Opis:
The present study aims to develop a test protocol based on the literature for electrochemical characterisation of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis commercial stack using polarisation curves. For this, a 1-kW water electrolysis test stand with integrated temperature control and measurement systems was built around the stack. Afterwards, the stack performance was characterised under different operating pressure and temperature conditions by using polarisation curves. A measurement protocol was developed based on the literature. To ensure the reproducibility of the results, two rounds of experiments were performed. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 20 and 60 °C and pressures up to 15 bar. The results show distinct regions in the polarisation curves related to the activation and ohmic overvoltage. The effect of temperature and pressure on the performance is shown and analysed. The performance of single cells in the stack is also measured. The stack polarisation curves are compared with those in the literature, which gives an understanding of the materials used in electrodes and types of membranes.

This paper deals with the issue of isotropic heat conduction in thermomechanical largestrain problems. The aim of the paper is a comparison of different variants of Fourier’s law used in the literature for a large strain problem. In particular, Fourier’s law is specified either in the reference or in the deformed configuration by using different options of heat flux density vectors which are presented and discussed. The paper includes working examples to illustrate the presented theory. Moreover, different formulations of Fourier’s law are tested by using the finite element method to investigate the influence of the applied variant on simulation results. The analysis reveals that in a strongly deformed area the temperature distribution varies.

What makes up a good problem? We will not attempt to give a complete answer to that question. A partial answer is that, for engineering education, it is desirable if a problem in some sense is practical. It should, if possible, relate to the students’ previous experience, connect to applications that the student knows or is about to learn about. Such experienced relevance of the problem might be the spark that inspires an otherwise marginally motivated learner. When selecting problems for this booklet, we have chosen such ones that in our experience have served us well. Several of them have been developed and revised in collaboration with students and learning assistants and have been tried out in courses at our respective institutions. Even though intended learning objectives may be common, the actual syllabus and course construction must always be adapted to local culture, tradition and administrative requirements. A reader may find that some of our suggestions fit well with his or her own way of teaching, others not.

Objectives It has been shown that monitoring temporary threshold shift (TTS) after exposure to noise may have a predictive value for susceptibility of developing permanent noise-induced hearing loss. The aim of this study is to present the assumptions of the TTS predictive model after its verification in normal hearing subjects along with demonstrating the usage of this model for the purposes of public health policy. Material and Methods The existing computational predictive TTS models were adapted and validated in a group of 18 bartenders exposed to noise at the workplace. The performance of adapted TTS predictive model was assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The demonstration example of the usage of this model for estimating the risk of TTS in general unscreened population after exposure to loud music in discotheque bars or music clubs is provided. Results The adapted TTS predictive model shows a satisfactory agreement in distributions of actual and predicted TTS values and good correlations between these values in examined bartenders measured at 4 kHz, and as a mean at speech frequencies (0.5–4 kHz). An optimal cut-off level for recognizing the TTS events, ca. 75% of young people (aged ca. 35 years) may experience TTS >5 dB, while <10% may exhibit TTS of 15–18 dB. Conclusions The final TTS predictive model proposed in this study needs to be validated in larger groups of subjects exposed to noise. Actual prediction of TTS episodes in general populations may become a helpful tool in creating the hearing protection public health policy. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2023;36(1):125–38

It is often assumed that the concept of alētheia, or ‘truth’, in Gorgias of Leontini belongs to the art of rhetoric. Along these lines, it is usually understood as an aesthetic concept or even a mere ‘adornment’ of speech. In this paper, it is argued, by contrast, that Gorgianic alētheia is a definable criterion of speech figuring in the practice of moral education. While the ‘truth’ of a logos indeed has to be assessed on aesthetic grounds, the underlying concept of alētheia is predominantly ethical. For Gorgias, speech is ‘true’ when it promotes virtue (aretē) by being expressive of virtue. The principle stated in the opening passage of the Encomium of Helen, that a speaker has ‘to praise what is praiseworthy and to blame what is blameworthy’, explains precisely this understanding of alētheia.

Opis:
The current article describes the basics and prospects of the ultrasound-assisted cleaning of shell and tube heat exchangers that are used, e.g., on ships. A main issue of seawater heat exchangers is their clogging. After a certain operating time, the fouling process (barnacles, algae, etc.) starts, which results in a decreased performance that produces a noticeably reduced flow rate and a declining transmission of heat energy. Based on the current state of the art, heat exchangers are cleaned by mechanical or chemical (CIP, cleaning in place) methods. Especially on ship-based systems, a mechanical cleaning in very narrow spaces can be difficult and the usage of chemicals for CIP may generally be prohibited. An ultrasound-assisted cleaning would significantly save time and manning. Based on previous experiments, a test reactor represented by a shell and tube heat exchanger with ultrasound-assisted cleaning has been designed. A FEM (finite element method) simulation is performed to provide information about the ultrasound power distribution inside the reactor. Further, the assembly and commissioning of the test reactor with associated comparative measurements were carried out, which are also reported here.

The use of fibre-reinforced plastic composites (FRP) for lightweight construction solutions is becoming increasingly important. The processing of 2D scrims into complete 3D FRP components has been carried out with the help of complex manual assembly steps. The disadvantages of this procedure are distortions in the textile and, thus, deviations in the fibre alignments from the calculated load path. This paper presents a newly developed basic technology for the production of 3D reinforcing grids with variable warp and weft yarn section lengths based on multiaxial warp knitting technology. For this purpose, a new type of machine module and associated control technology for the production of weft yarn reserves on a multiaxial warp knitting machine was developed. In combination with technology from previous research work on the production of warp yarn lengths suitable for component contours, a basis was created for the production of 3D reinforcing grids.

