International currency is a currency that is used outside the country as unit of account, medium of exchange, and means of accumulation. International currency performs the functions of money in an international dimension. The international role of the euro refers to the use of the euro in global markets and by residents of countries outside the euro area. Non-euro area residents may use the euro, for instance, in payment transactions or financial market transactions with euro area residents or with other non-residents. In particular, the euro is used by the official sector of several non-euro area countries as a reserve currency, as an anchor currency or as an intervention. This article reviews official use refers mainly to the euro's role in third countries' monetary and exchange rate policies, in the form of an anchor or reference currency, a reserve currency or an intervention currency(original abstract)

Internationalization of the yen may be defined as the increased usage and holding of the yen in international financial and commercial transactions (quantitative aspects of internationalization) or relaxation of rules concerning international transactions with the yen (qualitative aspects of internationalization). Although, the extent of internationalization of the yen is presently smaller than that ot the dollar or the Deutschmark with internationalization of the Japanese economy and Japan’s enhanced status in the world economy, requirements for the yen as an international currency to be used in investment and financing by non-residents are on the increase. The Japanese government changed its previous rather conservative stance -regarding the internalization of the yen and set out to implement various measures in order to relax the rules about the Jen funding by non-resident borrowers and develop the Tokyo Capital Market into an international financial center comparable to those of London or New York.

The subject of this paper is an analysis of the euro use in the functions of international currency in order to appraise the scope of its internationalisation. It turns out that the euro being the second key currency has not attained the position of a global currency so far. An assessment of the euro chances in competition with the dollar is difficult on account of growing doubts concerning the survival possibilities of monetary union. However, they depend on effective elimination of structural causes of the crisis and regaining confidence of financial markets.

The paper discusses the usage of the euro as a parallel currency in Poland. The domination of USD in the contemporary monetary system exposes global economy, and national economies as well, to the risk of external mbalances, asset bubbles or sudden changes in valuation of foreign exchange reserves. In these circumstances one of the most frequently discussed topics is the possibility of achieving by the renminbi (CNY) the status of international currency, which would allow it to substitute USD in global finance. The article presents the importance of CNY in international monetary system and highlights factors which may affect the road of CNY to the mentioned status.

The international position of a currency is directly determined by the scale and manner of fulfilment of classic currency functions in the international context. Creation of the Economic and Monetary Union and the introduction of a new currency (euro) – even though the decision was strictly political – was well-received by entities of contemporary international economy, including its main participants and the players on the international currency market. The reason for such a reception was the potential of the economies in the euro area, and also structural conditions and expectations for creation of an international currency that was to be a real alternative to the US dollar. The possibility of diversification in the investment and reserve spheres as well as in reference, intervention, transfer and invoicing spheres was considered as a step in the right direction to limiting the domination of the US dollar on the market. Notwithstanding the increasing problems in euro area in the fiscal sphere and the real economy, particularly with the job market, one may agree that the latest economic crisis did not change the bipolar character of the international monetary system still based on the US dollar and the euro. However, it needs to be stressed that the euro remains rather a regional than a global currency.

W artykule zaprezentowano problem wykorzystania walut międzynarodowych jako waluty przejścia (vehicle currency) ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem analizy czynników wspierających wzrost znaczenia tych walut w kontekście tej funkcji. Szczególny nacisk położono na analizę udziału najważniejszych walut międzynarodowego systemu monetarnego w transakcjach na rynku walutowym. Dominacja walut emitowanych przez największe gospodarki (Stany Zjednoczone, Unia Gospodarcza i Walutowa w Europie, Japonia) jako walut przejścia wynika bezpośrednio z ich roli jako walut międzynarodowych oraz ich znaczenia w transakcjach na rynkach walutowych. Podstawowe metody badawcze wykorzystane w artykule to studia literatury światowej oraz analiza danych statystycznych. Podstawowymi źródłami danych statystycznych były publikacje BIS i EBC.
The article presents the problem of using the international currency as a vehicle currency, with particular emphasis on the analysis of factors supporting the increase in importance of these currencies in the context of this function. Particular emphasis was placed on the analysis of the share of the most important currencies of the international monetary system in transactions on the foreign exchange market. The dominance of currencies issued by major economies (United States, Economic and Monetary Union in Europe, Japan) as transition currencies is directly attributable to their role as international currencies and their significance in FX transactions. The basic research methods used in the article are studies of world literature and statistical data analysis. The basic sources of statistical data were BIS and ECB publications.

Aim/purpose – The objectives of the paper include: identification of factors that influence the directions of fluctuations of foreign exchange rates seen as manifestations of currency wars; description of the most important forms of currency wars conducted in the contemporary global economy (including in particular the currently observed third currency war); analysis of risks to contemporary financial markets and national economies posed by the third currency war. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses the method of critical analysis of the literature on the subject, as well as US-China and Brazil case analyses. The Propensity Score Matching method was used in the study. Findings – The research findings confirmed the following hypotheses: contemporary fluctuations of foreign exchange rates in the largest economies of the world confirm that the third currency war is ongoing; the risk of consequences of the currency war destabilises the international and local financial markets and trade transactions among them. Research implications/limitations – The limited scope of the research performed is due to the fact that emerging economies have no control of devaluation or revaluation processes in their respective countries. However, large economies, such as China or Japan, are able to create the value of their respective currencies, thus artificially controlling the competitiveness of their products and services. These differences between small and large economies limit and distort the scope of the research done. Originality/value/contribution – Identification, analysis and results of the risks to contemporary financial markets and national economies posed by the third currency war.
