Opis:
Authors of ideas and creators of judical seals in Old Poland (to 1791) were completely free in creating of seal pictures. However we can observe a connection between judical and municipal iconography of seals. Rules for creating of seal pictures were established by decisions of the Great Sejm in June and October 1791. Using of judical seals for studies on town heraldry may give us unexpected results. For example we are able to revise previous settlements concerning origins of some town arms as well as heraldic symbols. We would be able to use judical seals more effectively for scientific studies, when we had at our disposal complete histories of cities and towns, lists of municipal officials as well as a knowledge of municipal judicature in old small towns.

The paper analyses the successive Zamoyski coat-of-arms. It mainly functioned in the cultural area of Zamość – the family town of the Zamoyskis. The seventeenth century coat-ofarms with a four-field shield: the Jan Zamoyski coat-of-arms, the chancellor and great crown hetman from the chapel of the Transfiguration in the Zamość cathedral; the Tomasz Zamoyski coat-of-arms cartouche, son of Jan, the second heir in tail over the middle staircase arcade in the Zamość ratusz (the original is in the Museum Arsenal in Zamość); the colourful coat-ofarms of Tomasz from the pommel of the sceptre of Zamość Akademia of ca. 1619 (the deposit in the Zamość Museum); the coat-of-arms on the elevation of the building at the Great Square in Zamość, called Wilczkowska, that belonged to Stanisław Koniecpolski, son of Joanna Barbara nee Zamoyska, Tomasz’s grandchild. The coat-of-arms of Jan Zamoyski’s niece, Jadwiga nee Włodkowie Firlej from the tombstone placed in the Franciscan church in Krosno. An attempt is made to interpret the five-filed Jan Zamoyski coat-of-arms, the third entailer, called Sobiepan, with a fairly untypical structure of family coat-of-arms cast in 1662. It is placed on one of the largest bells in Poland, named “Jan” after its founder and hanged in belfry at the Zamość Cathedral. The eighteenth-century two-field coat-of-arms have been presented (a set of silver candlesticks, the Sacral Museum in Zamość, an antique book published by the printing press of Zamość Academy on the occasion of Stanisław Potocki’s wedding with Helena Zamoyska, daughter of the fourth entailer – the Zamość Museum, the facade of St. Nepomucen baroque church on water in Zwierzyniec founded by Tomasz Antoni Zamoyski, the fourth entailer and his wife Teresa nee Michowska).

This was the case both with beliefs of representatives of folk culture – e.g. peasants in Byelorussia or shepherds in Silesia – and with recipients of high-brow and sophisticated chronicles written by medieval historians. The boar and the bear lived side by side, and this common presence – both the real one, connected with their similar habitats, and the proximity in the sphere of material and spiritual culture – could lead to the features of both these animals merging in one image, that is in the Sokola coat of arms, in which one can see a half-boar and half-bear.

Opis:
With the development of civilization, sign and symbols entered the life of Christian church in the form of coats of arms, emblems being placed on the seals, cloaks of the Order, shields and pennants. It was permissible to locate both secular and religious coats of arms in churches, providing that the owners were benefactors or patrons of the church. Throughout the ages plenty of people and institutions as well as the arising orders created the coats of arms and emblems in order to be recognized as a particular family order. The symbols placed on the coats of arms summarised the history and specificity of Order. At the beginning of the XIII century one of the greatest Orders was established by Saint Francis of Assisi (1226) and it had owned its coat of arms since ages as well. The contemporary Franciscan coat of arms presents the cross with two crossed hands at the bottom which are coming out of the clouds. One hand, presenting Jesus Christ, is without a coat and the other is in the habit of Saint Francis. This coat of arms has become the symbol of all Franciscan Orders, both male and female. This sign is being recognized by all congregations and communities with Saint Francis as a patron. The crossed arms demonstrate the affiliation to the great Franciscan family. The Third Order of Saint Francis from Assisi and Secular Franciscan Order belong to it, too. The Franciscan coat of arms that appeared in the publications for the third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi was blossoming between the wars (1918–1939). The contemporary publishing offer was widely addressed to the Tertiary which led to showing its sign on the publications. Those days a kind of promotion for the Francis family took place and relatively to this, graphic embellishment. In the current literature aimed at the Tertiary the coat of arms is used rarely, the sign most apparent is “T” (tau). There is the question to be asked, why is it so? The answer is not that easy because religious heraldry is a very complex phenomenon. It is influenced by a number of factors such as tradition, church doctrine and even the prevailing at that time fashion. Below presented coats of arms have their own place in the history of the Franciscan tertiary

