Opis:
The market system is imperfect from the point of view of improvement of quality of life, the basic components of which are: population health, education, quality of human resources, environmental safety, etc. The market is not focused on manufacturing socially important goods, it has no perfect economic mechanism for securing environmental safety. The search of new ways of economic development has led to recognition that only quality of life can express to the greatest degree the society purposes, as well as the competitiveness of the countries in the world market. Among obvious defects, preventing to determine of problems of the quality of life in Russian Federation, there are: insufficient normative and legal space in the sphere of evaluating quality of life, poor estimation of the development purposes and directions, and poor economic support. For solving each task, it is necessary to develop a socio-economic program with a corresponding financial maintenance, as well as the criteria of estimating the advancement of these programs to the planned purpose – which is the maintenance of the quality of life.

The Game of Life (Life) is one of the most famous cellular automata. The main purpose of this article is to present a network representation of Life as an application of the approach proposed in our previous papers. This network representation has made it possible to investigate Life using a network theory. Some well-known Life patterns are illustrated by using the corresponding clustered networks. The visualization of Life’s rest state reveals the underlying tension as a complex network. The typical network parameters show the characteristics of Life as a Wolfram’s class IV rule. In particular, the in-degree distribution of the derived network from a Life’s rest state shows a scale-free nature, which could be related to the evidence of self-organized criticality.

The presented paper is focused on the problem of social life organization as a source of changes in human behaviour and development. Based on the discussion of literature from the areas of life-span psychology, life-course sociology, and psychology of future-orientation, evidence for the increasing importance of non-normative challenges in human development is presented. Firstly, an overview of changes in social age system in modern society is given to describe the phenomenon of life course deregulation during the late 20th century. Secondly, some of the empirical data on adolescents' life-plans are discussed in a perspective of expected changes in the transition to adulthood of next generations of young people. Regarding adolescents' life planning, it is concluded that young people are aware of changes in the normative structure of life course, and they manifest a long moratorium on entering adulthood, mainly in the area of goals related to family life.

Opis:
As the original and fundamental gift, every human life is inviolable and sacred, that why from the very beginning demands its protection. This message is well built-in the standards of natural law as well as religious laws. From the very beginning her existence, the Catholic Church has been taking position to defend and protect the right of life for every human being. The right to life is not just a matter of belief, nor is just a religious law, but the most fundamental right of every conceived human being. In the moral order the commandment “you shall not kill” is the fundamental principle and standard of universal code of morality, which is written in the conscience of every human being. When the Church and the State defend the right to life also they have to be concern about every woman who conceived the gift of life and should be a handmaid of new life by the fact of conception and birth of a new person. As a consequence, human life of each person becomes the most valuable gift from God, especially for the family and the nation. Both the Church and the State need to be part of building the culture of life rather than the promotion of the culture of death because the culture of death can lead every civilization to fall into ruin. Rules and canonical discipline of the Catholic Church unequivocally defends the life of every unborn child, as well as promote the implementation of the Law which protect the right to life from the moment of conception to the natural death for every human being.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania pilotażowego przeprowadzonego w oparciu o dane pozyskane z wywiadów pogłębionych i kwestionariusza ankiety wśród pracowników, pracodawców oraz przedstawicieli instytucji publicznych i trzeciego sektora.
The subject of the article is an analysis of inter-institutional cooperation for the reconciliation of professional and family life (work–life balance—WLB) in Poland. It presents the results of pilot survey conducted with using questionnaires and focus interviews among employees, employers, as well as representatives of public institutions and third sector. The aim of this article is to show the specificity of the WLB process in groups of employees and employers, and to get an opinion on the possible optimization of the system of cooperation between various types of institutions, which would allow maintaining a balance in this area. The obtained results confirmed the correctness of assumed theses with similar observations in the group of employees and employers conducting small-scale activities and the need to coordinate inter-institutional cooperation, the quality of which is currently unsatisfactory.

Introduction Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating condition that affects the central nervous system and is most common in young people. Over time, the relapses associated with the disease can cause damage, and within ten years of onset, half of patients may experience progressive symptoms. Unfortunately, once a patient enters a progressive stage, there is no longer any improvement or remission, though some patients may experience a longer period of stability. Objectives The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between social and sexual life in patients with multiple sclerosis, considering the progressive nature of the disease, the fluctuating psychological impact, and the impact on their reproductive abilities. Methods The study utilized the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Questionnaire to assess the participants. This questionnaire measures quality of life by asking generic and specific questions related to multiple sclerosis, with a total of 18 items addressing specific needs such as fatigue, cognitive function, sexual function, daily activities, social interaction, and more. Results: The results indicated that most women with multiple sclerosis reported decreased lubrication, while men’s main concern was satisfying their partner. The majority of participants reported being neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their sexual and social life. The frequency of sexual dysfunction was found to be higher in women with multiple sclerosis compared to the general population, with decreased libido being the most commonly reported issue. Individuals with primary progressive multiple sclerosis were found to have significantly increased problems with sexual function. Conclusion This study found a correlation between social and sexual life for individuals with multiple sclerosis. As their social life worsened, their sexual life and reproductive capacity were also negatively impacted.

The paper presents the results of investigations on the life raft leeway induced by the fluctuations of wind direction. The surface current is one of the main factors determining the life raft leeway, but the recently conducted research confirmed that there are also other elements influencing the perturbations of leeway direction. The field experiments showed diversion of the life raft leeway from the downwind direction. This diversion can be explained by the existing cross wind component. The wind tunnel tests allowed to determine the aerodynamic coefficients in the fluid-state control system. On the basis of the test results the expression for the wind pressure force has been formulated. The mean deviation and median of probability distribution of the leeway diversions from the downwind direction has been determined on the basis of investigations conducted at sea. The models for the life raft velocity dependent on wind velocity, developed for the life raft with drogue and without drogue, are presented in the paper.

W artykule wykorzystane zostały zarówno dane empiryczne pochodzące z badań prowadzonych w okresie ostatnich trzech dekad, jak i historyczne materiały biograficzne pochodzące z przełomu XIX i XX wieku.
The paper aims at discussing relations between spatial mobility and life style. The discussion begins with the presentation of life style migrations. It focuses however, on interdependence between both analyzed categories, that is: on life style expectations as one of the pushing factor in migrations decision, and on life style change as an unexpected result of migration. The empirical basis of the presented analysis builds upon data obtained from migration researches curried out in the last decades and from biographical material dated back to XIX and XX centuries.

