The stress distribution function in the surface layer is created as a result of using stress measurements on the surfaces of C45 steel samples after shot peening. Stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction with the use of the PSF-3M device from the Rigaku Company. For measuring residual stresses, subsequent layers of the top surface of the material were used as a basis, and these were obtained through electrochemical etching. The test results i.e. distance into the material, sample hardness, shot type, stress) were entered into the stepwise multiple regression program. A record of residual stresses was obtained in the form of the second-degree regression function of three independent variables with interactions. The obtained analytical form of the residual stress function was used in the FUNVAL3.EXE program to calculate the tabular values of stresses permeating into the material. For the analytical description of the stress distribution, the REGPOLY.EXE regression program was used, which creates a polynomial functional form of the residual stress distribution. The plot form of the residual stress distribution was obtained using the EXCEL Microsoft Office 2000 program.

This paper describes the study of ventilated car disc brakes stress-strain conditions and friction under the pressure using the ANSYS environment. Such influencing factors are taken into account in the course of research as angular speed value, the pressure of the pads on the disk, the nature of the load application, convection, thermal expansion, etc. Computer modelling of the stress field and the transient thermal field in the area of contact between the pads and the disk is provided by the method of sequential thermostructural communication of the intermediate states of the brake model directly in the ANSYS Coupled Field Transient environment. Besides, the ANSYS calculations were also performed based on the primitive assembly model of two steel blocks (the discrepancy was less than 3%) to determine the identity of the theoretical knowledge about the heating of bodies as a result of the work to overcome frictional forces. Finally, a high level of calculation results convergence by analytical formulas and computer modelling was established. Since this approach justified itself, its principles were taken as a basis in the calculations of ventilated disc brakes of cars, which significantly facilitates their application, knowing the area of the active part of the disc (the rest of the boundary conditions are typical and correspond to the normal operating modes of the vehicle).

Urban plants play a significant role in shaping the microclimate of the modern city, in addition to the recreational and aesthetic functions. Climate change and sharp changes in temperature affect the plant growth and development, so the question of studying the adaptive potential of the plant range in cities to temperature variability is relevant and important. Researchers and scientists around the world are studying the impact of biotic and abiotic factors on plants, but the variability of the plant organisms in the urban ecosystem is still unexplored. The data from the analysis of the frequency of occurrence plants in Kyiv green spaces show that Tilia cordata Mill., Aesculus hippocastanum L., Spiraea×vanhouttei (Briot) Zabel. and Carpinus betulus L. are most represented among the researched species. The article presents the results of the assessment of heat resistance by using the method of Matskov (1976) of 13 ornamental woody and shrubby species. Besides, the plants were separated into groups of tolerance to high temperatures. It was established that the T. cordata plants are characterized by the highest indicators of heat tolerance and they can be recommended for the creation of open landscapes. The A. hippocastanum, Catalpa bignonioides Walt., S. vanhouttei and Forsythia europaea Degen & Bald. plants are characterized by ‘moderate tolerance’ indicators to high temperature stress, therefore they can be recommended for the creation of semi-open/open landscape types. Consequently, for the formation of semi-open landscapes, using the species Platanus occidentalis L., Quercus robur L., Q. rubra, Syringa vulgaris L., Berberis thunbergii DC. and Ligustrum vulgare L. which were assessed as ‘moderately sensitive’, is recommended. The leaves of the Carpinus betulus L. and Ribes aureum Pursh. plants were most vulnerable to high temperature stress; therefore, the species are recommended for the formation of closed landscape types. Despite the comparative classification of ornamental plants in terms of heat-resistance, many issues remain unstudied and need to be clarified in terms of ecology, physiology, biochemistry and phytopathology for the plants of urban green spaces.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of heat stress on production performance and oxidative stress in different plumage colors of Japanese quail. For this purpose, a total of 100 birds were used in this study. The 25 birds belonged to Wild-type (n=25, grey), Tuxedo (n=25, black), Golden (n=25, yellow) and Recessive white (n=25). The birds were reared for 42 days in an environmentally controlled room at 39°C and relative humidity of 60-65%. The body weight, body weight gain (g/bird/day), and feed conversion ratio were not different between the groups (p>0.05). However, the feed intake (g/bird/day) of the Wild-type had a higher value than the Tuxedo (black) group counterparts between 15 and 21 days different (p<0.05). There was no significant effect of heat stress on the carcass traits (p>0.05). Spleen weights were different between the groups (p<0.05). The yellow group had the highest spleen weight. The highest MDA level was found in the Recessive White variety, followed by Wild-type (grey), Golden (yellow) and Tuxedo (black), respectively. However, there were no statistical differences amongst the groups (p>0.05). There was also no statistical significance in glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels (p>0.05). The heat shock protein 70 kDa (HSP70) level was significantly different between the groups (p<0.001). The highest percentage was observed in the Golden (5.06%) and the lowest in the White (1.43%) variety. There was no superior color variety of Japanese quail regarding fattening performance and carcass traits. It is conceivable that when considering the stress response of the different colors, the Golden group is more sensitive to stress due to the hepatic and cellular level of HSP70.

