Opis:
The year 2022 marks half a century since the establishment of HYDRO Bank. It is one of the most important components of the data processing system used by Polish Geological Institute which performs the duties of the state geological and hydrogeological survey. Since its conception in 1972, HYDRO Bank has been using information technology systems. Over the following years, teams of employees repeatedly modernized, expanded and updated the hydrogeological database. The information contained in the database is the basic source of data used for domestic studies in the fields of hydrogeology, cartography, environmental protection and government administration. There is another modernization planned for the upcoming years, along with continuous updates and increase in number of the collected data.

In most cases of diseased heart valves, they can be repaired or replaced with biological or mechanical prostheses. Biological prostheses seem to be safer than mechanical ones and are applied with good clinical outcomes. Their disadvantage, when compared with mechanical valves, is durability. In the development and application of mechanical and biological heart valves, a significant role can be played by a Hybrid (Hydro-Numerical) Circulatory Model. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the opportunities created by the hybrid model for investigations of mechanical heart valves and their computer models under conditions similar to those of the circulatory system. A diode-resistor numerical valve model and three different design mechanical aortic valves were tested. To perform their investigations, computer applications were developed under RT LabView to be run on a PC. Static and dynamic characteristics of the valves were measured and registered - pressure in the numerical time-varying elastance left ventricle (pLV), in the aorta (pas) and flow (f), proving, among other factors, that 1) time delay of pas with respect to pLV is mainly related to the valve’s opening time, and 2) the valves of substantially different designs tested under identical hydrodynamic conditions reveal nearly the same dynamic performance.

The paper presents a hybrid (hydro-numerical) circulatory model built to be used as a complementary tool for clinical purposes. It was developed at the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering - Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland) in co-operation with the Institute of Clinical Physiology - National Council of Research (Italy). Main advantages of the model are: 1) high accuracy and repeatability of parameters setting, characteristic of numerical solutions, 2) maximum flexibility achieved by implementing the largest possible number of the model’s elements in the numerical way, 3) ability to test mechanical heart assist devices provided by special computer applications; in the model two physically different signal environments - numerical and hydraulic - are connected by special impedance transformers interfacing physical and numerical parts of the model; 4) eliminating flowmeters, as the voltage controlled flow sources embedded in the system provide information on flows. In vitro tests were performed to evaluate the circulatory model: a) modelling and simulation of physiological and pathological states parameters vs. left ventricular end-systolic elastance (Emax l) and rest volume (Vol) variations, b) testing the effect of LVAD counterpulsation on circulatory hemodynamics and ventricular energetics; it resulted in the increase of total cardiac output (COLV tot) from pathological value 3.8 to 5.4 l·min−1, mean aortic pressure mPas from 67.8 to 96.1 mmHg and in the decrease of left atrial pressure mPla from 15.7 to 7.7 mmHg and External Work nEW by 37.5%. The model was verified based on literature data.

Sediment is a universal issue that is generated in the river catchment and affects the river flow, reservoir capacity, hydropower generation and dam structure. This paper aims to present the result of experimentation in sediment load estimation using various machine learning algorithms as a powerful AI approach. The data was collected from eight locations in upstream area of Ringlet reservoir catchment. The input variables are discharge and suspended solid. It was found that there is strong correlation between sediment and suspended solid with correlation coefficient of R = 0.9 . The developed ML model successfully estimated the sediment load with competitive results from ANN, Decision Tree, AdaBoost and SVM. The best result was produced by SVM (v-SVM version) where very low RMSE was generated for both training and testing dataset despite its more complicated hyperparameters setup. The results also show a promising application of machine learning for future prediction in hydro-informatic systems.

The waste warm waters from power plants, owing to their temperature regime (25–38°C) and the volumes of discharge, allow for their use for heating of open ground areas in agriculture. Underground heating by such water is a new, special heat and irrigation method which enables not only purposeful regulation of temperature conditions of the crop growing environment, but also dissipates heat in the soil, thus cooling the water for its reuse. This makes it possible to reduce the thermal pollution of water sources.

