Opis:
Eucalyptus globulus Labill is one of the most important economic forest species in Portugal, occupying an area of 875.10³ ha in a total forest area of 3346.10³ ha (Tomé et al., 2007). The main goal of this study is to develop a dominant height growth model for Eucalyptus, applicable throughout the country, representing an improve of the curves that are part of the whole stand model existing in Portugal, the GLOBULUS model (Tomé et al., 2001). The dominant height growth model will be built on a biological function formulated as a difference equation (Algebraic Difference Approach) to an all possible growth intervals data structure. The dynamic model proposed, obtains non biased and efficient estimates for the parameters. Comparing to the already available model, the last has the advantage of expressing the asymptote in weather variables functions, meaning that it is possible to reproduce the eucalyptus growth according to weather changes.

The studies were based on the empirical material collected in 23 stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn, Stare Jabłonki and Kudypy forest districts. Height growth model for beech was developed on the basis of measurements of 115 trees growing in the regeneration layer in pine stands. The developed function can be useful, inter alia, for building a 'network of site indices' for shelterwood regeneration. The studies on the height growth rate allow estimating the age at which undergrowth reaches the lower layer of a stand.

Seed orchards are expected to produce geneticaly improved seeds while maintaining a sufficiently large genetic diversity. Field trials comparing open-pollinated Scots pine progeny from seed orchards and commercial seed stands were established at five climaticaly different sites in Poland. The paper presents first height measurements obtained on trees at age 4. Seedlots differed significantly, but there was no strong evidence of better performance of clonal seed orchards progeny over the progeny of production seed stands. There was no distinct geographical trend in the origin of the best growing seedlots, but populations from the northern part of country tend to perform better than south-eastern ones. Progeny of the local production seed stands at their native environment were not the best, except in one case. A strong site effect reflecting a fertility gradient of the planting sites was found.

The paper presents an analysis of height growth phases of silver fir from the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Basing on bilateral relations between average and current height increments, age of their culmination and duration of main (juvenile and sprouting) phases was determined. Empirical data consisted of 61 sample trees that were subjected to the stem analysis. Juvenile stage of fir height growth lasts 30 years, while sprouting phase is quite long as it lasts 45 years on average. Mean age when analyzed trees reach the culmination of current and average height increment equals 50 and 70 years respectively. Course of height growth of fir resembles this of beech, which can be explained by shade tolerance of these species.

The article presents the results of the research on the peculiarity of response of Pinus sylvestris L. growth in height and diameter in young pine forest stand of the Left-Bank forest-steppe of Ukraine under the influence of surface fire that happened in May 2011. Forestry taxation, comparative ecology, standard dendrochronological methods were used. Response of trees was different for the height growth and the radial increment in the year of fire (2011). The radial growth got depressed in the year of fire; at the same time, the height of trees showed positive trend of growth against the background of favourable weather conditions. The growth in height was more ductile and completed its recovery to a particular level in 2014, unlike the radial growth, which recovered only in 2016. The relationships between radial growth on one side and stand sanitary state and height of bark char on the other were approximated by quadratic and cubic regression equations. Dynamics of pine growth depends on climatic factors also. Percentage of the late wood should be used to assess the condition of stands after fire. Research of post-pyrogenic development of forest ecosystems will allow more effective planning of forest management measures, and also allow the adjustment of the monitoring duration for pine forest stands damaged by fires.

Since the plus trees are selected based on phenotype, it is necessary to evaluate them in progeny test. The aim of this study is an indication of selecting elite mother trees based on the results from half-sib progeny test trials. As study sites, two Scots pine half-sib progeny tests were selected. During evaluation, the progenies had reached the age of 38 and 40 years, respectively. In both progeny trials, quantitative parameters and qualitative traits of Scots pine half-sib progenies were investigated. Based on these data, complex evaluation of half-sib families was carried out. We concluded that, Scots pine progenies at the age of 38 and 40 years in fresh and moist mixed forests are characterised by acceptable quality, with the survival being 25%–33% per progeny test trial. Based on a complex evaluation of 38- and 40-year-old half-sib progenies of plus trees, we proposed to select 31% of tested plus/mother trees as candidates for elite trees. Further, the list of candidates for elite trees was created with five plus trees from the Volyn region (26% of the total tested from the region) and four plus trees from the Lviv region (40% of the total tested from the region). With age, the share of the best and undesirable trees decreases, while the proportion of intermediate trees increases in both control trees and half-sib progenies. At the age of 38 and 40 years, the proportion of fast-growing offspring was from 0% to 36%, while the declining trend that was observed in previous years was being continued. Thus, due to the declining trend in the proportion of fast-growing offspring observed at the age of 38 and 40 years, we propose to select candidate trees for an elite group not early than after 40 years of test their progenies.

