix transducer. The method proposed in this paper was about 80 times faster than its counterpart based on the time domain synthetic transmit aperture (TD-STA) approach in the numerical example of a single 3D ultrasound image synthesized from 4 partial images each containing 64 × 64 × 512 pixels. It was also shown that the acceleration of the image reconstruction was achieved at the cost of a slight deterioration in the image quality assessed by the contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR).

Opis:
Choosing the right competitive strategy helps a firm to compete with it rivals and become a leader in the market. Two different generic types of competitive strategies consisting of low-cost provider and differentiation have been wildly accepted by firms in every industry, but they are mutually exclusive and are not implemented at the same time. Nevertheless, contemporary studies agree that those two strategies can be combined, and firm should implement mutual strategies. Therefore, this research aims to examine the compatibility of a low-cost provider strategy and a differentiation strategy, and their impacts on organizational performance, considering various environmental factors. Methodologically, a quantitative approach was deployed using multiple regressions to analyze the responses from 42 CEOs in Thai public limited companies in eight different industries, which were classified in SET 100 index. The findings showed that combined strategies produced more significant impacts on the companies’ performance than a single strategy. Thus, firms may combine both low cost and differentiation strategies and implement them simultaneously. In addition, control variables (rapid change and uncertainty) and strategy variables appear to have significant impacts on companies’ performance. Therefore, firms should not ignore them to prevent negative consequences.

Pollutant removal by the mechanism of constructed wetland has led to low cost, highly efficient wastewater treatment technology. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are artificial engineered systems that mimic like natural wetlands. CW’s have been used in previous research to treat a broad range of waste streams at large-scale for low-cost application in wastewater management. Generally, the most literature has targeted a particular class of mechanism or the other due to lack of generalized techniques for wastewater management using CWs. This work focuses on to introductory information and review on concept of CWs based on the latest mechanisms for the wastewater treatment to inspire economical and sustainable solutions to water based environmental problems. This research emphasis CW mechanism, construction, design, and applications of CWs as well as optimization of CWs for the treatment of wastewater. This review also highlights the study with different treatment stages of CWs for removing pollutants from different types of wastewaters.

The description of the physical parameters characterizing heat transport in the soil medium, especially on a regional scale, requires long-term and high frequency observations of temperature changes in soil profiles. This paper presents a project for a multi-channel, modular and universal data logger for temperature distribution data collecting in the soil profile, based on open electronic components, such as Arduino microcontroller systems and DS18B20 thermometers. The data logger tests were carried out in two profiles. The seven-month tests did not show any errors in the functioning of the measurement set. The presented device requires an average current of 320 µA, which allows for its stable operation on one battery set for about 300 days in temperate climate conditions. The DS18B20 thermometers allow for accurate and stable temperature measurement (the mean absolute error after laboratory calibration was 0.02°C). The cost of a single measurement-registration device was approximately 76 EUR, representing a competitive price in comparison with commercial data loggers. This allows, with relatively low expenditure, the creation of extensive observation networks for the analysis of the heat flow process in high temporal and spatial resolution.

The paper presents a part of a prototype system for the monitoring of selected vital functions of humans and some preliminary results obtained from the device using implemented algorithm. The system consists of such essential modules like a microcontroller board, an inertial measurement unit and additional sensors. The main task of the device is human movement monitoring and detecting selected anomalies, e.g. fall or fainting. At the first stage, the movement classification was considered. The main movement type are walking, running and selected variants of transitions between different phases like standing up or going downstairs. The determining of the movement is based on the intuitive algorithm using raw data from accelerometers complemented by sensors like barometer and heart rate monitor. The algorithm utilizes automated multiscale-based peak detection and wavelet transform energy calculations. Finally, some further work directions and development possibilities are discussed.

Opis:
In the paper it is shown that time necessary to solve the NP-hard Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) could be considerably reduced using a low-cost multicomputer. We consider an extension of the problem when resources are only partially available and a deadline is given but the cost of the project should be minimized. In such a case nding an acceptable solution (optimal or even semi-optimal) is computationally very hard. To reduce this complexity a distributed processing model of a metaheuristic algorithm, previously adapted by us for working with human resources and the CCPM method, was developed. Then, a new implementation of the model on a low-cost multicomputer built from PCs connected through a local network was designed and compared with regular implementation of the model on a cluster. Furthermore, to examine communication costs, an implementation of the model on a single multi-core PC was tested, too. The comparative studies proved that the implementation is as ecient as on more expensive cluster. Moreover, it has balanced load and scales well.