Interest in “quality of life” issues originated in the 1950s. The concept found applications in fields such as economics, social policy, medicine, sociology and psychology. Quality of life could perhaps also be an object of study for security sciences as well. Despite the continued popularity of this category, social scientists are yet to develop a commonly agreed upon definition of the concept. This paper constitutes an attempt at answering the question of whether the need for security is related to quality of life and whether it is valid to introduce a new conceptual category in the form of quality of life security. If so, then it is necessary to determine whether it is a measure that is subjective or objective. Human needs such as security and quality of life are what motivates human actions and activity. If one of the above needs is not being met, the individual become destabilised. The homogenisation and standardisation of scientific concepts would render it possible to compare data from an interdisciplinary point of view.

The aim of the paper is to depict complicated story about the philosophy underling still life in the different cultural and historical context. The author starts from Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit in which the image of decay is contrasted with the promise of eternal life. It is the point of departure for the interpretation of modern art and the exploration of various ideological references of contemporary still life. Nowadays art loses transcendental insight and focuses on the pure horror of death. Beauty is replaced by disgust. This thesis is illustrated by works of: Pablo Picasso Sam Tylor-Wood, Michel Blazy, and Zoe Leonard. The only consolation which art can offer is grotesque, the eternal return which is showed in Sam Tylor-Wood’s work, or continuous series of transformation in works of Michel Blazy, the image of life which permeates death and death permeated by life.

This study aims to explore the inner world of people suffering from depressive disorder. Four people hospitalized in Prague Psychiatric Centre were interviewed. Method of Grounded Theory and discursive analysis revealed a specific way of depressive thinking and experiencing the self and the outer world. Depressive individuals manifest deficit in introspection. They do not perceive themselves as the authors of their lives and they show a tendency to look for external, estranged meanings of life. Combination of these attributes was found to be possible psychological cause leading towards the outburst of depressive disorder. Significant similarities were found between research results and C.G. Jung´s understanding of depressed people, which he describes through energetic model of libido.

The aim of this text is to consider whether the meaning of life and purpose of life is the same. These philosophical investigations assume axiological objectivism, which claims two things: 1) values are a characters or qualities of objects, 2) phrases like ‘X is good’ are sentences in logical sense. As the main methods used in investigations was conceptual and linguistic analysis, which have been used to characterize the notion of ‘life’ and ‘meaning’. This step allowed to precise notion of ‘meaning of life’ and allowed to consider the titled question. Result is negative: meaning of life is based on values, and not on arbitrarily taking purposes. If meaning of life is a some kind of essential good, then purposes cannot make life meaningful, if themselves are not valuable.

The birth of a child is a major event in family life, which makes parents take on an important role in their lives, characterised by new tasks, chief among which are the care and upbringing of their offspring. Unfortunately, in many families, some factors emerge that may affect their functioning, disrupt the course of family life, and leave a permanent mark on the family’s history. Such a situation can be difficult for many –and many parents find the process of accepting a child with a disability (Down syndrome) and themselves as parents of a child with Down syndrome a long and arduous journey, since taking care of a child, upbringing and supporting their development is an issue in itself, but also a challenge for parents. In many cases, both the child and their parents need support in their daily life, ensuring their high quality of life. The objective of this study is to outline the functioning of families of children with Down syndrome. Due to the complex nature of the issue at hand, only selected aspects of the functioning of families were diagnosed, showcasing the changes in the family life and its functioning as a result of the birth of children with Down syndrome. The study was based on qualitative methodologies, by analysing individual cases using interview technique and interview dispositions. The research group comprised 10 families of children with intellectual disabilities, and the interviewed group was made up of 10 mothers and 3 fathers in Zielona Góra.

In search of answers to these questions we refer to integral anthropology with personalistic profile. In the light of such anthropology human value and dignity of human life is not a matter of the contract or situational needs, but based on the objective foundation of humanity, natural inalienable human rights and universal principles to protect the value and dignity of human life. Our analysis is an attempt to show from the perspective of research in certain areas of discussion about the value of human life and the responsibility for human life.

Using dynamic life tables this article illustrates the inhibition of the growth rate of life expectancy in Poland in recent years. In order to do this, the article exploits data from 2008–2018 and the dynamic extension method proposed by Frank Denton and Byron G. Spencer, which changes the assumption of constant death probability to the assumption of constant dynamic change in death probability. This method has not yet been used in the Polish literature or used with Polish life tables. The article finds that due to the inhibition of growth of life expectancy in 2016–2018, the dynamic life expectancy in 2018 shortened by 3.5 years for women and 6.6 years for men in comparison to dynamic life expectancy in 2013. Moreover, the losses in dynamic life expectancy are mostly visible for young and middle-aged groups. Further, the shortening of dynamic life expectancy for age groups below 80 is greater for men.

The difference between the teachings of St. John Paul II and the teachings of Benedict XVI may be described thus: while the Polish Pope focused on the personal human dignity and thus attempted to restore in man the dignity of God's image, expiated with Christ's blood, Benedict XVI attempted to demonstrate God's priority in man's personal and social life. He very boldly opposed any contemporary trends which replace God with man, demonstrated the harmful consequences of such ideologies and sought God's primacy in a man's life. God deserves that central position, as He is the Creator of man, sustains man's life and actions, is close to man through Jesus Christ and through the Church, introduces man into the communion of life with Him and constitutes the ultimate fulfilment of human life. As such, the subject discussed appears to be an important element of the teachings of Benedict XVI, as well as an important part of every man's life.

Emerging adulthood, in numerous individual biographies, also in the case of disabled people, is the time of permanent need for self-actualisation and time of verifying one’s subjective vision of “being an adult,” i.e. being responsible for one’s own decisions, pursuing professional and economic independence. Due to developmental acceleration, sociological shift in terms of undertaken roles and realized developmental tasks as well as their moratoriumlinked delays, it is also the time conducive to educational activity. This psychological time of a young person, its course and specificity depend, to a large extent, on numerous (micro-, mezo- and macro-) conditions of family life and social life in today’s world which is more competitive and less predictable than it used to be for generation of the late 1990s. All of these factors contribute to the fact that maturing to adulthood seems to be a state which is harder to achieve nowadays. It is displayed in the form of delaying the moment of taking up a job or other important decisions in family and relationship contexts. The study aims to present the selected aspects of daily life of disabled young adults, described in the context of developmental tasks of this period and considering the perspective of investment in relationships, development of one’s own resources, pursuing education and entering the job market which are all, from a temporal perspective, a chance of complementing one’s own identity.

