Opis:
The (re)presentation of biographic narrative research benefits greatly from embracing the art of its craft. This requires a renewed interest in an aesthetic of storytelling. Where do we find an aesthetic in which to base our new “performative” social science? The 20th Century was not kind to 18th Century notions of what truth and beauty mean. The terms need to be re-examined from a local, quotidian vantage point, with concepts such as “aesthetic judgment” located within community. Social Constructionism asks us to participate in alterior systems of belief and value. The principles of Nicolas Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics offer one possible set of convictions for further exploration. Relational Art is located in human interactions and their social contexts. Central to it are inter-subjectivity, being-together, the encounter and the collective elaboration of meaning, based in models of sociability, meetings, events, collaborations, games, festivals and places of conviviality. Bourriaud believes that Art is made of the same material as social exchanges. If social exchanges are the same as Art, how can we portray them? One place to start is in our (re)presentations of narrative stories, through publications, presentations and performances. Arts-based (re)presentation in knowledge diffusion in the post-modern era is explored as one theoretical grounding for thinking across epistemologies and supporting inter-disciplinary efforts. An example from my own published narrative biography work is described, adding credence to the concept of the research report/presentation as a “dynamic vehicle”, pointing to ways in which biographic sociology can benefit from work outside sociology and, in turn, identifying areas of possible collaboration with the narrator in producing “performances” within published texts themselves.

Opis:
The explorative study hereby presented is based on in-depth interviews with 16 renowned Israeli writers of prose and poetry. The aim of the study is to examine the identity-stories of these masters of the written word. By the term "identity-story", we relate to the self-reflective or "arspoetic" sides of the life stories our interviewees presented, the hows, whens and whys which had brought them to realize their identities as their cultures' authorized authors or poets. Thematic analysis of these stories, conducted in the spirit of the Schutzian Phenomenological-Interpretive approach, reveals an interesting interplay of two seemingly contradictory core meta-themes - identity-creation and identity-discovery. The present paper is focused on the identity-discovery meta-theme. Unlike the identitycreation meta-theme, which illustrates active, deliberate and conscious processes of identity construction within the social world, the identitydiscovery meta-theme is based on narratives that detect the belief in the feasibility of a transcendental revelation of a given identity, whose roots lies beyond the ties of time and place.

This text examines three life stories about becoming mentally ill and Albert Camus’ fictive narrative “The Stranger”. The main concern is how the social and psychiatry intervenes in the narrative that the interviewees give. Drawing from a reasoning in Michel Foucaults monograph Madness and Civilization and Dorothy Smiths work on relations of ruling the argument in this article is that when becoming mentally ill one is involved in a process of loosing agency in ones own life story. Illustratively with Camus novel the analysis unravel that the interviewees become strangers in their own life story.

Complicated life of frontier (eastern and western) Polish lands shown through life stories of the characters is dealt with. The subjective images of Poland which appear in consciousness of the heroes are of the utmost importance for understand- ing the ideology of the novel. In general the image of Poland in L. Ulitskaya’s novel is connected with semantics of losses, and the break of characters’ real connections with their homeland can be understood as the evidence of trouble, disintegration of integrity.

The article deals with the issue of alternative, counterfactual and non‑existent stories. The first part distinguishes between literary and historiographic presentations of non‑existent worlds – literary visions of alternative stories by Philip Dick or Richard Harris are confronted with texts by Niall Ferguson or Alexander Demandt. The second part discusses methodological‑philosophical issues connected with writing about non‑existent past while the last one was devoted to the Muse of Distant Journeys by Teodor Parnicki, a novel in which two counterfactual stories appear, a journey with a father which did not happen because of Brunon Parnicki’s death, as well as the history of the fourth kingdom when Poland won the war after the November Uprising. Parnicki uses both literary and historiographic conventions of alternative stores in his works. On the one hand, he researches the subject‑matter, e.g. summarises the history of the alternative nation, and, presents episodes from a literary‑political history of the fourth kingdom on the other.

Opis:
In comparison to other classical music players (such as Fiodor Szalapin’s Memories from my life), Arthur Rubinstein’s My early years seem to be a work of a thriller-like fabular layer and an elementary non-fiction value. In my sketch, instead of evaluating this pro-portion, I suggest making a more useful move — a rhetorical analysis of the auto-creatrional pose which is adopted by the memoir’s subject. By means of this I present the memoir I (which easily embodies roles such as a liar, joker, raconteur and sage), as well as point and decipher the mechanisms of popular prose, which the author activates. Thanks to this approach Rubinstein uncovers his unknown face — a conscious writer and amusement culture hothead. Uncovering its codes in My early years with the evolu-tionary biography construction of the main character basically means retelling the musi-cian’s diary — this time as well composed, popular literature. By means of this proce-dure the author’s mistakes and slips of memory become softened, for playing with the reader to persuade him to believe in the maker’s unfailing memory seems to be more important. A separate matter in this sketch is the reflection on the anecdotal-narcisistic layer of the memoir. To open it I use not the rhetorical key, but psychotherapeutic tools, revealing a considerable amount of autotherapy potential in Rubinstein’s memories. Thus, this sketch discloses and exposes the mystifying mechanisms in the work of the great pianist, leveling them with the consoling inclinations of popular biographies.

