In an age when the global dissemination of digital information is transforming the way we read and write by foregrounding the interdependence of visual/verbal elements and languages, the reconstruction of identity and history in digital environments challenges binary translation processes. From this perspective, we interrogate the integration of visual and verbal elements in three Wikipedia articles, written in Polish, English, and Portuguese, about the topic “Polish death camp”. What is the role of translation in the semiotic construction of historical discourses in these articles? What are the conflicts generated by translated denominations? How do Wikipedia communities engage with the production of these cognitiverepresentations? This paper attempts to answer these questions.

Narrative developments often stem from images in Dany Laferrière’s work. On the other hand, some of the narration in Laferrière’s fiction and nonfiction is synthesized in narrative snapshots that resemble descriptions. Temporal dimension plays a key role in this constant shift between image and imagination, because, as Didi-Huberman has shown, images carry an anachronistic element. This element also allows Laferrière and his narrators to use mainly simple present tense, even when the content of the narration is set in the past. Nevertheless, images are never explained or rationalized in Laferrière’s work, which keeps the mystery and ambiguity that characterize visual representations.

Opis:
Noise removal in IR (Infra Red) images is very popular in recent years, however the same approach is utilized as for vision images, with no or minor changes. In this work we wanted to show the results of noise removal for selected filters. We focused on investigation of some filters normally used for image processing and their influence to IR image quality. In IR imaging the choice of filter depends mainly on the purpose of the processing, e.g. detection of small objects in complex images, edge and contour detection or removal of non-uniformity of the detector array. The performance of the selected noise reduction filters was evaluated using PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) quality measure, greater value of the PSNR and lower value of the MAE indicate better noise reduction. The results are shown only for few images from our database which contain over 2000 of IR images.

Contemporary socio-cultural transformations of family life can be observed in the area of non-specialist parental discourse in terms of both modern parenthood and the celebration of childhood. The new quality in the experience and creation of parenthood is noticeable especially in the communication performed with the help of Web 2.0 tools (which are currently among the most important platforms for the exchange of particularly valued “unscientific” – experience, because it is based on empirical knowledge). Internet messages (entries, posts, comments) create an involved parenting and glorify a small child as a subject of parental efforts in the context of post-hierarchical relationships, but they also serve to profile communities gathered around a superior idea or topic (e.g. eco-mum, modern mother, fitmum, dad in the city, dad at work, etc.). They also endorse the principle of the aestheticisation of everyday life, the messages are filled with linguistic humour and expose a non-standard way of thinking, matching perfectly the main trends of postmodern communication.

W pracy przedstawiono algorytm stabilizacji obrazów badanego obiektu poprzez transformacje sekwencji obrazów zarejestrowanych w świetle widzialnym. Zaprezentowano koncepcję, w jaki sposób wykorzystać uzyskane dane transformacji do korekty i stabilizacji rejestrowanych synchronicznie sekwencji obrazów podczerwieni, w celu poprawy dokładności i efektywności metody aktywnej termografii dynamicznej (ADT). Procedura ta jest szczególnie istotna w badaniach termograficznych przy obserwacji bijącego serca w trakcie interwencji kardiochirurgicznych, ale generalnie pozwala na wyraźną poprawę jakości danych ADT w diagnostyce medycznej.
Algorithm of tested object visual image stabilization via transformation of image sequences is shown with the aim of image matching. A concept how to use the transformation data for correction and matching of IR-thermal images in active dynamic thermography (ADT) is presented. The procedure improves significantly accuracy and efficiency of ADT measurements. The method is especially important for observation of the beating heart during cardiosurgery interventions, but is of general use in ADT medical diagnostics.

La dimension connotative de l'image réside dans la force sémiotique des différents types de signes qui la composent (iconiques, plastiques, linguistiques, etc.) et surtout dans leur interaction. C’est sur les images seulement parfois que s'arrête un enfant même quand il sait lire, l’image peut devenir un outil permettant de sensibiliser les enfants aux divers enjeux du langage dans ses différentes formes. Certains enfants sont à leur aise en parlant de ce qu’ils voient, d’autres ont besoin de passer par des images. Notre approche donne un rôle fondamental à l’interaction pour l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère, en essayant de répondre à la question suivante: Un apprentissage par l’image permet-il le développement des compétences langagières chez l’enfant ? Le choix d’une évaluation reposant sur les travaux de la psycholinguistique qui consistent à décrire divers aspects du fonctionnement langagier des enfants de 8 à 9 ans. Elle est organisée sur deux axes: compréhension et production. Les résultats obtenus nous ont permis de mettre en avant les principales compétences pouvant être développées par un travail sur et par l’image chez les apprenants Algériens.
The connotative dimension of the image lies in the semiotic force of the various types of signs which compose it (iconic, plastic, linguistics, etc.), especially in their interaction. It is on the images only that stops a child, sometimes, even when he knows how to read. The image may become a tool making the children aware of the various challenges of the language in its various forms. Some children are at ease while speaking about what they see, however others need to pass by images. Our approach gives a fundamental role to the interaction in the process of learning a foreign language, in trying to answer the following questions: Does a learning based on image allow the development of language competences of the child? The choice of an evaluation relies on work of psycholinguistics, which consists in describing various aspects of 8–9 years old children’s language functioning. It is organized on two axes: comprehension and production. The results obtained allowed us to bring to light the main competences that can be developed through a work on, and by, the image among Algerian learners.

