Opis:
Jon Fosse is perhaps the most popular contemporary Norwegian playwright today, often being compared to Henrik Ibsen. This article analyses one of his most famous and frequently staged dramas, “The Name”. Reference is made to Peter Szondi’s definition of classical drama as interpersonal relationships in the present, but it is used to show that a negation of the above is the underlying principle of Fosse’s plays, including “The Name”. Fosse seems to be of the opinion that interpersonal relationships in the modern world are barely possible. An analysis of “The Name” is done to illustrate this thesis. Major importance has been given to the language, with its typical features such as repetitions, aborted sentences and pauses. The author concludes that the extraordinary characteristics of Fosse’s language are the most prominent and idiosyncratic element of his rather traditionally constructed plays and, hence, a key to his growing popularity outside Norway.

Opis:
The article concentrates on the reception of Jon Fosse’s plays in Poland, where the dramatist remains practically unknown, although he has recently become the most frequently staged playwright in Europe. It seems that Fosses dramas have not found understanding among Polish critics. The article analyses the reviews of Fosse’s dramas published in Polish press until May 2004. Till then only three plays were staged in Polish theatres and five were translated. The author points out that Fosse’s dramas in Poland, rather than being a permanent element of the repertoire, are frequently staged as parts of various theatrical projects aiming at finding new solutions for modern drama and theatre. Finally, she concludes that the dialogue of Fosse’s plays is always their most original (although often controversial) element, regardless of the language of translation.

We prove a generalised tightness theorem for cocycles over an ergodic probability preserving transformation with values in Polish topological groups. We also show that subsequence tightness of cocycles over a mixing probability preserving transformation implies tightness. An example shows that this latter result may fail for cocycles over a mildly mixing probability preserving transformation.

There is no point in saying anything – on 'I Am the Wind' by Jon Fosse

Opis:
I Am the Wind is one of the last works Jon Fosse wrote for theatre. The piece was first staged during the Bergen Festival in 2007. Even though it was only a few years later that Fosse declared the end of his dramatic career, his playwriting with this play is clearly moving on its way out of the theatre and into a borderland between thought and action; it manifests an extremely subjective and the physical presence in which items from Fosse’s poetry are more clearly seen. In this article, I want to read I Am the Wind primarily as a theatre piece, that is, a text written for the stage, and emphasize the use of poetic elements. The piece’s sections of dialogue revolve around existential and individual psychological questions at the boundary of the banal; it thematizes both the need and the fear of loneliness. It also deals with nature’s magical attraction to humans and with the importance of silence on several levels. The work stages the death wish of late modern humanity, and provides lyrical and language-philosophical interpretations of this, which I wish to read into the apparently simple plot of the piece. I Am the Wind can be described through a number of features that also characterize both earlier and later pieces of Fosse’s writing. Simply put, the play is about two people’s voyage to the open sea in a boat; one of the characters jumps overboard and commits suicide. The situation in the play takes place either in the head of the one who witnesses the suicide, or there is a meeting between the two characters after death. Either way, this is a basic situation which assumes that the expectations of a realistic stage action are to be set aside. But what is the reason why Fosse shifts his piece against a dramatic zero point? What is the purpose of reducing the stage expression to a lyrical outline that almost destroys the theatrical form? Fosse often opts for silent moments in his pieces. I Am the Wind is an infinite and enigmatic boat trip that requires us to look at the play as a landscape without being forced to define it in words: for the words disappear during the boat trip; they are taken and gone with the wind; “there is no point in saying anything.”

We study the thick subcategories of the stable category of finitely generated modules for the principal block of the group algebra of a finite group G over a field of characteristic p. In case G is a p-group we obtain a complete classification of the thick subcategories. The same classification works whenever the nucleus of the cohomology variety is zero. In case the nucleus is nonzero, we describe some examples which lead us to believe that there are always infinitely many thick subcategories concentrated on each nonzero closed homogeneous subvariety of the nucleus.

Opis:
Using examples from popular culture and history, the author speculates on the reasons and possible solutions to the crisis of trust in academia, especially along the line dividing specialists from non-specialists. The article begins with two case studies (of Yuval Noah Harari and Gustave Le Bon) that highlight the problem of conscious or otherwise data manipulation and the intention behind it. In the second part of the article, a broader approach is adopted to the matters of ethics of research and especially the crucial issue of the awareness (or lack thereof) of self-limitations and biases of which perhaps no academic is free. The article ends with the assertion that rather than individual researchers, we should trust in the academic process of the never-ending peer review.