The article presents a description of Elk after World War 2, seen from a perspective of individuals. The pictures of the town are based on the memories of 15 people, who live in Elk nowadays. The selection of respondents was targeted. The group is differentiated in the categories: age and place of origin. Among the interviewees there are people, who were living in Elk and the nearby areas before World War 2, also those who moved there after the war from Vilnius Region, Republic of Lithuania, nearby areas of Grodno (Hrodna) and Nowogrod, Suwalki Region, Region of Kurpie, surrounding areas of Grajewo and Szczuczyn, and finally those who were born after World War 2 in Elk and in other places. The respondents see Elk differently, because they have been living there during various historical periods, however their individual perceptions and memories were taken into consideration. The following questions have been asked: what types of accommodation were Elk citizens living after World War 2, how they perceived their city in different historical periods, what were they doing for living, how looked their cultural life, what were their social relations? Data analysis, based on the interviews, answers above questions and presents subjective picture of everyday live. The article presents many aspects of life common for people from various social backgrounds.

Climate change has become a popular topic with a strong presence in media, political, scientific and ethical debates. This raises a question as to why we are not acting in accordance with our knowledge and are unable to do enough to protect our future. The paper argues that the problem partly arises from a lack of philosophical reflection about relations between different aspects of our personalities. Those different aspects are presented based on the reflections of Thomas Nagel on good, moral, and rational ways of life. I claim that all three need to be taken into consideration in order to answer challenge raised by the environmental dangers we are facing.

The objective of this article is to examine how people value two different attributes of Value of Life Year (VOLY): life expectancy and the quality of life. The results of the first VOLY estimations conducted in Poland are discussed and compared with Polish cost-effectiveness thresholds for medical treatments in the period 2008–2020. The Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) method was used to value two attributes of VOLY: increase in life expectancy and improvement in the quality of life. The VOLY research was conducted in two populations: general and dialysis. Depending on their current health status, people value increased life expectancy and improvement in health quality differently. In light of these results, the VOLY should be differentiated. Also in the Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) indicator, the weights of the attributes of length and quality of life should be varied according to different states of health. A uniform cost-effectiveness threshold is not justified from the perspective of stated preferences. Cost-effectiveness thresholds based on demand-side values should be differentiated. Current Polish cost-effectiveness thresholds are overestimated compared to valuations based on stated preferences. The article presents the first estimations of two attributes of VOLY: life expectancy and the quality of life, carried out in Poland.

Opis:
Astroecology concerns the relations between life and space resources, and cosmo-ecology extrapolates these relations to cosmological scales. Experimental astroecology can quantify the amounts of life that can be derived from space resources. For this purpose, soluble carbon and electrolyte nutrients were measured in asteroid/meteorite materials. Microorganisms and plant cultures were observed to grow on these materials, whose fertilities are similar to productive agricultural soils. Based on measured nutrient contents, the 1022 kg carbonaceous asteroids can yield 1018 kg biomass with N and P as limiting nutrients (compared with the estimated 1015 kg biomass on Earth). These data quantify the amounts of life that can be derived from asteroids in terms of time-integrated biomass [BIOTAint = biomass (kg) × lifetime (years)], as 1027 kg-years during the next billion years of the Solar System (a thousand times the 1024 kg-years to date). The 1026 kg cometary materials can yield biota 10 000 times still larger. In the galaxy, potential future life can be estimated based on stellar luminosities. For example, the Sun will develop into a white dwarf star whose 1015 W luminosity can sustain a BIOTAint of 1034 kg-years over 1020 years. The 1012 main sequence and white and red dwarf stars can sustain 1046 kg-years of BIOTAint in the galaxy and 1057 kg-years in the universe. Life has great potentials in space, but the probability of present extraterrestrial life may be incomputable because of biological and ecological complexities. However, we can establish and expand life in space with present technology, by seeding new young solar systems. Microbial representatives of our life-form can be launched by solar sails to new planetary systems, including extremophiles suited to diverse new environments, autotrophs and heterotrophs to continually form and recycle biomolecules, and simple multicellulars to jump-start higher evolution. These programs can be motivated by life-centered biotic ethics that seek to secure and propagate life. In space, life can develop immense populations and diverse new branches. Some may develop into intelligent species that can expand life further in the galaxy, giving our human endeavors a cosmic purpose.

Aim. The purpose of this article is to define the scientific paradigm in understanding of the concept of “life strategies of a person” and to conduct an empirical research in order to determine average values of indicators of life meaningfulness and subjective perception of the past, present, and future of senior students in Latvia. Methods. The research is based on the theoretical study of different conceptual approaches to comprehension of the phenomenon life strategies. Following research methods were used:1) Dmitry Leontiev’s test defined in “purpose life orientations” method (2006); for data acquisition; 2) a method “past, present and future” by Svetlana Mezhvidova (2001); 3) “colour test” method invented by Max Lüscher (1990). For processing data following analysis methods were used: processing of quantitative data by applying methods of mathematical analysis of statistical data as well as forecasting analytical methods.; Student’s t-test to compare medians of two independent samples; Spearman’s rank correlation; processing of qualitative data: content study and analysis, coding and processing of the obtained data; elucidation of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results and conclusions. The theoretical analysis suggests that there is a definite scientific paradigm in understanding of the concept of life strategies of senior students. The empirical research showed that Latvian senior students have the average indicators of sense life orientations and that they are quite low according to statistically different scales. It characterises the insufficient process of setting and defining goals by senior students, the achievement of which would help them acquire the sense of meaningfulness, direction, and hopefulness of future life.

This article presents Artificial Life, an interdisciplinary field of study that helps understand life on Earth (life as we know it) and other, possible kinds of life (as it could be). Artificial Life research builds models of life and synthesizes related phenomena and processes in all currently available media – software, hardware and wetware. The first part of this work focuses on Artificial Life as a research field. In the second part, three exemplary computer science algorithms are shown that are inspired by biological processes. These are evolutionary and coevolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence and ant algorithms, and artificial immune systems. The final part of this work provides a number of reflections on the goals of Artificial Life research, human nature and limitations, and our problems with evaluating complex outcomes of digital life experimentation.

Discovery and characterizations of extrasolar planets suppose that some of them possess physical conditions close to those of Venus. Therefore, the planet Venus, with its dense and hot (735 K) oxygen-free atmosphere of CO2 (mostly), having a high pressure of 9.2 MPa at the surface can be a natural laboratory for this kind of studies. On October 22/25, 1975 and March 1/5, 1982, experiments in television photography instrumented by the landers Venera-9, -10, -13 and -14 [1], yielded in large number of panoramas of the Venus surface (or their fragments) at the landing site. Over the past 31 and 38 years, no similar missions have been sent to Venus. In connection with the interest in what kind of life is possible existing on some of the exoplanets, the VENERA panoramas fit for analysis were re-processed and re-examined. A few relatively large objects were found with size ranging from a decimeter to half meter and with unusual morphology. The objects were observed in some images, but were absent in the other or altered their shape. Some of them were reviewed in Ksanfomality, 2012. Important is a search of Venusian flora. The article presents some of the obtained results.

