Opis:
This paper focuses on a Christian philosophy grounded in the experience of truth. To better understand this, it will explore: (1) the kind of philosophical approach that provides a space for people to preoccupy themselves with truth and draws them to further probe into the fundamental questions; (2) a return to the basics: philosophy as love of wisdom and for love of wisdom is personal, an experiential journey; (3) finally, a vision of Christian philosophy that is not purely theoretical but teaches one how to incarnate every truth and virtue. Christian philosophy provides us with an experience in, with, and of the truth in terms of understanding and developing certain traits and virtues such as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The shaping and molding of these good habits within each person are important in maintaining a Christian worldview to keep one grounded while being immersed in the world and its realities, allowing the Christian to become a reality within oneself and for others.

Opis:
Artykuł ukazuje najbardziej charakterystyczne elementy nauczania św. Augustyna na temat amor sapientiae. Stanowi on syntetyczną analizę opartą na wypowiedziach z całego życia myśliciela z Tagasty. Opracowanie to kreśli zarazem główne rysy Augustyńskiego itinerarium duchowego.
The article shows the most characteristic elements of the teaching of St. Augustine on the subject of amor sapientiae. It represents a synthetic analysis, based on statements from the whole life of a thinker from Thagaste. At the same time, this work sketches the main features of the Augustinian spiritual itinerary. Augustine was deeply convinced that God’s providence not only brought him to philospophie portus, but also ignited the soul with a great love of wisdom. At the beginning of Augustin’s love of wisdom, Cicero Hortensius, read in the nineteenth year of age, stands. While amor sapientiae introduced Augustine first to the land of philosophy, so from the moment of conversion and baptism, his search for wisdom will be based mainly on the seriousness of the Holy Scripture and the authority of the Church’s faith. Hence the Augustinian amor sapientiae has a philosophical, theological and mystical dimension. Just as wisdom is for St. Augustine knows human and divine matters, intellectual knowledge of eternal matters, the highest light or truth, so also the path leads to her through knowledge and love. The culmination of the Augustinian search for wisdom is to reach God himself, the Wisdom who is the Son of God incarnate, Jesus Christ. Like the great thinker with Samos Pythagoras, the thinker with Thagase Augustine is fully entitled to the title of lover of wisdom (amateur sapientiae).

Opis:
In the article the Author analyzes different ways of understanding and practicing the philosophy of education. This analysis leads to the conclusion that methodological status of philosophy of education is indefinite, and this is an important issue that should be considered. The Author proposes to distinguish the pedagogical philosophy of education from the philosophy of education as a philosophy in the strict sense. The purpose of pedagogical reflection is to improve the process of education. The goal of philosophy is to understand the nature and essence of education, therefore it is a purely theoretical purpose. The Author refers to the classical approach of philosophy being love of wisdom, according to which the philosophy is a disinterested contemplation of truth.

Preview: “America does not think much of its philosophers,” Douglas Anderson writes in his introduction to Philosophy Americana. “We do not teach philosophy in our high schools. A majority in America have no idea what philosophy is about or why it might be interesting, if not important.” Perhaps that lack of appreciation for philosophy is coeval with its beginnings when the ancient Athenians put Socrates to death. Anderson’s lament is clearly present from the supposed birth of Western philosophy, and vividly so in 1486 in Italian humanist Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s discourse known as The Dignity of Man, where he states, “The whole of philosophy (such is the unhappy plight of our time) is occasion for contempt and contumely, rather than honor and glory. The deadly and monstrous persuasion has invaded practically all minds, that philosophy ought not to be studied at all or by very few people; as though it were a thing of little worth to have before our eyes and at our fingertips. . . .Thus,” Pico said six centuries ago, “we have reached a point, it is painful to recognize, where the only persons accounted wise are those who can reduce the pursuit of wisdom to a profitable traffic.” So it seems today in America and so it has apparently been and will ever be. Nevertheless, Anderson hopes to open a discussion about how philosophy does and does not manifest itself in American culture, how its practitioners remain “invisible,” and largely misunderstood “in rural, laboring, underclassed, and unschooled settings.” It is not his intention, at least in this book, to take up the issue of race in a discipline as overwhelmingly white as Western philosophy. Yet this has been for me, a black American philosopher, a lifelong meditation, which I will attempt to address in this essay.

Opis:
Verb agapaō (to love) occurs only 23 times in the Book of Ben Sira (the verb fileō, instead, does not occur even once!). In the instruction of Wisdom in Sir 4:11-19 it appears as many as four times. It does not seem to be accidental. The analysis of the text carried out in the present article shows that Wisdom functions as a mediator between God and humans. It is Wisdom that leads human being to God, and it is through her mediation that humans receive the gifts that they deserve on the basis of their attitude toward Wisdom and toward the Lord. The first part of the examined passage (vv. 12-16; verse 11 constitutes an introduction), shows a refined theological and poetic structure. The verses 12-14 constitute the first section that focuses on the love of Wisdom and God. The second section (vv. 14a-16) focuses on one’s dedication to Wisdom and, through her mediation, to God. The focal point of the analyzed text can be found in v. 14b: “the Lord loves those who love her”. In v. 17 we read about the test, to which Wisdom put her disciples in order to ascertain their faithfulness and dedication. The last two verses reveal the results of this trial: first positives and then negatives. Wisdom in Sir 4:11-19 appears to be a reliable guide on the way to God. It is Wisdom that introduces her disciples into the close relationship with God. She is a Divine Educator, bringing up human beings in order that they could fully meet God and remain in God’s love.

This note describes Saunders Mac Lane as a philosopher, and indeed as a paragon naturalist philosopher. He approaches philosophy as a mathematician. But, more than that, he learned philosophy from David Hilbert’s lectures on it, and by discussing it with Hermann Weyl, as much as he did by studying it with the mathematically informed Göttingen Philosophy professor Moritz Geiger.

Opis:
The Canticle seen in its literal, non-alegorical or spiritual, sense recounts the story of a profound love relationship between an anonymous man and an anonymous woman. Their mutual love is expressed by the two fundamental terms dôdîm and ’ahăbāh that are mainly used by the bride, hence the feminist approach to the text. These two terms on the lips of the bride do not refer exclusively to the erotic aspect of love, but, to the contrary, implicate an involvement of the whole person of both the bride and bridegroom. The concept of love rises quite often from the sensual description of the body to the transforming experience of love the purpose of which is to create a full and exclusive communion with the beloved. Thus the experience of love in the Canticle utterances formulated by the bride should be inscribed within the context of the creation account (Gen 2) that stresses the communion between man and woman. Love in the Canticle should also be analyzed in the context of aesthetic categories characteristic to poetic compositions that tend to positively transform the object of love by using the language of metaphor and symbol.

The article aims at demonstrating that, by his teaching on human person and his action, St. John Paul II (also known as Karol Wojtyła) implicitly contributed to a resolution of the most serious problem of contemporary philosophy, which consists in separating wisdom from love and substituting wisdom with understanding or knowledge. The author concludes that John Paul II makes a persuasive contribution to recover philosophy as the love of wisdom by (1) identifying truth in the area of freedom, self-fulfillment and conscience, and (2) appealing to man’s honesty and happiness.
