Opis:
The sapiential Psalm 1 contains a teaching on the two paths of the humanlife and the consequences of our choices. It contrasts the just man who is“happy” (v. 1) with the villains who are “lost” (v. 6). According to the psalmistthe man is fulfilled when he radically avoids the ways of the wickedand “delights in the Divine Precepts” which they “meditate tirelessly” (v. 2).The notion of the Law refers here to the books of the Bible – that is thewritten Word of God which the lives of the just are imbibed in and whichserves as the moral compass. God, in response to such a devoted attitude, watches over the life of the righteous and provides for his needs. Psalm 1serves as an encouragement to read the Bible and to meditate upon the willof God which is found on its pages. This is the way to achieve the ultimatehappiness which the man can be experienced in the intimate union withGod both on Earth and in the World to come.

Opis:
Freedom is a multidimensional concept. It can be understood in many ways, which are often dependent on the ideological mainstream of thought of the era. On the one hand, freedom can be commonly understood as doing what one wants. On the other hand, you can argue about it as an example of inner freedom e.g. absolute freedom by Jean Paul Sartre. Another time, it is perceived in the aspect of external freedom such as political freedom. For John Stuart Mill and Isaiah Berlin political freedom was freedom in the liberal sense. Isaiah Berlin distinguished it on the positive freedom ("to") and negative freedom ("from"). Freedom has to be the source of human autonomy, individualism, the liberty of physical and intellectual development, i.e. not forced action at will. Thus understood freedom makes a man happy. It makes him the owner of a very valuable thing too: the ability of making choices. One should ask a fundamental question: does every human have the same freedom? As history shows, unfortunately, not every man is free to the same extent. As a result of labor division - since ancient times - the society evolved to class division; the rulers and the subjects. In this study, I intended to demonstrate that egalitarianism, of which people solicited wherever class inequality dominated (eg. slavery, feudalism, capital-ism, etc.) does not always go hand in hand with freedom. Egalitarianism may be the source of the formation of political paternalism - as in the case of communism in terms of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. In the twenty-first century, in the era of consumerism, despite the dominance of pluralism and relative equality, it is still hard to talk about any kind of freedom. Zygmunt Bauman wrote about how people, inundated with variety of offers of consumerist market, become just slaves to the great commercial companies. Freedom is identified with buying i.e. the constant picking from vast range of goods and services. Those who do not meet the requirements of being active consumers, are excluded from consumerism community - becoming, according to Zygmunt Bauman, “the new poor”, unhappy people.

Opis:
The article offers phenomenological analysis of the nature of boredom as an „experience without qualities”. The distinction between ordinary and profound boredom, the human person’s relationship with the world as well as the world’s way of givenness in the experience of boredom, is brought to evidence. The experience of inner void peculiar to boredom and its sources is discussed. The experience of boredom uniquely discloses the human person’s vocation to enter the dialogue with reality and as it were from the opposite, manifests the objective nature of human happiness.
Doświadczenie nudy w wyjątkowy sposób odsłania powołanie człowieka do dialogu z rzeczywistością i niejako z przeciwności ukazuje obiektywną naturę ludzkiego szczęścia.

Opis:
Whereas a great many academics have presumed to speak knowledgeably about Aristotle's work, comparatively few have actually studied his texts in sustained detail and very few scholars in the social sciences have examined Aristotle's work mindfully of its relevance for the study of human knowing and acting on a more contemporary or enduring plane. Further, although many people simply do not know Aristotle's works well, even those who are highly familiar with Aristotle's texts (including Nicomachean Ethics) generally have lacked conceptual frames for traversing the corridors of Western social thought in more sustained pragmatist terms. It is here, using symbolic interactionism (a sociological extension of pragmatist philosophy) as an enabling device for developing both transsituational and transhistorical comparisons, that it is possible to establish links of the more enduring and intellectually productive sort between the classical scholarship of the Greeks and the ever emergent contemporary scene. After (1) overviewing the theoretical emphasis of symbolic interactionism, this paper (2) locates Aristotle's works within a broader historical context, (3) situates Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics within the context of his own work and that of his teacher Plato, and (4) takes readers on an intellectual voyage through Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Not only does his text address a great many aspects of human lived experience, but it also has great instructive value for the more enduring study of human group life. Accordingly, attention is given to matters such as (a) human agency, reflectivity, and culpability; (b) definitions of the situation; (c) character, habits, and situated activities; (d) emotionality and its relationship to activity; (e) morality, order, and deviance; (f) people's senses of self regulation and their considerations of the other; (g) rationality and judgment; (h) friendship and associated relationships; (i) human happiness; and (k) intellectual activity. In concluding the paper, one line of inquiry that uses contemporary symbolic interaction as resource for engaging Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is suggested. However, as indicated in the broader statement presented here, so much more could be accomplished by employing symbolic interactionism as a contemporary pragmatist device for engaging Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.

