Opis:
This essay refutes the view that the Athenians of the Classical period were hostile to legal expertise. The Athenians had much respect for the Areopagus and the Exegetai, who were experts in law and religion. The legal expert Phanodemus was often praised and entrusted with important responsibilities. Litigants in public cases often show their legal knowledge by copious citation of statutes. They sometimes accuse their opponents of deceitful use of rhetoric never attack them for legal expertise. In the speech of Lysias Against Nicomachus, the accuser charges the defendant with illegally modifying the rules about sacrifices but never arouses suspicions about his legal expertise.

Opis:
The chitinozoan successions (zonation) in the Llandovery and Wenlock deposits, accumulated along the northern shelf edge of the Livonian Basin, an embayment of the Palaeobaltic sea, is studied and used for time-rock correlation of the area. Analysis of the ranges of 180 taxa from 44 sections (41 of them well-sections) by graphic correlation revealed largely compatible successions of taxa as well as local stratigraphic gaps in both shelf and basin sections. Alternatives to graphic methods also produced composite standards based on stratigraphic relationships (below, co-occurring, or above) of taxonomic ranges and considered as palaeontological time scales (composites) similar to zonal schemes. We constructed such a scale using the DISTR algorithm to analyse the distribution of 84 taxa and recognized 41 datum planes. This scale includes the traditional regional and global chitinozoan zones and the associated chronological standards (including regional stages). The BioGraph and DISTR algorithms were used to study diversity changes, and to illustrate patterns of originations and extinctions of the chitinozoans. Correlation plots between composite standard and particular sections reveal variations in sedimentary rock accumulation patterns, supporting the results of sequence stratigraphic analysis of the study interval.

Opis:
The article presents the concepts of the assessment of harmfulness of vibrations generated from various sources. Domestic and foreign standard procedures were discussed, including ISO proposals. It has been pointed out that all procedures can be considered as indirect ones, that they refer to vibrations affecting humans, and not those resulting from the dynamic response induced in individual human organs. The same applies to the criteria for determining the loss of life in communication collisions. It was pointed out that in the literature we find attempts of a direct approach, the essence of which is to study the dynamic reaction of individual human organs inscribed in the one or twodimensional model. The results of own tests of a person subjected to intensive oscillatory procedures were presented in order to identify the stiffness model proposed to assess the harmfulness of industrial type vibrations. It has been shown that two-dimensional models can be suitable here.

To reduce human casualties associated with explosive ordnance disposal, a wide range of protective wear has been designed to shield against the blast effects of improvised explosive devices and munitions. In this study, 4 commercially available bomb suits, representing a range of materials and armor masses, were evaluated against 0.227 and 0.567 kg of spherical C-4 explosives to determine the level of protection offered to the head, neck, and thorax. A Hybrid III dummy, an instrumented human surrogate [1], was tested with and without protection from the 4 commercially available bomb suits. 20 tests with the dummy torso mounted to simulate a kneeling position were performed to confirm repeatability and robustness of the dummies, as well as to evaluate the 4 suits. Correlations between injury risk assessments based on past human or animal injury model data and various parameters such as bomb suit mass, projected area, and dummy coverage area were drawn.

W artykule zaprezentowano sprzętowe implementacje dwóch detektorów narożników - detektora Harrisa i detektora FAST - w strukturach FPGA.
Many contemporary computer and machine vision applications require finding corresponding points in image sequences. For that purpose many point feature detectors have been developed. Most of them detect corners, i.e. points that mark object boundaries, or boundaries of significant object parts as features. In this paper there are presented the implementations of two popular corner detectors - the Harris [2] and FAST [3] corner detector - in FPGA structure. The proposed solutions enable processing of 512x512 pixel, 8-bit grayscale image data with the speed of over 400 frames per second (FAST), and over 350 frames per second (Harris). The processing speeds are the same or even better than those that can be achieved using modern high-performance PCs. FPGA implementations, however, are less power-hungry, relatively inexpensive and more compact, which is critical in many applications. Our implementations are targeted at applications in mobile robotics. The paper contains a short description of the implemented algorithms, block diagrams of the implemented architectures, as well as the summary of the FPGA resources required by both implementations. A preliminary analysis of performance of the implemented algorithms with regards to feature repeatability is also carried out. The results show that the implementation of the FAST algorithm has better performance in terms of speed. Also, the FAST algorithm performs better on image sequences with strong structure - urban, interiors etc. The Harris detector implementation, although in general slower and a little more resource-hungry than the FAST implementation (requires hardware multipliers), demonstrates better performance on poorly structured scene sequences - grass, dirt roads etc. These conclusions are consistent with the results of research carried out before [3, 4].

