    The co n ten ts of th e p re s e n t re p o r t consists in conse rv a tio n of th e 17th c e n tu ry sg ra ffito decoration (256X312 cm) on a w a ll of th e town house in Z a ja z dowa s tre e t a t Trzeb iatów. The su b je c t of th is wo rk is an e lep h a n t w ith its k eeper. The sg ra ffito in q u e stion was a lre a d y two times su b d u ed to co n se rv a tio n tre a tm e n ts , n amely in 1895 an d in 1914. As a r e s u lt of th e s e tw o re s to ra tio n s a lm o st one q u a r te r of o rig in a l p la s te r was lo st an d th e th u s p ro d u c ed losses w e re filled w ith lim e -sa n d and cemen t m o rta rs , an d la te r on coated w ith two lay e rs of oil p a in t o v e r-p a in tin g s. The chemical in v e s tig a tio n s c a rrie d out on th e p re s e rved p o rtio n s of sg ra ffito h av e shown th a t th e lime- -s a n d p la s te r 1 cm th ick was la id in one la y e r an d th e n coloured g rey by m e an s of charcoal. On this g ro u n d was co n seq uen tly laid a th in g ro u n d c o n ta ining yellow ochre an d th e hollow cut d raw in g was made. P rio r to s ta rtin g th e co n se rv a tio n it h a s beer, sta te d th a t some 50 p e r cen t of p la s te r had b liste red an d c ra ck ed th u s showing n um e ro u s losses w h e re a s th e en tire su rfa c e was stro n g ly p o llu ted w ith ta r and flak in g p a in t th a t both caused th a t th e d raw in g is a t p re s e n t poorly legible. D u rin g th e p re s e n t co n se rv a tio n all th e la te r p la s te r su p p lem en ta tio n s and o v e r-p a in tin g s w e re removed. The oil p a in t was removed by means of p a ra f fin p a ste with a n a dm ix tu re of organic solvents. The b liste red p la s te r was fix ed w ith aq ueous solution of “P rim a l AC-33” (a k in d of ac ry lic resin) w ith an add itio n of sodium p e n ta c h lo ro p h e n o la te while th e m a jo r b lis te rs w e re a d d itio n a lly re in fo rc ed w ith th e use of copp e r w ire “sp id e rs ” fix ed w ith epoxide resin. To fix th e p a in tin g th e whole was s a tu ra te d w ith lime w a te r. The p la s te r losses w e re filled w ith lim e -sa n d m o rta r co ntaining an a dm ix tu re of charcoal. On completion of th e ab ove tre a tm e n ts a new lime p rim e r, con ta in in g yellow ochre has b een laid an d th e missing fragm e n ts of d raw in g w e re reco v ered . The re to u ch e s w e re e x e cuted w ith h o rizo n ta l yellow ochre lines w ith th e use of lime w ith “P rim a l AC-33” an d sodium p e n ta c h lo rp h en o la te addition.

    Opis:
    Sur l ’exemple de quelques plafonds à Toruń, conservés par les Ateliers de Conservation des Monuments historiques et conservés le plus souvent par fragments et relativement dans un mauvais état, on a examiné les méthodes de conservation de ces objectifs et leur nouvelle forme de conservation. La peinture poudreuse se trouvant directement sur le bois a été consolidée par une solution aqueuse de 3% de polyalcool de vinyle. Les exfoliations et les gonflements de la mince couche de peinture, posée sur une préparation solide, ont été détrempées par une émulsion de polyacetate de vinyle et, ensuite, pressées à la base. L’on n’a pas réussi, par contre, à enlever les taches sombres des peintures provoquées par la moisissure, on les a donc laissé non consolidées afin d’avoir la possibilité d’y remédier à l’avenir après avoir trouvé une préparation appropriée. On a complété les pertes du mortier par de la craie sur un adhésif de polyalcool de vinyle et on a employé aussi cet adhésif dans les teintures avec lesquelles on a pointé les manques. On a pointé par des traits conformes dans le sens des couches du bois. Par contre, il n’a pas été fait de reconstruction, recouvrant les plus grandes parties des pertes d’une couleur dans la même teinte que celle du plafond.

    Opis:
    In hitherto conservation activities the problem of the architecture of service ground floors and their windows has been either omitted or treated freely and their architectural value denied. Still, shop windows have always constituted an integral part of tenement houses and as such, ranking with them, deserve to be covered by conservation care. Some of the shops in tenement houses appeared in the Middle Ages but trade, as a rule, was concentrated on market squares and on town markets. It was at that time that attributes of shops came into sight: trade marks, signboards and wooden hoods protecting goods sold in front of shops as well as front entrances to cellars. Along with the development of the town and industry, in the second half of the 18th centruy shops began to appear in tenement houses more and often. After that fact had become legalized in the early 19th century ground floors were adapted for trading functions. At first only the door leading from the street to the shop was pierced and accentuated with a wooden hood or with shelves. At the end of the first half of the 19th century the grilles on the ground floors were removed and replaced with shutters. At the same time shop windows got enlarged at the expense of entrances to cellars and glazed with small panes. In the fifties there appeared case-like shop windows — wooden, self-bearing constructions fixed into the elevation. A development of glass manufacture and construction materials made it possible to glaze bigger surfaces and to enlarge windows of the ground floor. Two storeyed and wooden shop windows, folded-up shutters and markees appeared. In the secession period, architecture of interiors became particularly spectacular and formed a uniform entity with buildings. A department store, which came into existence at the end of the 19th century, adopted and developed shop windows with enlarged window oriffices. A characteristic feature of modernism were big simple shop windows corresponding to the needs of display and satisfying tastes. On the other hand this led to the reconstruction and removal of older types of shop windows. A danger of chaos in architecture of shop windows was noticed in the twenties of this century. Works were undertaken during which a big number of advertisments and signboards was removed from the elevations and ground floors were restored to their old forms and details. At present, in conservation works carried out in Wroclaw on buildings of historic merit one can notice a tendency to enlarge to a maximum extent windows found on ground floors and to remove completely all details. Such methods do not meet the requirements, as indirect stages of the development of shop windows had also their value and now they just disappear at a disquieting rate. It is thus necessary to have a stock-taking and to include this problem into the process of the town revival.

    The article concerns frescos from the 15th century bourgeois tenement house called “Pod Aniołkiem” in Cracow. Most important issues raised here are: contemporary conservation and restoration of classical polychrome on the eastern wall of the front room on the second floor and the visualisation of this room with regard to restoration and design works conducted there in the seventies. The room is such an excellent example of the variety of historical layers that it has become the subject of the computer three-dimensional visualisation. The spectator can be easily sent to different appearances of the room – in chosen periods of time. The history of the tenement house called “Pod Aniołkiem” and the description of the frescos inside are also included in the article. Other issues discussed here are: problems with conservation in the seventies of the twentieth century and the attitude of restorers towards the exhibition of wall paintings. Last but not least, the condition of frescos’ conservation in the room and the physical-chemical researches carried out there are tackled as well. Translated by Dobromiła Kwiatkowska
