    The article attempts to portray transformations of the research on the idiolect in Polish linguistic studies of the last two centuries. In this research some distinct tendencies can be observed: inscreasing number of works devoted to different idiolects, widening circle of described individuals, as well as new theoretical approaches to the problem, closely related to main paradigms of contemporary linguistics: above all the concept of the idiolect as an individual communication competence or as a structure containing the individual worldview. The evolution of understanding the idiolect is still involving new phenomena considered as idiolect components into the field of research. Some linguistic currents regard the idiolect as more primal than the common language, which is treated as the overlap of many idiolects. Because of all these the research on idiolects are clearly put forward from margins of linguistics towards its centre. It seems there are new currents and linguistic disciplines that influence discovering the value of the idiolect as an object of linguistics. Focusing on the idiolect results also from tendencies present in other disciplines as well as from the individualistic aspect of the contemporary culture.

    Opis:
    In the article, the issue of teaching the foreign language to adult learners has been raised. The author presented a set of components allowing to conduct individual foreign language classes with a business client effectively. Special attention has been paid to non-linguistic elements of a didactic unit which allow to diversify the classes and which introduce friendly atmosphere that simplifies the memorization of the material. The opinion has been stated that the key to effective teaching and educational success is the attitude of the teacher who builds a creative and dynamic team together with the student. As a conclusion, the author presented a few rules of good classes in the company.

    This article deals with glottodidactic processes, seen on a level that goes beyond purely didactic-linguistic issues, that is, a level that considers their more specialized forms and that is a domain of other academic fields. The subject of the article is metaglottodidactic information concerning processes of decoding, processing, storing, and encoding language structures while learning and acquiring them.     The article discusses selected problems of learning and using English as an academic language from the perspective of foreign students in Poland. The theoretical part of the paper concentrates on the issues related to the concept of identity and the status of English as an academic lingua franca, especially in the light of the growing role of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in university education. Such theoretical background is intended to serve as a kind of introduction to the discussion which centres around the influence of this specific social variation of the English language on the process of shaping or reshaping identities among students who have decided to continue their education outside their native language environment in the multilingual context of a university language department. Seen from such a perspective, university courses in EAP may be treated as a form of practical implementation of multilingual pedagogy and, more specifically, the idea of inclusive “classrooms” with a particular goal-oriented curriculum. The empirical part of the article presents the research project which aimed to examine the above-mentioned phenomena as experienced by a group of language students of different ethnic and national background who have been studying (and living) in Poland for at least a year. The main research technique used in this qualitative study was the semi-structured interview, selected with a view to obtaining an in-depth picture and highly personalised account of the process of (re)constructing individual identities in a specific social context and educational setting.

    System językowy rozwija się od chwili narodzin dziecka. W przypadku całościowych zaburzeń rozwojowych może być stymulowany poprzez interwencję budującą system lub wspomagającą budowanie i strukturę systemu językowego. Interwencja włączająca komunikację alternatywną i wspomagającą ma każdorazowo prowadzić do tworzenia przez użytkownika nigdy wcześniej nieformowanych wypowiedzi. Aby uzyskać ten cel, należy wybrać Wspomaganą Stymulację Języka (ang. Aided Language Stimulation), która umożliwi trenowanie różnych wypowiedzeń w zależności od wyraźnych potrzeb i możliwości w konkretnej funkcjonalnej sytuacji, zarówno podczas aktywności zaplanowanych, jak i spontanicznych. Stąd pojawienie się „dzienników” jako dodatkowych działań wspierających rozwój umiejętności, które zdobywane są w trakcie normatywnego rozwoju bez większego trudu, a muszą być wspomagane w przypadku osób z całościowymi potrzebami komunikacyjnymi (ang. CCN Complex Communication Needs). Oprócz samej funkcji komunikacyjnej, w której występuje indywidualna pomoc komunikacyjna, zastępując mowę, musimy wspierać usprawnianie i wzmacnianie kompetencji komunikacyjnych i językowych. Praca z dzieckiem z CCN wymaga tego, aby Indywidualna Pomoc Komunikacyjna (IPK) była wykorzystywana przez cały czas w trakcie wszystkich czynności i szła z nim w każde miejsce oraz przez każdego partnera komunikacyjnego i społecznego.
    The language system of a child starts to develop since the moment a child is born. In case of complex developmental disorders the language system may be stimulated through an intervention establishing the system or aiding development and structure of the language system. The intervention encompassing supporting and alternative communication should in each instance lead to the user developing previously not formed utterances. In order to reach this goal the Aided Language Stimulation should be selected which will enable training various utterances depending on the explicit and clear needs and capacities in a given functional situation - both during planned and spontaneous activities. Thus the emergence of writing journals as an additional task supporting development of skills which are acquired during the normative development without any greater effort and the acquisition of which must be aided in case of persons with Complex Communication Needs (CCN). Apart from the communication function which receives individual communication aid in supplanting speech we must also support improving and reinforcing communication and language competences. Working with a child with CCN requires Individual Communication Aid (ICA) to be present and in use at all times, during performing all tasks, to be provided everywhere and by each social and communication partner.

    Second language acquisition (SLA) researchers have long been engaged in investigating the effect of a range of learner individual differences (IDs, e.g., motivation, anxiety and aptitude) on L2 learning and achievement. At the same time, there are no more than a few studies focusing of on learner personality and its place in SLA and the relationship between personality traits and other ID variables. One such underappreciated and thus poorly recognized personality trait is grit, understood as a combination of perseverance and passion for long-term goals. The present paper reports a study in which grit was investigated among advanced university students majoring in English with the help of a language-specific grit scale and semi-structured interviews. The empirical considerations are preceded by a small number of theoretical comments on the nature of grit and related research that was conducted to date. The paper ends with the discussion of future research directions and possible pedagogical implications.

    The complex phenomenon of the multilingual competence, which cannot be viewed as the sum of competences in every single language known to the speaker, not only requires a detailed analysis of its different aspects but should also be the subject of learners’ reflection. The following paper examines the outcome of a questionnaire which was a part of an empirical pilot study made among Polish students of English Philology learning German as an additional language during the academic year 2013. It is aimed to show some complexities that characterize tertiary language acquisition (TLA) in the sequential constellation English as the first (L2) and German as the second foreign language (L3) and to find out how the state of being multilingual is perceived by the learners themselves referring to the role played by English in the acquisition of German, the kind of interaction between Polish, English and German in both production and reception taking place within different language subsystems as well as the influence of multilingualism on the shaping of metalinguistic awareness. Recent concepts of multilingual language acquisition and the outcome of research focused on cross-linguistic influence in a multilingual mind have been taken as the basis for examining the learners’ reflection.
