Opis:
The aim of this paper is to define the concept of madness and to present its literary image. To realize this aim, examples of world literature from the period from antiquity to the present have been cited, and the method of using this motif in each of the works was analyzed. It also presents an approach to madness and madmen in particular epochs, citing inter alia the work of Michel Foucault. In the end of the paper, the timeless motif of madness is underlined, which will exist as long as humanity exists.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the description of Woland as one of the main characters of the novel by Bulgakov 'The Master and Margarita', after gaining experience connected with the work on a new translation of this book. The study was conducted on the basis of an in‑depth analysis of the text. The author distinguishes the roles in which Woland appears in relationships with other characters, as well as mental and physical transformations which he undergoes. A lot of remarks concern the changes in stylistic register of his utterances. Moreover, the analysis includes numerous names, which the narrator himself uses in reference to the character. Finally, analogies with other authors are presented (Goethe, Gogol, Poe). The paper is an attempt at reconstructing the viewpoint represented by Woland, including the multitude of elements referring to particular philosophical, political and ethical doctrines. It all leads to the conclusion that Bulgakov’s devil is a multidimensional and ambiguos character, which doesn’t conform to any traditions and explicit interpretations.

Opis:
Representation of various modes, forms, symptoms and degrees of mental illnesses, frequent in The Street of Crocodiles, are analysed in two perspectives: psychological and literary-cultural. Using the tools of modern psychology, the article interprets the pathological symptoms of Touya, Maria, aunt Agatha, and various other characters, most importantly the advancing illness of father Joseph, who displays symptoms of schizophrenia. Schulz uses a language filled with metaphors, blurring the border between symptoms of illness and metaphors, between the imaginary and the real, and between health and illness, norm and pathology, between the human and the animal. Schulz’s representation of madness opposes the modern understanding, which is dominated by analytical, rationalist identification of an illness, related to a socially determined norm of mental health. It brings back the premodern quality to madness, which becomes a divine phenomenon, related to the pagan rite of fertility, to the “orgy of life” and Dionysian element, and to Freudian life drive. Dionysius and Freud meet in an area independent from the rules of culture and reason: the return to nature, including the nature in a human being. Here, madness becomes a “basic figure” and “the ultimate ur-schema”, as they belong to the unintellectual, basic, ecstatic sphere. This is related to the imperative of penetration of areas that threaten the “balance of the soul”, to address the topic that shows “the scar of removal”, and forces us to ask the question of limits of humanity.

a story of maturation
Polish women’s literature
rana

polska literatura kobieca
Opis:
Tematem eseju są tytułowe „strupki”, rany zwykle kojarzone z dzieciństwem, efekt drobnych urazów, przeważnie kolan i łokci, doznanych w trakcie zabaw. To ryzyko podjęła Paulina Jóźwik w swoim prozatorskim debiucie (2019), opowieści o dojrzewaniu młodej kobiety, w której symbolika tytułowych Strupków oddaje gorzko-słodkie doświadczenie domu rodzinnego.
This essay is devoted to the titular “scabs” – wounds usually associated with childhood, the effects of minor injuries, mainly to the knees and elbows, sustained while playing. These are unique wounds, associated morewith joy than with pain. In Polish, “scab” [strupek] is a diminutive form of the word “corpse” [trup], which is awe-inspiring and disgusting. Such a combination of the delicacy of grammatical diminutive with the aesthetics of deadly decay is surprising. That is why this word is used carefully in Polish, and it is an act of courage to place it in a title of a novel. This risk was taken by Paulina Jóźwik in her prose debut (2019), a story about the maturation of a young woman, where the symbolism of the titular Scabs (Strupki) reflects the bitter-sweet experience of the family home.

An increased interest in space in the humanities can be referred to as a spatial, topographic or topological shift. This article is an attempt at organizing these concepts and defining the fundamental differences between them. Based on the findings of European and American researchers (including Edward Soja, Sigrid Weigel, Ernest W.B. Hess-Lüttich, and Joseph Hillis Miller) and a Polish literary scholar (Elizabeth Rybicka), the author tries to distinguish, and define the relationship, between spatial, topographic and topological shifts. This article was inspired by the terminological chaos in the Polish humanities.

Wyszczególnione zostały tutaj role, w jakich występuje Woland w relacjach z bohaterami drugiego i trzeciego planu, oraz przemiany mentalne i fizyczne, jakim podlega.

