This paper evaluates the performance of fractional-slot per pole winding configurations for tubular permanent magnet (PM) machines that can effectively eliminate the most undesirable space harmonics in a simple and cost-effective manner. The benefits of the proposed machine topology winding configurations are illustrated through comparison with 9-slot, 10-pole tubular PM machine developed for a free piston energy converter under the same specification and volumetric constraints. It has been shown that the proposed machine topology results in more than 7 times reduction in the eddy current loss in the mover magnets and supporting tube, and hence avoids potential problem of excessive mover temperature and risk of demagnetization.

Jednym z zasadniczych nurtów aktywności naukowej i technicznej w Zakładzie Maszyn Elektrycznych PW w okresie blisko 90 lat jest projektowanie i budowanie prototypów maszyn elektrycznych niekonwencjonalnych. Te nowatorskie prace zapoczątkował Henryk Kozłowski. Od roku 1935 zajmował się badaniami nowego rodzaju konstrukcji silników asynchronicznych ze śrubowym układem blach stojana, której celem było lepsze wykorzystanie materiałów: żelaza i miedzi. Rozwiązanie to uzyskało liczne międzynarodowe patenty. Od lat 70 XX wieku twórcą nowego podejścia do konstruowania przetworników elektromechanicznych, inspiratorem dla młodej kadry ZME i mentorem warszawskiego politechnicznego ośrodka zajmującego się realizowaniem zleceń o szczególnie dużej innowacyjności jest prof. Grzegorz Kamiński. W kierowanym przez niego Zakładzie Maszyn Elektrycznych opracowano algorytmy projektowe, układy pomiarowe i buduje się prototypy maszyn o unikatowych właściwościach. Są one także niejednokrotnie patentowane. W okresie kilkudziesięciu ostatnich lat powstawały m.in. takie konstrukcje, jak: silniki sferyczne, liniowo-obrotowe, pompy ciekłych metali, separatory elementów nieferromagnetycznych, mieszadła, maszyny dyskowe, silniki kinematycznych magazynów energii, silniki napędów głównych pojazdów elektrycznych i wagonów szynowych Personal Rapid Transit.
One of the main streams of scientific and technical activity in the Division of Electrical Machines (DEM) at the Warsaw University of Technology over the past nearly 90 years has been the design and construction of prototypes of unconventional electrical machines. These innovative works were initiated by Henryk Kozłowski. From 1935 onwards, he was involved in research on a new type of design of asynchronous motors with a twisted stator core arrangement, the aim of which was to make better use of the iron and copper materials. This solution was granted numerous international patents. Since the 1970s, Prof. Grzegorz Kamiński has been the creator of a new approach to the construction of electromechanical transducers, an inspiration for the young staff of DEM and a mentor for the Warsaw polytechnic centre involved in carrying out particularly innovative work orders. In the Division of Electrical Machines headed by him, design algorithms and measuring systems have been developed and prototypes of machines with special properties have been being built. They are also frequently patented. In the last few decades, the Warsaw University of Technology has developed, among others, such structures as: spherical motors, linear-rotary motors, liquid metal pumps, electrodynamic separators, stirrers, disk machines, kinematic energy storage motors, main propulsion motors and Personal Rapid Transit rail cars.

The paper discuss a problem of determination of inductances for AC machine windings when saturation of magnetic circuit is not neglected. For such cases, computation of magnetic field distribution in the machine magnetic circuit is a starting point for post processing procedures leading to various values, among others the co-energy in a given area and linkage fluxes of windings. This paper shows how to determine winding inductances in a nonlinear magnetic circuit from these two values and also how to compute directly nonlinear inductances. Problem is not trivial because such inductances are not uniquely determined as for linear case. In the paper a definition of nonlinear inductances is proposed which makes the choice unique.

