Opis:
This paper presents the findings of a qualitative research project set to investigate the piloting process of an innovative language program for university students. It challenges traditional English language teaching courses celebrating a view centered on learning; classes become spaces for students to understand the language they are learning through the development of small projects. The approach moves from a teaching transmission paradigm to one where the most important agent is each student who has to engage with a topic of his or her interest. Students are seen as individuals whose knowledge and understanding of the world is valued and not as people whose lack of language skills prevents themfrom engaging in discussions of complex topics. The objective of this innovation is to enhance students’ understanding and use of academic English in their field of interest. In this project, we argue that knowledge and understanding of the mother tongue and culture play key roles in the development of a second language. A number of studies suggest that students who had strong first language literacy skills achieved higher proficiency levels in their second language. Based on this argument and Vygotsky’s sociocultural learning theory, we designed disciplinary content language learning workshops for first-degree students. The main tenet is that students can develop academic English given that they know about their discipline. Findings so far reveal the difficulty of students to take distance from their previous learning experiences. They also show that students’ ideas expressed in English are far more complex than what would be expected of them given their second language skills. The complexity is not only related to thecontent, but to the way they construct their paragraphs and the understanding of how the register of their field  may be used.

Opis:
In this article, its author offers the practical considerations of a philologist, a linguist, a translation-studies researcher, and an eager modern-language academic teacher, regarding a range of contemporary technological solutions/tools for enhancing the acquisition of a foreign language (English). In particular, the author refers to electronic pedagogical dictionaries – the monolingual Dictionary.com, the bilingual Wielojęzyczny słownik polskiOFFLINE, and the semibilingual Słownik angielskiegoDiki, which are presently commonly used by young language learners. Such smart-applications developed for smartphones and tablets – in the author’s view – are remarkable tools for enhancing the complex language teaching and learning process, but – on the other hand – they do require certain methodological training if they are to bring a range of didactic benefits to their users. As the author perceives this notion, such a training regarding the smart dictionary applications – the metalexicographic training – should become the integral part of the modern language teaching and learning process, which may serve as highly beneficial to both smart-users of electronic dictionaries and their smart-teachers alike.

Opis:
Intercultural competence is listed more and more commonly, along with language and communication competences, as one of main goals of language education. Why are intercultural competences a vital resource for the contemporary human? During enculturation and socialization processes we learn not only how to behave, but also how to perceive and comprehend the conduct of others. These rules of perception and interpretation are sort of M lters, through which a person looks at the world, interprets it and, basing on these interpretations, forms attitudes and undertakes actions. Given the importance of this resource, comprising elements of intercultural education might be seen as a significant element of foreign language teaching and learning. The article focuses on the theoretical framework and practical features of Teaching English in Poland Program (TEIP), which has been established as a response to the need of developing intercultural competences among children and adolescents under the age of 18. The programme has been manager by The Kosciuszko Foundation since 1991. Teaching English during camps in Poland, linked with experiencing cultural differences between Polish teachers and students and voluntary teachers from the United States brings children and adolescents, as well as Polish teachers, a chance to thrive crucial social skills and competences such as better understanding of other person when trying to empathize and conceive their situation as the „Other”, as well as to recognize similarities and differences to one’s own culture. Intercultural education accompanying TEIP demands not only to provide knowledge and skills about society and culture in which the language to be acquired is used, but also to develop competences which are essential to gain adequate, open mindset towards „otherness” and „differences”.

Opis:
This paper discusses two topics which are very popular nowadays among the academics dealing with foreign language teaching, namely: intercultural competence and pragmatic error. The author notes the fact that those two notions appear separately, because the starting points for discussing them are usually different fields of science. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that on one hand the two notions need to be treated uniformly, and on the other, that the pragmatic error should be included in error classifications which are references for both the authors of handbooks as well as people educating future teachers. For that purpose, the author defines intercultural competence, presents various approaches to error and its classification in teaching, and then explains what pragmatic error is and describes its linguistic characteristics.

Opis:
Learners of a second language often have limited access to the native culture of that language in an authentic way, resulting in them committing linguistic and intercultural mistakes. One of the main advantages of task-based learning is that it can expose students to real-world circumstances, which makes learning a language more meaningful and inclusive of appropriate language behaviour. Task-based learning has become an accepted method for learning a language in face-to-face classroom environments, but its applicability to online learning is largely unaddressed. The author proposed well-organised online role-plays based on a task-based approach involving native speakers, which helped students interact in an authentic way and demonstrate their understanding of culture. The author conducted the research to increase intercultural pragmatic competencies in online L2 classrooms regarding common pragmatic speech acts as to not only increase their pragmatic competency but to also motivate students. The students from the online experimental group who were exposed to task-supported role-plays performed better than the online control group of students; however, student motivation was only mildly impacted. Thus, pragmatics and interculturality can be effectively taught in online L2 classrooms through task-supported learning, though motivation may require longer interventions.

Teacher training needs to respond to the changing reality, making students better equipped to meet the challenges of teaching in multilingual and multicultural contexts. The traditional paradigm of teacher trainers, trainees and prospective students all sharing the same mother tongue and home culture is no longer valid. Thus, reflection on how to infuse intercultural teaching into the teacher training module is needed. One way to do that is to apply the model of telecollaborative training.

It demonstrates the combination of literature and film as a possibility for successful literary, language and media learning.

Emotions, both positive and negative, are part of our lives. However, until the 1960s, little attention was paid to the role they played in learning foreign languages. It all changed with the development of humanistic psychology, which focused, among others, on the integration of cognitive and affective teaching. Emotions also accompany encounters of individuals representing two different cultures. Intercultural communication is a complex process, which often involves culture shock, conflicts and various types of interpersonal relations. The aim of this paper is to accentuate the role of emotions in foreign language teaching. We will put forward several proposals concerning affective learning viewed from the perspective of intercultural communication. Finally, we will present the results of the study conducted among learners of Spanish, which illustrates the importance of affective factors in constructing students’ positive attitudes towards language and culture.