It has long been known which books were read most widely throughout enlightened Europe and to which intellectual authorities particular social groups referred. After the long history of research about the 18th century, modernity has also inherited various research habits consisting mainly of constant verification of the recognised hierarchy of authors, publications, and actors of intellectual life. However, the question remains: how to study this literary culture in given continent areas? Speaking of literary culture, we mean the prevailing patterns in the reception, evaluation, assimilation and imitation of literature, information and evaluation channels, local conditions that have a decisive influence on choices and opinions. The author proposes to speak about this matter based on the recently completed work on literary culture in French-speaking Switzerland in the 18th century. Despite its specificity and evident provincialism, this example provides material for a general, theoretical and methodological reflection: is it worth researching production from the second (and further) shelf? If so, how should this material be approached? What does it tell us about the evaluation procedures? The article presents and analyses these issues.

Opis:
Basing on the Norwid Bibliography compiled by Wacław Borowy (1946), the author observes that one-fifth of all studies on Norwid in the years 1920-1939 were the work of Vilna people. The author starts his review with Stanisław Cywiński, a Norwid student par excellence. Cywiński worked on a study of Norwid for the monumental publication Wiek XIX. Sto lat myśli polskiej [`The 19th Century. A Hundred Years of Polish Thought'], but vol. 10, which was to have included Norwid, never appeared. What did appear, however, was Cywiński's edition of Norwid's selected poems (Wybór poezyj, 1924) in the Biblioteka Narodowa series, which made it possible to introduce Norwid into schools. The bibliography of Cywiński's Norwid studies, both major and minor ones, comprises thirty-six items. The author continues by reminding the reader of Stanisław Pigoń's source notes on Norwid from the time of Pigoń's Vilna professorship and of the publications on Norwid written during his Cracow professorship and reviewed in the Vilna press. The author then goes on to list the works on Norwid written by graduates of the Stefan Batory University: Wanda Nowodworska(-Achremowiczowa), Zygmunt Falkowski, Władysław Arcimowicz, Janina Budkowska. The new Stefan Batory University professor who succeeded Pigoń in the Vilna chair, Manfred Kridl, accorded Norwid the position of the fourth great Polish poet in his Literatura polska XIX wieku [`Polish Literature of the 19th Century']. Konrad Górski, who lectured by the side of Kridl, contributed somewhat to Norwid studies, too. It was such climate that surrounded Irena Sławińska, later an eminent Norwid scholar, in her formative years.

Temperance literature, though widely popular in America and Britain between 1830–80, lost its allure in the decades that followed. In spite of its didactic and moralistic nature, the public eagerly consumed temperance novels, thus reciprocating contemporaneous writers’ efforts to promote social ideals and mend social ills. The main aim of this paper is to redress the critical neglect that the temperance prose written by women about women has endured by looking at three literary works—two novellas and one confessional novelette—written by mid-nineteenth-century American female writers. These works serve as a prism through which the authors present generally “tabooed” afflictions such as inebriation among high-class women and society’s role in perpetuating such behaviors. The essay examines the conflicting forces underlying such representations and offers an inquiry into the restrictive and hostile social climate in mid-nineteenth-century America and the lack of medical attention given to alcohol addicts as the possible causes that might have prompted women’s dangerous behaviors, including inebriation. This paper also demonstrates the cautious approach that nineteenth-century female writers had to take when dealing with prevalent social ills, such as bigotry, hypocrisy and disdain directed at female drunkards. It shows how these writers, often sneered at or belittled by critics and editors, had to maneuver very carefully between the contending forces of openly critiquing social mores, on the one hand, and not being censored, on the other.

China is one of the very few countries in the world that managed to transform its online sphere both into a vibrant literary scene and into a tool of successful soft power. Some writers who represent the advent of online literature (wangluo wenxue) still enjoy best-selling and long-selling status. Despite that, the wide readership of such authors as Anni Baobei, Han Han or Murong Xuecun has not been followed by significant academic interest. This paper draws from the contribution made by Shao Yanjun to analyze whether the New-Style Literary Mechanisms (such as online literary forums) put forward by him shape textual features, and if so, whether these should be reflected in translation. The research combines literary criticism and translation theory perspectives to present some key features of Chinese Internet Literature by presenting an example of a popular short story authored by Anni Baobei Sisterhood (Qiyue yu Ansheng). The analysis of stylistic and linguistic characteristics of the translated excerpts is conducted from three perspectives: the specific text economy, unorthodox punctuation, and the attempt to recreate the mediatic realm of the source text conveyed inter alia through the approach to CSI (Culture-Specific Items). It is found that texts created under the new-style literary mechanism regime may influence the translation strategy and constitute the novelty of wangluo wenxue.

