Preview: At times, the COVID-19 Pandemic has spent words of their value. We academic philosophers have written many articles in relation to it, and plenty of social media posts, as well as other discourse on it. It all seems effete to stop the flames we have kindled that led to this global tragedy. Our civilizational unsustainability and instability have borne down on us the last year and a half, and at times it seems to reveal a dire fall. There is a sense of failing to avoid a pandemic-onium all too visible and nearing as we descend to the depths. Like the Devil’s palace, this place is also of our own creation. Whether this zeitgeist is but the Calvinist vision of perennial despair reappearing its fantastical face or indeed a portent of the times to come, we cannot but at time see through the eyes of the rebel fallen angel, with smoldering sorrow and anger for our world, if not heaven, well lost. It becomes hard in such moments to have any hope that one’s own work at self and communal cultivation is anywhere near enough. It sometimes feels as if all we can do is fiddle as Rome burns. Are we participating in our own downfall? Even if not in the confines of academic philosophy, and doing broad based cultivation work in philosophy as a way of life (PWL), how can one not but feel helpless and wrathful about our own situation, for the countless dead by government inaction to the virus, corporate greed and entitlement to protect vaccine formulas, hubristic populace quests for superior conspiratorial knowledge, growing authoritarianism, unchecked white supremacist fascism, and biological devastation caused by an unsustainable late-capitalistic, hyper abstracted, global economy? Those feelings seem righteously luciferian. However, our global wisdom traditions, with nuance, challenge us against mere smoldering anger, or at least not without guidance. To go further, our PWL wisdom traditions have long exhorted us to strive for ataraxia (a state of serene calm and clarity), and even to amor fati (love [our] fate), especially at the worst of times.

BSP was conceived by David Fiordalis and the late Luis Gómez, the then Academic Director at Mangalam Research Center for Buddhist Languages, following a dedicated conference on Hadot and the study of Buddhism in 2015 (BSP, ix). The volume builds upon groundbreaking work by scholars such as Matthew Kapstein, Georges Dreyfus, Patrick Ussher and Vincent Eltschinger (as well as several of its contributors) in exploring the implications the revolutionary metaphilosophical work of French philologist and philosopher Pierre Hadot for comparative philosophical approaches to Buddhist thought, and indeed for engagements with other nonwestern philosophical traditions.

It has been my observation that Poland is unique for having a philosophy of culture tradition that has theoretical depth and insight into the origins and role of philosophy, popular breadth throughout Polish philosophy in a variety of departments, institutes and programs, and for its cultural relevancy. Yet, this tradition is largely unknown in philosophy/philosophy of culture circles in the English-speaking world.

Preview: Philosophy has notably struggled in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to come to terms with how it participated in the erasure and invisibility of persons across the globe. Western philosophy over hundreds of years found itself immersed in the colonial project, in all its economic, social, political, legal, disciplinary, and aesthetic dimensions. Its logic of Western racial superiority, grounded in eugenics, social Darwinism, and deterministic accounts of racial realism, grew and deepened, especially in Europe and the Americas. No domain was free, even Hugo Grotius’ grand work on international law and diplomacy, Mare Liberum (The Free Sea) was founded in justifying Dutch colonial seizures of ships and resources. The haunting of those shorn of their dignity besets us. We have forgotten, in a sense to go “backwards”; not just to “bracket” our stories of the world, but to see the persons we have continued to ignore through certain horizons of dominating meaning. It has been up to these people to find themselves even when under the erasure of the dominant mode of history, and in turn they have much to teach those of us willing to turn back to listen.

2020, the year the coronavirus pandemic spread globally, marked the twenty-fifth year since the publication of Pierre Hadot’s work Philosophy as a Way of Life (translated by co-author Michael Chase). In that time, what began as the research specialization of just a few scholars has become a growing area of philosophical and metaphilosophical inquiry, bringing together researchers from around the globe. Hadot’s key ideas of spiritual exercises, and the very idea of PWL, have been applied to a host of individual thinkers from across the history of philosophy: from the Hellenistic and Roman-era philosophers of direct concern to Hadot, through renaissance thinkers like Petrarch, Lipsius, Montaigne, Descartes, or Bacon, into nineteenth-century thinkers led by Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche. In more recent years, more global reflections on the “very idea” of PWL have begun to emerge, as well as dedicated journal editions. In these more recent PWL studies, some of the manifold research questions have begun to be explored, which were opened up by the studies of Pierre and Ilsetraut Hadot, as well as its reception in Michel Foucault’s later work. What implications, after all, does understanding the history of PWL, and the predominance of this metaphilosophical conception in the history of Western thought, have for how we understand the practice(s) of philosophy today? Does recovering the alternative understandings of philosophy as a practice in history necessarily lead to a criticism of contemporary, solely academic or theoretical modes of philosophizing, or is the idea of PWL one which has only historiographical force?

