untranslatability
Opis:
In this article I endeavour to tackle the myth of Derrida’s untranslatability. First, I present the theoretical basis for my research – Henri Meschonnic’s poetics of translation. Then, I try to determine the factors which make translating Derrida’s texts difficult: the polysemy of his most important terms and the “terminological fields,” that is all the terms related to each other. Two examples of these fields support my argument. Finally, I analyse some Polish translations of Derrida’s text and show linguistic difficulties in Polish translations of La différance and other texts, where not only the Derridean style, but also grammar, vocabulary, and expertise in philosophy leave a lot to be desired.

Opis:
The article discusses zoomorphism as part of the anthropocentric discourse aimed at establishing human dominance over animals. Basing on Jacques Derrida’s 1997 paper “The Animal That Therefore I Am (More to Follow),” the article approaches anthropomorphism and zoomorphism as culturally sanctioned ways of misrepresenting animality and shaping human attitudes towards real-life animals. A symptom of the misrepresentation is the gap between animals and their linguistic denotations. The specific aim of the article is to demonstrate that zoomorphism as used in everyday language conserves the human-centered vision of the world by ignoring the differences between individual animals. The discussion concludes by arguing that zoomorphism can be remedied by the individualizing aspects of anthropomorphism.

A certain fragment of the contemporary continental thought, especially French, has found a surprisingly innovative reception in the United States of America, adopting the autonomous form of so called "French Theory". A characteristic feature of this trend are „territorial displacements” occurring within the traditional fields of knowledge and amongstsignificant figures there are the works by Jacques Derrida, as well as the less known works by Michel de Certeau. The intellectual meeting and exchange of thoughts that took place between these two thinkers was focused on the issues of religion writing.

Zestawienie tych dwóch – skądinąd obu uznawanych za poststrukturalistów – filozofów służy uwydatnieniu kluczowej roli, jaką problem historyczności pełni w dziele Jacques’a Derridy. Tekst stanowi tym samym zachętę do rewizji statusu Derridy w polskiej humanistyce.
This article presents Jacques Derrida as a philosopher of history. The concepts he developed during his long intellectual career turn out to be linked to a specific vision of history. This vision manifests itself from Derrida’s very first texts and is not one of the minor themes of his thought but its fundamental element. The article focuses on a selected essay by Derrida that led to his argument with Michel Foucault. The comparison of these two - both poststructuralist - philosophers serves to highlight the key role of the problem of historicity in Jacques Derrida’s work. The article thus encourages a revision of Derrida’s status in Polish philosophy, and more broadly in humanities.

Opis:
This article aims to be a confrontation with Nancy’s “deconstruction of Christianity”. For Nancy to deconstruct Christianity means to point to the places where Christianity itself overflows its status as religion and as metaphysics. Nancy shows how the three Christian mysteries (Trinity, Incarnation, Resurrection) are not merely explainable metaphysically and how they thus open the thought of the new relation between body-mind. These theses have been criticized by Jacques Derrida reading of Nancy’s work in Le Toucher. Jean-Luc Nancy. Derrida turns his attention to a certain strand of the tradition which he calls “haptological” (from the Greek haptein, to touch). This tradition is implicated in the metaphysical gesture insofar as it thinks touch in terms of identity, homogeneity, immediacy and self-presence, even when it emphasizes a certain interruption or distance. According to Derrida, this is Nancy’s complicity with some form of metaphysical thinking. The conclusion of this article aims to expose the multidimensional discussion between philosophers.

The imaginary landscapes of Anselm Kiefer and Jacques Derrida intersect at a very specific point. The motif of grey is present both in the painting activity of the German artist and in the textual body of the French theoretician. I have attempted here to analyse some particular images and a few fragments of text in order to show the importance and the function of grey in contemporary culture. The colour I deal with is unusual as it refers to some of the most pertinent topics of our history and art. The grey - both in the works of Kiefer and in the booklet of Derrida entitled Feu la cendre - is the trace of destruction, the sign of perishing and the colour of ashes. It is impossible to discuss the history of the 20th century without this very specific reference which is both visual and conceptual.

This article focuses on the autobiographical ghost that dwells in “Envois” and the multiple ways he/she/it interferes in Derrida’s concept of écriture. Read through love letters sent as postcards with the image representing Socrates writing in front of Plato, Derrida’s writing, I argue, definitely becomes a cryptic writing (écriture cryptique) both in the sense of kryptô (Gr. coded) and secerno (Lat. set apart). I endeavor to show that “Envois”-largely autobiographical and entangled in his life events-is a harbinger of the secret that Derrida takes for a fundamental feature of democracy in his later works. And yet the secret is of his own, as he notes when writing “Envois”: “Nobody will never know what the secret I write along with is. And that I say this will not change anything” (Peeters 2010: 367).

Where else, if not “in a text”, can two bright minds, or two writers, meet? Is it possible for two intellectuals who engage in a dialogue to understand each other without appropriation, i.e. without constantly borrowing from each other and commenting on each other’s ideas? This essay is an attempt at answering these questions by using the unique relation between Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida as an example. The friendship between these two is based on efforts to understand each other’s thoughts and writings – but all this is not without respect for each other’s singularity, sovereignty and intimacy.

Opis:
In 2017, as part of the “New Humanities” series (vol. 23), the first ever Polish translation of Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever: A Freudian Impression was published. Jacques Derrida was one of the few contemporary philosophers interested in the concept of the archive (while to a large extent ignoring archivists themselves). For Derrida, archivisation, which grants one the power to name and grant identity to all things (and also to share their meaning) gives rise to a number of ethical, intellectual and political issues. As a result, the concept of the archive constitutes an important part of his philosophy, raising archives to a rank which they hardly ever achieve outside of the field of archival studies. Regardless of one’s opinion on deconstructivism, whether one considers it to be an “intellectual fad” or a genuine method of research, the critical power of this approach enables us to look at various archive-related issues from an unorthodox point of view. The term archive is omnipresent in Derrida’s body of work, but it is only in Archive Fever that the author explicitly targets a group of topics which limit the issue of archives to the role of writing in society. Derrida treats “archivisation” and “writing” as metaphors communicating with each other, associated with the concepts of memory and the subconscious.

This paper aims to draw a connection between Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Marion in regard to the role of negative theology. This scrutiny shows meaningful contributions of the Authors to a new definition of subjectivity in a post-metaphysical age, and their consideration about which possibilities are still open for a non-predetermined history given outside of the presence domain. The future is neither a totalisation of history by its end, nor a simple continuation of the present. It is an eschatological event, where the relationship with the other plays a crucial role for the self-constitution. Such an interlacement is generated by the confession, where the link between past and future is not causally determined, but instead it is self-witness, as in Augustine’s masterpiece, essential reference for both the Authors

Andrew Taylor (b. 1940), one of the most eminent living Australian poets, has had a lasting relationship with Poland and Opole in particular. As a result of one of his several visits to Opole, he wrote two poems, “Dinner by the River,” which was later included in the volume edited by Peter Rose The Best Australian Poems 2008 (Melbourne: Black Inc., 2008), and “Driving to the Airport,” which appeared in The Unhaunting (London: Salt, 2009). Both poems were originally included in the volume Australia: Identity, Memory and Destiny (ed. Wolny and Nicieja, Opole 2008). The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explore the image of Poland, and the Odra River in particular, the Australian poet has created, alongside the memories of the past his visit to Poland evoked. The elements that unite the Polish poems are the ones connected with coal, soot, fi re, ashes, embers and what Jacques Derrida called cendre (cinder) in one of his most important books, Feu la cendre [Cinders] (Minneapolis, London 2014).