In order to better understand the relationship between literature and philosophy, the paper takes as its starting point a number of reflections by José Ortega y Gasset; indeed, his ideas help demonstrate the value of literature for philosophical thought. The structure of a literary narrative is an interesting working space for perspectivism, and the literary works of Hervé Guibert serve as a useful case study to exemplify this idea. It will be argued that philosophy and literature are two perspectives that coincide and favour a more complex study of the plurality of differing viewpoints, which applies to both their content and dissimilarities.

The article analyses two methods from the scholarly oeuvre of a great Polish Croatian and Slavic studies scholar Joanna Rapacka (1939–2000). These two methods are very interesting and in a particular manner topical, especially in Croatian philology: due to a reconstruction of historical poetics and research of sources, and because of a deconstruction of national myths and national essentialism in literary historiography. These two approaches are closely linked in an attempt to understand an older, pre-modern literary culture in its original, epochal context.

The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is as another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. All the participants of the exercise wished to see if it would be at all possible to work upon one and the same text, and continue working on it at certain randomly selected points. This short paper is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation. It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by seven students. Each of the six students have translated two pages, the seventh student was supposed to assemble and unify the translated texts, integrating them into a coherent narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were working on the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As it appears it was not very difficult for the students to come up with quite interesting translations, but it was much more harder for them to describe their choices as translators. As one can notice, the exercise went very well, the students entertained themselves, and at the same time perhaps they also understood a little better that the translation processes worked differently within their minds, even though after all they were working on the text of the same short literary work by Bruno Schultz.

Celem tego eseju jest pokazanie sposobu wykorzystania narzędzi mikropoetyki do analizy konkretnego tekstu, opowieści Erskine Caldwella Sługa boży, stanowiącej specyficzny gatunek wypowiedzi literackiej, a także – wpływu The New Journalism na warsztat pisarza. Ważna jest tutaj niewielka objętość analizowanego utworu, przekonanie o roli przypadku, codziennego zdarzenia, styl kolokwialny, brak literackich odniesień i zapożyczeń, szczególny sposób przedstawienia bohaterów.
The aim of this essay is to show a way of using the tools of micropoetics to analyse a specific text, Erskine Caldwell’s novel Journeyman, which represents a specific genre of literary utterance, and also the influence of the New Journalism on Caldwell’s technique. Important here is the small size of the work analyzed, the belief in the role of chance, everyday occurrence, colloquial style, the lack of literary references or borrowings, and the specific method of presenting the characters. A characteristic feature of Erskine Caldwell’s prose is also the dramatization of certain scenes and an effort to “theatricalize” the characters.

