The article analyzes the letters by Hryhoriy Skovoroda, which are a striking example of the epistolary genre of his time. These texts show the development of Skovoroda’s philosophy in the sphere of everyday life practices. These works were the first to announce and develop the important moral and ethical categories of his science, formulating and testing the leading concepts of Skovoroda’s philosophical system. It’s possible to trace the peculiarities of Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s temperament through his epistolary. This method creates the effect of the living presence of the author, because of the researched philosopher’s letters. The analysis of his letters to friends of different stages of the philosopher’s life testifies to the openness and immutability of his existential principles. The style of Skovoroda’s epistolary has not undergone significant changes for several decades. It is marked by shining Baroque metaphors, wits and aphorisms, imaginary dialogue with the recipient and thinkers of different eras. They also have a noticeable tendency to combine philosophical content with a travesty form, sincerity and respect for the recipients.

Opis:
Globalization raises questions about the prospects for the existence of the monarchical form of government. This is due to the fact that it is considered a historical anachronism, which eventually must disappear completely. Thus, in the 50's and 70's of the 20th century, there was series of coups and revolutions that led to the elimination of more than 10 monarchies. However, to date, the monarchies are more than a quarter of currently existing countries - 44. This situation is evidence of the fact that this form of government, despite its traditional character, able to adapt political present. In this context, the question naturally arises: why in some monarchies there is a political modernization, and in others it is not. This article aims to find out the experience of introducing the control function of parliament in former monarchies, which will allow understanding the reasons for their overthrow and reveal the peculiarities of the nature of the passing of a similar process in the existing monarchies. The article is based on the establishment of constitutionally fixed forms of legislative control over the executive in such former monarchies as Afghanistan, Burundi, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Laos and Libya. First of all, we should pay attention to such elements of the constitutional status of the monarch as inviolability and irresponsibility. It`s assurance depends not only on the formal consolidation of the two above-mentioned components. An important role is played by the real place of the monarch in the system of supreme bodies of state power. Paying attention to this fact reveals the level of implementation of the control function of parliament and assesses the efficacy or fictitiousness of certain forms. The author believes that the establishment of parliamentary control over the investigated monarchies has been fictitious and somewhat even decorative. This case was conditioned by the concentration of significant constituent powers in the hands of the head of state, which allowed exerting pressure on the parliament, which made it impossible or significantly reduced the probability of the implementation of one or another form of legislative control over the executive. The monarch actually or even legally was the head of the executive, but in none of these states, except Laos, he has no responsibility for the exercise of his powers. The result was the imbalance in the system of relations between the supreme bodies of state power in favor of the monarch. The establishment of the control function of the parliament actually led to the establishment of an imaginary constitutionalism in these states. The political modernization of investigated monarchies stopped solely within these limits, without receiving a continuation in the form of a full-fledged institution of political responsibility of the head of state. Therefore, the superficial and intrusive nature of political transformations, caused by the centralization of power, has become the main reason for the overthrow of the monarchy in analyzing countries. Of course, in the context of the transition of analyzing states into republic, we should take into account a number of other factors. But, first of all, the overthrow of the monarchy was due imaginary character of political modernization. The institute of monarchy remained deeply traditional and it could not function as the center of modernization processes. This is confirmed by the fact that after the military coups and revolutions in analyzing countries, the process of political modernization continued. The failure of establishment of the parliamentary control function in the former monarchies of Asia and Africa should be taken into account by some existing monarchies, such as Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait. In these states, there is also the gradual establishment of imaginary constitutionalism. The imbalance in the system of relations between the supreme bodies of state power, which gives rise to the above-mentioned phenomenon, has become one of the reasons for the "Arab Spring" in all, without exception, the Arab monarchies. Therefore, the thought of the Soviet scientist S. Kaminsky about the historical condemnation of this form of state government seems indisputable. But the author believes that, first of all, the fictitious nature of the establishment of the control function of parliament in the former monarchies of Asia and Africa led to the overthrow of them. Therefore, in order to prevent the repetition of military coups and revolutions in the existing monarchies, this problem needs further investigation.

This article deals with the images of Slavic cultural space in north-western Europe presented in Stanislaw Pestka’s works written in the Kashubian language. His poetic descriptions, reflect the profound relations between Kashubian tradition and north-western Slavic culture. They mainly present the struggle for cultural identity, similar in both cultures. In contemporary Europe, both Kashubs and Polabs are minorities facing the threat of extinction, subjected to numerous factors of acculturation and assimilation. The only chance for the salvation of the Kashubs is to counteract the cultural processes which resulted in the cultural dependence of the Slavic inhabitants of Lusatia, Mecklenburg and Pomerania on militarily and economically stronger neighbours.