The households' environment is a system of conditions, which determine the functioning of households, especially their condition and their behavior on the market and during the consumption process. This environment is comprised of five groups of elements. The firsl group encompasses the macroeconomic indicators influencing the social sense of security and trust. The next two groups of environmental elements determine the economic as well as socio-cultural condition of households. The fourth group contains those elements of the environment, which influence the level and structure of individual consumption. The last group of elements influences the satisfaction of the household members. This paper also comprises selected examples of the elements of the environment, influencing the social sense of security and trust. These are, among others, the unemployment rate, GDP growth rate in Poland and in the EU countries, inflation rate, PLN exchange rate to USD budget deficit in relation to GDP. The empirical evidence shows the unfavorable influence of these macroeconomic indicators on the social sense of security and trust.

Opis:
My aims are to investigate how the concept of narrative moment may be helpful in capturing the role of music in creating profound communication on the level of performing as well as listening to musical performance. I aim to show how sharing a culminating moment in a musical experience may lead to inducing a state of self awareness and confidence in place of critical separation and distrust. I discuss Lawrence Kramer’s idea of the narrative moment explained in original in reference to a literary example and an improvised music. It is presented as an example of communicative potential in music performance, which as I argue, is worth exploring and explaining further. Suggesting a possibility of narrative moment in the experience of musical performances offers a comprehensible and applicable vision of communicative potential of music that is far reaching even if rarely achieved; a possibility of communication that is direct and intuitive, flexible and affective. Defining musical meaning in terms of its music’s communicative power and far reaching social consequences suggests deep connections between the social/intersubjective, individual/subjective and aesthetic aspects of life. The proper explanation of the meaning of music requires drawing from different domains, including metaphors and highly persuasive literary and musical examples.

Szczawno Zdrój
Opis:
In the spa park at Szczawno-Zdrój near Wałbrzych stands a forgotten and uncared-for today sculpture representing a dog in actual size that has been hewn in sandstone. It is a portrait of the beloved great Dane that belonged to Prince George II who himself was a great patron of artists owning the Castle at Brzeg upon the Odra River. The sculpture in question constitutes a rather rare example of a Renaissance monument devoted to an animal. It was created prior to 1586 and according to every probability is the work of the Prince’s court sculptor, Michael Kramer. Unfortunately, to this sculpture none Polish scientific or poularizing publication has until now been devoted. The author reminds the long and lively history of that monument which after the year 1741 and prior to 1757 was transferred to Wszechświęta near Oleśnica. In the early 1840’s it has been moved to Szczawno but was situated in anther place. After the year 1918 the sculpture was placed within the rosary where it is standing still today. In view of extensive restoration carried out in the Castle of Brzeg in connection with the forthcoming 300th anniversary of death of the last Silesian ruler, a descendent of the Pyast family, which will be celebrated in 1975, the author advanced the proposal that the sculpture, after indispensable restoration, be transferred to its original localization, i.e. that in the corner of the first floor loggia of the rebuilt residence of princes at Brzeg.

With the late Author’s (†24.04.2015) kind permission, the present text is published here in a somewhat abbreviated and modified translation that has been given appropriate subheadings and supplemented with an extensive bibliography. Its German original from 1996 has been translated into French (1998) and English (2012). The purpose of the present translation is to make the Polish reader acquainted with the important and innovative account of Plato’s philosophy that has been put forward by the Tübingen School whose one of the most prominent co-founders was Hans Joachim Krämer. While this text is devoted to Plato’s critique of writing, it also presents Plato’s agrapha dogmata as an important supplement to the written dialogues. A fuller overview of the major assumptions of this new interpretation is to be found in the recently published Gesammelte Ansätze zu Platon (2014).

Social housing, as an element of the housing policy of every developed country, remains an important, though not fully explored, issue from both theoretical and practical perspectives. No uniform model of the functioning and financing of this part of the real estate sector has been introduced in Poland. In the paper, an attempt will be made to define social housing and to draw a line between the Polish terms of ‛budownictwo społeczne’ and ‛budownictwo socjalne,’ which, according to the author, cannot be treated as synonymous. The legal and institutional framework of the Turkish real estate market will be presented, with an emphasis on the specific characteristics of the Turkish model of social housing.

In this essay, I explore Cassirer’s brief discussion of utopia in An Essay on Man, as likely built upon Kant’s theory of genius as from the Critique of Judgment. This exploration of Cassirer’s theory of utopia lays the groundwork to argue that a utopia is the dynamic product (work) of the “ethical genius,” a work that advances culture by luring it, via ideal imaginaries, to new realms of possibility for ethical advancement. Utopias have their dangers and limits, but nevertheless have a critical role to play in improving our ethical life.
