W 1960 r. w Nowej Hucie miały miejsce zajścia, które historycy zwykli określać mianem "walk o krzyż". W swojej krótkiej pracy postanowiłem przybliżyć te niezwykle dramatyczne wydarzenia w najmłodszej dzielnicy Krakowa. Powołując się na wypowiedzi świadków i uczestników zajść wykazałem, że 27. kwietnia 1960 r. w Nowej Hucie mieliśmy obraz wojny. Doszło do starć zbrojnych ze służbami porządkowymi, nie obyło się bez rannych (nie wiemy czy byli zabici). W pracy przedstawiłem też genezę tych wydarzeń zaznaczając, że społeczeństwo nowohuckie poczuło się oszukane cofnięciem zgody na budowę kościoła. Pomysł tematyki tekstu zrodził się w związku z 50-tą rocznicą "rewolucji nowohuckiej".
In the year of 1960 in Nowa Huta took place the incidents, which historians usually call “the struggles for the cross”. In my brief paper I decided to examine those remarkably dramatic events in the newest district of Cracow. Referring to the statements of the witnesses and participants of the incidents I prove that on the 27th of April of 1960 Nowa Huta constituted a warlike image. There was armed struggle with the armed services, there were also wounded victims (it is not known whether there were any killed). In the paper I also present the genesis of the events emphasizing that the community of Nowa Huta felt cheated by the withdrawal of the permission for the construction of a church. The idea for the essay was born in regard to the 50th anniversary of the “revolution of Nowa Huta”.

The article reflects on the possibilities of using photography in the contemporary regional education. Using the example of the rich iconography of Nowa Huta, the ways of presenting it in the district’s public sphere (museums, galleries, clubs), as well as using it in the local socio-cultural events, the article discusses various forms of searching for and expressing the phenomenon of this district, its complex history, and the individual and collective identity of the inhabitants through photography. Didactic inspirations derived from the cultural practices enable widening the scope of the young people’s participation in Nowa Huta’s cultural life. They also make us realize the need for greater systemic development of students’ cultural competencies in terms of reading and interpreting photography, as well as the need to shape their creative subjectivity.

Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie w jaki sposób postrzegana jest przez współczesnych odbiorców przestrzeni kompozycja architektoniczna i urbanistyczna miast, których podstawą powstania były ideologie. Do badania posłużyły: krakowska Nowa Huta i strasburski Neustadt, a grupę badawczą stanowili dorośli użytkownicy tych przestrzeni, przebywający w tych obszarach czasowo.
It is common knowledge that architecture and urban planning are largely shaped by political ideologies and doctrines. This paper is an attempt at answering a question how contemporary space recipients perceive architectural and urban composition of cities whose foundation was based on ideologies. The research focused on Nowa Huta in Cracow and Neustadt in Strasbourg, and the study group consisted of adult users of these spaces, staying there only temporarily.

The propaganda literature of the period of creation of a metallurgic conglomerate and “new city” connected to it nearby Kraków, ideologically juxtaposed the young against the old, implying a tendency to radical social changes in the case of the former. It was young people coming from the whole country and deriving mainly from the rural environment, fancing themselves an avantgarde of socialism that constituted 80% of builders, and, later on, inhabitants of Nowa Huta. In spite of having included the very district into the administrative borderlines of Kraków, the integration of the two parts of the city was impossible for many decades, which was largely caused by mutual prejudices, deriving from the cultural differences of communities inhabiting it. At that time, the image of Nowa Huta as a district touched by various pathologies and, thus, extremely dangerous, was ingrained in the so called common belief. The very stereotype was rooted by a series of articles on the examples of violence connected to the subculture of blockers from Nowa Huta. It resulted in, among other things, the fall of attractiveness of the very district as a potential place of living and, consequently, the outflow of young, rich and industrious people choosing the places of a greater prestige. In connection with natural demographic processes, the former district of youth became a city of “old people” at the beginning of the 21st century. However, there is much evidence that the history of this “youngest district of Kraków” has not finished. At present, on the rising tide of interests with socialism, one can observe the attempts of Nowa Huta revitalization which is connected with the exploration of its original past. The district is also becoming a witness of interesting cultural initiatives and happenings presenting a new perspective on the period of the formation of socialism. Of course, the very situation is, above all, commercial in nature, but in many inhabitants of blocks of flats in Nowa Huta, evokes pride, constituting, at the same time, the element of community formation and identity creation.