The starting point of this article is an attempt to prove the authenticity of the essential catchword of Julia Fiedorczuk’s ecocriticis, that “with the environmental crisis comes a crisis of the imagination” (citation from Lawrence Buell). In this article, the concept of disaster functions in an ecocritical practice is analysed and how we can avert anthropocentric and deleterious ways of thinking. An important context here is Timothy Morton’s concept of ecomimesis texts and more ecological, ambient poetics, where text reflects real processes which depart from the concept of imaginary nature. Specifically, this paper proves that in the latest poetry volume written by Urszula Zajączkowska, using the example of the volume Piach (2020), that firstly, the anthropocentric view of nature (which underlines the concept of ecomimesis) is abandoned, which, the imagined and servant, is far removed from the actual processes existing in the world. Secondly, the analysis and interpretation of selected texts in the poems confirms that the poetry exhibits a special sensitivity to changes and processes. In turn, this enables us to comprehend the effects of human actions. For this reason, the reader can exercise and practice his imagination, which is helped by the auratic poetics used. These activities facilitate a better understanding of the effects of human activities. Urszula Zajączkowska poetry’s prompts us to imagine how the materiality of the world works in practise and how these tiny atoms created the whole world. Also, this poetry fosters a way of thinking that assumes particular significance in the context of ongoing climate change, without necessarily aspiring for the currently popular apocalyptic themes.

W artykule omówiono opublikowany niedawno polski przekład pierwszego tomu Muzeum. Historii światowej Krzysztofa Pomiana, sytuując go w kontekście dotychczasowych badań tego autora nad relacjami człowieka z czasem i z przedmiotami. Przywołano Pomianowskie ustalenia dotyczące wpływu kultury materialnej na wyobraźnię społeczeństw oraz refleksję nad historią jako dyscypliną wiedzy. Na tym tle przedstawiono najważniejsze tezy Pomiana dotyczące natury kolekcjonowania, a więc pojmowanie kolekcji jako miejsca, w którym symboliczne sensy przedmiotów są tworzone i pomnażane, stanowiąc unikatowe sposoby konceptualizacji i wizualizacji niewidzialnego. W artykule wskazano także te punkty w dziejach kolekcjonerstwa, które stanowią o przejściu od kolekcji prywatnej do publicznego, świeckiego muzeum, a więc historię zbiorów kapitolińskich w Rzymie i florenckiej galerii Uffizi. Zaakcentowana została zmiana, polegająca na przejściu zbiorów z rąk jednostek na własność osób prawnych, a więc ciał politycznych, a tym samym przeorientowanie kolekcji z przeszłości na przyszłość.
The article discusses the recently published Polish translation of the first volume of Le Musée, une histoire mondiale by Krzysztof Pomian, placing it in the context of Pomian’s previous research on human beings’ relationship with time and objects. The essay recalls Pomian’s insights into the influence of material culture on the imagination of societies and his reflections on history as a discipline of knowledge. In this context, Pomian’s main theses on the nature of collecting are discussed, that is, the understanding of a collection as a place where the symbolic meanings of objects are created and multiplied, constituting unique ways of conceptualising and visualising the invisible. The essay also discusses the points in the history of collecting that mark the transition from a private collection to a public, secular museum, namely the history of the Capitoline collection in Rome and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It emphasises the shift inherent in the transition of collections from the hands of individuals to the ownership by legal entities and thus political bodies, thereby reorienting collections from the past to the present.

The article is devoted to the semantic and composition functions of the figure of a park/garden in Raymond Roussel’s novel Locus Solus. The issue discussed in this paper concerns a pretextual function of fictional space for the narration mode and sequential order of the novel. An attempt is made to supplement the dominant structuralist tradition of interpreting Roussel’s work, for example, with the concepts appearing in Maria Gołaszewska’s eco-aesthetic approach and Arnold Berleant’s environmental aesthetics. The proposed direction of reflections allows us to see in the rhetorical aspects of Roussel’s style, among which numerous hyperboles particularly attract the reader’s attention, a narrative method of anthropologically understood imaginary structures. These structures were based on the systems of objects, whose task, apart from rhetorical and cultural deluding, governed by the poetics of absurd, is to determine an anthropological point of observation in the very problem of visual experience connected with the walk in the park, intended by Roussel as an integral element of the plot. The article points out that the main problem of the novel is garden space seen from the perspective of visual anthropology, with the cultural pattern of an imaginary structure determined by the space. This space is given the function of disinterested narrating. According to the author of the proposed analyses, the meaning of such an understood visual metaphor is carried by two primary figures inscribed in the space of the garden: anamorphosis and ornament.