A control system with a proportional directional throttling control valve or a directional control servo valve, controlling a cylinder (linear hydraulic motor) is used in the ship steering gear drive, in the controllable pitch propeller control, in the variable capacity pump control system for hydraulic deck equipment motors or fixed pitch propellers in small ships (for example ferries). Energy savings in a constant capacity pump operation can be achieved by means of overflow valve controlled by the oil outlet pressure between the directional throttling control valve and the cylinder. Although structural volumetric losses cannot be eliminated in such a system, but it is possible to reduce considerably structural pressure losses, mechanical losses and volumetric losses in the pump, and mechanical losses in the cylinder too. The paper discusses these energy savings using an earlier developed by Paszota mathematical model of losses in elements, the energy efficiency of the system and the operating range of the cylinder. The paper also presents a comparison of the energy behavior of two widespread structures of hydrostatic systems: a standard individual systems with a throttling steering fed by a constant capacity pump. Both system solutions are described and equations of the total efficiency η of the system are presented. Diagrams of energy efficiency of two hydraulic systems working at the same parameters of a speed and a load of hydraulic linear motor, which were different due to structure and ability of energy saving, were presented and compared.

Software DYNMACH has been designed for the dynamic analysis (vibrations) of machines placed on elastic foundation pads assuming non-linear foundation characteristics. Floating platforms of marine engines are designed for noise and vibration isolation between ship hull and engine. Excessive loadings acting on ship hull can be also eliminated by elastic foundation. Analysis of that kind of marine machines is the main target of presented software. It has been assumed that the machines are modeled as rigid bodies while the foundation is treated as a set of elements of non-linear elastic-damping characteristics. Software DYNMACH is the implementation of the Rigid Finite Element Method. A machine can be modeled as a single rigid finite element composed of an arbitrary number of elementary rigid bodies. The following rigid body types are available in the library of the program: a plate, a brick, and a full cylinder. Elastic elements used for foundation modeling can have non-linear stiffness and damping characteristics. These characteristics can be assumed as functions of the foundation displacement or the expected excitation frequency. A built system can be loaded by an arbitrary number of static forces. These static forces are used for a preliminary calculation of strains and the centre of equilibrium, as well as for determination of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the non-linear elastic damping elements in the equilibrium position. Program DYNMACH can calculate the frequencies and modes of natural vibration of the loaded system, as well as calculates of system responses to dynamic excitations. Assuming only small vibration amplitudes the dynamic behaviour of the system can be considered as linear, however, this linear behaviour is imposed on the non-linear equilibrium conditions obtained from the solution of the coupled static problem. Database of different types of rubber machines couplings has been build-in the DYNMACH software.

Opis:
Two concepts for piezoelectric motors are presented in the paper, one with rotating and the other with linear motion. The rotating motor contains ring-shaped element, while the linear motion motor utilizes flat elements. Piezoceramic elements are used in both cases. The design of rotating transducer has been described in detail. This transducer may rotate either continuously with motion interrupted at regular intervals in a manner similar to that similar of a stepper motor. The method of generating moving force in the transducer with linear motion has been described. The operating characteristics of both transducers have been given. Some principal features of supply sources for both transducers have also been presented.
W artykule przedstawiono dwie koncepcje silników piezoelektrycznych - o ruchu obrotowym i o ruchu liniowym. Oba silniki oparte są o elementy piezoceramiczne, silnik o ruchu obrotowym o element w kształcie pierścienia, silnik o ruchu liniowym o elementy płaskie. Opisano szczegółowo budowę przetwornika o ruchu obrotowym, który działa jako silnik o ruchu ciągłym przerywanym w sposób zbliżony do silnika skokowego. Pokazano również metodę generacji siły posuwu w przetworniku o ruchu liniowym. Dla obu maszyn podano charakterystyki ruchowe. Opisano również pewne zasadnicze cechy źródeł zasilania obu przetworników.

The allocation of production tasks to specific production resources is an important part of preparing the manufacturing process. The amount of profit and costs incurred depends on this division. The efficiency of production resources depends not only on the technologies used, but also on the tasks that will be carried out on them. Therefore, the management of machine efficiency includes both an evaluation (analytical and assessment undertaking, e.g. OEE) and planning activities aimed at maximizing the efficiency of machines by appropriately assigning production tasks to them. The article presents the problem of the allocation of production of various products to various production resources, including the efficiency of the use of machines and devices, emphasizing the possibilities of undertaking optimization actions in the cost management process. A mathematical model was formulated for this issue. An algorithm solving the problem of allocation of production tasks is presented. The solution was obtained using the Octave computing environment.