The categories of life and death in the unbinary model of the world. Selected stories by Jelena Dolgopiat The analysis of selected works by Jelena Dolgopiat leads to the conclusion that the world presented in her short stories cannot be characterized by binary oppositions. In the chaotic contemporary world they lose their sense, because unambiguous separation of fiction from reality is impossible, or maybe the opposition of death and physical life is impossible. Memory grows into the rank of highest value deciding about the life and the loss of it equals death. This presentation of the life and death problem seems to depict in continuation of the idea of Nikolay Fiodorov, that had been taken up before by the Russian writers such as e.g. Andrey Platonov or Vladimir Nabokov. Perceiving and presenting the world as heterogeneous rhizome allows however to discern in Jelena Dolgopiat’s output the postmodernist understanding of existence.

The theoretical construct of balanced time perspective provides a valuable context for the process of searching the possibilities of its psychological applications. The possibilities could be connected not only with the therapeutic, but also with the preventive and educational fields of psychology. Some of the tools for achieving a balanced time perspective belong to existentially-oriented narrative psychology. This article presents one of them, created by myself, a narrative psychological tool for supporting adult development, which is titled Eighty Stories around the Human Life. The (auto)BIOGRAPHICAL Narrative GAME. This method is composed of such elements as a box of 100 coloured copyright playing cards with a dice, The Book of Stories, The Manual with exercises, and The Hypertextual Life-Story Map. All these interconnected game parts had been prepared for the purpose of supporting the receivers’ ("players'") decisions about the content and sequence of an auto-narrative reconstruction of their lives. One of the most important strategies behind organizing this process during (and through) the game, is to practice and improve cognitive-emotional skills of recognizing, enriching, and harmonizing different time perspectives. The deliberate binding of the daily time context of actual experience with the past and future dimension of biographical time of life, connected with the transcendent perspective of life itself, leads the players to construct rich, multidimensional, and personally meaningful life story accounts. Selected important psychological functions of such a beneficial story construction and narrative abilities are described. The article is illustrated by presenting selected “game card exercises” proposed as the "narrative stimuli" for examining human lives in the time perspective context. From this point of view, the psychology of time meets the narrative psychology in the potentially meaningful cooperation, leading to the relatively new field of "applied psychology of time".

Representation of various modes, forms, symptoms and degrees of mental illnesses, frequent in The Street of Crocodiles, are analysed in two perspectives: psychological and literary-cultural. Using the tools of modern psychology, the article interprets the pathological symptoms of Touya, Maria, aunt Agatha, and various other characters, most importantly the advancing illness of father Joseph, who displays symptoms of schizophrenia. Schulz uses a language filled with metaphors, blurring the border between symptoms of illness and metaphors, between the imaginary and the real, and between health and illness, norm and pathology, between the human and the animal. Schulz’s representation of madness opposes the modern understanding, which is dominated by analytical, rationalist identification of an illness, related to a socially determined norm of mental health. It brings back the premodern quality to madness, which becomes a divine phenomenon, related to the pagan rite of fertility, to the “orgy of life” and Dionysian element, and to Freudian life drive. Dionysius and Freud meet in an area independent from the rules of culture and reason: the return to nature, including the nature in a human being. Here, madness becomes a “basic figure” and “the ultimate ur-schema”, as they belong to the unintellectual, basic, ecstatic sphere. This is related to the imperative of penetration of areas that threaten the “balance of the soul”, to address the topic that shows “the scar of removal”, and forces us to ask the question of limits of humanity.

The present article considers the symbolical values of the circle in the novel Cartea șoaptelor (The Book of Whispers) by Varujan Vosganian from a hermeneutical point of view (Gilbert Durand, Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant). Moreover, from a spatial perspective, the circles of death are regarded as a double spiral, negative and positive, and the passage of characters such as Yusuf through this double spiral is the equivalent of a symbolical death and a resurrection in a new form. Moreover, taking over Paul Ricoeur’s idea (Memory, History, Forgetting) of a text being considered a sepulchre for the absents of history (Michel de Certeau), the text of The Book of Whispers is regarded and analysed as a text of the voice of those who have disappeared and died without their story being known. The roundness of character and ultimately that of transcending sufferance that the novel incorporates is rendered exactly by these circle-stories and by their polyphony.
