Opis:
Cardiotocography (CTG) is a routine method of fetal condition assessment used in modern obstetrics. It is a biophysical method based on simultaneous recording and analysis of activity of fetal heart, fetal movements and maternal uterine contractions. The fetal condition is diagnosed on the basis of printed CTG trace evaluation. The correct interpretation of CTG traces from a bedside monitor is very difficult even for experienced clinicians. Therefore, computerized fetal monitoring systems are used to yield the quantitative description of the signal. However, the effective methods, aiming to support the conclusion generation, are still being searched. One of the most important features defining the state of fetal outcome is the weight of the newborn. The presented work describes an application of the Artificial Neural Network Based on Logical Interpretation of fuzzy if-then Rules (ANBLIR) to evaluate the risk of the low birth weight using a set of parameters quantitatively describing the CTG traces. The obtained results confirm that the neuro-fuzzy based CTG classification methods are very efficient for the prediction of the fetal outcome.

Opis:
Background. Low birth weight (LBW) is a major health problem responsible for neonatal mortality and morbidity such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Objective. This case-control study aims to compare data on the intake of energy, macro and micronutrient in two groups of pregnant women, who gave birth to low birth weight (LBW) babies named cases and those who gave birth to babies of normal weight (NW) called controls. Material and methods. The collection of information was done using an established questionnaire for 400 pregnant women, allowing the collection of data on socio-demographic and obstetrical factors. Nutritional intake was obtained by recording food consumption using the 24-hour recall method. Anthropometric measurements of parturient and fundal height (FH) were measured before delivery. Results. The mean FH of the cases was 25.69±0.13 and that of the controls was 31.83±0.06. The gestational age of the cases was on average 31.65±0.21 week of amenorrhea (WA) against 38.04±0.08 WA for the controls. 37% of LBW newborns had an Apgar score < 7 (p< 0.001) and 71% were hospitalized in neonatal intensive care (p<0.001). Micronutrient deficiency was raised and concerned calcium 34.02% vs 60.65%, folates 48.32% vs 68.01% and iron 50.85% vs 66% in cases and controls respectively. Newborns from NW had a weight of 3395.5±15.99 against 1957.25±30.72 for those from LBW. Conclusion. This study shows that the nutritional intake did not cover all the nutrient needs of the pregnant women studied and that newborns with LBW are associated with an altered anthropometric status. Improving the living conditions of mothers, good monitoring of pregnancy, and good nutritional education can significantly improve the nutritional status with the same food intake and should be integrated into the nutritional intervention strategies.

Opis:
Background. Low birth weight (LBW) is considered to be one of the most important indicators of a newborn's chances of survival, and a major risk of medium- and long-term morbidity. Objective. To identify risk factors associated with low birth weight newborns among pregnant women during childbirth in Moroccan hospital environment with a view to proposing avenues of intervention for its prevention. Material and methods. Data concerning the weight of newborns at birth, nutritional education, pregnancy monitoring and other risk factors, etc. were collected from 312 pregnant women who gave birth in the maternity ward of El-Jadida Provincial Hospital in Morocco. Results. The study identified 156 cases of newborns with LBW and 156 controls of normal-weight newborns. After adjustment for the variables included in the analysis, the determined factors associated with LBW are nutritional education [OR: 6.22 (2.60-14.87), P<0.001], illiterate women [OR: 8.74 (1.65-46.08), P=0.011], insufficient pregnancy monitoring [OR: 5.69 (2.74-11.83),P<0.001], pregnant women with a normal weight [OR: 3.84 (1.73-8.52), P=0.001], lack of psychological support [OR: 3.23 (1.72-6.08), P<0.001] and tiring domestic activity [OR: 2.13 (1.14-3.99), P=0.017]. Conclusion. Promotion of nutrition for pregnant women, proper implementation of maternal health programs and improvement of their social condition are the modifiable factors that should help reduce LBW risk.