The Catholic religion has been inextricably connected with the Polish state through numerous historical experiences. The aim of the research (N=238) is to check whether religiosity affects the perception of the importance of religious principles in everyday life and religion in political life. In the presented approach, religiosity was a multidimensional variable and was conceptualized using a modified five-point Religiosity Centrality Scale (Huber 2003). It was confirmed that all dimensions of religiosity are significantly related to the assessment of the importance of religious principles. The dimension that showed the strongest correlation with the created variables was the dimension of religious cult, and the dimension that correlated the least was the dimension of reading the Catholic press.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

Opis:
The application of the work-life balance conception has become increasingly popular in recent years. This conception draws not only from legal solutions, but from psychological sciences and those related to human resources management. In the field of labour law, the instruments used may be, inter alia, rights related to parenthood (maternity, paternity, parental and extended parental leave), the use of fixed-term contracts or part-time employment, the use of individual working time schedules, the use of task-based schedules, equivalent or intermittent working time, telework regulations, variable work start and end times. However, employment in professional sports is atypical. The very essence of providing sports work is different from the essence of performing both office and industrial work. It consists in the provision of a special type of work of a multiple nature aimed at maximising the performance of athletes, carried out for profit. The athlete’s ability to achieve success results from the effect of actions taken as part of the employment relationship with the club as well as from leisure activities. Such activities include preparing appropriate meals, keeping a balanced diet, refraining from an unhealthy lifestyle and from the use of unauthorised substances, not using drugs that could be considered doping, taking care of proper regeneration and rest, and refraining from betting on matches in the practiced sport discipline. Herein, firstly, the characteristics of sports work was presented and, secondly, the possibilities of using work-life balance tools in shaping everyday sports work were analysed. The paper analyses the phenomenon of blurring personal and professional lives among athletes. The main conclusion of the paper is the inability to effectively guarantee a work-life balance among athletes, and that athletes can effectively use legal tools of WLB only if they simultaneously perform services or work elsewhere. The paper uses a dogmatic and legal method (analysis of the literature on the subject, analysis of normative acts) and the results of research carried out by the author, i.e. a survey addressed at professional athletes

The word “life” and its beginning represent a series of phenomena that relate to different areas. The explanation of this term, its value and its origin can be observed in biology, anthropology and also in theology. When it comes to the question of when human life begins, we find different answers, whether it be a religious point of view, claiming that life begins with conception, or bioethical or philosophical points of view. “Christian bioethics not materially equivalent to a secular bioethics appears particular and sectarian rather than universal” (Engelhardt 2000, p. 1). The question of the value of life is also consulted in various areas. In biology, life is a phenomenon that takes place in cells, in individual organs, and ultimately in the whole organism. From an anthropological point of view, we distinguish three aspects of life: its corporeality, its psyche and personality and also its social-com- munication aspect. From the theological point of view, human life is a gift that comes from God and is something sacred that deserves respect. Life is something that goes beyond our everyday life and leads to the foundation of the meaning of all life and our whole being. Since the beginning of rational thinking, we have been trying to explain life and its beginning to various philosophers who associate this issue with the relationship between body and soul. There are opinions on their indivisibility, but also dualistic concepts. We encounter here the theories of the immortality of the soul, the existence of the soul according to Plato but we also find opinions on the non-existent soul. This relationship of body and soul is most important at the critical points of our earthly life, namely its birth and death.

Nowadays more often people are asking about the meaning of life. It is a fundamental question that every human being faces. Man is asking whether life is worth living, what to do to make our life meaningful?A human being, among many needs, has the need for discovering the sense of life, the need comes from the very core of human existence as placed in time and connected with the phenomenon of passing away. Discovering the sense of life leads to the experience of happiness, joy, and to inner life lived much more to the full. Showing the meaning of life and helping to find that meaning are very important functions of religion. Due to it, a man is able to live one’s life, ambitions, goals, joyful moments as well as his or her suffering in the light of deeper understanding. Religion is the one that can often bring the richest and deepest answers to the question of the two meanings: the meaning of life and the world.

The problem of work-life balance applies to employees of all ages because of their numerous obligations. With age, life and social roles and obligations change. Young workers find it difficult to reconcile work and caring for young children. The obligation to take care of dependents, especially elderly parents, disabled or chronically ill family members, primarily affects older workers (50+). Therefore, employees throughout their working life cycle require support in reconciling work and "life" (especially the family). Various solutions offered by employers can help. Flexitime and special arrangements regarding time off, including that for men, are among the most important ones. The aim of this paper is to present the problem of reconciling work and family life from the point of view of workers of different ages: defining the concept of work-life balance and to present some good practices in this area.

Quality of life – terminological arrangements
Opis:
Psychological well-being is treated in psychology as a constitutive element of quality of life, expressed in a subjective aspect, determining the satisfaction of the individual with personal life, or also treated as a synonymous term. Most psychological theories focus on the subjective approach, in which quality of life is understood as psychological well-being units (Bartosz, Klebaniuk, 2006; Czapiński, 2008;, Derbis, 2000; Diener, Lucas, Oishi, 2008; veenhoven, 1996, 2005; Zalewska, 2003). In this perspective, various aspects of life are assessed from the perspective of the individual who performs the assessment process using their own individual criteria. Mental well-being indicates an individual experience of contentment and happiness in life. This assessment includes both cognitive judgments about the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, as well as emotional responses to occurring events. In this sense, psychological well-being is a broad concept that enables people to make judgments about their lives, instead of relying on external quality assessments of their own lives.

The article focuses on the reflection of my research experience in obtaining qualitative data using narrative interviews. I confronted my own research experience with the phenomenological methodology of Alfred Schütz, dramaturgical sociology of Erving Goffman, and interpretative sociology of Max Weber. The article discusses three problems that emerged during a longitudinal study of everyday life transformation in the long-term horizon of sixty years: 1. How to create a concept of everyday life so it serves not only as a tool for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, but also as a tool for understanding the meanings of the examined empirical world; 2. How to discursively create an image of everyday life transformations during an interview between a participant and a researcher and what it means in relation to the research subject; 3. How to reach understanding between the participant and the researcher during a face-to-face interview.

The results indicated that humility may serve as a predictor of intrinsic aspirations and subjective well-being. Furthermore, it was established that intrinsic aspirations correlate positively with self-acceptance and acceptance of reality whereas extrinsic aspirations correlate negatively with a lack of desire for control. Two dimensions of humility: (a) recognizing one’s own limitations and (b) self-acceptance and acceptance of reality positively correlate with subjective well-being.