Fern remains of matoniacean affinity were found in the Lower Hettangian strata of lacustrine/backswamp origin from the Niekłań PGI 1 borehole (central Poland, Holy Cross Mts.). The preserved fragments have been identified as Matonia braunii (Göppert, 1841) Harris, 1980. The remains suggest a rather small, low-growth plant with palmately compound fronds. The sori contain at least 5 sporangia preserved with well-developed annuli. The spores are triangular, trilete and kyrtomate, with a thin and smooth surface corresponding with dispersed Dictyophyllidites mortoni (de Jersey, 1959) Playford et Dettmann, 1965. Based on the gross morphology of sterile and fertile pinnae, suggestions made by Harris (1980) on the synonymy of Phlebopteris braunii (Göppert, 1841) Hirmer et Hörhammer, 1936 with P. muensteri Schenk, 1867 (Hirmer and Hörhammer, 1936) and their referral to Matonia braunii is proved and confirmed in this paper. The fern occurs in strata indicating a warm and humid climate and approaching transgression resulting in a high water table and the enhanced accumulation of organic matter.

Opis:
Herein we describe deinonychosaurian (Dinosauria: Theropoda) tracks in the Lower Cretaceous Hekou Group at sites I and II of Liujiaxia Dinosaur National Geopark, Gansu Province, China. The site preserves 71 didactyl tracks, the largest concentration of deinonychosaurian tracks in Asia. The tracks pertain to a new dromaeopodid ichnospecies: Dromaeosauripus yongjingensis ichnosp. nov., which is diagnosed by: a digital pad formula of x−1−3−4−x and a mean divarication angle between digits III and IV of 19°, and having the proximal portion of digit II contacting the anterior margin of a large, rounded metatarsophalangeal pad. Six Dromaeosauripustrackways from site II comprise at least two, and possibly three, turning trackways in which the track maker(s) turned without slowing down. None of the Dromaeosauripus trackways are parallel or closely spaced, suggesting that they were made by solitary track makers. Estimates of dromaeopodid track−maker sizes are between 61–300 cm, well within the size range established by body fossils of both dromaeosaurids and troodontids.

Although recent discoveries from Lower Cretaceous sediments in northeastern China have greatly improved our understanding of the initial stages of avian diversification in eastern Asia, the early evolution of Aves elsewhere on the continent remains poorly understood. In 2004, a collaborative field effort directed by personnel from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and Carnegie Museum of Natural History recovered multiple partial to nearly complete avian skeletons from outcrops of the Lower Cretaceous Xiagou Formation exposed in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province, China. Here we describe a thrush−sized partial skeleton comprised of a fragmentary pelvic girdle and largely complete hind limbs. A phylogenetic analysis of 20 avian ingroup taxa and 169 anatomical characters places the specimen in Enantiornithes, and within that clade, in Euenantiornithes. When coupled with additional recent discoveries from the Changma Basin, the new skeleton improves our understanding of early avian evolution and diversification in central Asia.

Bivalves, oysters, mussels, and clams are important constituents of riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Their shells and soft tissues provide information on the environments in which they live. Since they are filter feeders, they also are factors in improving water quality through removal of particulate matter from the water column. Finally, they are a valuable food source that has substantial economic value. Hence, characterization of shells and soft tissues is useful for improved understanding of these factors. Here, we used X-ray microprobes and computed microtomography facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source to investigate elemental distributions in bivalves taken from locations around New York, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. The results form the initial basis for compilation of a database of relevant parameters that can serve for tracking environmental changes and for assessing toxicity of particular metals. The work was enabled by active collaboration with students from the several regions, community groups, and research scientists. The collaboration was facilitated through use of web conferencing between Brookhaven National Laboratory and the varied locations.

Finely−bedded lacustrine deposits of the Aptian (Lower Cretaceous) Xiagou Formation exposed in the Changma Basin of Gansu Province, northwestern China, have yielded numerous fossil vertebrate remains, including approximately 100 avian specimens. Though the majority of these birds appear referable to the ornithuromorph Gansus yumenensis, a number of enantiornithine fossils have also been recovered. Here we report on a specimen consisting of a complete, three−dimensionally preserved sternum, furcula, and sternal ribs that represents a second ornithuromorph taxon from the Xiagou Formation at Changma. The fossil exhibits morphologies that distinguish it from all previously−known Xiagou birds and demonstrate that it represents a derived non−ornithurine member of Ornithuromorpha. Though it is morphologically distinct from the equivalent elements of all other described ornithuromorphs, the material is too incomplete to justify the erection of a new taxon. Nonetheless, it increases the taxonomic diversity of the Xiagou avifauna, thereby expanding our knowledge of Early Cretaceous avian diversity and evolution.

The power of photocurrent spectroscopy to study the electronic properties of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots is described. From comparison of results from different samples it is shown that photocurrent provides a direct means to measure absorption spectra of quantum dots. Studies in high electric field enable the electron-hole vertical alignment to be determined. Most surprisingly this is found to be opposite to that predicted by all recent predictions. Comparison with theory shows that this can only be explained if the dots contain significant amounts of gallium, and have a severely truncated shape. The nature of the ground and excited state transitions, carrier escape mechanisms from dots, in-plane wave function anisotropies and the modal gain of a quantum dot laser are determined.

This paper represents a synergy analysis of combining fMRI only deception data with each of the three individual physiological parameters that are used in polygraph. They include the electro-dermal response (EDR), pneumo, and cardio measurements. In addition, we compared the detection accuracy analysis using each single parameter by itself. The fMRI score and each individual polygraph parameter score on individual subjects were averaged to establish an overall score.
