Until now sandy soils can be considered as one roup having common hydrophysical problems. Therefore, a labo-ratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of bagasse as an amendment to improve hydrophysical properties of sandy soil, through the determination of bulk density, aggregate-size distribution, total porosity, hydraulic conductivity, pore-space structure and water retention. To fulfil this objective, sandy soils were amended with bagasse at the rate of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4% on the dry weight basis. The study results demonstrated that the addition of bagasse to sandy soils in between 3 to 4% on the dry weight basis led to a significant decrease in bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, and rapid-drainable pores, and increase in the total porosity, water-holding pores, fine capillary pores, water retained at field capacity, wilting point, and soil available water as compared with the control treatment.

In the automated environments, mobile robots play an important role to perform different tasks such as objects transportation and material handling. In this paper, a new method for a glassy elevator handling system based on H20 mobile robots is presented to connect distributed life science laboratories in multiple floors. Various labware and tube racks have to be transported to different workstations. Locating of elevator door, entry button detection, internal buttons recognition, robot arm manipulation, current floor estimation, and elevator door status checking are the main operations to realize a successful elevator handling system. The H20 mobile robot has dual arms where each arm consists of 6 revolute joints and a gripper. The gripper has two degrees of freedom. Different sensors have been employed with the robot to handle these operations such as Intel RealSense F200 vision sensor for entry and internal buttons detection with position estimation. A pressure sensor is used for current floor estimation inside the elevator. Also, an ultrasonic proximity distance sensor is utilized for checking the elevator door status. Different strategies including HSL color representation, adaptive binary threshold, optical character recognition, and FIR smoothing filter have been employed for the elevator operations. For pressing operation, a hand camera base and a new elevator finger model are designed. The elevator finger is resolved in a way to fit the arm gripper which is used also to manipulate the labware containers. The Kinematic solution is utilized for controlling the arms’ joints. A server/client socket architecture with TCP/IP command protocol is used for data exchange between Multi-Floor System and the H20 robot arms. Many experiments were conducted in life science laboratories to validate the developed systems. Experimental results prove an efficient performance with high success rate under different lightening condition.

In the case of underground network infrastructure it can be seen that objects functioning in the second technical condition, according to DWA-ATV 143-2, and subjected to rehabilitation with the use of close-fit trenchless technologies are capable of withstanding external loads. The main external load that is taken into account in engineering calculations in the case of conduits in the second technical condition is external groundwater pressure. In order to compare design parameters obtained with the use of various calculation methods, a comparative analysis was conducted in order to determine the values of critical pressure. The calculations were carried out using popular engineering algorithms. In addition, analyses using the Finite Element Method and Abaqus software as a computational tool were carried out for the purpose of verifying laboratory tests. This paper aims to broaden knowledge concerning the possibility of performing control numerical analyses for close-fit liners installed in pipelines that are in the second technical condition according to DWA-ATV 143-2. The analyses were carried out on ten 3D models. The models were parameterized in order to reflect the CIPP samples in the most accurate way. The computational models were built based on assumptions, which are commonly used in this type of scientific analysis, regarding material parameters and their interactions. The direct value of the performed engineering calculations and numerical analyses is the extension of knowledge in the field of strength parameters that are obtained by various material groups of close-fit liners. Comparative analysis of the results of laboratory tests and numerical analyses, and the conclusions that result from them, constitute the basis for the optimization of the design process and the individual approach to issues related to the use of liners that strengthen underground pipelines.

Tests that were carried out in order to obtain knowledge of the actual values of strength parameters obtained by CIPP liners that are used to repair pipelines. Specimens of liners made of high quality polyester felt cured with epoxy resin were subjected to tests. The scope of the performed studies corresponded with the scope of acceptance tests, which are carried out in the investment process during quality control of renovation works. Specimens of liners taken from sewers with 3 different diameters, i.e. 200mm, 350mm and 500mm were selected as representative for underground sewage networks. The obtained results enabled the calculations carried out in the course of design work to be verified, and differences between the model values of the strength parameters obtained from the calculations, and real values that are burdened with irregularities resulting from the conditions prevailing at a construction site and which were obtained for specimens taken from their built-in locations to be compared. The tests confirmed that it is possible to renovate - using CIPP liners - sewers with a lot of structural and material damage that negatively affects a liner‘s geometry. The implementation of the reinforcing internal coating in a sewer enables its further safe operation. The direct application value of the research involves the enlargement and clarification of knowledge concerning the actual load-bearing capacity of CIPP liners.