The temperature-stress state of the concrete facade wall with a window opening, which is the external enclosing structure of the room with a steel heating device, was investigated by the method of numerical modeling. Estimated studies were performed for winter period when the heating system of the building is functioning. According to the results of solving the system of equations of thermal stress and equation of thermal conductivity, the temperature distribution over the wall volume and distribution of normal and tangential stresses were determined. Areas of the wall where these stresses are maximum were identified. The research was performed for cases of both, absence and presence of a heat-insulating layer on the outer surface of the facade wall. From comparison of the results obtained for these two options, it follows that the external thermal insulation coating not only helps to reduce dissipative heat loss through the facade wall, but also reduces the absolute values of stresses in the concrete wall arising resulting from temperature deformations. In some cases, the sign of stresses changes from stretching (wall without external insulation) to compressive (wall with insulation).

The aim of the article was to explore pet welfare in Municipal Adaptation Plans (MAPs), based on a literature review and case studies of 40 MAPs accepted in Poland as part of the “Let’s Feel the Climate” project, supported by the Polish Ministry of Environment in 2017–2019. The study summarizes the concept of climate change and the importance of adaptation measures with particular emphasis on urban heat islands and heat stress, acknowledged by climate change literature, and outlines pet welfare in the context of thermal comfort and threats caused by heat stress. Because the authors subsequently presented an empirical study of the 40 accepted MAPs, they also discussed the role and legal nature of MAPs. The main hypothesis of this survey of Polish MAPs was that pet welfare in the context of their thermal comfort is an example of the adaptive measures clearly stipulated in Polish MAPs, which was examined after presenting the MAPs’ findings. The starting point was the assumption that the welfare of pets should also be assessed from the perspective of their thermal comfort – a new element of broadly understood animal welfare. This is due to the fact that pets are exposed to the risk of heat stress resulting from urban heat islands and, just like people, have to endure the inconvenience of extreme weather phenomena, which is impossible without the support of amenities such as drinkers or water shelters and the development of green and blue infrastructure.
Celem przeprowadzonego badania była analiza dobrostanu zwierząt domowych w miejskich planach adaptacji (MPA) w oparciu o przegląd literatury oraz studium przypadku 40 MPA przyjętych w Polsce na podstawie projektu „Wczujmy się w klimat”, prowadzonego przy wsparciu Ministerstwa Środowiska w latach 2017–2019. W opracowaniu podsumowano koncepcję zmian klimatycznych i znaczenie działań adaptacyjnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem miejskiej wyspy ciepła i stresu cieplnego, które zostały rozpoznane w literaturze dotyczącej zmian klimatycznych, a także nakreślono dobrostan zwierząt w kontekście komfortu termicznego i zagrożeń spowodowanych stresem cieplnym. Ze względu na to, że przedstawiono empiryczne badanie 40 zaakceptowanych MPA, zdecydowano również o roli i charakterze prawnym MPA. Główną hipotezą badania polskich MPA było to, że dobrostan zwierząt domowych w kontekście ich komfortu termicznego jest uwzględniony jako rodzaj działań adaptacyjnych, co następnie poddano pod dyskusję po przedstawieniu wyników badania. Punktem wyjścia było założenie, że dobrostan zwierząt domowych należy oceniać także przez pryzmat ich komfortu cieplnego, który jest obecnie nowym elementem szeroko rozumianego dobrostanu zwierząt. Wynika to z faktu, że zwierzęta towarzyszące nam w miastach są narażone na stres cieplny i jako najbliżsi towarzysze człowieka, podobnie jak ludzie, muszą znosić niedogodności ekstremalnych zjawisk pogodowych, co jest niemożliwe bez istnienia takich udogodnień, jak poidła czy wodopoje oraz rozwój zielonej i niebieskiej infrastruktury.