The subject literature gives a lot of papers concerning research on quality of life in various types of local systems. However, the lack of precision among empirical analyses on rural areas quality of life is evident. Research including these issues especially among rural local systems is essential taking into account at least two main reasons: the share of rural areas and their inhabitants in colonial net of Poland and big disproportions among socio-economic level of rural areas development in comparison with urban ones. Quality of life research usually includes two dimensions: objective quality of life which meaning is similar to the term of conditions or level of population life and subjective one focused on the sense of psychological welfare and life satisfaction. The aim of the paper is to show disparities in the level of objective quality of life in rural communities of the Łódzkie Region. Presented deliberations result from the analysis of existing data and are to highlight the problem of the significant heterogeneity of rural areas among the same region.

Opis:
The author of this article analyses the crisis of social ties as a huge challenge for the Christian vision of social life. Firstly, he refers to the moral and religious crisis of the post-modern era, and the depreciation of the social status of the human. Then, he presents the uniqueness of human being as well as potentiality. According to the Christian integral anthropology, presented by personalism, man remains a spiritual and material coexistence. In the last part, the author underlines the Christian idea that a society should acknowledge the dignity of each of its members, as well as guarantee the optimal functioning of human communities. Consequently, social procedures and institutions should be preceded by a consensus assuring the ethical minimum. If a society does not accept the fundamental values like: the dignity of every human being, the protection of their life, justice, equality, solidarity, it cannot function, at least not as a community of persons.

The answers to these questions are trying to find peace of life satisfaction abstinent addicts, which may be on one side of a subjective construct, on the other hand, the starting point for assessing the broader concept of quality of their lives.

Opis:
In recent years in demography there has been a growing discussion about the relationship between life expectancy and lifespan inequality. It appears that in the long run this relationship tends to be strongly linear – countries with the longest life expectancy are also the most equal. This article takes a closer look at countries that went through long periods of life expectancy stagnation and shows that during those times they also experienced a reduction in inequality, mainly due to a large decrease in infant mortality. However, if only adult mortality is taken into account inequality was stagnating or even rising in many cases. Particularly interesting is the fact that a similar pattern of the relationship between life expectancy and lifespan inequality was observed both in Eastern or Western Europe.

In this article, the author attempts to identify the difficulties that young adults encounter in constructing their own lives. The article presents the results of pilot studies with twelve people aged 22 to 34. Thanks to the dialogue method and critical analysis of the content of Internet forums and social networks, the author introduces the difficulties encountered by young adults and symbolically opens the world of problems experienced by them. Young adults indicate great difficulties in building a long lasting relationships with other people. In addition, these difficulties result from developing a professional career. On the base of young people’s statements, the author also identified difficulties related to the implementation of daily duties imposed by reality and difficulties in pursuit of exclusivity forced by post-modernity. According to the author, the answer to the experienced problems in creating one’s own life may be a consulting offer- a new life design counselling paradigm proposed by Mark Savickas.

The articles brings up a question about everyday life as a space to adulthood experience. Its purpose is to take note of the significant role that everyday life may play in the informal adult education. As a standpoint in present reflections, the author takes on Maria Szyszkowska’s Philosophy of Everyday Life perspective, the latter being oriented above all to positive identification of the adults activities with their own lifestyle. The article with its theoretical unfolding of author’s perceptions based on many years of research, convinces us to recognize everyday life as a vital value in life and to make everyday life a matter of self-development of an adult as well as betterment of the relation with other members of the society.

Opis:
The paper presents the Humanistic Model of Assisting the Development. Understanding the dynamic and changing relationship between the human and the world, as perceived from the time perspective by the aided person, constitutes the basis of the aided development. In this process the feedback is focused on the concept of life – the system of opinions and beliefs concerning life – which includes the following subsystems: knowledge about life, values – directions of the life path, life goals, goal realization schemes, attitude to the self, attitude to the others, moral control of actions, heuristics of the global assessment of life and time perspective. The concept of life is created as a result of understanding and experiencing the relationality of the world available thanks to consciousness. In order to make actions and their effects (events) available to consciousness, one has to ascribe meaning to them. Obtaining access to the ‘world’ of meanings of a person in a problematic situation is a key element in understanding such people, and one of the cognitive methods is dialogue with the aided person, which helps those who want to understand. The aim is to change the concept of life in order to solve the problem. This method can be supplemented with selected techniques focused on the development of skill and ability if the aided person thinks that their effects will help to fulfi ll the concept of life.

Opis:
The writings of Corpus Dionysiacum present a concept of life which is different from the one that we profess nowadays. Its view is backed up mainly by the Platonic tradition, which since the times of Plato has tended to see life as an intellectual principle. Therefore, in the Neoplatonic system we can find the conviction that life, in its fullest sense, is intellectual and at its peak is a vision of the One. In the system of Proclus, life, apart from being a principle, is also a god and the main principle of the whole world of intellectual and intellective gods. Pseudo-Dionysius in his writings exploits the concept of the unparticipable and participable principle, and since God is for him Trinity completely beyond participation and knowledge, the divine names play the role of participable henads. However, for Dionysius, names are neither hypostases nor living gods, which is clearly visible in case of the name of Life. All things participate in the name of life and in this name God is the only principle of life in the universe. However, life is not a property to own, but rather a constant struggle to approach the Trinity. Therefore, by committing a sin, an angel or a man loses life, which in the case of a man can be regained through sacramental activity. An analysis of the thoughts of Pseudo-Dionysius reveals a conception of life which is unified contrary to its shattered modern understanding. While biological, mental, moral lives fundamentally differ for us, for Dionysius those are merely aspects of the same thing, and therefore in his view life can be lost and regained not only in the metaphorical, but also the ontological sense.