Artykuł stanowi kontynuację serii prezentującej efekty badań naukowo-artystycznych dotyczących odczytywania przestrzeni dostrzeżonych w naturze. Teoretyczne rozważania przedstawione w poprzednich numerach zostały przeniesione na działania twórcze – projekty architektury wnętrz wcielające zasady biofilii, które powstały w wyniku zastosowania trzech metod intertekstualnej interpretacji natury: naśladowania formy (nawiązania do wyglądu zewnętrznego), naśladowania zasady działania oraz zaprzeczenia (jednoczesnego nawiązania i podważenia cech immanentnych obiektowi inspiracji). Zaprezentowana została droga projektowa uwzględniająca różne środki artystyczne. Przestrzenie odnalezione w krajobrazie stanowią instalacje, które mogą stać się podstawą projektu architektury wnętrza mieszkalnego, jak również użytkowego.
The article is a continuation of a series presenting the results of scientific and artistic research on the reading of spaces perceived in nature. The theoretical considerations expounded in the previous issues have been transferred to creative activities: interior design incorporating the principles of biophilia, which resulted from the application of three methods of intertextual interpretation of nature: imitation of the form (alluding to the external appearance), mimicking of the principle of operation, and negation (alluding to immanent features of the object of inspiration and undermining them at the same time). A design path encompassing various artistic means is presented. The spaces found in the landscape are installations that can become the basis for the design of residential and utility interior architecture.

The paper is devoted to the concept of tropological space, introduced by Michel Foucault in 1966 and alluded to in Hayden White’s tropics of discourse (1973, 1978, 2000), but never described in any detail in literary semantics or linguistic stylistics. The author presents her theory of a triple functional subdivision of stylistic figures and, consequently, of tropes (micro-, macro- and mega (meta)-level of description) and relates it to a gradually expanding tropological space of particular figures, their chains and groupings within a text. The author postulates that tropological space, the imaginary space created through figuration, is a sub-space of the Wittgensteinian logical space as well as a sub-space of textual / discursive space. Although the discussion refers mostly to literary texts, tropology – a branch of stylistics / poetics / rhetoric makes generalizations valid for the study of all kinds of texts / discourses. Figuration is assumed here to be an inherent feature of conceptual and linguistic expression. Finally, the author raises a methodological query as to the ontological status of tropological space, opting for the approach which treats it as a peculiar kind of semantic space rather than a mere metaphoric term. The discussion is based mostly on the Anglo-American studies on figuration (K. Burke, H. White, P. de Man, J. Hillis Miller, G. Hartman) that are rooted in the neo-classical rhetoric and writings of G. Vico. This line of thinking draws its philosophical inspiration from the European hermeneutics of P. Ricoeur, the Foucaultian theory of discourses and the Derridean deconstructionist ideas on the operation of language. The author brings additionally into consideration the conception of artistic space propagated by the Russian semiotic tradition and V. N. Toporov (1983/2003) in particular.

The author reads Czesław Miłosz’s novel The Issa Valley through the prism of myth criticism, which was introduced to the humanities by Gilbert Durand. In particular, she focuses on the palingenesis of literary mythemes and the transposition of myth cal structures which can be found in various aspects of the text, including the novel’s chronotope and character construction. Moreover, The Issa Valley features processed paradigms of mythical time, mythical models of space, and individual mythemes transformed by Miłosz’s imaginary. The writer semantically inverts or demythologizes the myths of Tellus Mater, Pammetor Ge, and Arcadia, the mythologem of childhood, and the mythologem of family home, which have been deeply rooted in tradition. Miłosz addresses the given problem in an antithetical manner. He avoids simple answers. Instead, he poses questions, and thus opens the text to the individual hermeneutics of symbolic paths. Miłosz perceived the imaginary that has symbolic and mythical foundations as endowed with redemptive potential. In myth criticism, the symbolic modelling that takes place in the artistic imaginary is closely connected with the therapeutic role of an image. It helps an individual regain the state of internal balance which Gilbert Durand defines as anthropological balance. And, as Ernst Cassirer posits, this balance is a manifestation of human symbolic intelligence.

Topic of entrance and exit sequences in Charles Sorel’s Description de l’isle de Portraiture (1659) and Mlle de Montpensier’s La Relation de l’Ile imaginaire (1659) The geographical production of the utopian island is paralleled by a number of textual mechanisms described by Jean-Michel Racault as topic of entrance and exit sequences. The close generic resemblance between French seventeenth century utopian and allegorical narratives of imagined islands, allows to ask about their topic similarity. The review of some of those sequences contained in Mademoiselle’s de Montpensier La Relation de l’Ile imaginaire and Charles Sorel La Description de l’isle de Portraiture, both published in 1659, shows however that they are an optional author’s choice and not a required narrative component.

