Opis:
In Old Polish literature, literary criticism was virtually unknown. In view of the scarcity of appraisals and reviews, a rhyming review written by a second-rate poet from the second half of the 17th century Seweryn Bączalski has extraordinary weight. In a poem Do tego, co już przeczetł, which crowns his 1608 collection of poems Przestrach śmiertelny, Bączalski evaluates the works of several poets from Cracow of that time, taking this opportunity to comment in great detail on Hieronim Morsztyn’s popular poem Światowa Rozkosz, published in 1606. The reviewer was riveted by an apparent clash: throughout the poem, Morsztyn enumerates multitudinous delights, only to unexpectedly deprecate in the ending their value when confronted with death and decay. This discrepancy hardly motivated in the poem and still attracting researchers’ attention, Bączalski motivates by a biographical key presenting Morsztyn as an inveterate womanizer who, finally, ends up ensnared by… syphilis. This experience allegedly changed the poet’s attitude towards carnal pleasures, and Światowa Rozkosz gave this existential discovery of his literary form.

After a brief initial excursus on the topos of illness in literary criticism and the so-called “Narrative Medicine”, I analyse this theme as found in the work of Małgorzata Lebda, and particularly in the collections Matecznik (2016) and Granica lasu (2013), in which the poet tells her personal story, displaying a changing enigmatic nature which is a place of the soul both real and mysterious at the same time. Lebda describes the encounter with the disease in a clear, direct language style and by means of a narrative that gives a therapeutic meaning to her experience, and places it in a natural universe filled with multiple correspondences and resonances. The constant metaphorisation of the poetic images becomes a way to convey evocative, deep emotions which, thus mediated, can express themselves with all their evocative power.

The subject for the critical and literary comments in the present article is, in the first instance, the collection of essays devoted to the literary output of the Irish Nobel prize-winner Seamus Heaney written by Jerzy Jarniewicz and entitled “Wiersze pod dotyk”. Though this is the chief reason, but not the only one, as this seemingly innocent monograph book turns out to be a gem in itself with regard to the poetical artistry of the Polish author of the essays. And so, the reader finds the following: poetical language of description, poetical sensitivity in reading and a particular poetical manifesto that has a programme-character for Jarniewicz-poet. And all this is revealed form the eponymous “in between”, from between the verses, reading material, fascination and connotations of the author.

Opis:
The author analyses the concept of allegory, a classical poetic figure, as a kind of a “travelling concept,” a notion that informs contemporary literary criticism. He argues that the growing interest in allegorical styles of reading in the modern humanities stems from two important sources: the works of Walter Benjamin, who reclaimed the Baroque allegory for contemporary poetics, and Paul de Man, who redefined it as an inherent quality of literature and the universal mode of textual interpretation. The author then examines different ways of employing this modern understanding of allegory (as a topic, style or stylization, and as a way of reading) by three contemporary writers and critics Grzegorz Jankowicz, Alina Świeściak and Rafał Wawrzyńczyk.

At the same time, the review polemicizes with the claim that original metaphors constitute the semantic core of Polish Romantic criticism.

The poem is interpreted as an ironic self-thematic commentary. The poet’s attitude is critical towards different interpretations: conventional, i.e. based on ambiguity, colloquial or stereotypical and academic, inspired by increasingly new theories. The substantial element in the poem is the relation between the subject (persona) and the protagonist that corresponds to and translates into a communicative situation between the author and the reader. The result is complex, intertwined styles and techniques combined with one another. Wiedemann engages in a play with different ways of writing, ironically challenges or undermines poetical strategies to underline the conventionality of literature and communication in general. By doing this, he disturbs the reader by challenging the reader’s reading habits and thus making an impression that the reader is sent away from the poem to a single and unique experience in reality.

The article compares Polish and Anglophone literary-theoretical approaches to religious poetry. It demonstrates that some common tendencies to be found in Polish studies and in English scholarship include drawing on a single religious tradition (Christian, official), focusing on the author and their religious experience, and narrow and/or prescriptive approaches that are sometimes more theological than literary-theoretical in nature. The survey suggests that the most prominent difference is that Polish criticism has produced a long-standing tradition of literary-theoretical studies that develop on or polemicize with each other in an attempt to describe and systematize the field of the intersections of poetry and religion and propose literary methodologies for studying religious poetry, while Anglophone studies do not enter into this kind of dialogue. The Polish studies, if popularized, could help reduce the theoretical and methodological deficit in Anglophone scholarship on the subject.

Opis:
The article discusses the arguments against poetry that were used in Piotr Chmielowski’s Zarys literatury polskiej z ostatnich lat szesnastu [An outline of the literature of the last sixteen years] by its author. The critic’s intention was to diminish the significance of poetry and, in effect, to push poetry to the margin of literary life. To achieve that, Chmielowski presented a number of examples where modern poetry was not capable of grappling with the problems and challenges of the modern world. Chmielowski also instilled a vision in which writing poems itself appeared to be atavistic and as a relic of an earlier stage of evolution. Since lyric poetry made a particular core of literature, to challenge its position in literature in the name of progress made it possible to question all traditional “authorities”. The author of Zarys indicated examples testifying to the vitality of the novel and future possibilities in the development of this particular genre, whereas his formulated accusations against poetry and poets included their general bad condition (physical, mental and psychical). In addition, Chmielowski accused poetry of insincerity and untruthfulness. With regard to the poetics of the discussed poems, Chmielowski just limited himself to briefly formulated allegations and objections of their rhetoricality and epigonic character.