Background. Low birth weight (LBW) is an important predictor of neonatal morbidity and mortality. It reflects the nutritional status of the mother and the quality of health care services during pregnancy. Objective. The objective of this study is to determine the factors associated with low birth weight of children born to Moroccan pregnant women in the province of El Jadida. Material and Methods. This cross-sectional case-control study was carried out in the maternity ward of El Jadida provincial hospital on 344 parturient women, half of whom had given birth to children with an LBW and the other half of children with normal weight (NW) at birth. Information on maternal gestational and socioeconomic characteristics as well as eating habits was collected using a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements were taken on the newborns. Results. The study identified 172 parturient who gave birth to newborns with LBW and 172 parturient who gave birth to newborns of NW. The proportions of LBW are greater in first-time mothers (50.6%) and professionally inactive (86.6%). The mean weight of LBW newborns is 2013.95 ± 372.95g compared to 3380 ± 217.59g for NW newborns. The determined factors associated with LBW are the low socio-economic level (OR = 3.18; 95% CI: 1.09-9.23), insufficient monitoring of prenatal consultation (OR = 2.91; 95% CI: 1, 71-4.95), origin from rural areas (OR = 0.52; 95% CI: 0.30-0.91) and lack of nutritional education (OR = 0.17; 95% CI: 0, 09-0.34). The daily calcium intake in mothers of newborns with LBW is 33.82% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA), the daily iron requirement coverage was 50%, folates 66, 16% and zinc 87.72% of the RDA. Conclusions. Well-targeted and coordinated education and awareness-raising actions on early pregnancy and feeding pregnant women could have a positive impact on improving the birth rate of children with a weight deficit.

Introduction. Low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of the healthy of the population and reflects the living conditions, health and health behaviours of pregnant women. Objective. To assess the relationship between Gross Enrollment Rate at the Tertiary Education Level, average salary, Gross Domestic Product per capita, unemployment, housing area, urbanization and low birth weight in Polish sub-regions. Materials and method. An ecological study was undertaken using data on socio-economic and demographic features and LBW in 2005–2014. The units of observation were 66 Polish sub-regions according to the NUTS-3 classification. Two models were used to assess the influence of SES variables on LBW incidence rate in a 10-year study period. The first was the Poisson regression model adjusted for density of population, which was followed by the multivariable model using the GEE method of model parameters estimation. Results. In Poland, significant slow changes in the LBW incidence rate were observed in 2005–2014 (AAPC = –0.44%/year). In model 1, the increase in LBW was associated with an increase in unemployment (1.005) and decrease of average salary (0.987), GERTEL (0.990) and housing area (0.991). In model 2, an unfavorable association was detected between the density of population (1.068) and a still existing relationship with unemployment (1.004), average salary (0.990) and GERTEL (0.991). Conclusion. Protective factors for newborns’ health were a higher level of education and income. The results indicate the need to take actions to reduce the risk factors of LBW among pregnant women living in densely populated areas.

Nutrition is one of the most important factors influencing health status. Appropriate placental supply of oxygen and nutrients is essential for optimal fetal growth and development. Body weight at birth has great impact on subsequent growth and health performance. Low birth weight piglets are at higher risk for death and often continue to grow slowly. Appropriate management strategy may increase survival and weight gain of small piglets. First of all, low birth weight piglets should ingest proper amounts of colostrum and milk. The aim of this paper was to present the aspects connected with nutrition of low birth weight piglets.

Background: Low birth weight is an alarming problem in developing countries and has severe future complications. Aim of the study: Our study aimed to compare the risk factors among mothers with low and normal birth weight babies. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 1000 mothers with normal and low birth weight babies (500 per group) over two years. Maternal parameters including age, hemoglobin levels, gravida, maternal weight gain, height, pregnancy-induced hypertension, etc., were collected along with anthropometric data of the child. We compared risk factors among the low and normal birth weight babies using the chi-square test, determining statistical significance at p<0.05, and high statistical significance at p<0.01. Results: Highly statistically significant associations were observed between low birth weight and seven variables: maternal age (p=0.0074), maternal height (p<0.0001), weight (p<0.0001), weight gain (p<0.0001), hemoglobin (p<0.0001), severe anemia (p<0.0001), and pregnancy-induced hypertension (p<0.0001). Conclusions: Our study observed significant modifiable risk factors like weight gain, weight, hemoglobin, and anemia among mothers with low birth weight babies. If we focus on raising awareness surrounding these risk factors, there may be an improvement in the birth weight of babies in this population.