The theme of my work is related to the thirtieth anniversary of the introduction of mar-tial law in Poland on the 13th December 1981 by General Wojciech Jaruzelski. It concerns one of the largest sites of resistance in the country – Nowa Huta. I have presented what the arrest of the opposition activist in Nowa Huta looked like on the night of 12/13 December 1981 and I have presented the course of strike and its repression in the largest workplace in Cracow – in the Vladimir Lenin Steelworks in Nowa Huta.

After the Second World War Poland became a country of rapid progress of industralization and urbanization. Three factors determine a considerable rise in the urban population: migration from the village to the town, a very high birth rate in the years 1946-1960 and the changes Of administrative boundaries of towns Each of these factors was acting with various force at different stages of Polish development. Many industrial investments were undertaken simultanously with urban and estate investments. Nowa Huta near Krakow is a good example of this. The author sees Nowa Huta as a symbol of post-war industrial and urban changes in Poland. In Nowa Huta we have a phenommenon of modern urbanization which consists in the erection and development of a town with the construction of an industrial plant. Industry is here a principal or even the only factor which causes the growth of a town. The rise of this enormous industrial plant, absorbing the extra labour power, had to change the character of Kraków and had to create a big Poland. In Nowa Huta we have a phenomenon of modern urbanization which could influence the changes of structures and social conditions in the town. Now, Nowa Huta has about 190 000 inhabitants. It became a self-sufficient urban organism. The population coming from the rural region amounts to 2/3 of the Nowa Huta's population. The youth under 24 years constitutes half of its population.

The following article attempts to show how the heritage space of Nowa Huta undergoes gradual transformation under the influence of tourism. An example, which is going to be examined, is a new tourist route presenting the heritage of shelters at Nowa Huta. The context for this discussion is the concept of edutainment, which is a form of education through entertainment. It will be discussed that the inclusion of entertainment elements in the process of dissonant heritage interpretation, is a solution that facilitates noticing ambivalences resulting from the complex nature of the past, and thus contributes to more profound understanding and opens a space for the acceptance of the heritage.

Projekt Podziemna Nowa Huta ma na celu udostępnienie kilku nowohuckich schronów z okresu zimnej wojny do celów wystawienniczych. Celem artykułu jest analiza wykorzystania sposobów interpretacji dziedzictwa w zakresie ekspozycyjnym i edukacyjnym tego projektu. W badaniach wykorzystano metodę desk research oraz obserwację uczestniczącą. Zaprezentowane informacje dotyczące historii projektu, jego założeń, scenariusza, realizacji, działań mu towarzyszących oraz informacje z zakresu historii schronów przeciwlotniczych w Polsce i na terenie Nowej Huty były gromadzone przez autorkę tekstu podczas jej czynnego udziału w projekcie. 28 lutego 2019 r. udostępniono do zwiedzania pierwszy schron (pierwszy etap projektu), w którym przygotowano wystawę „Stan zagrożenia”. Towarzyszą jej wydarzenia edukacyjne: oprowadzania, lekcje muzealne, spacery, warsztaty. W planach są kolejne wystawy, a także nowe wyzwania edukacyjne. Omówione w artykule zagadnienia pozwalają zauważyć, że cele i realizacja projektu są mocno osadzone w teorii interpretacji dziedzictwa, a Podziemna Nowa Huta stanowi propozycję o dużym potencjale.

Nowa Huta, a symbol of a generation and significant place in the symbolic space of the Polish People’s Republic, was a character in newsreels, documentaries and films many times. The latter include two films by Kazimierz Karabasz: Shadow is Not Far (1984) and Memory (1985). In them Nowa Huta forms a setting for stories told about common people, yet it is also an important setting that determines their place in life, both in the past and in the present, regardless of whether they feel attached to it or rebel against it. Karabasz s heroes were people from Nowa Huta. They built it, and worked and lived in it. They were also shaped by its building. They are therefore also the people of Nowa Huta.

The flint material found in 2001 on the dune surface at Huta Radoryska in South-Podlasian Lowland near Żelechów is associated with human activity. The dune is located at Mała Bystrzyca depression. This depression, filled with the Wartanian silts, Eemian, Vistulian sands and Holocene peats, was formed after dead ice had thawed during deglaciation of the Wartanian ice sheet. The dune is built from eolian sands, mainly accumulated in the Late Vistulian (the Younger Dryas). The palaeosol (podsolic), formed in the Atlantic Period, occurs in the upper part of the dune. There were flints (344) pieces within humus horizon A1 of this palaeosol and above it. Flint cores and tools were recognised among flints. Most of the artefacts were connected with the Mesolithic (the Komornica and Chojnice-Pieńki Culture). Few Late Palaeolithic and Bronze Age flint artefacts were also found. Human activity have lasted for over 10 thousand years on this dune.

