Opis:
The chemical constituents and insecticidal activity of the pods of Senna italica (Caesalpiniaceae, Fabaceae) were investigated. From the chloroform extract of pods, physcion, chrysophanol, chrysophanol-10,10′-bianthrone, chrysophanol-physcion bianthrone and chrysophanol-isophyscion bianthrone, were isolated and characterized using different spectral methods. The GC-MS of the n-hexane extract revealed that the major chemical constituents of the oil were 2,6,-di-sec-butylphenol (36.69 %), di-n-octylphthalate (12.06 %), eicosane (5.46 %), tetratriacontane (4.87 %) and 2,2'-methylenebis[6-(1,1-dimethyl)-4-methylphenol (4.18 %). The n-hexane extract showed potent insecticidal activity (100 %) against Callosbruchus analis F. This study suggests that S. italica pods cannot be a source of sennosides but for other bioactive compounds.

Opis:
The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the major pest infesting stored grains world wide. Experiments were conducted to study the efficacies of D. regia oils on mortality and adult emergence of S. zeamais Motschulsky. The long time storage and viability of the treated maize grains were also investigated. Results obtained showed that D. regia oil at every concentration was lethal on S. zeamais. At 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% concentration, there was 100% mortality of S. zeamais at 96 h of exposure. The least potent extract was 0.5% concentration. The extracts drastically reduced adult emergence to 0.0% in grains treated with 1.5% and 2.0% oil extracts concentration. Grains treated with 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% D. regia seed oil completely prevented infestation and subsequence damage of the treated maize grains for a period of three Months. Thereafter, 20.04% damage was observed in grains treated with 0.5% oil extract. The oil extracts at all concentrations in this experiment hardly affected germination as there was no significant difference between percentage germination in the treated grains and the control. The results obtained reveal that oil extracts of D, regia seeds are effective in controlling S. zeamais and could serve as alternative to the controversial convectional chemical insecticides

Opis:
The insecticidal properties of essential oil derived via the hydro-distillation method from aerial parts of Artemisia judaica L. were tested against the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The repellent activity assay of essential oil against C. maculates adults indicated that in concentrations of 63.7, 31.9, 15.9, 8.0 or 4.0 μg/cm2, the oil reduced egg laying by 92.5, 86.0, 61.8, 42.7 and 12.5%, respectively. Also, the residual-film assay showed that after 72 hours of treatment, concentrations of 50 and 40% were highly effective against the C. maculates adults. The sub-lethal effects of essential oil were investigated on fecundity and F1 progany by exposing adult females to treated seeds. Both LC25 and LC50 of essential oil significantly reduced F1 progany production compared to the control. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS and the resulting oil piperitone (32.4%), camphor (20.6%) and (E)-ethyl cinnnamate (8.2%) were found to contain the major constituents of the oil. This provided the insecticidal properties of the essential oil against cowpea weevil.

Opis:
The Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, is a major pest of stored grain products, particularly flour. There have been major concerns over the application of conventional insecticides in stored products, which have strongly demonstrated the need for applying such alternative safe compounds as essential oils. The aim of the present study is to investigate the chemical composition and fumigant toxicity of essential oil from Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. against the eggs, larvae, and adults of E. kuehniella. All toxicity tests were carried out under laboratory conditions set at 26±1°C and 70% relative humidity (RH). The results of gas chromatography- -mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis indicated that the essential oil extracted from the leaves of Z. clinopodioides, is rich in pulegone (49.4%), piperitenone (10.7%), menthone (8.9%), and 1,8-cineol (6.9%). Based on the bioassay results, the LC50 value of the tested oil was estimated to be 54.61 μl · l–1 air for larvae and 1.39 μl · l–1 air for adults. Also, it is shown that increasing the oil concentration resulted in a significant increase in oviposition deterrency as well as a considerable reduction in the egg hatching percentage. These results suggest that Z. clinopodioides oil could be a potential candidate as a fumigant for managing E. kuehniella in stored products.

In continuation of our previous work, the current study explores an environmentally benign approach for the control of Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) using a synergistic combination of α,bT-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (1a-1e; 2a-2i) and the natural products, neem oil (N1) and nicotinic acid (N2). Our approach also evaluates the insecticidal activity of 3-(5-chloro-1,3-diaryl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1-arylprop-2-en-1-one(2j-2o) consisting of bioactive moieties, viz., chalcone and pyrazole, in a single molecular structure. Compounds 2l and 2o exhibited maximum activity with 58% and 50 % of mortality, respectively, under laboratory conditions. Among various test combinations, 2a-N2 showed maximum insecticidal activity, with 54% mortality, comparable to that of the most active newly synthesized compound, 2l, followed by 1c-N1 and 2g-N2 with 52% mortality. The compound 2a was also found to be non-toxic to potato tuber used as a plant substrate in the current investigation.

Opis:
5.8S ribosomal RNA plays an important role in protein synthesis and eukaryotic ribosome translocation. Contact DNA insecticides based on antisense fragments of 5.8S ribosomal RNA gene of gypsy moth Lymantria dispar L. showed prospective insecticidal activity on its larvae. The most pronounced insecticidal effect was found for antisense fragments 10 and 11 nucleotides long (oligoRIBO-10 and oligoRIBO-11), whereas 12 nucleotides long fragment (oligoRIBO-12) caused the lowest level of insect mortality. This data corresponds to results obtained earlier using rabbit reticulocyte and wheat germ extracts, where maximum inhibition of protein synthesis was observed when a relevant oligomer 10-11 nucleotides long was used, whilst longer chain lengths resulted in reduced inhibition. Using oligoRIBO-11 fragment we have shown penetration of antisense oligonucleotides to insect cells through insects’ exoskeletons. MALDI technique registered the penetration of the oligoRIBO-11 fragment into insect cells after 30 min and a significant response of insect cells to the applied oligonucleotide after 60 min, which indicates not only that the oligonucleotide enters the insect cells, but also the synthesis of new substances in response to the applied DNA fragment. Contact DNA insecticides developed from the L. dispar 5.8S ribosomal RNA gene provide a novel biotechnology for plant protection using unmodified antisense oligonucleotides.

Mirystycyna syntetyczna wykazała dużą aktywność owadobójczą w stosunku do badanych bioindykatorów. Wyodrębnione z nasion i liści pietruszki próbki mirystycyny „naturalnej” okazały się mniej aktywne biologicznie.
This study was conducted to investigate and compare biological activity of synthetic myristicin and myristicin isolated from a plant material. The source of „natural” myristicin were seeds and leaves of parsley variety Berliner Half-Long. Biological tests of insecticidal efficiency of synthetic and natural myristicin were conducted against housefly (Musca domestica L) and oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis). Synthetic myristicin was found more active as insecticide against tested bio-indicators. The biological efficiency of natural myristicin obtained from parsley seeds and leaves was much lower.

The objective of current study was to determine the chemical constituents and fumigant toxicity of essential oil isolated by hydro-distillation from dry fruit of bitter fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller). The chemical composition of the essential oil was assessed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Constituents of the oil were determined as α-pinene (1.6%) and limonene (3.3%), fenchone (27.3%), estragol (3.9%), and (E)-anethole (61.1%). The fumigant toxicity of the essential oil was tested on larvae of the stored product insect Trogoderma granarium Everts. The mortality of larvae was tested at different concentrations ranging from 31.2 to 531.2 μl/l air and at different exposure times (24 and 48 h). Probit analysis showed that LC50 and LC90 following a 48 h-exposure period for essential oil were 38.4 and 84.6 μl/l, respectively. These results showed that the essential oil from F. vulgare may be applicable to the management of populations of stored-product insects.