1. Introduction. Let Q be a positive definite n × n matrix with integral entries and even diagonal entries. It is well known that the theta function
$ϑ_Q(z) := ∑_{g ∈ ℤ^n} exp{πi{^tg}Qgz}$, Im z > 0,
is a modular form of weight n/2 on $Γ_0(N)$, where N is the level of Q, i.e. $NQ^{-1}$ is integral and $NQ^{-1}$ has even diagonal entries. This was proved by Schoeneberg [5] for even n and by Pfetzer [3] for odd n. Shimura [6] uses the Poisson summation formula to generalize their results for arbitrary n and he also computes the theta multiplier explicitly. Stark [8] gives a different proof by converting $ϑ_Q(z)$ into a symplectic theta function and then using the transformation formula for the symplectic theta function. In [4], we apply Stark's method and use theta functions of indefinite quadratic forms to construct modular forms over totally real number fields. In this paper, we define theta functions attached to quadratic forms over imaginary quadratic fields. We show that these theta functions are modular forms of weight n/2 on some $Γ_0$ groups by regarding them as symplectic theta functions and then applying well known results for symplectic theta functions. In particular, the main result of [8] allows us to compute the theta multiplier for our theta functions in a very elegant way.

In this essay, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange refutes Kantian and occasionalist notions of sensation that have been smuggled into Thomism and Catholic thought. He maintains that sensation by its very nature requires an object that is sensed, since sensation without a sensible object is no sensation at all. To defend this position, he draws upon Aristotle, St. Thomas, and the Thomistic Commentators, arguing that the opposite position not only denies the distinctions between hallucination and sensation, bodily vision and imaginary vision, but also ultimately denies that the metaphysical certitude of the first principles of reason are materially resolved in that which is sensed.

In deutschen Medien erscheinen häufig Berichte über das polnische Theater von deutschen oder polnischen Journalisten und Kritikern. Sie vermitteln nicht nur ein bestimmtes Bild von der Ästhetik des polnischen Theaters, sondern auch von der polnischen Gesellschaft. Ziel des Artikels ist es zu untersuchen, welche Schwankungen und Veränderungen es in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten bezüglich der Imaginarien vom polnischen Theater in Deutschland gegeben hat. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Fachpresse und auf Portalen für Theaterveranstaltungen. Die Leitfrage lautet, ob sich die deutsche Vision vom polnischen Theater auf dessen aktuellen künstlerischen Zustand, auf die Analyse seines Charakters und das Streben nach Innovation bezieht. Zugleich wird gefragt, inwiefern dieses Bild durch kommerzielle, gesellschaftlich und politisch geprägte Motivationen bestimmt wird.
W niemieckich mediach obecne są relacje z polskich teatrów, tworzone przez niemieckich, czy też polskich dziennikarzy i krytyków. Buduje to pewien obraz nie tylko estetyki polskiego teatru, ale także swoiste imaginarium polskiego społeczeństwa. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie fluktuacji i zmian obrazu polskiego teatru w Niemczech w ciągu ostatnich dwóch dekad, tworzonego głównie przez prasę fachową i portale poświęcone wydarzeniom teatralnym. Zasadnicze pytanie brzmi, czy wizja polskiego teatru odnosi się do jego aktualnej kondycji artystycznej, analizy jego charakteru i poszukiwania innowacji oraz na ile jest to relacja uwarunkowana komercyjną sprzedażą informacji, często determinowaną przez niemiecką wizję społecznej roli teatru, czy też sytuacją polityczną.
Performances of Polish theatre are present in German media and are described by German or Polish journalists and critics, which builds a certain image not only of the aesthetics of Polish theatre but also of the imagination of Polish society. The aim of this article is to show the fluctuations and changes in the image of Polish theatre in Germany, in the last two decades, created by mainly professional press and portals devoted to theatre events. The problem is whether the vision of Polish theatre relates to its current artistic condition, the analysis of its character, the search for innovation, and to what extent is it a relationship conditioned by the commercial sale of information, often determined by the German vision of the social role of theatre, or the political situation.

The symbolic imaginary of counterculture was fostered by dissent towards the cultural roots of the Western world, by a challenge to traditional norms, values and symbols, and by the rejection of historical identity and national sovereignty. This article aims to discuss some of the aftermaths of the counterculture of the 1960s as resulting from the transformations of its symbolic imaginary. The transformation of the symbolic imaginary of the counterculture is reflected in specific historical changes which had a profound impact on social relations, manners of perceiving or experiencing the world, and the shape of the public sphere within modern society. The dissent of the 1960s is framed in terms of its ability to take over and impose symbolic power, along with transformations of a given cultural model, a process which has roots in the concept of historicity and a new symbolic universe. Special attention is given to the institutionalization of multiculturalism, one of the most important outcomes of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary of counterculture and the normalization of countercultural radicalism. The aftermaths of the radicalism of the 1960s, when presented against the background of the transformation of the symbolic imaginary, underscore a ubiquitous and profound transformation of the entire culture and ideological dynamics in Western societies.