Cases of heavy traffic congestion (commonly referred to as traffic jams) have negative influences on the economy, public health, and social life. This makes it important to assist drivers in these situations with Internet of Things (IoT) systems. The aim of this article is to present a low-cost device that supports driving in traffic jams. The system, which is based on data from a laser sensor with a range of up to 40 m, controls the distances to vehicles in front of and behind a moving car. Through audio and video signals, it warns the driver whether the vehicle in front of or behind the equipped vehicle is too close. This allows the driver to control the distance and avoid minor collisions.

Opis:
Vision systems are commonly used in robotics. The most often, they are applied as sensory systems, but they can also be used for experimental determination of a manipulator end-effector’s pose. In this paper, application of an exemplary low-cost vision system for position measurement was tested. The considered vision system was composed of a pair of CMOS cameras. The applied experiment procedure consisted in recording of a set of pictures captured after consequent approaches of a robot end-effector (grasping a cube with markers on it) to the command pose repeatedly from the same direction. Processing of the pictures led to determination of position of the markers. Analysis of position measurement precision contained: determination of spatial distribution of consequently captured positions, assessment of quality of the captured pictures according to a set of 4 indicators, and comparison of measurement techniques employing the considered vision system and a professional measurement system (for this purpose the experiment was repeated with use of a laser tracker and a local estimate of the unidirectional positioning repeatability RP was determined). The reported investigation indicated that low-cost stereovision systems might be successfully applied for a robotic manipulator position measurement with accuracy of approximately 0.1 mm, which is often satisfactory in the engineering practice. Surprisingly, analysis of the achieved experimental results led to reasonable estimation of the RP value (approx. 0.02 mm according to the robot’s manufacturer).
Systemy wizyjne są powszechnie stosowane w robotyce. Najczęściej pełnią rolę układów sensorycznych, chociaż mogą być też użyte do pomiaru pozycji chwytaka/narzędzia robota. W artykule przestawiono przykład zastosowania niskokosztowego systemu wizyjnego do pomiaru położenia chwytaka.

A number of public codes exist for GPS positioning and baseline determination in off-line mode. However, no software code exists for DGPS exploiting correction factors at base stations, without relying on double difference information. In order to accomplish it, a methodology is introduced in MATLAB environment for DGPS using C/A pseudoranges on single frequency L1 only to make it feasible for low-cost GPS receivers. Our base station is at accurately surveyed reference point. Pseudoranges and geometric ranges are compared at base station to compute the correction factors. These correction factors are then handed over to rover for all valid satellites observed during an epoch. The rover takes it into account for its own true position determination for corresponding epoch. In order to validate the proposed algorithm, our rover is also placed at a pre-determined location. The proposed code is an appropriate and simple to use tool for post-processing of GPS raw data for accurate position determination of a rover e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle during post-mission analysis.

This work investigates adsorption of n-hexane on activated tyre pyrolysis char (ATPC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) as a reference material in a fixed-bed column. Microwave-assisted regeneration is also considered. The adsorbed amount of n-hexane on ATPC is in the range of 37–58 mg/g. Microwave-assisted desorption of ATPC samples enables the recovery of up to 95% of adsorbed n-hexane in this non-optimized microwave setup with the efficiency of microwave energy conversion into heat of only 5–6%. For the 50% breakthrough time, ATPC and GAC are able to purify the n-hexane gas volumes in the ranges of 20–90 and 935–1240 cm3/g, respectively. While adsorption kinetics is not satisfactorily described by pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic models, it is very well reflected by a family of dynamic adsorption models, which are modelled with a single logistic function. Internal diffusion is likely the rate limiting step during adsorption on ATPC, while external and internal diffusion likely plays a role in adsorption to GAC. Although microwave-assisted regeneration is performed in a general purpose microwave reactor, both adsorbents show excellent performance and are very good candidates for the adsorption process. Preliminary results show that magnetite can further reduce microwave energy consumption.