The paper presents an overview of current papers(but it reminds us also of fi ndings of prewar researchers) about coats-of-arms of small chivalric clans, rarely present in sources. It also contains some fi ndings made by the author himself, mainly about Prus, Chmara and Zgraja coats-of-arms. The intent of the author was also a limited sources study refl ec-tion on the coats-of-arms, about which there is lack of information concerning their shape and probable genetical relationship with other coats-of-arms. The following coats-of-arms or their callings were mentioned: Kliza, Wiza, Moszczenica, Calina, Wazanki, Piękostki, Ulina, Owada, Czawuja, Kołmasz, Prus I (Turzyna), Prus II (Wilczekosy), Glezyna, Lary-sza, Ogniwo, Zarosie, Chmara, Zgraja, Goljan. Most of them turned out to equate with other, better known coats-of-arms, or strove for that kind of equation. All this makes the structure of polish medieval society and the rules of that society more clear

Further to an in-depth analysis of the heraldic depiction, it was possible to establish that there is a high probability that the seal dates from the first half of the 14th century, and that it was used by representatives of the knight village leaders from Strzelce.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the definition of the “hieroglyphic” which was used in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 17th to the 18th century. It takes into consideration the definition found in linguistic dictionaries and studies the area of rhetoric and poetics (printed and handwritten texts, mainly Jesuitical and Piarist ones). Apart from terminological allusions in literary texts they constitute the basic sources of information for understanding emblems and symbols (Polish writing lacks a separate treatise on issues related to symbolical genres). Polish definitions were far from egyptological issues or the hermetic tradition. During the review of material, attention has been afforded to the blurring of the differences between symbolical genres (for example considering the hieroglyphic as equivalent to an emblem or symbol due to their “symbolic” character, and using hieroglyphics as an emblematic pictorial element) was to a great extent caused by the rhetorical character of their reception. The use of scripts and dictionaries of symbols lead to the loosening of the definition of the hieroglyphic after the first half of the 17th century, and to the use of the hieroglyphic to name motifs or comparisons regarded as abstract, mysterious and allegorical. The key issues related to the definition of the hieroglyphic in Poland invovlved defining the relationship between the genre and image or writing. Among other things, the relationship between hieroglyphics and Egyptian letters was emphasized, the lack of the lemma, the use of sign images or sentences. Due to the influence of studies on the art of memory, hieroglyphics were perceived as compositions consisting of letters of rebus-like character and pictorial alphabet. In the last years of the 17th century the genre has gained interest due to cryptography and universal language. In Poland hieroglyphics were mainly understood as animal and object symbols of simplified, abstract and established, traditional meaning. They were also seen in the context of Egyptian keepsakes from the past and the mysterious sacrum. Attention was also given to this genre in the context of heraldry (coats of arms were perceived as hieroglyphics of representatives of noble families). It was believed that hieroglyphics stemmed from the principle of similarity (similitudo, sometimes identified with allegory), as well as metonymy and synecdoche. In the rhetoric of the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, hieroglyphics were combined with the moral doctrine which is typical of emblematics. In the first half of the 18th century it was common to simplify information about hieroglyphics and to reduce the historical content and sacral aspect of the genre in favor of symbolism and iconology. The enigmatic nature of meaning has gained a pejorative sense. The material which has been subject to analysis (a list of handwritten rhetoric and poetics has been included in the annex) has proved that the reception of hieroglyphics has exerted a decisive influence on the distinctness of Polish emblematics. What may be clearly seen in the context of the definition of the hierogliphicum is the specificity of symbolical writing on the territory of the Polish Republic – the borderline between the emblem and stemma