The very text is directly related to the text entitled “On the Process of Translation of a Literary Text. A Case Study of “Edzio” by Bruno Schulz (an overview of an exercise)” published a year ago (see Chruszczewski 2019). “The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. This short presentation is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation” (Chruszczewski 2019: 57–58). It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by ten students coming from two different seminar groups. Each of the students have translated from Polish into English a text of a comparable length. All the students are bilingual, and fluent in English. None of them is a native speaker of English. After the translation exercise was completed the texts were assembled and integrated into a coherent literary narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were translating the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As one can notice, it was relatively easy for the students to provide interesting translations, but the majority of them found it exceptionally difficult to describe their choices as translators. The above can be a hint for future theorists of translation studies to start large scale interdisciplinary projects based on the interesting fact that translation processes (in plural!) can work differently within the minds of translators even if they are almost at the same age and they come from quite similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Opis:
Monografia dr Marii Antoniny Łukowskiej Mit Wielkiej Brytanii w literackiej kulturze polskiej okresu rozbiorów. Jednocześnie w pracy ukazane zostały wpływy kultury brytyjskiej na kulturę polską w jej szerokim rozumieniu, w aspekcie jej materialnego, społecznego i duchowego wymiaru. Monografia poświęcona mitowi Wielkiej Brytanii w kulturze polskiej może zatem służyć zarówno literaturoznawcom do badania paradygmatów innych krajów i narodów w kulturze polskiej, antropologom i socjologom kultury do badania rzeczywistego stanu wiedzy i mentalności społecznej, jak i politologom i dziennikarzom do poznawania roli wyobrażeń w procesie podejmowania decyzji politycznych w stosunkach międzynarodowych, tworzeniu wzajemnych sympatii, antypatii i uprzedzeń.
The monograph is the culmination of several years of studies on the re- construction of collective social perceptions of Polish people with regard to Great Britain as a result of the process of building a certain myth of this co- untry and its people in the Polish reality of the period of Partitions based on the sources of universal impact on the collective imagination. The aim of the work is an attempt to reconstruct the myth of Great Bri- tain present in Polish culture from the end of the eighteenth century to the independence of Poland. The historical framework of the project symbo- lically opens and closes in the years 1772 and 1918, respectively, although in the work are also included, if necessary, earlier and later periods. In the context of the monograph the myth is understood metaphorically as a social perception of the country and its people as well as its culture in the broad anthropological sense, based on direct (trips to the UK, mutual contacts, friendships) and indirect sources of knowledge (press releases, reports, dia- ries and memoirs of people who visited Britain, fiction, belles-lettres and popular literature). These sources are treated as cultural texts representa- tive of the respective cultural and literary periods, which can be isolated in a designated time frame. The foundations of the myth of Great Britain ori- ginated in the period preceding the third partition of Poland, in the form of a fascination with the country and its culture. To its spreading contributed the attempts of civilisational and political uplift of the country undertaken by the Polish reformers and the establishment of the first permanent diplo- matic mission in London. Of significance was also the fashionable trend among Polish aristocracy to travel to Great Britain in accordance with the established educational programme. The character of this fascination was however elitist and it concerned a small community of aristocratic intellec- tuals, which was reflected in the contemporary press. It was the period of the Partitions, though, that was to become the most dynamic in terms of the creation, dissemination and transformation of the myth of Great Bri- tain in Poland. It begins with a sentimental literary fascination formed in the Puławy circle, romantic historicism, the emergence of literary trends in Poland in relation to English literature, as well as the first direct transla- tion from the English language. Another source of knowledge were national uprisings, as part of their participants emigrated to Great Britain. In the period between 1831 and 1864, Great Britain became the hub of political ef- forts to restore Polish independence, and subsequently the site of activity of exile groups with different political orientations. Especially after the Spring of Nations they maintained contact with both British and émigré political parties coming from other European countries. This image was also affected by the Polonophile activities of the British (eg. C. Lord D. Stuart, and later Laurence Alma Tadema). The year 1864 began a new era in Polish attitudes towards Great Britain, the symptom of which was but sparse Post-January emigration to this country. Britain ceased to be perceived as a country who- se political intercession to be reckoned with, and it became the place of eco- nomic emigration or a stop on the way across the Atlantic Ocean. This ten- dency became visible especially in a country where the Warsaw positivists, inspired by, among others, the British positivists and the theory of evolution considered Great Britain as a country that represented the highest stage of civilisation. In the press of the second half of the nineteenth century, one may find vast knowledge and numerous commentaries with regard to Great Britain, from the information devoted to famous historical places, its econo- my, culture, society, the British social institutions, to the scientific achieve- ments, etc. The United Kingdom had become a destination for those Poles who followed the models of British agriculture and industry with the in- tention to transplant modern solutions in these fields onto their native soil. The growth of industry in Poland resulted in the arrival of British experts in coalmining and manufacturing. Literature in the period of positivism sho- wed the civilization of Great Britain as an unattainable model and created its image as the most powerful country in the world. At that time appeared the first magazines devoted to English studies, accompanied by increased inte- rest in the English language, as well as a peculiar trend to emulate English customs in Poland. The image of this country gained in popularity, lost its elitist character, and influenced the development of attitudes and customs in Poland (Anglomania, Anglophilia, etc.). The amount knowledge about Great Britain in Poland significantly increased, based on both the direct and indirect sources such as more specialized press, literary images in the posi- tivist literature, as well as on the reception of English literature, particularly novels. The Myth of Great Britain created in the period of positivism in Poland was extremely durable and continued until the outbreak of World War I, when Britain became again a place of political efforts to gain independence, as well as Polonophile activities. In the period of Young Poland this image is developed, along with the promotion of British poetry in Poland, and the complementation of the reception of English Romantic poetry and Victorian poets and artists representing new aesthetics. One can observe a renewed interest in Elizabethan artists, so far unknown in Poland, as well as in the English modernist novel. The regain of independence placed Poland in the position of a political partner of Great Britain, even though it was treated as a weak and „occasional” one. This fact substantially changed the Polish refe- rences to this country and influenced its perception which, however, was not entirely free from mythological elements. At that time Britain had become the great unfulfilled love of the Poles. An attempt to recreate the myth of Britain understood as a collective social perception constructed in time, based on mostly indirect sources of knowledge, has forced the author to delve into such materials, which ma- nifested the state of social mentality of the period, which is the time fra- me of research. On that account, the syntagmatic analysis of selected press texts was carried out, treating them as cultural texts and dividing them into categories such as: direct information about the country, the state and the empire, and on material, social and spiritual culture. Subsequently, the para- digmatic analysis was carried out, in effect distinguishing categories such as: Great Britain, its culture and people in the Polish belles-lettres and fiction; Britishness in Polish material culture; Britishness in Polish social culture; Britishness in Polish spiritual culture. In light of the analysis of Britishness in the Polish press of the period of the partitions one can notice the existence of some specific myths, which constitute the essence of understanding of this country, its culture and pe- ople. It is the myth of liberalism and freedom - political, social, economic, and cultural, which in turn conditioned the other myths such as the myth of progress in all areas of life, the myth of rationality and moderation in making decisions and solving disputes and the myth of pragmatism in eve- ry action. These myths present in the Polish collective consciousness of the period of the partitions were displayed in a pragmatic side of the myth of Britishness in Poland, namely to justify the presence of elements of British culture in our culture. Apart from these, there was also the negative side of the myth of Britishness, reflected in the notion of British national megalo- mania manifesting itself in the faith of the people in the superiority of their civilization over others, which supposedly justified their possessiveness in regard to subordinated peoples and territories, and excessive concern for their own interests. However, the exclusive model of British culture sustai- ned by a consistently created myth had become a point of reference in the culture that strove for independence of Poland.

