Former guidebooks are an important category of historical source that allows for the reconstruction of many aspects of the history of tourism. The dynamic development of guidebook literature began in the 19th century when a modern type with descriptions according to routes and containing much practical information was developed. The guidebooks also presented a lot of other information of a general nature, such as geography, ethnology, natural science, as well as descriptions of monuments and works of art. The importance of Polish guidebooks for writing about art is very high yet underestimated. The aim of this paper is to define the role that these publications played in the field of artistic historiography, and to indicate the relationships between the guidebooks and the development of academic research on art. These problems are undoubtedly an interesting area of interdisciplinary relation between the historical development of tourism and academia, with a particular focus on art history in this case.

The article fills the gap in the knowledge of the history of tourism in the Western Bieszczady, presenting its beginnings in the 19th century. This area was rarely visited, as it was not perceived as attractive; the beginnings of tourist “exploration” date back to the 19th century. The analysis is based on diary accounts, memoirs, press articles and the first travel guides. In the preserved reports, the Bieszczady Mountains appear as a wild, inaccessible area, devoid of the road infrastructure necessary for travelers. The wilderness of Bieszczady was traversed for sentimental, social, commercial, religious and health reasons, initially on foot or on horseback.
Artykuł uzupełnia lukę w stanie wiedzy o historii turystyki w Bieszczadach Zachodnich, prezentując jej początki w XIX w. Teren ten był rzadko odwiedzany i choć nie postrzegano go jako atrakcyjnego, początki turystycznej „eksploracji” sięgały XIX w. Analiza opiera się na relacjach pamiętnikarskich, wspomnieniach, artykułach prasowych oraz pierwszych przewodnikach turystycznych. W zachowanych relacjach Bieszczady jawią się jako dziki, nieprzystępny obszar, pozbawiony infrastruktury drogowej koniecznej dla podróżnych. Bieszczadzkie bezdroża pokonywano z pobudek sentymentalnych, towarzyskich, handlowych, religijnych i zdrowotnych, początkowo pieszo bądź konno.

W artykule zaprezentowano najistotniejsze aspekty rozwoju turystyki w regionie łódzkim na tle najważniejszych okresów w rozwoju tego zjawiska w Polsce. Szczególną uwagę skupiono na ostatnich stu latach, w ciągu których w podziale administracyjnym kraju funkcjonowała jednostka o nazwie „województwo łódzkie”. Dokonano także periodyzacji rozwoju zjawiska i scharakteryzowano wyróżnione okresy, wskazując na ich znamienne cechy.
The article presents the most important aspects of tourism development in the Łódź region against the background of the most important periods in the development of this phenomenon in Poland. Particular attention has been focused on the last one hundred years, during which the Łódź Voivodeship has existed within the administrative division of the country. The development of the phenomenon was also periodised, and the distinguished periods were characterised, indicating their cha-racteristic features.

Turystyka narciarska na obszarze województwa sieradzkiego w latach 1975–1998 była związana z dwoma organizacjami społecznymi: Polskim Towarzystwem Turystyczno-Krajoznawczym oraz Zrzeszeniem Ludowe Zespoły Sportowe. Upowszechnianiem turystyki narciarskiej w ramach Polskiego Towarzystwa Turystyczno-Krajoznawczego w województwie sieradzkim zajmował się Klub Narciarski działający w strukturach Oddziału Towarzystwa w Zduńskiej Woli. W latach 1975–1998 członkowie Klubu Narciarskiego corocznie organizowali wyjazdy w góry na obozy narciarskie. Początkowo turnusy były organizowane w schroniskach krajowych. Po ,,otwarciu” granic w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku odbywały się w Czechosłowacji, a następnie w Czechach i Słowacji. Natomiast główną formą działalności Wojewódzkiego Zrzeszenia Ludowe Zespoły Sportowe w Sieradzu w zakresie upowszechnienia turystyki narciarskiej była organizacja i udział w imprezach turystycznych. W latach 1975–1998 członkowie zrzeszenia brali czynny udział w ogólnopolskich i międzynarodowych rajdach narciarskich, m.in.: Ogólnopolskim Narciarskim Rajdzie Chłopskim w Rajczy (od 1993 roku międzynarodowym) i Ogólnopolskim Podhalańskim Rajdzie Narciarskim LZS w Białym Dunajcu.
Ski tourism on the territory of the sieradzkie province in the years 1975–1998 was associated with two social organizations: Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Association and Association of Rural Sports Teams. As part of Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Association ski tourism in the province of sieradzkie was promoted by a Ski Club operating within the structures of the Association Branch in Zduńska Wola. In the years 1975–1998 each year members of the Ski Club organized trips to the mountains on ski camps. Initially, the stays were organized in national hostels. After the borders “opened” in 1990s they took place in Czechoslovakia and then in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In turn, the main activity of the Provincial Association of Rural Sports Teams in Sieradz within the scope of promotion of ski tourism was organization of and participation in tourist events. In the years 1975–1998 the members of the association took an active part in all-Poland and international skiing rallies, among others: All-Poland Peasants’ Skiing Rally in Rajcza (international since 1993) and LZS All-Poland Skiing Rally of Podhale in Biały Dunajec.

The article presents a short overview of the origins and history of heritage tourism in China. Facing ‘three crises of faith’ after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese people began to turn towards the emotion of nostalgia in order to find themselves in the new social order. At the same time, in an effort to recover the Chinese economy, and to politically indoctrinate the people, Party leaders launched a patriotic education campaign in a form of patriotic tourism, later known as ‘red tourism’.

In Polish historiography, activities of promotors of tourism development in the city of Konin never attracted attention from regional historians or physical culture historians. More recently, however, there is a growing interest in this subject, e.g. a popular study discussing the 100-year tourist traditions in Konin has just been published. What is still missing are biographical studies of major promotors of tourism in Konin, and their particular contributions to the development of tourism in the interwar period and after World War II. The study presents short biographies of leading tourism activists from the industrial city of Konin, who were associated with various forms of tourism. The materials used in the study come from primary sources stored in the Konin National Archives, from magazine articles, memoirs, and various reports. The author included information from private collections or private chronicles, including personal correspondence and press clippings, in particular, materials written and collected by Andrzej Józef Miller.

The purpose of this article is to fill in the gap in knowledge about early academic work on tourism which had developed first of all in Europe. The author has tried to achieve this aim by conducting a retrospective analysis of chronological and institutional-methodological aspects of the evolution of tourism studies. As a result, he has distinguished two aspects (each divided into two): 1) chronological: a period of precursors and a formal academic period; 2) methodological: research within one discipline and interdisciplinary research. The results enabled the author to formulate general conclusions for critical discussion. It primarily concerns the domination of the English language and the Anglo-American tradition in the literature which is the reason why the global picture of achievements in tourism studies is incomplete and thus imperfect. The accomplishments of smaller, yet well-established, “national schools” are often ignored and remain almost unknown internationally. The author hopes that the article will be an encouragement to undertake research on early tourism studies in individual countries and to publish its results internationally as this will broaden knowledge of the origins of academic work in tourism.