In the first part of the article a summary of the present state of research on the Lublin coat of arms is presented. On the basis of a discussion of the preserved impresses of a seal with this coat of arms the conclusion may be reached that in the whole Old Polish period until the end of the 18th century simultaneously two seals were used: ones that showed a goat only and ones showing a goat jumping on a vine. There is no basis then to think that the oldest preserved impress of a seal dating back to the beginning of the 15th century and showing only a goat was at the same time the oldest complete image of the Lublin coat of arms. In also must be stressed that the representation of the very goat should be considered a simplified version of the Lublin coat of arms, which from the very beginning could have presented a goat jumping on a vine. In the next part of the article a discussion is presented of the meaning of the Lublin coat of arms. Taking into consideration the Biblical (and also theological) meaning of the goat as well as that of the vine it may be recognized that the Lublin coat of arms means the Eucharist, Jesus Christ’s voluntary sacrifice, or a sacrifice of his life made by a martyr (the use of the motif of the goat and vine on the Gniezno Doors may suggest the person of St Adalbert here).

Szymon Okolski, heraldry, critical editions of neo-Latin texts
Opis:
Some Problems Concerning Any Future Edition of the Heraldic Work by Szymon OkolskiThe article discusses one of the fundamental problems in preparing critical editions of old literature: issues concerning quotations and other intertextual references. Orbis Polonus by Szymon Okolski constitutes excellent material for such a discussion. Though essentially an armorial, apart from typically heraldic and historical content, it contains extensive passages of moral instruction based on symbolic interpretation of given armorial bearings. Within such discourse, the readers receive much information from various fields of knowledge. This knowledge, however, is not systematised in any way; the author is simply citing information, famous sayings or poetic fragments that have occurred to him as related to the coat of arms he is writing about. This strategy results in an erudite discourse built from numerous quotations and references whose style researchers call “Lipsian.” Editorial work on such a text requires the editor to establish the scope and depth of intertextual references, which seldom are distinguished clearly, and to reconstruct the author’s reading list. Without that it would be impossible to eliminate errors that found their way into the only edition of the text so far, whose successive volumes were published by the printer Franciszek Cezary in 1641–45. This trivial statement of fact promises titanic work to any future editor as Okolski made use of books in three languages (Latin, Polish and Italian) and flaunted his knowledge of Greek literature, although he probably did not know Greek. His reading list comprises various works, from the Bible and classical literature, to medieval theological writings, to the newest literature of his day. Heraldic literature, histories and documents from family archives appear within the discourse next to works on natural history, emblems, occasional literature, excerpts from apophthegmatic collections, epistles or hagiographies. Difficulties with correct attribution of citations are aggravated by the fact that references to other texts are often indirect as Okolski used anthologies and compendia. This not only makes it difficult to find sources of quotations, but also raises questions as to the extent of possible corrections in cases where the quotes are distorted or erroneously attributed: often the distortions are due not to Okolski’s or the compositor’s inattentiveness but to uncritical copying of the intermediate text. The situation of a potential editor gets worse with popular references as the more popular a quote, the harder it is to establish its exact source. Changes to the original text made by the author intentionally to emphasise his point are yet another matter. Not all such instances are obvious and it is not always easy to determine what purpose they serve, as sometimes the only indication of their intentional nature is the fact that they reappear someplace else. The issues discussed here are but a fraction of problems that an editor of Orbis Polonus would encounter. The aim of the article is not, however, to present a comprehensive plan of the armorial’s critical edition but to point out some objective problems that hinder the process of establishing a proper version of any erudite neo-Latin text.