The article attempts to reveal a reconstruction of Piotr Chmielowski’s critical thought regarding the poetical works written by Adam Asnyk (pen-name E...ly). The starting point for the discussion is a set of variations for different editions of Zarys literatury polskiej as well as other works of the critic elucidating the specificity, importance and the character of the poetry of E…ly. The article attempts to show why it was just the figure of the poet that was necessary and constituted a model figure for revealing the attempts of saving continuance of not only Polish poetry but also national culture and heritage. In his critical reflection, Chmielowski tries to find continuity between the Romantic paradigm and the post-January insurgency paradigm that was to define the obligations and the status of poetry, as well as to identify, uphold important question for Chmielowski himself as to why it was necessary to find among the generation of post-insurgency Poles a figure that would resemble Ignacy Kraszewski, a man-institution, and thus provide an exemplary model, necessary and much needed model figure in upholding and maintaining national consciousness and in preserving continuity. It is the culture and literature of the latter half of the nineteenth century that Chmielowski investigates in search of poetry and the poet as an icon of the nineteenth centuryness and modernity in the post-January insurgency non-poetical times. Asnyk can be seen, in Chmielowski’s terms, as an icon of the modern poet, a keystone figure who straddled the line between what can be consolidated and what was left to be saved in order to preserve the paradigm of Romantic poeticalness and the necessity for adjusting to new cultural circumstances and contemporary expectations on the part of receivers.

The issue of subjectivity is raised in the theoretical and critical works on poetry authored by Barańczak, so to speak, marginally. Despite the fact, the issue of identity seems to constitute their core subject and is organically related to other relevant key threads such as, primarily, the issue of the “ethics of distrust”. Interestingly enough, the ambivalence of the situation of an individual, — placed somewhere between the individualistic and the community perspective — which is emphasized by Stanisław Barańczak by making rhetoric figure of paradox particularly privileged — is also expressed in the language in which the critic describes the problem. His observations come down ultimately to one thing: a consistent search in different writers for a confirmation of the assumption on the paradoxical nature and bi-dimensionality of human existence.

Opis:
The outline discusses Stanisław Barańczak’s fascination with Witold Wirpsza’s works. Its clearest symptom was his infection with Wirpsza’s ‘stylistic tissue’, which is something Barańczak himself admitted. This infection is clearly visible in the first three collections: Facial Corrections (Korekta twarzy), Without Stopping for Breath (Jednym tchem) and Morning Journal (Dziennik poranny). The key sources of references and inspirations for these collections were Wirpsza’s poems from the collection Superstitions (Przesądy) and the digressional poem Faeton. The article demonstrates how Stanisław Barańczak presents the readers with a specific ‘key to Wirpsza’ in his works of literary criticism. According to the author of The Diffident and the Proud (Nieufni i zadufani), literary criticism was unable to cope with Wirpsza. What pushed the young poet from Poznan to remodel the reading of Wirpsza’s poetry and to make significant changes to contemporary poetic tendencies was the collection Superstitions (Przesądy) published byWirpsza in 1966, one year after his essay collection Game of Meaning (Gra znaczeń). Barańczak assigned Wirpsza to the language poetry movement. In his later accounts of reading, Barańczak the critic suggested that there was a ‘deep gap’ between Wirpsza’s achievements from various periods of his work. He claimed that Wirpsza was first a political poet, and he wanted to perceive the later stages of the life of the ‘poet-idol’, generally, as undergoing ‘rapid and dramatic changes’: one of the socialist realist poets, experimenter, a difficult poet, original theoretician accused of creating ‘art for art’s sake’ and ‘excessive hermeticism’ and finally an ‘emigrant’ who turned out to be a political writer, only to become, finally and unexpectedly, a religious poet.

How to Read Contemporary Poetry in a Contemporary Way The article constitutes an attempt to pose a question regarding the modes of reading contemporary poetry; at the same time, it ought to be noted that the term contemporary literature is understood broadly and it denotes primarily changes in the modernist and late-modernist literature. It is, on the one hand, the critical writings of Majorie Perloff – described here against the background of the adventures of the American criticism of the 20th and 21st century, and on the other, a reading of Marcin Świetlicki’s single poem Tak, kawiarniany dekadentyzm – that proved to be convenient fields to pose the above question. The thesis concerning the exhaustion of the intentional critical style and mode of symbolist exegesis is accompanied by an attempt to reconstruct the principles which would make it possible in contemporary times to read closely a work of poetry.

The article presents an unofficial discussion that took place between one of the most prominent Polish critics of the late 19th century and Antoni Lange, a raising poet of the 90s, whose work had gained little attention from the older colleague. Mentioned briefly in Chmielowski’s Współczesni poeci polscy in 1895, Lange responded to some of the critic’s fterwards. Chmielowski did not respond to that directly, however, his review of Lange’s volume of poetry published at the time and the will to defend his claims using the adversary’s poetry as a pretext shows that the young poet had succeeded in provoking the respected critic to take defensive position. The two writers, discussing an ongoing ‘crisis’ of poetry, present their own perspectives on the roots of the situation. Chmielowski’s claims from the beginning of the 20th century prove that the dispute, unofficial as it was, was won by Antoni Lange.