Introduction and aim. Reduction in child morbidity and mortality is result of upgradation of infrastructure and quality of public health care services. India alone accounts for 30% of the global neonatal deaths occur in India that occurs due to preventable cause. So, the aim of this study was to assess the pattern and status of neonatal mortality observed in SNCUs of Uttar Pradesh, India. Material and methods. Descriptive study was conducted based on secondary data obtained from sick new born care units (SNCU) online database from 89 Government-supported SNCUs of Uttar Pradesh, from April 2014 to March 2016. Data obtained included age, weight, sex, diagnosis, and outcome. Results. 22933 neonates admitted in SNCU were included in study with 14269 (62.2%) were males and 8664 (37.8%) females. Majority of the subject (20070; 87%) were in 0-5 days old age group. Most (72.5%) of admitted new-born improved and discharged. Low birth weight was significantly (χ2 = 1334.2, p<0.001) related with outcome. Birth asphyxia contributed to maximum (36.11%) numberof deaths, followed by respiratory distress syndrome (25.21%), sepsis (15.38%), prematurity and extremely low birth weight (5.8%). Conclusion. Improved antenatal care, improved access to health facility, timely referral of high-risk cases, capacity building, intensive interventional management can reduce neonatal mortality and its complications. Study also warrants, in-depth community-based qualitative study to identify gender-specific, equity issues.

Along with the introduction in 2009 of a new base of general education to all types of educational institutions, health education have been given a higher rank in school. Training content to be provided to the students during the various stages of education was established. Physical education teacher was identified as the person responsible for teaching this section of the program. Unfortunately some public health problems, despite the fact that we live in the twentyfirst century, are constantly taboo subjects in education. This applies mainly to sex education. The increasing number of infants born prematurely with low birth weight and malformations is an indication to take the issue of a healthy lifestyle as one of the necessary conditions for a healthy pregnancy. The aim of the study stresses the need to expand school health education topic.

Wprowadzenie. Wśród wskaźników oceniających stan biologiczny społeczeństwa wymieniane są wartości urodzeniowej masy ciała i procentowy udział noworodków urodzonych z masą ciała < 2500g (Low Birth Weight, LBW). Cel. Celem pracy była próba oceny prawdopodobieństwa wystąpienia małej urodzeniowej masy ciała wśród noworodków w zależności od czynników ryzyka, z wykorzystaniem regresji logistycznej. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. Prawdopodobieństwo wystąpienia niskiej urodzeniowej masy ciała jest istotnie powiązane ze skróceniem czasu trwania ciąży (OR=2) i paleniem tytoniu przez matkę w czasie ciąży (OR=0,36)(tab.5). Utworzony model regresji logistycznej przyjmuje postać (tab.5): Logit P=-25,57+1. x1 (czas trwania ciąży) -1,02. x2 (palenie tytoniu przez matkę w czasie ciąży). Wnioski.
Introduction. Values of birth weight and percentage contribution of newborn babies with body weight below 2,500g (Low Birth Weight LBW) are mentioned among the indicators assessing the biological state of society. Aim. The objective of the study was assessment of the probability of low birth weight in newborns according to risk factors, such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, mother’s calendar age and education, as well as gestational age, using logistic regression. Material and methods. The study was conducted during 1999–2007 in a group of 3,071 healthy and physically fit male and female students (and their mothers) of the first year of full studies at the Jędszej Śniadecki University of Physical Education in Gdańsk. The data was obtained from medical records (retrospective study), and a questionnaire designed by the author. The following tests were applied: Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, χ2, Kolmogorov-Smirnow and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient and analysis of the logistic regression. Results. Statistically signification relationships were found between maternal smoking during pregnancy and low birth weight of the baby (OR=0.36), and between times of pregnancy and low birth weight of the baby (OR=2). No significant relationship was observed between calendar age and education of the mother and the probability of occurrence of LBW in newborns. The created logistic regression model takes the form: Logit P=-25.57+1. x1 (gestational age) -1.02. x2 (smoking during pregnancy). Conclusion. Special attention should be paid to the prevention of LBW, including the shaping of health promoting behaviours, popularization of knowledge concerning causes of LBW, and health consequences of the LBW. Logistic regression is perfectly suited to estimate the probability of LBW.
