It is well known that a weakly almost periodic operator T in a Banach space is mean ergodic, and in the complex case, also λT is mean ergodic for every |λ|=1. We prove that a positive contraction on $L_1$ is weakly almost periodic if (and only if) it is mean ergodic. An example shows that without positivity the result is false. In order to construct a contraction T on a complex $L_1$ such that λT is mean ergodic whenever |λ|=1, but T is not weakly almost periodic, we prove the following: Let τ be an invertible weakly mixing non-singular transformation of a separable atomless probability space. Then there exists a complex function $φ ∈ L_∞$ with |φ(x)|=1 a.e. such that for every λ ∈ℂ with |λ|=1 the function ⨍ ≡ 0 is the only solution of the equation ⨍(τx)=λφ(x)⨍(x). Moreover, the set of such functions φ is residual in the set of all complex unimodular measurable functions (with the $L_1$ topology)

Isacco di Ninive e uno degli autori meno conosciuti in Occidente. Ma il suo insegnamento e molto importante per la Chiesa d’Oriente. Dopo le traduzioni in lingua russa dei suoi scritti, e stato riconosciuto dagli ortodossi come uno degli autori principali della vita monastica. La sua dottrina spirituale e fondata sul concetto della Misericordia Divina. L’articolo descrive punti principali del concetto della Miseri-cordia Divina sul esempio di uno dei discorsi di Isacco. Non e soltanto una delle dimensioni del Famore divino, ma motore di tutta la oikonomia (sir:) cioe attraverso la Misericordia si puó capire la storia ed entrare in comunione eon Dio. Ma la Misericordia cosi accentuata faceva e fa paura, perche puó provocare difficolta, anzitutto nell’attivita pastorale. Per ąuesto gli scritti di Isacco sono - secondo i monaci - non per i giovani, ma soltanto per i coloro che hanno un certo livello nella vita monastica.

We consider a nontrivial vector space \(X\) and a semimodular \(M\colon X\tp [0, \infty]\) with property: \((\forall\ x \in X) (\exists\ \alpha \gt 0)\ M (\alphax) \lt \infty\) (in other words, \(M\) is normal (i.e. \((\forall\ x\in X \setminus \{0\}) (\exists \alpha \gt 0)\ M (\alphax) \gt 0)\) pregenfunction). The function \(M\) generates in \(X\) a metric \(d\) with \[ d(x, y) := inf \{a \gt 0: M (a^{-1} (x-y)) \leq a\}. \] At the same time \(M\) generates a metric \(\rho\) in Musielak-Orlicz sequence space \(l_M\), namely \[ \rho(\varphi, \psi) := inf \{a \gt 0 : I(a^{-1} (\varphi - \psi)) \leq a\} \] with \(I(\varphi) = \sum_{n \geq 1} M (\varphiφ(n))\). It is proved that the space \((l_M,\rho)\) is complete if and only if the space \((X, d)\) is complete. We consider also the closed subspace \(G_M \subset l_M\) of sequences \(\varphi = \{\varphi(n)\}\) such that \((\forall \alpha \gt 0) (\exists m \in N) \sum_{n\geq m} M(\alpha\varphi(n)) \lt \infty\) and prove that \((G_M ,\rho)\) is separable if and only if \((X, d)\) is the same. Several examples are considered.

he purpose of this article is to express, expand and sharpen views concerning history, historiography, historical evaluation and reliability, and the main literary nature of the book of Chronicles as a whole in its own historical context. These are vital issues that have direct implications for understanding the book, its content, its purpose, and credibility as a source for the history of Israel in the monarchic period, and for the development of Judaism in the Second Temple era. In order to accomplish this task, some common features of the Chronicler’s writing and the related ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman historical writings are provided. Furthermore, the presumed Chronicler’s lines of thought and his evaluations of sources are scrutinized and exemplified, and the historical trustworthiness of some details, which appear only in Chronicles, is examined in order to demonstrate that the book contains some potential reliable data.

The Aqedah story is a crown jewel of the biblical literature. Highlighting genuine emotions and important theological and ethical problems, it holds ground in all monotheistic religions. It brings about several questions concerning the mutual relationship between man and God, and man’s relationship with his son, wife and surroundings. Rabbinic literature provides plurality of perspectives on the Aqedah. It fills in gaps of the narrative and suggests directions o f interpretation that reflects in Josephus and perhaps in the Qumranic literature. Some interpretations are rooted in Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha literature, and many continue in the medieval Jewish interpretation. Usually the rabbis see God’s request as a test of Abraham’s unconditional belief. Some view the text as Abraham mistaking God’s intent. Others are justifying the placement of God and blaming Satan and Abraham. Several rabbis considered the Aqedah as an act of Kiddush Hashem (martyrdom). Abraham is viewed as one who is truly motivated by his religious belief over moral command, and his immediate acceptance of the command was praised. Many consider the Aqedah also as Isaac’s test. There are several approaches regarding what truly happened on the mount. However, Isaac’s blood cannot be viewed as a counterblast to Jesus’ blood. Sarah’s death was related with the Aqedah. Abraham’s act is considered to be an enduring eminence of Israel.

The article presents historical, literary, religious and political context in which interest in the poetry of the Baroque Neo-Latin poet Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (1595–1640) appeared in the first half of the 18th century among English dissenters and non-conformists. The article concentrates on the best known and most prolific of the six dissenting translators of Sarbiewski Isaac Watts (1674–1748) and his pupil and biographer Thomas Gibbons (1720–1785). The article includes a brief presentation of the translated poems of Sarbiewski and their translators.
Artykuł przedstawia historyczny, literacki, religijny i polityczny kontekst zainteresowania, jakim cieszyła siętwórczość Macieja Kazimierza Sarbiewskiego (1595–1640) wśród dysydentów i nonkonformistów w Anglii w I poł. XVIII w. Autor skupia się na najbardziej znanych i płodnych spośród sześciu dysydenckich tłumaczy Sarbiewskiego: Isaaku Wattsie (1674–1748) oraz jego wychowanku i biografiście Thomasie Gibbonsie (1720–1785). The first part of 1683 De optimo genere interpretandi sets the scene for Huet’s dialogue and introduces its participants: Isaac Casaubon (1559–1614) is comissioned to lay out his principles of translation, while Fronton du Duc (1558–1624) and Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553–1617) are meant to evaluate his views and ask questions regarding Casaubon’s theses. Casaubon’s lecture begins with a definition of interpretatio as sermo lingua notiore expressus, sermonem lingua minus nota expressum referens ac repraesentans (“a discourse in expressed in a better known language, referring to and representing a discourse in a lesser known language”), which is then followed by remarks separating interpretatio from such terms as aemulatio and paraphrasis. The speakers then discuss the principles of “the best kind of translation” in regard to Casaubon’s notion that the strict semantic, lexical and stylistic accuracy should be preffered by the translators over “appropriating” (convertere) the ancient authors to suit the tastes of the contemporaries. After those basic principles are given, Casaubon, de Thou and du Duc reflect on problems posed by the Casaubon’s approach to translation: mainly, the differences between particular languages, the lexical discrepancies and the difficulties regarding use of Casaubon’s method to different categories of texts (e.g. How important is it to represent the style of the original in the case of scientific texts?).