Opis:
Researchers address the generalization problem of deep image processing networks mainly through extensive use of data augmentation techniques such as random flips, rotations, and deformations. A data augmentation technique called mixup, which constructs virtual training samples from convex combinations of inputs, was recently proposed for deep classification networks. The algorithm contributed to increased performance on classification in a variety of datasets, but so far has not been evaluated for image segmentation tasks. In this paper, we tested whether the mixup algorithm can improve the generalization performance of deep segmentation networks for medical image data. We trained a standard U-net architecture to segment the prostate in 100 T2-weighted 3D magnetic resonance images from prostate cancer patients, and compared the results with and without mixup in terms of Dice similarity coefficient and mean surface distance from a reference segmentation made by an experienced radiologist. Our results suggest that mixup offers a statistically significant boost in performance compared to non-mixup training, leading to up to 1.9% increase in Dice and a 10.9% decrease in surface distance. The mixup algorithm may thus offer an important aid for medical image segmentation applications, which are typically limited by severe data scarcity.

Lean management is an approach to continuous process optimisation. The methodology involves the entire value chain. The individual links are made more efficient and thus leaner. The main goal of lean management is to use various lean methods, procedures and thinking principles to coordinate all processes and activities in such a way that any kind of waste along the value chain is avoided in a holistic production system. This would result in the following main difficulties: Transporting information quickly and purposefully to the right places in the company. This is where the lean tool of shopfloor Management (SFM) comes into its own. The shopfloor board is the communication platform of SFM. Shopfloor takes place very close to the employees in a direct interaction between employees and managers. Staff are directly involved in the process and should and can contribute their own approaches to solutions. The article provides an overview of the structure of shopfloor management (SFM) and proves that the goals set by the introduction itself – namely the optimised flow of information in the company with the involvement of all employees – are achieved through shopfloor Management. The method of a structured interview with 63 respondents is used to obtain data.

Small wind turbines are mostly designed for strong and medium wind regions, which are scaled by manufacturers based on similarity rules. However, the inland region represents a low wind region where the commercially available blades are not profitable. In this work, a rotor blade was designed for these wind conditions and further performance improvement of the turbine was generated by self-adaptive adjustment of the blades to the variable wind loads. This adaptation is achieved by a ply structure that exhibits bending-torsion coupling. The tooling for the production of the GFRP rotor blades was manufactured using a large-format 3D extrusion printer.

Background: Software plays an essential role in enabling digital transformation via digital services added to traditional products or fully digital business offerings. This calls for a better understanding of the relationships between the dynamic nature of business models and their realization using software engineering practices. Aim: In this paper, we synthesize the implications of digitalization on business model flexibility for software-intensive companies based on an extensive literature survey and a longitudinal case study at Ericsson AB. We analyze how software-intensive companies can better synchronize business model changes with software development processes and organizations. Method: We synthesize six propositions based on the literature review and extensive industrial experience with a large software-intensive company working in the telecommunication domain. Conclusions: Our work is designed to facilitate the cross-disciplinary analysis of business model dynamics and business model flexibility by linking value, transaction, and organizational learning to business model change. We believe that software engineering tools and methods can play a crucial role in enabling more automated synchronization between technology and business model changes.

A set of 17 hybrid aspen clones were studied at age four in 11 field trials (series 1) and a set of 12 clones were studied at age 12 in three field trials (series 2) in Sweden, Finland and north-west Russia. There was an intermediate and significant correlation between height ranks at four and 12 years, showing modest G × E interaction for tree height. The corresponding correlation for survival was weak and insignificant, indicating a stronger G × E interaction than for height. The stability parameter (S) for height showed large differences among clones. The plasticity index (PI) values for height ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 among clones, demonstrating high levels of phenotypic plasticity.

Opis:
This paper aims to describe the Swedish Rehn-Meidner model, the cause of its creation, its features and the reasons for changes in the Swedish economic policy over several decades. The model was developed by two Swedish economists in 1951 and it impacted the economic policy over the following decades. It was intended to facilitate achieving the goals of full employment, price stability, economic growth and equality in a redistribution of income through the policies of solidarity wage, restrictive economy, active labour market and marginal employment. The model was designed as a solution to the "overheating" of the Swedish economy in the 1950s. The implementation of the model initially proved to be successful. However, in the 1970s the economic policy began to be more influenced by trade unions, acting mainly in their own interest. Due to the growing globalisation other external factors, such as oil crises and negative demand shocks, started to have an increasing impact on Sweden. It was when economic decisions started to shift away from the recommendations of the model, and the "golden age" of the 1950s and 1960s came to an end. The following analysis intends to explain what was the model characterisation, how it influenced Sweden's development, and why the country economic policy has changed over time. It also states that despite changes in the economy, certain elements of the model have remained valid until today.
Miał on ułatwić osiągnięcie celów pełnego zatrudnienia, stabilności cen, wzrostu gospodarczego i równości w redystrybucji dochodów poprzez politykę – solidarną płacową, restrykcyjną gospodarczą, aktywną na rynku pracy i marginalną w odniesieniu do zatrudnienia.