Opis:
The provision of a reliable water-supply system is essential for the development and well-being of urban communities. Samdrupjongkhar Thromde, located in Bhutan, has been facing water supply challenges despite the presence of a water treatment plant. The non-perennial nature of the current water source coupled with malfunctions in water pumps has led to acute water shortages in the municipality. To address this issue, this study carried out a feasibility investigation and designed a gravity water supply system by conducting an EPANET (Environment Protection Agency Network Evaluation Tool) analysis. The study involved field visits to identify potential water sources, and a topographic survey using RTK (Real Time Kinematics) technology to determine the optimal pipeline route. The EPANET analysis was then conducted to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the initial route. Based on these findings, a final water pipeline route was selected considering factors such as terrain characteristics, construction feasibility, avoidance of negative water pressure, and minimum encroachment of private land. The results showed that the maximum pressure head within the pipeline system reached 296 m with a maximum water flow velocity of 5 m/s. However, at the outlet, the pressure head decreased to 70 m and the velocity decreased to 2 m/s. Two Break Pressure Tanks (BPT) were strategically placed to achieve this pressure reduction. The chosen pipe materials and their placement ensure the long-term reliability and functionality of the water supply system, while considering maintenance convenience and terrain characteristics.

Opis:
Aside from the issues peace and stability, one of Afghanistan’s most vital needs is safe and reliable supplies of water. But Afghanistan faces certain economic, political, institutional problems to develop water resources potential. These problems will increase as the years go by. Afghanistan is one of the world’s poorest countries, with an economy largely based on subsistence agriculture. Afghan farmers depend on reliable, year-round sources of surface water and groundwater. Seasonal flows of streams and rivers fed by melting snowpack high in Afghanistan’s mountains recharge alluvial aquifers located in populated valleys and provide city dwellers with drinking water. The current population of Afghanistan is about 31 million and it is projected to increase by nearly 80 percent by the year 2050 to approximately 56 million. This will raise demand on the country’s already economic stressed water resources. Almost all of the river basins are transboundary in the country. The Country due to the political unrest has not participated in many of the agreements regulating water resources in Central Asia. its current “non-player” and "outsider" status of the Central Asian Hydropolitics has to be changed when starting water resources development. This could create an international dispute in future regional water sharing discussions. In addition, recent research suggests that global climate change could alter precipitation patterns in Afghanistan. In particular, both the amount and the timing of snowfall received at higher elevations could change, impacting the major source of water for many areas in Afghanistan. Development of Afghanistan’s most transboundary water resources is a vital need for its own national interest, but it is also directly related with a transboundary water management dispute issue in the region. In other words, Afghanistan should find the best way to develop its transboundary water resources for national development as well as peace and stability of the region. But this development won't be so easy if current amount of water use of riparian states will be same when Afghanistan plans to release smaller amount of water.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of geotechnical parameters of the alluvial deposit (the areas of the Vistula and Warta river valleys) with a view to using the soil as an earth construction material and as a foundation for buildings constructed on the grounds tested. Strength and deformation parameters of the subsoil tested were identified by the CPTU (cone penetration test) and DMT (flat dilatometer test) methods, as well as by the vane test (VT). The article includes the analysis of overconsolidation process of the soil tested and a formula for the identification of the overconsolidation ratio OCR. Equation 4 reflects the relation between the undrained shear strength and plasticity of the silts analyzed and the OCR value. The analysis resulted in the determination of the Nkt coefficient, which might be used to identify the undrained shear strength of both sediments tested. On the basis of a detailed analysis of changes in terms of the constrained oedometric modulus M0, the relations between the said modulus, the liquidity index and the OCR value were identified. Mayne’s formula (1995) was used to determine the M0 modulus from the CPTU test. The usefulness of the alluvial deposit as an earth construction material was analysed after their structure had been destroyed and compacted with a Proctor apparatus. In cases of samples characterized by different water content and soil particle density, the analysis of changes in terms of cohesion and the internal friction angle proved that these parameters are influenced by the soil phase composition. On the basis of the tests, it was concluded that the most desirable shear strength parameters are achieved when the silt is compacted below the optimum water content.

Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The study aims to assess the sustainability of rural areas of Western Himalayas during the year 2019. Materials and methods: Aquestionnaire-based survey was conducted in upper Beas Valley of Himachal Pradesh. A total of 101 individuals were interviewed and the questionnaire was filled by the surveyor. Results: Survey showed that high level of unemployment prevailed in the region with minimal monthly income. However, they engaged in agriculture and allied activities along with collection of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to supplement their incomes. The proximity to protected areas led to frequent encounter with wildlife and such encounters increased after the commencement of Hydro Power Projects. Respondents believed that construction HPPs and expansion road network in the region has increased the occurrence of landslides; and many of them had lost their cultivated land due to landslides. Conclusions: The study showed rural areas of upper Beas Valley were moderately unsustainable.
