Opis:
Erasmus mobility is one of the most important manifestations of internationalization of education in Europe. The aim of the study is to ascertain the participants’ motives and the benefits coming from this international exchange of students as well as to diversify the results with regard to gender. The article, in its theoretical part, characterizes the concept of internationalization of education, describes the factors motivating for educational mobility, the benefits and the barriers of participation. The empirical part contains own researches carried out on a group of 125 students from Polish and foreign universities, using the CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) tool. It turns out that the main motivators to participate in student international education mobility is, among women, desire to travel as well as development of language skills. Men are mainly motivated by having fun and good time. Regardless of the research results it can be noticed that, generally, employers are more likely to decide to hire people who participated in and international student exchange, and the risk of long-term unemployment among graduates with international experience is lower by half than among graduates without such international experience. On the other hand, internationalization of education involves risks, including commercial profits, academic colonization and difficulties in providing high-quality education.

Opis:
The article sketches the structural and ideological changes taking place in the late XIXth century Galicia. Using the example of universities in Cracow and Lviv it asks how the language changes taking place between 1848 and 1918 can be understood from the background of the Empire-nationalism nexus and Habsburg political changes. In the first part the article challenges the predominant narrative about Germanization of Galician universities in the 1850s. After the liberal direct post-1848 period, the universities’ autonomy was limited and the government imposed loyal Polish scholars as university functionaries: Studiendirektor (i.e. supervisor of the university) and deans. Basing this research on archival documents, including the demand of the Academic Senate to introduce German as language of instruction, I claim that the practical issues outweigh here national zeal. The “Germanization” of the university cannot thus be seen as an political anti-national act, but as a means to improve scholarship in the imperial situation – especially since scholars, who demanded German as language of instruction, were not condemned after the university regained autonomy. The period of autonomous universities with the gradual spread of Polish as language of instruction, did not lead paradoxically to the previously feared national exclusionism. While language remained an important value for a career – limiting not only interacademic exchange in the Monarchy but also inhibiting several careers of Galician scholars – scholars were increasingly interested in publishing in languages other than Polish and scholarly exchange with other universities was intensified. Concentration on language issues was especially problematic in Polish-Ruthenian Eastern Galicia. The faculty of Lviv University – with Polish as language of instruction – was trying to limit Ruthenian influence. Especially after Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi was appointed professor of history, who in short time evolved to be a fierce critic of Polish domination, the conflict intensified, taking also violent form. Increasingly anti-Ruthenian stance of Polish professors and students, went hand in hand with Ruthenian demands, which included especially Ruthenian professorship of the nation-building disciplines (history, language and literature studies, anthropology, archeology). In comparison to the situation in 1853 in Cracow, it was the culture which the antagonists addressed, with scholarship regarded as an integral part of the national cultural development. In the last part the idea of “epistemic nationalism” is briefly explicated. With references to several disciplines, I show how pronounced interest in the nation can coincide with scholarly research, not only in human sciences but also in natural science and anthropology.

Opis:
International Pathfinders is a systematic study of the biographical significance of educational mobility within a European context. It builds upon autobiographical narrative material gathered through the EuroIdentities project. The study aims to combine the elements of social theory and the most recent research in the area of internationalisation of higher education with biographical material in order to understand and push the academic debate even further. This article employs a three-stage sequence of educational mobility – leaving home, the experience itself, and the return – as a core structure for discussing and presenting the cases. Within that framework, issues such as influence of cultural and symbolic capitals and specific characteristics of the educational structures of opportunities are explored. Biographical consequences of educational mobility take the form of an international frame of reference, allowing international students to navigate in complex international relations, and can be considered the source of social status both in an international and a national context.
Artykuł rozpatruje mobilność edukacyjną z punku widzenia jej sekwencyjnych stadiów – wyjazd, pobyt i powrót – co daje możliwość systematyzacji i prezentacji materiału biograficznego.

Opis:
This article aims to analyse the public financial support programmes for SME internationalisation available to Polish companies, with a view to identifying and potentially eliminating existing barriers. The three programmes under consideration are “Polish Tech Bridges,” “SME Internationalisation,” and “Go to Brand.” These programmes were evaluated based on certain criteria and then analysed for present barriers. The study was conducted via desk research of relevant project documentation, including the regulations. Each programme was compared across several aspects, which allowed the differences between them to be demonstrated. These aspects concerned support projects both at the stage of obtaining and implementing assistance and after project completion. The study revealed that these programmes are characterised by different – but not completely unique – advantages and disadvantages. Consequently, their appeal to companies varies depending on factors such as the company’s experience, location, or resources. Based on the identified disadvantages that constitute a barrier for SMEs to access finance, institutions could modify these programmes to enhance the accessibility of public support for SME internationalisation.