A directorium plays an important role in the pastoral life of a diocese. In Poland such writings have been known since 16th century. They are made up of a liturgical calendar, which lists local holidays, pastoral directives, as well as institutions and clergymen serving in a diocese. A directorium is issued by the decision of the bishop. In the early centuries, it was an opportunity for the bishop to print his coat of arms and an appropriate Latin poem on the first page of a directorium. Wojciech Skarszewski, the last bishop of Chełm, and then the first bishop of Lublin, had 34 directoria issued, which displayed the Skarszewskis’ coat of arms, i.e. the Leszczyc coat of arms. The poems presented in the directoria sometimes repeated themselves. Altogether, 21 original poems were issued in the directoria in Chełm and Lublin. Their authors remain unknown. The poems are in the form of epigrams, which are short texts, usually of a 4- or 6-verse stanzas, written in the elegiac couplet, of a two-part structure, where the first part refers to a coat of arms, and the other one refers to its allegorical explanation. This article presents the poems translated into Polish. Their analysis and translation is a new phenomenon as there is a lack of scientific works dealing with poems issued in the directoria.

Opis:
Puchaczów to nieduża osada położona 5 km od Łęcznej. W 1526 roku król Zygmunt I Stary wyraził zgodę na lokację miasta (prawa zabrane w 1870), pozostającego do pocz. XIXw. pod opieką benedyktynów z Sieciechowa. Parafię erygował biskup krakowski Piotr Tomicki w 1533 roku. Drewniana świątynia z tego czasu spłonęła w czasie pożaru miasta w 1623 roku. Nowa, wybudowana przy wsparciu arcybiskupa lwowskiego Andrzeja Próchnickiego, została konsekrowana w 1633 roku. Pod koniec XVIII wieku podjęto inicjatywę budowy kościoła murowanego, którą zwieńczyła konsekracja w 1786 roku. Na uwagę badaczy dziejów miasta zasługuje herb przedstawiający św. Jana Chrzciciela. Jest on z jednej strony inny, niż znane heraldyczne wyobrażenia tego świętego, z drugiej jest przykładem koegzystencji dwóch świętych w jednej osadzie, uwzględniając patrona właścicieli miasta − benedyktynów, św. Benedykta z Nursji.
Puchaczów is a small settlement, located five kilometers away from Łęczna, east of Lublin. In 1526, King Sigismund I allowed to locate a town here (city rights suspended in 1870), leaving it under the custody of the Benedictine Friars from Sieciechów, who stayed here until the early 19th century. The parish was erected by Bishop of Cracow Piotr Tomicki in 1533. The original wooden parish church burnt down in 1623. A new church, built with the support of the Bishop of Lviv Andrzej Próchnicki, was consecrated in 1633. An initiative to build a brick-and-stone church emerged in the late 18th century, leading to the consecration of a new temple in 1786. Researchers of the history of the town can be attracted by its coat-of-arms. It depicts St. John the Baptist. On the one hand, it is different from a lot of other heraldic representations of this saint, while also being an example of a peculiar "cohabitation" of two saints on one coat-of-arms. This other patron saint is Benedict of Nursia - the patron of the family that owned Puchaczów.

Opis:
Studya Heraldyczne (Heraldic Studies), a book published in 1890 by the scholar from Lvov Antoni Małecki may be the most important work in the accomplishments of the study into heraldry of the Polish lands. Obviously, not all his establishments and theses were proved by later research, yet the book offered a new and different look at the adaptation of heraldry in Poland. At the same time, it cleared the research area by successfully questioning the validity of a theory about runic genesis of Polish coat of arms in consequence of an invasion by the Scandinavians who established the Polish state and imposed its ruling class (the nobility). Małecki correctly separated proprietary marks, with their different functions, of Polish noblemen found on their seals to the turn of the fourteenth century from their later coats of arms. Małecki’s Studya Heraldyczne provoked an animated discussion on the origins of heraldry in Poland and the function of coat of arms. The present article emphasizes its most important elements and theses, touching also upon some social questions, especially the beginnings of kinship organization of the medieval Polish nobility. The discussion, bringing about many valuable observations, did not, however, lead to any decisive conclusions. An explanation of the emergence of coats of arms and names was given by the research of Janusz Bieniak in the last quarter of the twentieth century, who starting from a synthetic image drawn by A. Małecki, demonstrated a process of development of family coats of arms and names at the turn of the fourteenth century.
