The last few decades, due to increasingly modern technological solutions, have brought about the possibility of more detailed and in-depth explorations of human brain functioning and its properties. In the first part of the present article, the characteristics of the object of research in linguistics are presented, and in the second, the possibilities of its exploration are described. Special attention was focused on the possibilities of using eye-tracking research in linguistics. Summing up the observations, it should be admitted that in order to make progress in linguistics and to be innovative, experimental research carried out using apparatus must be incorporated and started. However, it must be emphasized that this type of experimental research in linguistics, including obviously eye-tracking studies, is scientifically relevant only to the point that it really contributes to the creation of new knowledge or the verification of scientific knowledge gained earlier, and only if it contributes to the scientific exploration of the object of linguistics.

The study of language is shared by a number of fields, including linguistics, psychology, and neurobiology. While the methods employed by these domains may overlap, they differ in the focus of their scientific inquiry, and the unique perspective of each may inform investigation within the others. We conceptualize this relationship in the context of David Marr’s information processing theory, with neurobiology as the implementational level of language, and discuss the history of the neurobiology of language from early localizationist models to the present day. Decades of electrophysiological and anatomical studies of the macaque monkey support the existence of dual streams for the processing of auditory information. More recent neuroimaging studies suggest that these streams are also present in humans, subserving speech perception and language comprehension. The development of high resolution brain imaging methods and brain stimulation has advanced our ability to study, in vivo, the structures and processes underlying the language network. For those linguists interested in studying language with consideration of the system that implements it, theories and concepts may now be meaningfully informed by neurobiology.

W ramach podsumowania, autor dokonuje zestawienia zalet i wad proponowanej koncepcji.
This paper deals with precedents in civil law. The author’s assumption is that the specificity and constructs of the legal culture developed in continental Europe do not give grounds for claiming that precedents in the civil law systems occur in the same way as they do in the Anglo-Saxon system. In the civil law systems, a court decision is intrinsically not a source of law. Following a brief summary of relevant views of legal academics and commentators, this paper reflects upon certain mechanisms of a judicial authority’s action, which fulfils the criteria of a precedent. Parallels are sought between the semantic transposition mechanisms and the precedent formula modelled on research in linguistics is presented. Thus, the article outlines preliminary assumptions for the concept of a “precedent”, which builds on the courts’ practice to duplicate the meaning of law based on specific criteria set forth in this paper. Finally, pros and cons of the concept are summarized.

We present here the first visual interface for a Mexican Spanish Sign Language translator on its first development stage: sign-writing recognition. The software was developed for the unique characteristics of Mexican linguistics and was designed in order to use sentences or a sequence of signs in sign-writing system which are decoded by the program and converted into a series of images with movement that correspond to the Mexican sign language system. Using a lexical, syntactic and semantic algorithms plus free software such as APIss from Java, video converter software, data base manager like MySQL, Postgres and SQlite, was possible to read and interpret the rich and complex Mexican language. Our application for visual interface showed to be capable of reading and reconstruct each sentence used for the interpreter and translate it into a high definition video. The average time of video display vs number of sentences to interpret, probed to be in linear relation with an average time of two seconds per sentence. The software has overcome the problem of homonym words frequently used in Spanish language and verb tense relation for each sentence, special symbols such as #, %, $, etc. are still not recognized into the software.

Opis:
The present study – divided into two papers – provides an analysis of the semantics of the Vilamovicean verbal system within a cognitive and grammaticalization framework. On the one hand, the author offers a detailed description of the entire semantic potential of all the verbal constructions available in the language and, on the other, provides an explanation for the senses conveyed by each one of these forms – more specifically, it is demonstrated that the semantic sphere of every gram can be explained and, hence, unified by making use of typologically common evolutionary scenarios, viz. paths. Consequently, the author shows that the entire Vilamovicean verbal system can be modeled as a recursive process of grammaticalization “waves” whereby older and newer forms evolve along a set of identical paths. This paper constitutes the second part of the series. It provides an explanation of the semantic potentials offered by the Vilamovicean verbal formations and designs a cognitive-grammaticalization model of the entire verbal system of this language.

This paper illustrates a methodological approach to the design of an annotated corpus using a case study of phonetic convergences and divergences by multilingual speakers in southwestern Senegal’s Casamance region. The newly compiled corpus contains approximately 183,000 annotations of multilingual, spoken data, gathered by eight researchers over a ten year span using methods ranging from structured lexical elicitation in controlled contexts to naturally occurring, multilingual conversations. The area from which the data were collected consists of three villages and their primary languages, and yet many more contribute to the linguistic landscape. Detailed metadata inform analyses of variation, the context in which a speech act took place and between whom, the speakers’ linguistic repertoires, trajectories, and social networks, as well as the larger language context. A potential path for convergence or divergence that emerged during data collection and in building and searching the corpus is the crossroads in the phonetic production of word-initial velar plosives. Word-initial [k] emerges in one language where only [ɡ] is present in the other; the third utilizes both. The corpus design makes it feasible, not only to identify areas of accommodation, but to grasp the context, enabling a sociolinguistically informed analysis of the speakers’ linguistic behavior.

In the article, I discuss the legal aspects of language: using linguistic analyses for the benefit of the courts. I discuss linguists’ court communication situation and the expectations towards them. The starting point is one exemplary court case in which an expert linguist was appointed to issue an opinion on the evidence. The conclusions fall into two categories: linguistics and forensic science. Linguistic conclusions, developed in accordance with traditional methods of lexicographic analysis and lexicological and semantic analysis, are not necessarily (because they would not have to be) innovative for linguists. It was more important to show the situation of a linguist in court, the structure of judicial opinion and the procedures for building the linguistic response to a process inquiry as seen from the forensic perspective.

The author of the paper assumes that cognitive grammar has an educational potential, which is also noticeable in the increasing use of cognitive tools in foreign language teaching. A project of the University of Granada entitled “The educational potential of cognitive grammar” was a stimulus for this research. Therefore, the paper focuses on Spanish as a foreign language and the concept of construal defined by Langacker in his “Cognitive grammar”. The author, using content analysis and dimensions of construal as the methods of research, creates a key of categories of visual representations of grammar in textbooks of Spanish as a foreign language. The categories are inspired by the concept of construal, which is a natural human process. Pictures are used to facilitate the explication of grammar in a more comprehensible way. Moreover, the author shows the potential of creating visual representations of particular grammatical problems and benefits of their usage in teaching other foreign languages.

This article reflects on different approaches to multimodal communication in text linguistics. For some time text linguistics deals with multimodal texts, however, the communicative and functional complexity of language-image-texts could give a reason to establish a new discipline – image linguistics, which is based on texts linguistics and develops already existing text theory and analytical methods. Nevertheless, within this article I propose a compromise and vote for developing of multimodal text linguistics.