The article deals with several issues related to the concept of happiness that emerge from Plato’s triptych: the Gorgias, the Republic and the Laws. The focus is on (1) the question of the alleged overcoming of the eudaimonistic imperative, i.e., natural human pursuit of happiness, in the didactic message of the Republic; (2) the question of to what extent the path of cognition ending in the contemplation of the perfect being is at the same time a strive for the supreme happiness; (3) the dilemma of choosing between a reductive and a cumulative model of complete satisfaction in human life; and finally (4) the problem of affiliative conditions of full life satisfaction.

The aim of the study is to pay attention to the issue to the need to look at materials used in architectural and structural design of residential buildings. It is an attempt to find an answer to what architecture of hippiness is. Is space in natural, unaffected way affects on human senses, treating them complementarily, positively tuning without the participation of the analytical part of the brain can affect the human sense of happiness? The presented material can be a starting point for further studies on the importance of the senses in the selection of materials for the construction of residential buildings.

In this paper, we contribute to the debate on life-satisfaction gap between the citizens of post-socialist countries of Europe and Asia and their highly developed OECD counterparts, by examining the influence of de jure and de facto respect for empowerment rights. We mainly focus on the measure of rights protection called de jure - de facto rights protection gap. The empowerment rights included in the analysis are: the freedom of association, the freedom of expression, the freedom of religion, the freedom of foreign movement. Our results imply that government’s respect for these rights plays the role in diminishing happiness gap. We base the conclusions on an empirical study conducted on the sample of more than 59,000 observations. The data used for the study consist of World Values Survey database (waves 3–6) and a number of socio-economic indicators for 44 countries.

Since Renaissance times, there has been a fashion, largely driven by Baconian science, that explaining the universe need not suppose the existence of formal and final causes. Because ideas have consequences, this elimination of forms and purposes affects society’s conception of happiness. It is hard to see how human life can be meaningful if there is no human nature and life is purposeless. Philosophers can help restore cultural health by challenging mechanism, by showing how its assumptions are not defensible and by showing how it has damaged our pursuit of happiness.

The growing popularity of the ideas of transhumanists prompts philosophical reflection on this current of contemporary thought. Hava Tirosh-Samuelson in numerous publications analyzed the historical context of transhumanism and the significance of its most important theses. She undertook research on issues such as human nature, life extention, cyber-immortality, happiness, and religious aspects. Her fundamentally critical opinion about transhumanism is supported by sound arguments. The presented analyzes are certainly not final – they can inspire and encourage further research.

In this article, I present the results of my sociological research on the perception and assessment of the role of religion by Polish youth in the sense of life and people’s happiness. I realized out my own research in 2008 among 456 school youth in Kalisz and in 2011 among 426 students of the College of Communications and Management in Poznan. The results of my research are confronted here with the results of research of other sociologists with they realized (implemented) in the past (XX) century among high school youth and students on the subject of existential role. A comparative analysis of the results of both research showed significant changes in the assessment of today’s (contemporary) Polish youth, which the of religion in giving meaning to life and a sense of happiness for people. Today’s youth (from the 21st century) in Poland is more critical of the existential role of religion and more often questions the necessity of this role in people’s lives than the youth of the past century. At the same time, the indicator of today’s youth has decreased, which accepts fully or conditionally (partially) the role of religion in life and in the feeling of happiness by people. Indicator of positive of the existential role of religion among Polish youth were much greater in the past century.
