Opis:
Rapid development in the high-power laser technology poses new requirements on the thermal protective materials. Military laser applications have been characterized and the examples have been presented. Existing materials, which may be used as a protection against high-energy laser beam, have been discussed. Several concepts of the new thermal barrier materials have been proposed. The proposals include multilayer structures, porous materials, systems with phase change materials (PCMs), and systems with various thermal contact resistance for different contact pairs. Comparative study based on numerical simulation results has been performed to assess efficiency of each proposal. Three major candidate technologies were considered: the CO2 laser, the HF/DF chemical laser, and the Nd-glass solid-state laser. The CO2 combustion driven gas laser was built in mid-seventies. Its power was 500 kW with the poor beam quality. In the context of thermal protection against laser, high conductive material component in a complex structure might be especially useful, since irradiated surface is usually limited to a small size.

Opis:
Coherent laser irradiation of amorphous carbon films formed on Si substrates by ion beam deposition from pure acetylene and acetylene/hydrogen gas mixture is analyzed in this work. The films were irradiated with nanosecond YAG:Nd laser (Ekspla NL301G) at the first (1064 nm, 6 ns), the second (532 nm, 4.2 ns) and the third (355 nm, 28 ns) harmonic by scanning or repeating (10 pulses to one point) regime. Irradiation by the first laser harmonic leads to a minor increase of graphite phase content and shows SiC formation. Formation of carbides was observed at the second harmonic irradiation when irradiation intensity is low (< 10 MW/$cm^2$). Graphitization became more intensive when power density of irradiation increased and the films transformed to the glass carbon and nano/micro crystallite compound at intensive ablation regime ( ≈ 24 MW/$cm^2$). Early ablation starts at irradiation by the third laser harmonic with the intensity of ≈ 8 MW/$cm^2$ with an increase of Si substrate roughness. Swelling of films was obtained when the sample was irradiated at the third harmonic with 1 MW/$cm^2$.

Opis:
It is important to know the temperature changes in seeds that have been irradiated with laser light because this could have substantial practical and theoretical importance. Thus, the thermal effects of low intensity laser irradiation on seeds was studied, showing variation of temperature produced by laser light applied during 60 s on two maize seed genotypes, ‘Toluqueño’ and ‘Cacahuazintle’: crystalline and floury, respectively, under two different conditions: natural colour and dyed black, evaluating the temperature changes by a thermal camera. The optical absorption spectra and the non-radiative relaxation time of the seeds were obtained using photoacoustic spectroscopy. The results indicate that it is possible to produce temperature changes, detected by an infrared camera, in crystalline and floury seeds when theyare irradiated with a laser beam at a 650 nm wavelength and27.4 mW power. The highest variation of temperature in the seeds was obtained for the black-dyed condition, these variations being 5.56 and 9.28°C for crystalline and floury seeds, respectively. Among the seeds, in the dyed condition, the floury seed had the lower non-radiative relaxation time, the higher optical absorption coefficient and a lower optical penetration length at the laser wavelength (650 nm).

Opis:
The goal of this study is to estimate the effects of low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) on the superovulatory response according to the number of corpora lutea (CL), follicles (F) and the embryo yield. In recent years, while searching for new, more efficient and organic methods to improve superovulatory response and embryo yield with respect to the conventional methods, low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) is a more sensitive and less costly technology that can be used to improve animal reproduction, namely, artificial insemination and the embryo production system. The dairy-cow donors were treated for superovulation with PlusetR, at any time during the oestrus cycle, and the total dose per donor was 700 IU. The first group of the donors (n=25), test group (TG), was irradiated on the sacroiliac area for 180 seconds per day, from the 1st to 11th superovulatory treatment (ST) days in a row, with LLLI in the 870-970-nm wavelength, 65.93 J/cm dose, frequencies in the 20-2000 Hz range and pulse durations commonly in the range of about 1 second. For the second control group (CG) (n=25), the ST was performed without LLLI. After the ST, The mean number of CL in the right side ovaries in the TG was 25.43% (p<0.05) greater than in those of the CG. The number of total recovered and transferable embryos was greater in the TG compared with the CG by 28.97% (p<0.05) and 15.8% (p>0.05), respectively. With respect to conventional methods, LLLI can be used to improve the superovulatory response and embryo yield as a supplementary environment and animal-friendly method of treatment.