Kitsh start shaping choices and is responsible for people’s thinking about themselves and their future. It would not be so dangerous if they would exist unchallenged patterns and valid norms that men could be referred to them if necessary. Even in the last century, unchanging values one could find in the school, family life, science or art. However, much has changed in the twenty-first century. The rank and impartiality of science were questioned. Art – attracted by chance of easy popularity, was seduced by kitsch. Unattractive school pedagogy together with a family are in a constant crisis. It make kitsch easier to find comfortable nestle in young heads. The consequences do not let you wait. There appears to be lowering the requirements, resignation from the effort of development. It start to be interesting to settle for a smaller and what is undemanding. When we thinking about the future, we choose life strategies „lined” with the kitsch and perpetuating shoddy templates of achieving life goals.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease. Due to a constantly growing rate of incidence and the lowering age of PD patients it is becoming a more serious social problem. The aim of this study is to assess the quality of life amongst care givers for people suffering from Parkinson's disease. The work includes research on the influence of physical rehabilitation of PD patients on the quality of life of their care givers. The research covered care givers (n=50) of PD patients diagnosed with third stage PD according to the Hoehn and Yahr classification. The diagnostics survey with a questionnaire addressed to care givers looking after PD patients was used. The questionnaire was created by the authors of this paper. The survey consisted of two parts, in which the first was to obtain basic information on the present status of the care giver, while the other was to verify life satisfaction level, using Jurczynski's Scale of Life Satisfaction. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in all analyzed statements between groups. Better effects were observed in the group participating in rehabilitation. Care for people suffering from PD affects the quality of life of caregivers. Participation in the process of rehabilitation of patients with PD improves the quality of life of caregivers.

Providing informal care to adults, especially elderly people, may affect many aspects of caregivers’ life, such as: physical and mental health, financial situation, social contacts, etc. Supporting dependent seniors is associated to a higher level of stress, burden and depression as well as higher mortality. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between caregiving for adults and the subjective quality of life among Poles aged 50–69. We took into account not only the fact of providing care to adult people, but also its beginning, continuation and ending between waves. We assumed that subjective quality of life may be expressed by two variables: one describing life satisfaction, and the second one – loneliness. We used the panel subsample from the Generation and Gender Surveys (GGS) carried out in Poland in 2010/2011 and in 2014. We found a negative effect of stopping caregiving between waves on wellbeing of women-carers, which may be related to the loss of a close person. Moreover, providing care for a longer period of time increases loneliness, which confirms that providing support to others may lead to isolation and smaller social networks.

Satisfaction with one’s life is one of the fundamental values in the life of every person and every stage. In gerontology an important goal is to life, also meant the satisfaction of the experience of years. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between the variables of quality of life and the criteria of subjective life satisfaction in the elderly. A group of 41 people - the city residents aged 60 to 86 years. The study used the Quality of Life Scale (QOLS) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Relationships between variables and parameters of the quality of life of satisfaction shown by the Spearman rank order correlation. Interdependence of the variables presented in Tables 2-7. Conclusions: 1. High sense of satisfaction with life in the elderly is associated with the achievement of objectives in the most important spheres of life. 2. Subjective evaluation of life satisfaction is related to the degree of satisfaction with the functional aspect of physical health with emotional needs and satisfaction with social interaction.

Entrepreneurship impacts on many aspects of social life. It influences—directly and indirectly—the lives of individuals, and thus the quality of life. The objective of the presented article is an assessment of the relation between entrepreneurial stance and quality of life. Analysis is intended to verify the hypothesis that the stronger the entrepreneurial stance the higher the quality of life in subjective, objective, and general dimensions. The empirical basis behind presented data is the result of representative quantitative surveys as well as research on people engaged in eco¬nomic activities. The presented results may prove inspiring for both academics and practitioners concerned with social life. Above all, this may be true in the case of those who want to achieve more in tangible and intangible matters. They may also serve as inspiration to those who are involved in human resource management.

Opis:
This review aims to summarize our most recent knowledge of the unique mechanisms employed by digeneans to complete their complex life cycles. It is based on validated data from scientific literature and integrates both authors’ personal experiences. Several dynamic strategies utilized by digeneans are discussed in relation to their presence in three environments: aquatic, semi-aquatic and terrestrial. The following topics are discussed: transmission from host to host, which involves transmission of free-living stage of miracidium and cercaria: in active transmission – specific responses to environmental signals showing the presence of potential hosts (several papers of Haas et al.); in passive transmission – trophic transmission and mimicry by way of resemblance to natural food of potential host; and finally, transmission of the parasitic larvae (metacercaria and mesocercaria) – trophic transmission, manipulation of host behavior, and incorporating the intermediate host into food web of definitive host. This review also highlights several types of behavioral manipulations, including compensatory processes (Poulin, Lefèvre et al., Thomas et al.), and other mechanisms of manipulation (de Jong-Bring et. al). State-dependent alternative cycles demonstrating the difference between the terms „life cycle” and „life history” (Poulin, Thomas et al.) and the concept of „shared phenotype” (Lefèvre et al.) are also discussed.

Opis:
Costs calculation based on life cycle phases has a multinational roots reaching second decade last century. The literature review reveals a multitude of approaches to this issue that results in large number of cost estimation models and scope of their applications. In this paper is discussed the integration possibility of environmental Life Cycle Costing (e-LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It is recommended that this tools can be used parallel, however this approach raises still some concerns, especially in context of methodological consistency. In connection with the above, an attempt has been made to systemise the current knowledge on environmental and economic aspects integration that is based on concept of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) and to analyze the main LCA methodological steps in context of its correlation with Life Cycle Costing.

W poszukiwaniu znaczenia życia ludzkiego i odpowiedzi na pytania o życie w ogóle ważną, adekwatną i uniwersalną odpowiedź formułuje koncepcja Ewangelii życia Karola Wojtyły – Jana Pawła II.
Natural sciences do not find a sufficient answer to questions about the phenomenon (peculiarity) of life in general and its meaning, the meaning of human life. Can these questions be answered from the point of view of a human being, who is either an observer of life from the outside or a conscious participant in life? What do theology and theological anthropology have to say in these matters, especially in the context of the creation and redemption of the human person? In search of the meaning of human life and in response to questions about life in general, an important, adequate and universal answer is formulated by the concept of the Gospel of Life by Karol Wojtyła– John Paul II. The essence of this concept is contained in the encyclical “Evangelium vitae” (“The Gospel of Life”) under the same title. In the lecture of the encyclical on life that comes from God, is given to man from God and directs man to live in God, we find, above all, the meaning of human life. In the transition from the biology and metaphysics of life to spiritual features of the Gospel (“Good News”) of human life, which is unique, inviolable and extraordinary, John Paul II allows us to discover the meaning of life of every being, species and form of life on Earth. These issues are also present in his  encyclical “Evangelium Vitae”.

The paper presents cases, found in Polish academic life, of exceptional and moving violations of moral standards bound with the ideal of a scholar. These cases were made public by actors themselves (Wincenty Lutoslawski, Eugeniusz Romer), uncompromising historians (Henryk Barycz, Stanislaw Pigon) or widely known decision-makers (Rev. Bronislaw Zongollowicz). They argued that the ethics of scholars has not only normative character, but also a descriptive one, in many cases different that normative decisions. So conceived normative ethics should encompass the intimate life, particularly if it were made public due to a scandal. Such a scandal should call not condemnation, but intellectual reflection.