The article shows literary and documentary presentations of the first years of building Nowa Huta in the context of the avant-garde gesture of blurring the traces of the past and attempting at establishing a completely new beginning. Another equally important goal is to show how Nowa Huta, a model city of socialist visions, was organized by the dialectic of materialization and dematerialization which governed both the rhetoric of architectural visions and descriptions of human – especially women’s – corporeality. The author combines idealized (and therefore immaterial) approach whose ideological senses are projected onto the architecture of a utopian city with the socialistic approach to the body as a precisely shaped form whose biological and generally material qualities are disciplined. The author describes a few attempts of bodily disobedience to the dictate of the form, exposing the gap between postulated construction plans and the reality of everyday life entangled in the materiality of architecture and the biological nature of the body.

Targówek, dzielnica Warszawy od 1916 r., był miejscem lokalizacji czterech hut szkła. Ich powstawanie wpisane było w zjawisko kształtowania się po powstaniu styczniowym na terenie Warszawy i okolic tzw. Warszawskiego Okręgu Przemysłowego. W latach 70. XIX w. hutę szkła założyli tu właściciele warszawskiej fabryki chemicznej – Jan Ch. Kijewski i Adolf Scholtze. Od 1909 roku funkcjonowała krótko huta „Targówek” Moryca Wegmeistra. W latach 20. XX w. powstały „Zakłady Przemysłowe «Weneda» Szymański, Kurowski i S-ka” z hutą przy ul. Radzymińskiej 138. Od 1927 r. produkcję prowadziła fabryka przy ul. Radzymińskiej 116, w latach 30. pod nazwą „Huta i Rafineria Szkła «Targówek» Kazimierz Klimczak i S-wie”. Jedną z przyczyn zagęszczenia lokalizacji wspomnianych zakładów na niewielkim obszarze były dogodne warunki transportowe (rozbudowana sieć kolejowa). W hutach produkowano różne rodzaje szkła, z przewagą szkła laboratoryjnego, aptecznego i medycznego.
Targówek (district of Warsaw since 1916) was the location of four glassworks. Their founding was a part of the process, which saw the shaping of the so called Warsaw Industrial District after the “January Uprising” (1863–1864). The owners of Warsaw chemical factory, J. Ch. Kijewski and A. Scholtze, founded their glassworks in this area, during the 1870s. After 1909, another glassworks company: “Targówek”, owned by Moryc Wegmeister, existed for a short period of time. The third: “Zakłady Przemysłowe «Weneda» Szymański Kurowski i S-ka” was founded in the 1920s, with the factory located at Radzymińska Street 138. In 1927, glass production was started at Radzymińska Street 116, which re-branded in 1930s, to “Huta i Rafineria Szkła «Targówek» Kazimierz Klimczak i S-wie”. One of the reasons for choosing such a small location for the factories, was the convenient transport conditions (expanded railway system). The goal of this paper is to expose and analyze the contemporary folklore of the industrial discrit of Kraków called Nowa Huta. „City without God”, how it was created and named, played a significant role in the Polish resistant movement during communist times. Stories of that period are crucial for Nowa Huta citizens, first of all for their indentity, but also for district’s image and marketing. Since the post-war times there is a shop „Cepelia” placed in Central Square of Ronald Reagan in Nowa Huta, Kraków. CPLiA (Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego i Artystycznego, what means: Headquarters of the Folk and Artistic Industry) all the communist period long was govermental branch responsible for folk arts & crafts. In fact it was a huge buissnes employing over 20 000 people to design, create and sell folk art which pleased the socialist party. The shop in Nowa Huta was one connected to this network, however after political transformation in 90s of 20th centrury it changed as well. Cepelia became Cepelix. Nowadays (research was conducted in 2014 and 2022) one can find there some folk art, but also modern design connected to the district indentity and history. Paper contains an analysys of this new assortment and tryies to answer the question is it possible to treat it as a folklore as well as the other items being sold there?

Nowa Huta is an example of the implementation of features of socialist realist urban planning, where uniqueness is raised by the coexistence of architecture and vegetation. Solidarności Avenue is a kind of cross-section of this urban system. The article presents the character and potential of public spaces that make up the route through the architectural - landscape analysis and conceptual design.