Opis:
The juvenile height growth of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied in 1095 spruce provenances included in the IUFRO inventory provenance test of 1964/68. Trees growing on the experimental site established in Krynica in the Beskid Sądecki Mts. (Carpathians) were measured at ca. 3-year intervals in the period 1969-1988, from the age of 6 years (i.e. 2 years of planting) to 25 years. The variability of tree height in this spruce population was assessed on the basis of the means expressed in units of standard deviation, calculated for each provenance and each geographical region of Krutzsch in successive years of measurement. Using the standardised units made it possible to characterise the dynamics of spruce growth in provenances from 95 geographical regions representing the whole European range of the species. The effects of geographical region, tree age and their interaction on the variability of height growth within this range were estimated using multi-way analysis of variance with replicated measurements. The regions showing similar spruce growth trends were grouped by using hierarchical cluster analysis. The results on the juvenile dynamics of height growth showed that spruce provenances from various geographical regions of Krutzsch differ significantly in their genetic reactivity. Based on this, several groups of regions were identified: (1) regions with average or weak but stable spruce growth characterised by no significant effects of age or genotype × age interaction in the whole measuring period, or regions with height growth improving with age; (2) regions of spruce provenances constituting a selection elite, with very good height growth in the whole measuring period or in its later part, characterised by no G × A interaction; (3) regions with varied genetic reactivity of height growth dynamics in the juvenile period, and regions of Scandinavian populations with poorest height growth in the whole measuring period. The studies proved that spruce provenances from the regions of Štiavnické Pohorie, Low Tatras (Slovakia), Masurian Lakeland, Augustów Lakeland, Podlasie, Silesian Beskid Mts., Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (Poland), Jutland (Denmark), Bihor Mts., Transylvania, and Eastern Carpathians (Romania) have a high selection value.

Opis:
Black alder is naturally widespread across all of Europe and has an increasing importance for forest ecosystems. Thanks to the considerable tolerance to adverse climatic and edaphic environmental conditions black alder is important both in open landscapes and can also be involved in the rehabilitation of disturbed soils. Assessment of site productivity is essential for providing a frame of reference for silvicultural diagnosis and prescription in order to ensure the sustainability of existing and newly established ecosystems. The most accepted method of evaluating site productivity is the site index (SI). The aim of the presented research was to develop the SI model for black alder in southern Poland. The developed SI model was used as a tool in order to test the research hypothesis assuming the increase in site productivity for black alder in southern Poland. The research material for development of SI model were stem analysis data from 180 research plots. Both, the local model parameter, which was estimated individually for every tree, and the other parameters estimated globally for the whole data set were estimated simultaneously. Changes in site productivity were analyzed on research plots and a set of 12,974 stands from the forest inventory database. Site indices calculated using the developed model are negatively correlated with age/ positively correlated with establishment year of the stands. This confirms the existence of the phenomenon of increasing site productivity for black alder. During the last century site productivity measured with site index increased on average 5 m. Therefore, black alder that belongs to the fast-growing tree species should be considered of the increasing importance for forest management.

The objectives of this study were a) to analyze the growth of seed origin saplings and young stump sprouts, emerged from small dimension stumps that were established and grew under different shade and site conditions in low elevation Fagus sylvatica L. s.l. stands, which are located in northeastern Greece, and b) to examine whether those stump sprouts can be incorporated in the regeneration process of beech stands growing in analogous marginal, for the species conservation conditions. Fifty-six seed and sprout origin saplings were cut. The sprouts had emerged from stumps having a basal diameter lower than 7 cm. For each of the 56 saplings, the mean annual height increment was calculated, dividing the height of the sapling by the age of its base. The different shade regimes were determined using hemispherical photography. Sprouts, which grew in deep shade in both site types, and in the moderate shade in medium productivity sites, exhibited height growth analogous to seed origin plants growing under moderate and deep shade in good productivity sites, and under moderate shade in medium productivity sites. Moreover, even though it is of no practical significance, stump sprouts that were established and grew under mod- erate shade in good productivity sites, showed higher height growth rates than all the other (compared) categories of seed and sprout origin saplings. Consequently, sprouts can be used in various types and forms of shelterwood silvicultural systems where regeneration plants are established and grow under shade con- ditions. A few years after the emergence of sprouts, as regeneration cuttings proceed through the gradual removal of the mother trees, sprouts will probably exhibit high growth rates as a result of the improved light conditions and their pre-existing root system

Opis:
Beech is the most important commercial species in the Caspian forests of Iran. Selective cutting and harvesting methods may adversely impact the quality of the residual trees, as the injuries make the trees prone to future disease, insect infestations or timber defects. Although attempts to better understand how wounds affect the residual trees have been made in many different contexts, there are still few investigations on uneven-aged forests. In this study the key objectives were to determine and model the healing rate for different wound parameters (width, length, and area of wound); to analyse the relationship between wound healing rate (WHR), tree diameter growth and tree height growth; to analyse the WHR in relation to wound position on the stem; and to analyse the relationship between WHR, width and area of wound in DBH classes and social classes, with the aim of enabling the prognosis of logging wounds. Wounded beech trees were examined immediately after selective logging and after a 5-year period. The WHR was 31.2 ±7.7 cm2 year-1. The wound width healing rate (18.4 ±3.4 mm·year-1) was significantly higher than the wound length healing rate (4.5 ±1.6 mm·year-1). Only 12% of wounds were completely closed after a 5-year period, and 15 years are necessary for the complete closure of 80% of total wounds. The ratio of wound area to stem area at wound height (RWS) showed a more pronounced effect on diameter than on height. Regression analysis showed that WHR was correlated negatively with wound area and width and positively with tree diameter growth, but no significant relationship was found between height growth and WHR parameters. The WHR was significantly higher at an upper position than at a lower one, and statistical tests showed that the tree vertical layering classes had a significant effect on WHR. Finally, it was shown that WHRs in upper-storey trees are significantly higher than in the middle and lower storeys.

This study was carried out in north−eastern Poland in 20 Scots pine stands with well−developed lower layer of pedunculate oak. In each stand, 5 highest oak trees were selected. Basing on the stem analysis, a growth model for oak undergrowth in Scots pine stands was elaborated. It can be used for determination the height growth rate in relation to the age and height of oak. Obtained model was compared to the already existing one for oaks growing without canopy [Bruchwald at el. 1996]. Growth rate of undergrowth oaks was significantly delayed in the initial period by 20−30 years.