By now, neither socialist planned economy, nor market economy, nor the noble public environmental movements have brought reliable instruments of managing ecological aspects of the quality of life. Perhaps, it would be helpful to try to use here the methods of the concept of total quality management, so popular in business management. The main aspects of the quality of life management deriving from quality management positions are: priority of consumer requirements, which in our case means that when evaluating any projects, human interests must be considered higher than any system interests; priority of quality, which means rejecting such alternative options as the “consumer society” concept and radically ecological one, and leads to considering life period expectancy as the main target index; managing processes, not product specific- quality; involvement of all the personnel of organization (the whole population); huge role of continuous training; formalization of input and output control, including standardization and certification procedures.

In life course studies five principles guide social science researchers: (1) the principle of human development and aging, (2) the principle of human agency, (3) the principle of historical time and space, (4) the principle of timing, and (5) the principle of linked lives. We propose a sixth principle: life course tempo explicitly depends on other life course principles especially the external principles of (2), (3), and (5). Tempo changes may have sociological and psychological consequences. To demonstrate the sixth principle at work, we analyze a sample of the peasant letters both to and from America in Thomas and Znaniecki’s The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, the pioneer life history study of Polish immigrants in early 20th century. Two types of tempo change in transition into first marriage are evident in the letters, waiting/postponement and haste, which resulted from changed historical time and space and reorganized human agency of the immigrants. Thus, this research is inspired by Thomas and Znaniecki’s work on the Polish peasant and Znaniecki’s methodology and in turn uses the Polish peasant letters as data.

Biology is the most extensive field in the Corpus Aristotelicum. In his fundamental work De anima, Aristotle tries to fix the borders of this life science. The term ψυχή has a twofold explanatory status. On the one hand, ψυχή is understood as a principle of all living beings. On the other hand, it is understood as a cause of the fact that all living beings are alive. The paper is divided into three sections. (1) The first part shows why Aristotle discusses these issues in a work entitled Περὶ ψυχῆς. Since Pythagoras and Heraclitus, ψυχή was understood as a life principle: Pythagoras believed that men, animals and plants share the same nature: they are all ἔμψυχα and they are homogenous qua ψυχή. (2) The second part of this article deals with Aristotle’s definition of the soul in DA II: ψυχή is the principle of all living things. This establishes (i) the external criteria to divide living and non-living beings and (ii) the internal criteria to divide living beings. (3) The third part of this paper is concerned with the methodological consequences of this definition: the life functions (δυνάμεις τῆς ψυχῆς) are the central explanandum in Aristotle’s biology. De anima II defines such various life-functions as nourishment, sense-perception and locomotion. These capacities contour the main fields of the philosopher’s biological investigation. For Aristotle, the faculty of reproduction is a subtype of nourishment. Reproduction is the most important and most natural function of all living beings. Genetics is, therefore, the most important field in Aristotle’s biology.

The life quality results from the degree of needs satisfaction, what comes among other from goods and services consumption. The aim of the work is to widespread the outcomes from author’s research attempting to find the determinants of the life quality, using more advanced statistical methods. These methods, on the base of individual distributions and at assumption that ordinal scale is treated as a ratio scale, may widen the analyses of sources conditioning the life quality. With various degree of details, there were presented the results of the life quality statistical modelling. Particular emphasis on usefulness of logit regression model and the use of cumulative probability was applied. Statistical data were drawn from realization of three research projects funded by National Science Centre in 2011-2015.

Opis:
This paper presents a study on the significance of adolescent’s value system in creating concept about their own life in the process of planning their own future. A hypothetical model of this concept is analysed, which identifies such main components as: preferred life style, life goals and plans, and decisions concerning their own future. This model acknowledges values as the main criterion in creating this concept as they form the base for defining a person’s preferred life style, their formulation of life goals and plans and the undertaking of important decisions concerning their future (Czerwińska-Jasiewicz, 2005). The propounded author’s own model of adolescents’ concepts about their own future has been based on the notion of J. Piaget (Inhelder, Piaget, 1970), concerning adolescents creating a “programme” of their own life, as a specific developmental task during adolescence. The statement that the “programme" of adolescents’ own lives is based on a given value scale on which certain ideals and goals can be placed above others seems particularly significant in this concept. The discussion presented herein is based on the above statement. The creation by me of the above model was further inspired by the theoretical concepts and the research programmes concerning the future orientation of adolescents, their goals and life plans and values (Nuttin, 1980; Niemczyński, 1980, 1988; Nurmi, 1991; Matusewicz, 1975; Mądrzycki, 1996; Zaleski, 1991; Trempała, 1996, 2000).

Opis:
W świecie współczesnym do większych zagrożeń ludzkiego życia należą aborcja i eutanazja.
It shall be stated in the article that human life is the greatest value and the state should protect the respect for this value. The right to life is the basis of all other rights, values and disrespect for it effects in nonobservance of the others. That is why the right to life is guaranteed from birth to death by numerous international law systems of human life protection. Both abortion and euthanasia gather supporters and opponents. The Catholic Church headed by the Holy Father is a resolute opponent of both those procedures. Public opinion is divided in judgment of acceptability of abortion. Legalization of abortion leads to negation of principal rule, emphasizing human life as the greatest value which is protected at all costs. Many contemporary women believe that removal of the baby is the right belonging to them because a conceived child is a part of their body and they wish to decide about it independently. Changing women mentality, who often give priority to career over establishing a family, is another threat. Euthanasia as the revocation of the right to life becomes a threat for many senior people. Putting to death because of pity and compassion becomes popular and widespread. An assurance of sense of security and care should be the family task, however more and more frequently life of the members depends on the family. Children decide to carry out the euthanasia on their parents for different reasons.

Opis:
The article is a review paper on the issue of life satisfaction in seniors. Nowadays, it is very difficult for the elderly to achieve an optimum level of life satisfaction due to the changing reality and their difficulty adapting to it, changes in their functioning resulting from the aging process, abandonment by their families, poor social and living conditions or lack of proper medical care. These factors inspire reflection on the actual state of the sense of life satisfaction in seniors. The aim of the article is to explain the concept of life satisfaction, describe the notions related to it along with similarities and differences in meaning between them, investigate and interpret contemporary theories of life satisfaction, and show the diversity of methodological approaches and relationality in conducting research on life satisfaction in seniors. The idea is also to highlight the importance of research on life satisfaction in elderly people and to develop a senior citizen policy. Data collection was based on the method of content analysis of scientific research studies in the field of social sciences.