Indiscriminate use of Sniper 1000EC has become a serious problem among local fishermen in the Northern parts of Niger state. Juveniles of Clarias gariepinus (mean body weight 23.34 ±0.05 g; mean standard length, 20.00 ±0.45 cm) were subjected to 5 treatment levels of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/l. The tissue damages were observed majorly at 15 and 20 mg/l of sniper 1000EC exposed fish species. Oedema and hyperplasia were observed in the gills of the exposed groups. Hepatocellular steatosis and vacuolations were observed in the livers. Tubular nephrosis and hyperplasias of epithelial cells were also observed in the kidney. It is concluded that alterations in gills, livers and kidney of the exposed fish species were consequences of exposure to the toxicant (sniper 1000EC). It is recommended that the use of Sniper 1000EC by local fishermen be banned to save the aquatic environment from destruction.
Bezkrytyczne stosowanie Sniper 1000EC stało się poważnym problemem dla lokalnych rybaków w północnych częściach Nigru. Młode osobniki Clarias gariepinus (średnia masa ciała 23,34 ±0,05 g; średnia długość 20,00 ±0,45 cm) przetrzymywano w warunkach laboratoryjnych w środowisku zawierającym 0, 5, 10, 15 i 20 mg/l środka Sniper 1000EC. Uszkodzenia tkanek obserwowano głównie przy najwyższych stężeniach (15 i 20 mg/l). Obserwowano obrzęk i przerost skrzeli narażonych ryb. W wątrobie obserwowano stłuszczenie i wakuolację.W nerkach stwierdzono nefrozę i przerost komórek nabłonkowych. Wykazano, że zmiany w skrzelach, wątrobach i nerkach narażonych ryb były konsekwencjami narażenia na działanie insektycydu (Snajper 1000EC). Ze względu na dużą toksyczność zaleca się zakazać używania Sniper 1000EC.

Background. Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare disease caused by the acute angle of branching of the superior mesenteric artery from the aorta. Material and methods. There were 63 patients (56 women and 7 men) with low body weight, who reported recurrent persistent abdominal pain, nausea, post-prandial vomiting, significant weight loss. All of them had abdominal ultrasonography performed with measurement of the angle of branching of SMA from the aorta. CBC, total bilirubin, AST, ALT, GT, ALP, amylase, lipase, albumins, iron, sodium, potassium, GFR, lipid profile, TSH, urinalysis were ordered. Additionally, esophagogastroduodenoscopy with Hp. test and esophageal impedance measurement in correlation with the reported ailments was performed. Results. Acid reflux impedance was diagnosed in 10 patients. There were >55 acid reflux episodes per day and a positive reflux sign (SI) for heartburn and nausea. Abnormal impedance recording of acid reflux was diagnosed in 17 patients. They had >21 episodes of non-acid reflux per day. Positive reflux sign (SI) was not confirmed for any non-acid reflux-related symptoms. Conclusions. It is justified to perform impedance pH monitoring in this group of patients as it allows to modify the therapy. The most important dietary recommendations are weight gain and understanding the cause of the disease.
Wprowadzenie. Zespół tętnicy krezkowej górnej (ZTKG) (SMAS – ang. superior mesenteric artery syndrome) jest rzadko rozpoznawaną chorobą, a jej przyczyną jest ostry kąt odejścia tętnicy krezkowej górnej od aorty. Materiał i metody. Wyłoniono 63 pacjentów (56 kobiet i 7 mężczyzn) z niską masą ciała, którzy zgłaszali nawracające uporczywe dolegliwości bólowe w nadbrzuszu, nudności, poposiłkowe wymioty, istotną utratę masy ciała. Wszystkim wykonano ultrasonografię jamy brzusznej z pomiarem kąta odejścia TKG od aorty. Następnie oznaczono morfologię krwi, stężenie bilirubiny całkowitej, AST, ALT, GT, ALP, amylazy, lipazy, albuminy, żelazo, sód, potas, GFR, lipidogram oraz TSH, badanie ogólne moczu oraz wykonano gastrofiberoskopię z testem Hp. i pomiar impedancji przełykowej w korelacji ze zgłaszanymi dolegliwościami. Wyniki. Nieprawidłowy zapis impedancji w zakresie refluksu kwaśnego rozpoznano u 10 pacjentów. Zarejestrowano >55 epizodów refluksu kwaśnego na dobę oraz dodatni objaw refluksowy (SI) dla zgagi oraz uczucia nudności/mdłości. Nieprawidłowy zapis impedancji w zakresie refluksu niekwaśnego rozpoznano u 17 pacjentów. Obserwowano u nich >21 epizodów refluksu niekwaśnego na dobę. Dla żadnego objawu związanego z refluksem niekwaśnym nie potwierdzono dodatniego objawu refluksowego (SI). Wnioski. Uzasadnione jest wykonanie impendancji w tej grupie chorych gdyż pozwala na zmodyfikowanie terapii. Najważniejsze zalecenia dietetyczne to przyrost masy ciała i zrozumienie przyczyny choroby.

Omówiono metody ich utylizacji, a także wpływ funkcjonowania spalarni na środowisko. Przytoczono aktualne regulacje prawne obowiązujące w Polsce. Przybliżono zasady funkcjonowania obiektów utylizacji odpadów medycznych. Przytoczone zostały nowelizacje ustawy o odpadach medycznych z roku 2013.
The thesis presents the general concepts concerning. The work includes the methods of disposal as well as the import of medical waste incinerators on environment. The authors quote actual in Poland law regulations reoffering to the subject. The analysis of the main procedures relating to the effective treatment of medical waste is also discussed. The work indicates that the effective policy concerning the subject is of great importance due to its potential risks. The date set can serve as a source of information for later research on the topic. The thesis prove that medical waste is an important part of the economy. It also shows the possibilities of improving medical waste management.