Opis:
Amorphous hydrogenated carbon films were formed on the Si (100) wafers by a direct-ion beam deposition method from pure acetylene and acetylene-hydrogen gas mixtures. The films were irradiated with a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser working at the first harmonics ($λ_1$=1064 nm), the fourth harmonics ($λ_4$=266 nm) or with a $Nd:YVO_4$ laser working at the third harmonic ($λ_3$=355 nm). The films were studied by the Raman scattering, micro-Fourier transform infrared and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies, null-ellipsometry, optical and scanning electron microscope, and Vickers hardness method. Irradiation by the wavelength $λ_1$=1064 nm leads to graphitization and formation of the silicon carbide, because of the silicon substrate decomposition. The samples were strongly modified after the irradiation by $λ_3$=355 nm - the thickness of the films decreased, and silicon carbide was formed. It was observed that nano-structured materials (e.g. carbon nano-onions, nc-diamond) were formed after the irradiation by $λ_4$=266 nm.

Opis:
The numerical analysis of thermal damage process proceeding in biological tissue during laser irradiation is presented. Heat transfer in the tissue is assumed to be transient and two-dimensional. The internal heat source resulting from the laser irradiation based on the solution of the diffusion equation is taken into account. The tissue is regarded as a homogeneous domain with perfusion coefficient and effective scattering coefficient treated as dependent on tissue injury. At the stage of numerical realization, the boundary element method and the finite difference method have been used. In the final part of the paper the results of computations are shown.

Self-organizing nanometer size structures are observed on the surface of CdZnTe crystal irradiated by strongly absorbed Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LR) at intensity range of 4-12 MW/cm2. According to this model the Thermogradient effect has the main role in the interaction process of LR and semiconductors. The surface state of the CdZnTe under the influence of Nd:YAG laser irradiation has been studied. A state has been defined by atom force microscope. The influence of LR on the photoluminescence spectrahas show that at a threshold intensity of LR I=4 MW/cm2 creation of nanometer size structure begins. A graded band gap structure with optical window was formed at the top of nano-hills.

Opis:
Alloy nanoparticles due to their possibility of regulation, the region of absorption peak and consequently their optical and electrical properties, have a specific significance. In this research, nanosecond laser pulses of Nd:YAG laser with 532 nm wavelength that is close to absorption peak of gold and zinc nanoparticles, were used for synthesis of alloy. Atomic absorption spectrum UV-Visible, X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy images were utilized for characterization as well. For synthesis of Au-Zn alloy nanoparticles, zinc and gold nanoparticles were prepared separately by laser ablation method and then the mixture of their colloidal solutions with specified ratio was exposed to laser radiation. Thereby, gold and zinc nanoparticles were combined by absorbing of laser beam and gaining of required energy for melting, and Au-Zn alloy nanoparticles were formed. Wavelength of 532 nm is more effective in the formation of alloy than 1064 nm because of being close to wavelength of surface plasmon resonance of gold and zinc nanoparticles. Increase of concentration of gold nanoparticles compared to zinc nanoparticles in the mixed solution causes that gold nanoparticles absorb the most of the energy of laser and then larger gold particles are created, so alloy nanoparticles are not formed. The best time duration for irradiation and accomplishment of alloy formation is 30 min.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomena that occur in biological tissueduring photodynamic therapy (PDT). Under the influence of the laser, triplet oxygen istransformed into singlet oxygen, which is cytotoxic to cancer tissue. The impact of thelaser on the tissue may also be accompanied by changes in the thermophysical parameters,e.g., perfusion, which can affect the supply of oxygen to the tissue and, consequently, the outcome of the therapy. The proposed model uses the optical diffusion equation, the Pennes bioheat transfer equation, and reactions equations for PDT. The connectionbetween bioheat transfer and PDT models is taken into account through the respectiverelationships between perfusion rate, capillary blood velocity, and the maximum oxygensupply rate. Furthermore, a method is proposed to model abnormal vascular patterns inthe tumor subdomain. The boundary element method and the finite difference methodwere used in the numerical implementation stage.

The influence of UV laser irradiation on the physical properties of epitaxial YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ thin (<1μm) films fabricated by laser ablation was studied. The samples were irradiated by pulsed excimer laser beam at different incident energy densities E$\text{}_{ir}$≤130 mJ/cm$\text{}^{2}$, i.e. 2-3 times below the ablation threshold of YBaCuO. The analysis of the sample cross-section using transmission electron microscope shows that such irradiation forms a disordered layer on the top of the crystalline film. Sample surface amorphization was observed also by atomic force microscope. Due to strong UV irradiation absorption in YBaCuO this surface layer acts like a protective cover for the sample interior. Only a small reduction of superconducting critical temperature T$\text{}_{c}$ was observed. Both transport measurements in normal state and magneto-optical studies in superconducting state indicate that between the disordered layer and the bottom non-modified part of the film there exists a wide transitional region with reduced carrier concentration.
