Opis:
The subject of the study are the infinitive subordinate clauses (ICP). These infinitive structures, introduced by a perception verb like voir (‘see’), regarder (‘watch’), entendre (‘hear’), écouter (‘listen’) and sentir (‘smell’), are composed of two complements: a noun phrase and a verb infinitive (j’entends les oiseaux chanter ‘I hear birds sing’). We are interested in ICP in a French-Polish traductological perspective. As this structure, so widespread in French, is not to be found in Polish, this Slavic language offers at least eight different ways of translating it (observed in the corpora), the most frequent of which turns out to be the jak P (‘as P’) structure (*słyszę ptaki śpiewać/śpiewać ptaki ‘I hear birds sing/I hear sing birds’; słyszę, jak ptaki śpiewają/śpiewają ptaki, literally ‘I hear as birds sing/sing birds’). Even though we regularly come across this linguistic phenomenon in our profession (we teach French to Polish bachelor students), there is one basic issue that intrigues us: how do the translators choose one of the eight available structures in their native language? Are their choices random, or lingustically constrained? To answer this thorny question, we have decided to adopt as a theoretical framework (adapting them to ICP) the research tools proposed by Professor Eugeniusz Ucherek (University of Wrocław, Poland, 1982), who originally constituted a method of contrastive French-Polish analysis of prepositions.

Opis:
Linguistic description and language modelling need to be formalny sound and complete while still being supported by data. We present a linguistic framework that bridges such formal and descriptive requirements, based on the representation of syntactic information by means of local properties. This approach, called Property Grammars, provides a formal basis for the description of specific characteristics as well as entire constructions. In contrast with other formalisms, all information is represented at the same level (no property playing a more important role than another) and independently (any property being evaluable separately). As a consequence, a syntactic description, instead of a complete hierarchical structure (typically a tree), is a set of multiple relations between words. This characteristic is crucial when describing unrestricted data, including spoken language. We show in this paper how local properties can implement any kind of syntactic information and constitute a formal framework for the representation of constructions (seen as a set of interacting properties). The Property Grammars approach thus offers the possibility to integrate the description of local phenomena into a general formal framework.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to identify certain limitations in the research conducted in a group of people with intellectual disabilities and people with hearing impairments. On the basis of reports from the field of developmental psycholinguistics it has been assumed that some of the limitations of research in the above-mentioned study groups will result from the shortcomings of linguistic knowledge of these people. It should be emphasised that linguistic difficulties have completely different backgrounds in the selected groups of people with disabilities, which was sought to be explained here. The authors attempt to identify opportunities posed by qualitative methods increasingly used in the social sciences, including special education. The success of the research procedure, both in the paradigm of the quantitative and qualitative strategies, depends on the level of communication skills and language subjects of the research (respondents, but also researchers).