The article analyses the process of interpreting the cultural and economic values of the socialist tangible heritage of Nowa Huta – a former town, today a district of Krakow. The objective of the article is to define the scope of interest of both public and commercial entities in the creation of products and services which are related to the place’s heritage and which make use of this resource. Another goal is to indicate the forms and scope of use of Nowa Huta heritage resources. On the basis of the determined facts, it can be stated that the socialist heritage of Nowa Huta may become one of the elements of its new economic structure, which has emerged as a result of the economic transition after the fall of socialism. However, the process of creating heritage products must be sustainable in the long run and must be conducted while suitably interpreting the qualities of the heritage, respecting it and commemorating events included in it.
W artykule analizowany jest proces interpretacji wartości kulturowych i ekonomicznych materialnego dziedzictwa socjalizmu w Nowej Hucie – dawnym mieście, dzisiejszej dzielnicy Krakowa. Autor zakreśla zakres zainteresowania podmiotów zarówno publicznych, jak i komercyjnych tworzeniem produktów i usług dziedzictwa wykorzystujących ten zasób. Na podstawie ustalonych faktów można uznać, że dziedzictwo socjalistyczne Nowej Huty ma szanse stać się jednym z elementów jej nowej struktury gospodarczej, po transformacji gospodarki. Proces tworzenia produktów dziedzictwa musi odbywać się jednak w sposób długookresowo zrównoważony, z poszanowaniem walorów tego dziedzictwa oraz pamięci o wydarzeniach, które stanowią jego część.

W opracowaniu podjęto próbę identyfikacji czynników warunkujących decyzje o wyborze placu targowego na miejsce dokonywania zakupów oraz przyczyn wyboru określonego placu przez mieszkańców Krakowa. W tym celu przeprowadzono marketingowe badania bezpośrednie na terenie trzech wybranych placów targowych jednej z dzielnic Krakowa – Nowej Huty, jak również w wyznaczonych punktach miasta, powszechnie uczęszczanych oraz charakteryzujących się znaczną bliskością położenia względem badanych targowisk. W badaniach uczestniczyli mikroprzedsiębiorcy, klienci placów targowych oraz potencjalni klienci. Na podstawie badań stwierdzono następujące przesłanki wyboru omawianych targowisk przez konsumentów: 1) dogodne położenie względem miejsca zamieszkania oraz ciągów komunikacyjnych; 2) wielkość targowiska; 3) bliskość zaplecza rolnego oraz dostępność płodów rolnych kupowanych bezpośrednio od producentów jako czynnik warunkujący rozpiętość oferty asortymentowej, a w rezultacie zwiększający atrakcyjność targowiska; 4) oddziaływanie niektórych megatrendów (zdrowie, indywidualizm, potrzeba nawiązywania kontaktów i spowolnienie tempa życia) na decyzje konsumentów.
In the article there is an attempt to identify the decision factors for choosing a market as a place of doing the shopping and the reasons for choosing a particular market by the inhabitants of Cracow. For that reason the marketing researches have been conducted with the use of a questionnaire interview. The survey was done in the year 2014 and 2015 in three selected markets located in one of the districts of Cracow – Nowa Huta, as well as in definite points of the city, a widely attended and characterized by a proximity to the markets. In the study attended entrepreneurs, customers of markets and potential customers. Authors found out the following reasons for choosing the markets to purchase consumer goods: 1) convenient location relative to the place of residence and communication lines; 2) the size of the market; 3) proximity to agricultural areas and the availability of crops purchased directly from producers as a determinant of the diversity of agricultural products, and as a result increasing the attractiveness of the markets; 4) the impact of certain megatrends (health, individualism, the need for networking and to slow down the pace of life) on consumer decisions.

“We Are Building Socialism” was the first newspaper, which came out in Nowa Huta in 1950-1956. From the perspective of discourse analysis, we can look at it as a kind of the guide on the new, socialist world. This vision was created specifically for a particular type of readers, which were workers arriving for the construction of a new city and in majority came from rural milieu. Therefore the way of writing, based on rigid rules of newspeak Stalinist period, have to be adapted to the perceptual capabilities of potential readers – mainly young people, who were in fact not used to reading the press. At the same time, the newspaper also includes a description of the world “here and now” in its local dimension. So if we know the principles of newspeak and we are able to decode it, we can also go behind the scenes of “The Great Construction” and look at everyday life.