The article is devoted to defin the conceptual foundations of the study of socio-cultural lines of study literary reading of 5th grade students in the schools of national minorities of Ukraine. The purpose of the study is to identify the conceptual foundations of teaching literary reading in the schools of national minorities of Ukraine (in the framework of socio-cultural lines). Research methods. The main method of creating concepts was the inductive method, and the theoretical methods such as the analysis of philosophical, literary, methodological, psychological and pedagogical literature. The use of empirical methods are limited, among them, a pilot experiment was the main method. A didactic study of the implementation of socio-cultural lines in the context of teaching literary reading involves the deployment of conceptual research in three areas: methodological, theoretical and practical fields. In methodological concept, the status categories of activity and personality are defined. The doctrine of the activities of AK toils the value of different types of teachers and children’s activities, in particular training, their decisive role in the formation of personality in the process of literary reading in Ukrainian language. Understanding the nature of "the identity of the student" requires a teacher of literary reading of the 5th grade students of schools with national languages, in the learning process, to give the instruction for the personal self-development and self-realization through activity and communication in various social environments. The theoretical concept (general scientific and specifically-scientific concept) reflects the relationship and interaction of the various theories, approaches and principles of General scientific and specifically scientific nature in relation to the study of problems of implementation of socio-cultural lines of study of literary reading. The basic idea for solving the problem of realization of socio-cultural lines of study literary reading of the 5thgrade students in schools with national languages of instruction at the application level is to focus educational activities on creation of conditions for proper formation of sociocultural competence of the student through the discovery of the essential forces students to process their own activity and communication with adults and other children. Results: the study concept represented through three interrelated concepts – methodological, theoretical and applied, comprehensively ensures the implementation of the main idea of the study.

Opis:
This article discusses literary performatives and their functions in The History of the Siege of Lisbon by José Saramago through the prism of the definition of literary performatives presented by Irene Kacandes in her article “Are You in the Text? The ‘Literary Performative’ in Postmodernist Fiction”. In order to understand Saramago’s novel in the light of this concept, this work examines the novel in terms of features emblematic of second-person narratives. The point of departure is J. L. Austin’s Speech Act Theory from How to Do Things with Words. The article refers to the theoretical and methodological background regarding Speech Act Theory as proposed by Austin and developed by Searle, as well as further considerations on the application of the theory in literary studies. It demonstrates that literary performatives present in the novel being discussed are built by third-person singular imperatives, first-person plurals (imperative and indicative mode) and impersonal forms. Moreover, it argues that they serve the following functions—constituting the second-person narrative character of the novel, providing the narrative with oral and metafictional character, and pointing the reader to the moment of action they are involved in at the moment of reading.