The paper presents FEM approach for comparative analyses of wall connections applied in cast grates used for charge transport in furnaces for heat and thermal-chemical treatment. Nine variants of wall connection were compared in term of temperature differences arising during cooling process and stresses caused by the differences. The presented comparative methodology consists of two steps. In first, the calculations of heat flow during cooling in oil for analysed constructions were carried out. As a result the temperature distributions vs cooling time in cross-sections of analysed wall connections were determined. In the second step, based on heat flow analyses, calculations of stresses caused by the temperature gradient in the wall connections were performed. The conducted calculations were used to evaluate an impact of thermal nodes reduction on maximum temperature differences and to quantitative comparison of various base design of the cast grate wall connection in term of level of thermal stresses and their distribution during cooling process. The obtained results clearly show which solution of wall connection should be applied in cast grate used for charge transport in real constructions and which of them should be avoided because the risk of high thermal stresses forming during cooling process.

A growing urban development pattern can have both positive and negative impacts. One of them is the thermal discomfort in the form of heat stress. Heat stress is the maximum condition of the human body to receive the heat exposure to various activities. This study analyzed the thermal comfort in Yogyakarta City based on the Discomfort Index (DI) method. The DI method is commonly used in tropical climates using the parameters that include average air temperature and humidity. The data consists of secondary data obtained from Geophysics Station Gamping in 2004-2020 and Climatology Station Mlati in 2017-2020. The result of DI indicated that the highest value occurred in the wet moon climate type in April, with 25.63 °C. Therefore, the conditions showed that more than 50% of people in the city of Yogyakarta fall into an uncomfortable category with an average index of 24.97 °C, which can lead to heat stress. Environmental engineering can be employed to decrease the heat stress potential and improve the thermal comfort for Yogyakarta’s urban community, which is public and private open space, plant road shade vegetation, implement a green façade (vertical garden), as well as improve people’s living behavior and use appropriate clothing.

Opis:
A general model is developed, and on its basis, there are special models formulated of the grinding process with crossed axes of the tool and workpiece with a profile in the form of a circle arc. A new method of control of the grinding process is proposed, which will provide processing by equidistant curves, and the amount of cutting of a circle equal to the allowance. This will increase the productivity and quality of grinding. The presented method of grinding implements the processing with the spatial contact line of the tool and workpiece. When the axes are crossed, the contact line is stretched, which leads to an increase of the contact area and, accordingly, to a decrease of the temperature in the processing area. This allows processing of workpieces with more productive cutting conditions.

Ocena najwyższego dopuszczalnego obciążenia cieplnego organizmu w środowisku gorącym wyznaczana jest za pomocą wskaźnika WBGT. Nazwa wskaźnika WBGT pochodzi od nazw czujników wykorzystywanych do pomiarów przesiewowych parametrów środowiska: do pomiaru temperatury w stanie wilgotnym (temperatura wilgotnego termometru – Wet Bulb) oraz pomiaru temperatury poczernionej kuli (Globe Temperature). WBGT jako wskaźnik używany do oceny obciążenia cieplnego organizmu do 2017 r. był powiązany z wydatkiem energetycznym i przedstawiony w postaci tabel w polskim wydaniu normy PN-EN 27243:2005 (oraz PN-EN 27243:2005P). W 2017 r. normę zastąpiono dokumentem EN ISO 7243:2017, a w styczniu 2018 r. zostało zatwierdzone polskie tłumaczenie normy PN-EN ISO 7243:2018-01. W artykule zamieszczono opis metodyki prowadzenia badań wskaźnika WBGT zgodnie z zapisami PN-EN ISO 7243:2018-01. Zakres tematyczny artykułu obejmuje zagadnienia zdrowia oraz bezpieczeństwa środowiska pracy będące przedmiotem badań z zakresu nauk o zdrowiu oraz inżynierii środowiska.
The assessment of maximum allowable heat load of a body in a hot environment is determined using the WBGT index. The name of the WBGT index is derived from the measurement of two parameters: natural wet-bulb temperature and black globe temperature. WBGT as an indicator used to assess the heat load (until 2017) was related to the metabolic heat production and placed in the form of tables in the Polish edition of Standard No. PN-EN 27243:2005 (and PN-EN 27243:2005P). In 2017, this standard was replaced by Standard No. EN ISO 7243:2017, and in January 2018, the Polish translation of Standard No. PN-EN ISO 7243:2018-01 was approved. This article describes the methodology of conducting WBGT research according to Standard No. PN-EN ISO 7243:2018-01. This article discusses the problems of occupational safety and health, which are covered by health sciences and environmental engineering.