One advantage of multi-phase machines is the possibility to use the third harmonic of the rotor flux for additional torque generation. This effect can be maximised for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) with a high third harmonic content in the magnet flux. This paper discusses the effects of third harmonic current injection (THCI) on a five-phase PMSM with a conventional magnet shape depending on saturation. The effects of THCI in five-phase machines are shown in a 2D FEM model in Ansys Maxwell verified by measurement results. The results of the FEM model are analytically analysed using the Park model. It is shown in simulation and measurement that the torque improvement by THCI increases significantly with the saturation level, as the amplitude of the third harmonic flux linkage increases with the saturation level but the phase shift of the rotor flux linkage has to be considered. This paper gives a detailed analysis of saturation mechanisms of PMSM, which can be used for optimizing the efficiency in operating points of high saturations, without using special magnet shapes.

Linear guiding systems are used in machines for relative translational motion of components, especially for handling devices, which are the basis of production lines. In these operating conditions, the linear guiding systems are dynamically loaded. Dynamical influences may lead to the decrease and damage of bearings. The aim of this paper was to calculate dynamical influences of a mass inertia on linear guiding systems. This issue was solved by a numerical calculation of differential motion equations in 2D. The motion was calculated on an example of a handling machine for welding car bodies. The result is a percentage representation of the dynamic forces on the total load of the linear guiding systems. The result shows the percentage representation in the solved case as more than 10%.

This paper presents an estimator-based speed sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) method for induction machines, where the state estimator is based on a self-contained, non-linear model. This model characterises both the electrical and the mechanical behaviours of the machine and describes them with seven state variables. The state variables are estimated from the measured stator currents and from the known stator voltages by using an estimator algorithm. An important aspect is that one of the state variables is the load torque and, hence, it is also estimated by the estimator. Using this feature, the applied estimator-based speed sensorless control algorithm may be operated adequately besides varying load torque. In this work, two different variants of the control algorithm are developed based on the extended and the unscented Kalman filters (EKF, UKF) as state estimators. The dynamic performance of these variants is tested and compared using experiments and simulations. Results show that the variants have comparable performance in general, but the UKF-based control provides better performance if a stochastically varying load disturbance is present.

The paper presents some issues related to the control of fatigue test machines based on W(t) parameter taking into account the simultaneous interaction of stress and strain. This parameter is defined as a product of these values. Such a research method represents a new approach in fatigue testing with an innovative control system. Because of the W(t) function characteristics, the system presents nonlinear behavior and there is a significant deterioration of the control quality and the controlled signal significantly differs from the reference signal waveform. This problem can be solved by introducing a nonlinear block into the feedback loop. Fatigue tests have been carried out for sinusoidal and randomized reference signal waveforms. These tests have proved that the controlled signal follows reference values with an appropriate control quality.

This paper deals with the problem of preemptive scheduling in a two-stage flowshop with parallel unrelated machines and additional renewable resources. The objective is the minimization of makespan. The problem is NP-hard. Heuristic algorithms are proposed which join the linear programming based procedures with metaheuristic algorithms: genetic, simulated annealing and tabu search algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithms is experimentally evaluated by comparing the solutions with a lower bound on the optimal makespan. Results of a computational experiment show that these algorithms are able to produce good solutions in short computation time and that the metaheuristics significantly improve the results for the most difficult problems.

The energy management is a serious issue in the platforms of mobile robots, and especially walking robots. The solutions are sought so as to obtain the furthest possible range with the energy resources at the disposal. Properly adjusted configuration of the drives and the manner of energy management has a key impact on effectiveness of the drives. The article presents the most important features of the basic driving systems, possible configurations, and steering manners along with the assessment of their effectiveness. The article will present classical and hybrid drives. The authors present a sample analysis of energy “costs” of steering for the selected systems. The analysis will be supported with results of the simulation performed with the use of constructed computer models. The guidelines for designing of the systems for walking platforms will be proposed, enabling to obtain high dynamics and energy efficiency of the system.
