Opis:: The paper presents the theoretical basis and practical implementation of the concept of a five-stroke cycle where an additional expansion of the working medium is achieved in a separate cylinder. The work, carried out at the Cracow University of Technology, constitutes a development of the idea of five-stroke engine. This paper proposes a new theoretical thermodynamic cycle that describes the processes occurring in a five-stroke engine. It has been taken into consideration that the expansion ratio of the engine is twice the compression ratio. At the next step an analysis of the thermodynamic cycle with particular emphasis on its thermal efficiency compared to efficiency of four-stroke engine has been shown. In the second part of the article selected research results of the five-stroke engine built based on the existing four-cylinder spark ignition engine have been presented. A comparison of the total efficiency obtained by the engine in the four- and five-stroke version has been provided. Similar comparisons for specific emission of the selected exhaust components have also been given.

Opis:: Nowadays there is a large assortment of metal fittings for light industry products: grommets, shoe blades and hooks, buttons, rivets, jeans buttons, etc. Qualitative installation of metal fittings in light industry products is a significant problem and depends on various factors. Therefore, theoretical and experimental researches in this field are important and relevant nowadays. The most popular types of metal fittings used in the sewing, footwear, leather and haberdashery industries are blocks and grommets. While grommets installing in a traditional way, unreasonable losses between the two operations occur. One of the ways to increase labor productivity is to combine the technological operations of holes punching in the grommets and their fastening in the material. This installation method can be applied to fittings which have a cylindrical hollow shape and a sharp incisive edge. To investigate the operation of metal grommets installation in light industry products, an experimental installation was developed and experimental studies were carried out. The experimental studies confirmed the possibility of utilization of the grommet cutting edge as a working tool for the punch, which in turn allowed the punching and fitting operation to be combined, reduce the number of working tools, and increase the productivity of the equipment.
Obecnie istnieje duży asortyment metalowych dodatków odzieżowych dla przemysłu lekkiego: oczka, klamry do butów, guziki, nity itp. Jakościowa instalacja metalowych kształtek w produktach przemysłu lekkiego jest poważnym problemem i zależy od różnych czynników. Dlatego teoretyczne i eksperymentalne badania w tej dziedzinie są ważne i aktualne w dzisiejszych czasach. Najpopularniejszymi rodzajami metalowych dodatków stosowanych w przemyśle krawieckim, obuwniczym, skórzanym i galanteryjnym są oczka metalowe i zapięcia. Podczas instalowania tych elementów w tradycyjny sposób dochodzi do nieuzasadnionych strat czasowych pomiędzy tymi operacjami. Jednym ze sposobów zwiększenia wydajności pracy jest połączenie operacji technologicznych wykrawania otworów w pierścieniach i ich mocowania w materiale. Tę metodę instalacji można zastosować do kształtek o cylindrycznej formie i ostrych krawędziach. Aby zbadać działanie instalacji metalowych pierścieni w produktach przemysłu lekkiego, opracowano metodę instalacji i przeprowadzono badania eksperymentalne. Badania eksperymentalne potwierdziły możliwość wykorzystania krawędzi tnącej oczka metalowego jako narzędzia roboczego dla stempla, co z kolei pozwoliło połączyć operacje wykrawania i montażu, zmniejszyć liczbę narzędzi roboczych i zwiększyć wydajność.

Opis:: The paper describes design of the five-stroke engine developed in the Chair of Combustion Engines at Cracow University of Technology. The idea of five-stroke engine, in which the expansion ratio is significantly greater than the compression ratio has been presented by the Belgian engineer Gerhard Schmitz. The prototype of such an engine was made by Ilmor Engineering. Engine developers have released results of preliminary research, but there is no detailed information on the toxic exhaust emissions. For this reason, at Cracow University of Technology the research was undertaken to determine the impact of implementing the five-stroke cycle into the engine with spark ignition to reduce toxic emissions and increase total efficiency. To achieve this goal, the test engine was built, which is based on a concept similar to the idea of Gerhard Schmitz, with the difference that it has not been designed from the ground up, and it is based on an existing four-cylinder four-stroke engine. In comparison with the original solution, the engine built in Cracow has a completely different design of timing system, four valves per cylinder and petrol direct injection. This paper presents a detailed description of the engine design and the results of its preliminary research. The results of the tests of the five-stroke engine confirm an increase of specific torque and power (related to unit of engine displacement) and improve of total efficiency within a certain range of the engine map.

Opis:: This research work is devoted to the theoretical study of the pipe calibration on a mandrel. The aim of the study is to improve the precision of the calibrated pipes. As the paper shows, it is advisable to apply different methods of research depending on the purpose of the study of metal forming processes: mathematical, computer or physical simulation. Analytical review of existing mathematical models of the pipes calibration on a mandrel showed that the set of assumptions adopted in the mathematical modeling does not allow assessing the precision of the pipes during calibration. Therefore, finite-element method simulation package was used for this research. Research method and pipes precision index were developed on the basis of the computer simulation using Deform-3D package. The investigations have allowed us to get the dependence of the pipe precision on technological factors and to identify the root cause of reduced efficiency calibration – extrafocal deformation.

Opis:: The paper presents the results of investigations performed on a combustion engine with Atkinson cycle included and application of variable valve timing. Investigations were carried out at constant rotational speed 2500 and 3500 RPM and at throttle opening 25% and 50%. Influence of the advance/delay angle of inlet valves closing on formation of exhaust gases toxic components such as: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitric oxides was presented. Basing on the obtained results difference of toxicity of exhaust gases before and after application of phase shifter and their concentration in places of total efficiency increments was demonstrated. Especially The Atkinson cycle comparing with conventional Otto cycle, characteristics of the electric motor applied in Toyota Prius generation, starting and work of engines (combustion engine and electric motor) during vehicle standstill, relation of specific fuel consumption in function of rotational speed for a Toyota Prius engine, generation II, in total efficiency of engines with Atkinson cycle and Mitsubishi GDI in function of rotational speed, relative increase in total efficiency as rotational speed function, influence of intake valves opening angle on concentration in exhaust gases: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitric oxides at diferrent throttle opening values are presented in the paper.