Opis:
Growth pattern and lifestyle habits of the Triassic non−mammalian cynodont Trirachodon are deduced from bone histology and cross−sectional geometry. Several skeletal elements of Trirachodon were examined in order to document histological changes during ontogeny, as well as histovariability in the skeleton. The bone histology of all the elements consists of a moderately vascularized, periodically interrupted, fibro−lamellar bone tissue. This suggests that the overall growth of Trirachodon was probably rapid during the favourable season, but decreased or ceased during the unfavourable season. As the environment is thought to have been semi−arid with seasonal rainfall, it is possible that Trirachodon was sensitive to such environmental fluctuations. Some inter−elemental histovariability was noted where the number and prominence of growth rings varied. Limb bone cross−sectional geometry revealed a relatively thick bone wall and supports earlier proposals that Trirachodon was fossorial.

Opis:
Epicurus’ philosophy grew out of his life experiences, contacts, polemics, journeys and other activities. Apart from such great works as the monumental On nature (Peri phuseôs) in 37 books, Epicurus authored also various extracts (epitomai), principle doctrines, sayings and letters. The letters, while addressed to many students and friends, were for him a very important tool of propagating his own philosophy. Epicurus’ fascinating Letter to Menoeceus can be regarded as a manifesto of his philosophy of life. In historiography, it is often characterized as an exposition of his ethics, even though Epicurus probably did not use the term himself. To better capture the composition and spirit of this work, the Greek text of the letter has been somewhat rearranged here: for the sake of clarity, ample spaces and special paragraphs have been provided, and appropriate headings have been introduced in the Polish translation.

Opis:
The term used in the title has not so far been the subject of a more extensive linguistic reflection. The author of the paper aims at providing a disciplined description of lexical units containing the segment żyć with respect to their structure and meaning. The method of analysis is based on putting forward hypotheses in the form of analytical implications and subjecting them to falsification by bringing them down to contradiction. The content of the paper focuses on issues relating to reconstruction of the form of lexical units (on the basis of segment and supra-segment signals) and reconstruction of the hierarchy of meaningful components. In close relationship with the content of the analysed terms, also the notions wiedzieć ('to know') and robić ('to do/make') are discussed. The author tries to prove that those components belong to the semantic structure of the examined phrase; he also proposes a preliminary explication of meanings in the terms of natural semantic meta-language.

Opis:
Introduction: Cancer treatment is multidisciplinary in its character and places a heavy burden on the patient. Quality of life is a concept that is closely related to the satisfaction with life. Cancer patients’ satisfaction with life, especially after recovery, is an increasingly examined indicator of treatment quality. Aim of the study: Evaluation of satisfaction with life in patients after radical cancer treatment. Material and methods: The study included 100 people, 81 women and 19 men of all ages, following radical treatment of various cancers. The study was conducted in 2016 at the Centre of Oncology in Bydgoszcz. The study used the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), adapted by Z. Juczyński, as well as a sociodemographic data questionnaire. Results: In general, cancer patients have an average level of satisfaction with life – the average score was 22.37 and 6.19 sten. The greatest satisfaction with life (average points) was reported for professionally active people – 22.67, patients between 41–50 years old – 23.5, patients with secondary education – 23.4, and patients with at least one child – 22.73, though the differences were not statistically significant. Additionally, patients 3–5 years after treatment declared a higher satisfaction with life – 23.05, as did patients without concomitant diseases – 22.77, though again the results were statistically non-significant. Conclusions: In general, patients after radical anti-cancer treatment have an average satisfaction with life, and in half of them satisfaction with life is high, regardless of the duration and type of cancer. Sociodemographic factors have no impact on the satisfaction with life scores.

Opis:
John Paul II could be rightly called the ‘Admirer of life’. His deep faith, along with the existential reasons, the sources of which could be traced back to his traumatic experiences during the Second World War, moulded him into a strong defender of human life. The Pope teaches that a civilization’s worth is determined by its attitude towards human life; it is either the civilization of life, or the destructive civilization of death. Since body constitutes an integral part of the whole human person, its dignity is enhanced. In his ‘theology of the body’ John Paul II stressed not only the sharing of the body in the dignity of the person, but also its importance as a sign and a needle in the compass of the human intellect in its search for moral norms. The Polish Pope insisted on the value of human life from its inception to natural death, and often presented various ruling elites with a challenge: Life is sacrosanct and this truth must be reflected in legislation. Human life is, according to John Paul II, the penultimate things; life is limited, mortal. The value of human life is determined by its destination: the human being is to find his fulfillment in eternity, where he will have a share in the everlasting life. Thirty years after the elevation of Karol Wojtyla to the Holy See we may confidently give him the credit for influencing the change in sensitivity to human life on a truly global scale. Though the contrary tendencies are very strong, thanks to the Polish Pope the impact of the culture of death has been significantly restricted.

The aim of the article is the subjective evaluation of health, quality of life and resourcefulness of life by elderly people in respect to age, gender, and education, place of living and material situation. The study was conducted in 2010 on the areas of small and large districts in Świętokrzyskie and Mazowieckie Provinces. It comprised 186 people over the age of 60, including 106 women and 80 men who were divided into three age groups: 60-69 years of age, 70-79 years of age and 80+. The respondents were characterized by a relatively positive evaluation of their health and resourcefulness of life, whereas the quality of life clearly deteriorated with age, both in the women and men over the age of 60. The women assessed the quality of their life worse, what may relate to longer life rate and loneliness. Resourcefulness of life and satisfaction with life also significantly deteriorated with age and the factor which influenced the resourcefulness of life was mainly age.
Celem pracy jest ocena zdrowia subiektywnego, jakości życia i zaradności życiowej osób starszych w odniesieniu do wieku, płci, poziomu wykształcenia, miejsce zamieszkania i sytuacji materialnej.

Opis:
A growing ecological awareness in modern societies, legal regulations aiming at a reduction of waste storage and economic benefits that we can have from recycling of used products led to a situation that the creation of recycling networks has become an important issue, particularly in developed countries. The paper presents issues related to the design of recycling network whose purpose is to collect from the last owner, dismantle and properly recover end-of-life vehicles. In order to fulfil the ecological requirements and also efficient management of the whole recovery process, the conceptual framework of a reverse logistics network is presented. The collecting of vehicles, dismantling and following processes of shredding and treatment in material recycling facilities are considered jointly. Then a mathematical model is developed which minimizes the costs of setting up the network and also the relevant transportation costs. Because of the complexity of the model, a solution methodology based on the evolutionary algorithm is proposed which enables achieving good quality solutions in a reasonable algorithm run time. In particular, the participants and the flows in the recycling network and visualisation of the results for flows between dismantlers and plastic recycling facilities are presented in the paper.
