Some selected parameters of steel for structural-ballistic shields (OKB) used in the Navy vessels have been presented. The standards for steel to be used for ballistic shields are established by safety standards institutions and committees. There has been made an analysis of steel used for OKB of the vessels. The bullet-proof of the platters has been carried out on the appropriate position. The results of bullet-proof test of selected platters have been presented. The analysis made allowed to select the platters used for the structural-ballistic safety shields in marine vessels and give the direction for further research determined by contemporary threats of both military and terroristic nature. To produce the platters there have been used two types of armoured metal sheet which had been milled to flats made of the basic steel and which can be applied in shipbuilding. The structural-ballistic platters have had the form of flats with the total thickness of 8.5-9.2 mm. The prepared structural-ballistic platters have been technological processed in order to increase the degree of their strength. There have been also presented mechanical and technological properties of platters after heat treatment. The results of the bullet-proof have been presented in graphs form defining the dependence between the hit force and time. The effects of fire of specimen made of platters, by 7.62 mm cal. bullets with the proper speed have been seen on photographs.

Opis:
The article presents an overview of modern steel used in rail transport. Directions for the development of materials, technologies and constructions used in the manufacture of rail vehicles are, on the one hand, determined by the technical and economic requirements of industry and, on the other, by the continued emphasis of environmentalists on reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This generates innovation in the use of modern materials, processing methods and new design solutions and results in reduced vehicle weight. More bold forecasts today show that at the current pace of technology development, in the near future the mass of the vehicle will reduce by an average of 30%. Observing the trends and pace of rail transport development, it can be predicted that existing restrictions on the use of modern materials, such as high prices, technological conditions and difficult automation of large-scale production, can be predicted.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper is devoted the investigation hydrogen influence on of wear resistance of high nitrogen steel (HNS) at dry and solid state lubricants assistant friction. It has been established that after hydrogenation at 250 N loading the wear rate increased by 2.9 ... 4.1 times. Microhardness of hydrogenated layer was 7.6 ... 8.2 GPa, that is increased after hydrogenation in two times. After adding the (GaSe)xIn1-x compounds to the tribo conjugates by X-ray diffraction analysis it has been established the appearance of new phases which formed during the friction process and detected on the friction surface. Design/methodology/approach: This work presents research results concerning the comparative tests of high nitrogen steels in the circumstances of dry rolling friction. It was conducted the experiments to determine the tribological properties of high-nitrogen steels under rolling friction. The test pieces were manufactured in the form of rollers, and rotated with a linear velocity 2.27 m/s (upper roller), 3.08 m/s (bottom roller). Upper roller is made from HNS was subjected for hydrogenation. Analysis of friction surfaces indicates the complex mechanism of fracture surfaces. The results of the local X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis has been established the appearance of new phases and elements on the friction surface. Findings: It has been found that the level of wear resistance of the investigated materials under hydrogenation. Compounds realize chemisorption, tribochemical mechanisms of the formation of thin protective (anti-wear, antifriction) layers on metal surfaces. Research limitations/implications: An essential problem is the verification of the results obtained using the standard mechanical tests, computer-based image analysis and other methods. Practical implications: The observed phenomena can be regarded as the basic explanation of reduces the plasticity characteristics after hydrogenation. Applying the (GaSe)xIn1-x compounds as a lubricant will allow the formation of films on friction surfaces that can minimize surface wear, which will contribute to the transition to a wear-free friction mode. The protective film is a barrier to high shear and normal loads, preserving the base metal of the part and providing reduced wear and friction. Originality/value: The value of this work is that conducted experiments permit to determine the tribological properties of high nitrogen steels under rolling friction after hydrogenation. After adding (GaSe)xIn1-x compounds to the tribo conjugates after due to X-ray diffraction analysis it has been established the appearance of new phases which formed during the friction process and detected on the friction surface.

Opis:
Cast high-manganese Hadfield steel is commonly used for machine components operating under dynamic load conditions. Their high fracture toughness and abrasive wear resistance is the result of an austenitic structure, which - while being ductile - at the same time tends to surface harden under the effect of cold work. Absence of dynamic loads (e.g. in the case of sand abrasion) causes rapid and premature wear of parts. In order to improve the abrasive wear resistance of cast high-manganese steel for operation under the conditions free from dynamic loads, primary titanium carbides are produced in this cast steel during melting process to obtain in castings, after melt solidification, the microstructure consisting of an austenitic matrix and primary carbides uniformly distributed therein. After heat treatment, the microhardness of the austenitic matrix of such cast steel is up to 580 μHV20 and the resulting carbides may reach even 4000 μHV20. The impact strength of this cast steel varies from 57 to 129 and it decreases with titanium content. Compared to common cast Hadfield steel, the abrasive wear resistance determined in Miller test is at least twice as high for the 0.4% Ti alloy and continues growing with titanium content.

Opis:
Today low-alloy steels with boron achieve high resistance to abrasive wear and high strength. These features are obtained by using advanced technology of manufacturing. This makes boron steels increasingly popular and their application more diverse. Application of these steels can extend the lifetime of very expensive machine construction in many industries such as mining, the automotive, and agriculture industries. An interesting subgroup of these materials is steel with boron intended for heat treatment. These steels are supplied by the manufacturer after cold or hot rolling so that it is possible for them to be heat treated in a suitable manner by the purchaser for its specific application. Very important factor that determines the mechanical properties of final product is austenite grain growth occurring during hot working process such us quenching or hot rolling. Investigation of the effect of heating temperature and holding time on the austenite grain size is necessary to understand the growth behavior under different conditions. This article presents the result of investigation of austenite grain growth in selected low-allow boron steel with high resistance to abrasive wear and attempts to describe the influence of chemical composition on this process.

Opis:
The microstructure evolution of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials after casting and tempering was investigated. The results indicate that as-cast boron-bearing high speed steel consists of martensitic matrix, retained austenite and different borocarbides. The as-cast alloy has a hardness above 64 HRC, and the borocarbides distribute along the grain boundaries. After RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment, obvious necking and broken network appear in the grain boundaries. The hardness of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials reduces gradually with the increase of tempering temperature. Under the same conditions, the toughness of the modified roll material is higher than that of the unmodified roll material. Wear tests show that the wear resistance of boron-bearing high-speed steel modified by RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment is better.

Cast Hadfield steel is characterised by high abrasion resistance, provided, however, that it is exposed to the effect of dynamic loads. During abrasion without loading, e.g. under the impact of loose sand jet, its wear resistance drops very drastically. To increase the abrasion resistance of this alloy under the conditions where no pressure is acting, primary vanadium carbides are formed in the metallurgical process, to obtain a composite structure after the melt solidification. The primary, very hard, carbides uniformly distributed in the austenitic matrix are reported to double the wear resistance of samples subjected to the effect of a silicon carbide-water mixture.