The aim of this study was to investigate four sources of implied motion in static images (a moving object as the source of implied motion, hand movements of the image creator as the source of implied motion, past experiences of the observer as the source of implied motion, and fictive movement of a point across an image as the source of implied motion). In the experiment of the study, participants orally described 16 static images that appeared on the screen of a computer. The aim was to find whether participants had used any motion-related word to describe each image. It was assumed that using motion-related words to describe a static image was an indication that the image had created a sense of motion for the observer. These results indicated that all four types of implied motion could create a significant sense of motion for the observer. Based on these results, it is suggested that observing these images could lead to simulating the actions involved in those motion events and the activation of the motor system. Finally, it is proposed that the three characteristics of being rule-based (clearly-defined), continuous, and gradual are critical in perceiving that image as a fictive motion.

The implementation of a database management system in a clinical open-architecture picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is discussed. Standardization of communication protocols and file formats permit the equipment of various vendors to be linked. The main functions of the database management system are introduced at two levels of the system. Clinical experiences show three main advantages which are causing increasing interest in this concept. Access time, computer-assisted diagnosis and cost-effectiveness are the parameters describing the the system's efficiency.

The aim of this paper is to propose a new quality index which measures the distance between a reference (source) image and its corrupted copy in the way as Human Visual System (HVS) does. The new quality index called the Mean Weighted Quality Index (MW) is defined with the help of the well known easy calculated indexes. In this paper, I will argue that awareness of images and metaphors held by foreign language learners about the nature of the target language and its learning can be of substantial value and provide teaching practitioners with useful insights about how to deal with various language learning problems. To elicit images which learners hold about foreign language learning, a questionnaire was given to 350 learners of English in different places in Iran. The questionnaire asked the respondents to provide images about learning a foreign language by using a sentence completion task: “Learning a foreign language is like . . .” The responses gained in 200 questionnaires were content-analyzed and the identified images and metaphors were summarized under more broad-ranging categories. The information that the metaphors and the resulting metaphorical categories provide and the theoretical interpretations which can plausibly be made are discussed in some detail and put in a cognitive-psychological perspective.

Obraz morskiego radaru nawigacyjnego może być podstawą perspektywicznego systemu wyznaczenia pozycji okrętu. Obrazy uzyskane z radarów nawigacyjnych zawierają zwykle ogromne ilości informacji. Wykorzystanie jej w całości w systemach pozycjonowania jest praktycznie niemożliwe. Wiąże się to z ograniczonymi możliwościami obliczeniowymi współczesnych komputerów. Konieczne staje się zatem skondensowanie występującej w każdym obrazie informacji do wielkości akceptowalnej z punktu widzenia praktycznych zastosowań. Efekt taki możemy uzyskać poprzez zastosowanie metod ekstrakcji cech z zarejestrowanych obrazów radarowych. Artykuł prezentuje jedną z metod ekstrakcji cech bazującą na możliwościach samoorganizującej sieci Kohonena oraz sieci GRNN.
A picture from a navigation radar can be used to develop a future system for fixing ship position. Pictures obtained from navigation radars usually contain a large amount of information. It is impossible to use all of it in a position fixing system. This is mainly due to limited computation capacities of present day computers. Therefore it becomes necessary to condense information contained in each picture to the size acceptable from the point of view of practical application. Such a result can be obtained by employing methods of extraction of properties from radar pictures recorded. The paper presents one of the extraction methods based on Kohonen self-organizing net and GRNN net.

In this paper some preliminary investigation on combination of watermarking technique with biometric data to increase security of digital images in case of medical images is proposed. Performance of watermarking algorithm, based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) decomposition, that incorporates biometric watermark is elaborated. The frequency domain were chosen as it is proven, that this domain provides better robustness against attacks and leads to less perceptibility of an embedded watermark. To assure confidentiality of patient data their hand geometry features are embedded instead of patient’s name. Proposed system is evaluated by measuring the similarity between embedded and extracted biometric codes.

Over the last decades there was a growing interest in religious materiality, miraculous images, votive practices, and how the faithful engaged with devotional art, as well as a renewed impetus to discuss the long-recognized association between sculpture and touch, after the predominance of the visuality approach. Additionally, the neglected phenomenon of clothing statues has also been increasingly explored. Based on the reading of Santuario Mariano (1707–1723), written by Friar Agostinho de Santa Maria (1642–1728), this paper will closely examine those topics. Besides producing a monumental catalogue of Marian shrines and pilgrimage sites, this source offers a unique insight into the religious experience and the reciprocal relationship between image and devotee in Early Modern Portugal, and is a particularly rich source when describing the believers’ pursuit of physical contact with sculptures. This yearning for proximity is partly explained by the belief in the healing power of Marian sculptures, which in turn seemed to be conveniently transferred to a myriad of objects. When contact with the images themselves was not possible, devotees sought out their clothes, crowns, rosary beads, metric relics, and so forth. Items of clothing such as mantles and veils were particularly used and so it seems obvious they were not mere adornments or donations, but also mediums and extensions of the sculptures’ presence and power. By focusing on the thaumaturgic role of the statues’ clothes and jewels, I will argue how the practice of dressing sculptures was due to much more than stylistic desires or processional needs and draw attention to the many ways believers engaged with religious art in Early Modern Portugal.

Images not made by human hands (acheiropoietai, Gr. ἀχειροποίηταιι) played a significant role in Byzantine spiritual culture and history. This paper discusses the emergence and rise of the acheiropoietai, which represented a most important and unusual element in the Byzantine Empire. The author analyses the chronological ancestors of Christian images not made by human hands, i.e. the so-called diipetes (Gr. Διιπετής), and proceeds to demonstrate the disagreements on the topic among some of the Christian Church Fathers. The imagines imperiales, i.e. effigies of Roman emperors, constituted a significant factor in the process leading to the later veneration of images not made by human hands. The most famous of the latter is the image from Edessa, also known in historiography as Mandylion of Edessa.