Heavy metal is a type of metal that has a high density and high toxicity when consumed by living things, especially humans. To prevent the impact of environmental pollution, optimal handling of wastewater containing heavy metals is required, including the wastewater from laboratories. This research aimed to study the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and irradiation time on the reduction of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and Lead (Pb) heavy metals and their application to laboratory wastewater treatment. Among the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) methods, photocatalysis was chosen to reduce the level of Cu, Fe, and Pb heavy metals where zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as a photocatalyst and the sunlight as a light source. To determine the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and time on the reduction of heavy metal levels, firstly, this research used the synthetic wastewater containing Cu, Fe, or Pb heavy metals. On the basis of the experimental results, it is concluded that the pH value, catalyst dose, and time affect the photocatalytic process, decreasing the levels of Cu, Fe, and Pb metals. The optimum pH value obtained for Cu was at pH 7–8, for Fe it was at pH 6, and for Pb it was at pH 8; in turn, the metal removal percentages were 99.46, 99.91, and 99.70%, respectively. In the photocatalysis of synthetic wastewater, high removal percentage of more than 99% was achieved by using 0.1 g/L catalyst. The optimum decrease of metals occurred in the first 15 minutes of solar irradiation where the removal percentage was close to 100%. In this study, the application of ZnO photocatalyst under solar irradiation can reduce the heavy metals content in the laboratory wastewater by almost 100%, which meets the environmental quality standard for Cu, Fe, and Pb.

When designing dam spillway structures, the most significant consideration is the energy dissipation arrangements. Different varieties of baffle blocks and stilling basins have been used in this context. However, the hydraulic jump form of stilling basin is considered to be the most suitable. The main objective of this research was to introduce four different baffle block shapes (models arranged from A to D, installed at slopes 0.00, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 in the stilling basins). To illustrate the consequences for the qualities of pressure-driven bounce, each model was attempted in the bowl. The trials applied Froude numbers between 6.5 and 9.2. The puzzle square model D provided the best outcomes compared to the models A, B, C and smooth. Model D with different models at inclines 0.00, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 was used to consider the impacts of perplex hinders on water driven-bounce when bed slants were changed. When the model D baffle used instead of a smooth bed at 0.08 slope, the reduction in y2 / y1 reached 12.8%, and Lj / y1 was 18.9%. Among the different bed slopes, a normal decrease in y2 / y1 ranged from approximately 10.3%, whereas the normal decrease in Lj / y1 was about 13.8% when the model D baffle was used instead of the model A baffle with a horizontal slope bed of 0.00. The results show that the new shapes led to a decrease in sequent profundity proportion and length of jump proportion; however, the energy dissipation proportion increased.

Opis:
The hospitals close to the residences can make problems for the environment as a consequence of sewage drained into the water stream. Sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) offers advantages for treating sewage; such as simple operation, flexible process, and cost-effective. The laboratory bench-scale experiments were carried out treating hospital wastewater (HWW) of one of Basrah hospital city by a fabricated SBBR reactor of 26 l working volume. The hospital wastewater has the following characteristics (average values): pH 7.3, BOD equal to 280 mg·l–1, COD equal to 550 mg·l–1, total phosphorus (TP) equal to 6.4 mg·l–1, ammonia (NH3-N) equal to 44 mg·l–1 and total suspended solid (TSS) equal to 272 mg·l–1. This research aims to estimate the performance of the SBBR system for treating hospital wastewater to enhance different effluent parameters such as COD, total nitrogen (TN), ammonia, and total phosphorous (TP) with various dissolved oxygen (DO) with range of 2.15–6.55 mg·l–1, the best DO values give these removal efficiencies for COD equal to 84.55%, NH3-N equal to 65.91% and TN between 78 and 18% for DO equal to 3.67 mg·l–1, while TP removal efficiency was 79.70% for DO equal to 6.55 mg·l–1. By comparison of the SBBR effluent with international standards for effluent sewage, it noticed COD concentration 85 mg·l–1, TN 12 mg·l–1 and TP 1.3 mg·l–1 met all standards (European, WHO, and China), while NH3-N 15 mg·l–1 was outside WHO and European standards, while satisfies only Chinese standard.

Opis:
For the enlargement of the nautical dimensions of Santos Port Outer Access Channel (Brazil), training walls crossing the Offshore Bar are needed. The training walls choice to reduce dredging rates also induces to consider a coupling planning between nautical purposes and shore protection measures, as Santos Municipality have serious erosion problems nowadays due to the urban growth in the backshore and sea level rise. For decision support, the Hydraulic Laboratory of Engineering School of University of Sao Paulo was commissioned to study in a composite mathematical and scale model. Results include changes in wave height and direction and current speed analysis to conditions with training walls and segmented breakwaters. The water renewal was also analyzed to the condition with segmented breakwater and compared to current situation, based on hydrodynamics results and considering that this structure can reduce water quality in this area.