The continuous monitoring of the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and land cover change is imperative for an inquiry into the potential impact of LST on human well-being, including urban outdoor thermal comfort in Lagos State, Nigeria. Using Landsat imagery, this study assessed land cover and LST changes from 1984 to 2019. Land cover was extracted, LST was determined from Landsat imageries and the land cover changes were linked to LST using the contribution index (CI). Afterwards, the universal thermal climate index (UTCI) was calculated to determine the heat stress levels. Findings confirm the presence of urban sprawl and new growth areas in previously rural Local Government Areas (LGAs) eastward, northward and westward of Lagos metropolis and in regions which lie on the fringe of the state’s border with Ogun State. Also, a very strong link between high LST intensities and increasing concentration of urban areas in rapidly growing LGAs has been observed. This link further confirms the increased warming of the state, with an increase in mean LST of 2.16°C during 1984–2019. The UTCI which was used to gauge the influence of LST on outdoor thermal comfort ranged from moderate to strong heat stress levels. This study helps to strengthen the case for definite policies and actions which should be aimed at achieving moderate urban development through increased urban tree canopy/green infrastructure provision and carbon sequestration activities in urban design/landscape design, in Lagos State.

Opis:
A revalorised Burzyński’s hypothesis was suggested for determination of effort of construction elements in thermally variable load conditions. Using the suggested hypothesis, surfaces of the beginning of plasticity for the heat resistant St12T steel were determined. Two numerical simulations of thermo-mechanical loads of the turbine vane made of St12T steel were performed. The result of analyses was determination of the effort states of a vane acc. to Huber-Mises-Hencky’s hypotheis and according to the suggested revalorised Burzyński’s hypothesis.
W pracy zaproponowano zrewaloryzowaną hipotezę Burzyńskiego do określania wytężenia elementów konstrukcji w termicznie zmiennych warunkach obciążenia. Wykorzystując proponowaną hipotezę wyznaczono powierzchnie początku plastyczności dla żarowytrzymałej stali St12T. Przeprowadzono dwie symulacje numeryczne termo-mechanicznych obciążeń łopatki turbiny wykonanej ze stali St12T. Efektem wykonanych analiz było określenie stanów wytężenia łopatki wg hipotezy Hubera-Misesa-Hencky’ego oraz wg proponowanej zrewaloryzowanej hipotezy Burzyńskiego.

The main goal of this paper was to assess the intensity of heat stress in Lower Silesia, Poland, during selected weather events characterized by high air temperatures. The complex impact of weather on the thermal load of the human organism is presented using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). The analysis was carried out for the 2015 and 2018 summer seasons and compared with the multiannual period of 1971–2018. It was based on meteorological data from the IMGW-PIB stations of Wrocław, Jelenia Góra and Śnieżka. In order to examine how heat conditions affect UTCI in different geographical regions, stations located at different altitudes and representing the lowlands, the lower mountain zone and the summit zone of the Sudetes Mountains were considered. The research showed that during the most extreme thermal events, UTCI values in the lowlands and the lower mountain zones can be among the highest heat stress classes. In the summit zone, the maximum UTCI values are usually classed as ‘no thermal stress’.

High temperature stress can be detrimental to plants, resulting in reduced fruit yield and increased incidences of fruit disorders. One strategy that farmers can use to maintain or increase their yields in the face of a changing climate is to adjust of farm climate by using shade net on the trees. Such, the use of shade netting on Washington navel orange planted on the sandy soil in Al-Nubaria region, Egypt were studied during two successive seasons, either using a permanent shade throughout all the season or using a moveable shade for certain period from the first of March until the end of June for every season. Growth (No. of shoots/one meter branch, No. of leaves/shoot, shoot length and chlorophyll content of the leaves, leaf area and tree canopy), macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na) content in the leaves, fruit characteristics (number, weight, diameter, peel thickness, total soluble solids, total acidity and ascorbic acid), yield and crop efficiency, were determined. It can be concluded that covering Washington navel orange trees grown on sandy soil with shade net especial covering the trees for certain period was very effective at protecting orange trees and led to improve the growth, increase the yield and maintain fruit quality.
