Opis:
Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) are primary brain tumours which evolve very slowly in time, but inevitably cause patient death. In this paper, we consider a PDE version of the previously proposed ODE model that describes the changes in the densities of functionally alive LGGs cells and cells that are irreversibly damaged by chemotherapy treatment. Besides the basic mathematical properties of the model, we study the possibility of the existence of travelling wave solutions in the framework of Fenichel’s invariant manifold theory. The estimates of the minimum speeds of the travelling wave solutions are provided. The obtained analytical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of banana waste biochar on the physiological traits and growth of Paspalum vaginatum under three water treatments (100%, 80%, and 60% of the water holding capacity (WHC) of the soil). A plastic pot experiment was done for the germination of paspalum vaginatum. The treatments were the addition of compost, banana waste biochar, or banana waste biochar and compost combination to the soil. We used multiple factor analysis (MFA) to reveal the relationship between the effect of banana waste biochar and the three water regimes on physiological data. The findings revealed that banana waste biochar had an important impacts on all traits under various water supply conditions. The photon yield of PSII of control treatment at three water regimes had the lowest response compared to amended treatments. Changes were observed in chlorophyll pigment among different treatments.

Plants must continually calibrate their growth in response to the environment throughout their whole life cycle. Revealing the regularity of plant early growth and development is of great significance to plant genetic modification. It was previously demonstrated that loss of two key light signaling transcription factors, FHY3 and FAR1, can cause a stunted stature in the plant adult stage, and numerous defense response genes can be continuously activated. In this study, we performed a time-course transcriptome analysis of the early 4 weeks of leaf samples from wild plants and their fhy3 and far1 transcription factors. By comparative transcriptome analysis, we found that during the early 4 weeks of plant growth, plants primarily promoted morphogenesis by organizing their microtubules in the second week. In the third week, plants began to trigger large- scale defense responses to resist various external stresses. In the fourth week, increased photosynthetic efficiency promoted rapid biomass accumulation. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis of FHY3 and FAR1 revealed that the two light signaling transcription factors may be originally involved in the regulation of genes during embryonic development, and in the later growth stage, they might regulate gene expression of some defense-related genes to balance plant growth and immunity. Remarkably, our yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation experiments showed that FAR1 interacts with the immune signaling factor EDS1. Taken together, this study demonstrates the major biological processes occurring during the early 4 weeks of plant growth. The light signaling transcription factors, FHY3 and FAR1, may integrate light signals with immune signals to widely regulate plant growth by directly interacting with EDS1.

Opis:
Cypress (Cupressus funebris Endl.) is an important tree species in the subtropical regions of China; it is also a major tree species for afforestation and forest land restoration under low-fertility soil conditions. Cypress is considered a calcicolous tree, and its growth and development can be promoted significantly by exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) in the soil. However, most of the subtropical regions have low-fertility acidic soils, in which Ca2+ gradually becomes a limiting element for Cypress growth. In this study, different concentrations of Ca2+ fertilizer were added under fertile soil (3 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) and low-fertility soil (0 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) conditions. Cypress clones responded differently to Ca2+ addition in different soil conditions. The seedling height and dry matter quality of Cypress in fertile soil were significantly greater than those in low-fertility soil, but plant height and dry biomass did not differ significantly among Ca2+ treatments. The accumulation efficiencies of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and Ca all differed significantly among the Ca2+ treatments. In low-fertility soil, the addition of 3 g kg-1 Ca2+ significantly promoted development of roots 0.5–2 mm in diameter, and both the C1 and C2 clones achieved their highest N, P and Ca accumulation efficiencies. When the Ca2+ concentration increased to 6 g kg−1, the seedling height, dry matter quality and root development were lower than those of the 3 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. In the fertile soil, the addition of Ca2+ significantly inhibited development of roots 0.5–1 mm in diameter. The highest N accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 0 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment, and the highest Ca accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 6 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. Seedling height, root dry weight, roots 0–1.5 mm in diameter and Ca accumulation showed a significant interaction effect between NPK fertilizer and Ca2+. Therefore, Ca accumulation was more efficient in low-fertility soils. Under low-fertility soil conditions, the addition of CaSO4 can promote the root development of seedlings and advance and prolong the fast growth period of seedling height. Cypress clones can be used as an important tree species for afforestation under low-fertility soil conditions, especially under calcareous soil conditions.

Coexisting microorganisms are abundant in nature. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a group of beneficial microorganism living around the roots of plants which are able to confer beneficial effects on plant growth. Streptomyces sp. is a gram-positive bacteria as PGPR that can promote plant growth and enhance tolerance in adverse environment. This research was aimed to study the effects of plant growth promotion and stress tolerance of Streptomyces sp. in Arabidopsis and Brassica sp. The amount of indole-acetic acid (IAA) and phosphate solubility were assessed from isolated bacterial. Plant growth promotion was examined in 10-days old seedling with three independent experiments. Our results showed that Streptomyces sp. produced moderate levels of IAA and it was able to solubilize phos- phate. Inoculation of Streptomyces sp. enhanced lateral root number, fresh weight and chlorophyll content in Arabidopsis thaliana. Moreover, the inoculation of Streptomyces sp. significantly increased vegetative growth on Arabidopsis and Brassica sp. by producing higher fresh weight and chlorophyll content. Streptomyces sp. also enhanced tolerance to abiotic stress in Arabidopsis and Brassica sp. by increasing fresh weight under condition of salt and heat stress. Under salt stress, inoculation of Streptomyces sp. in Arabidopsis in- duced activity of catalase enzyme and decreased hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O2 ) and malondial- dehyde (MDA) production. In the molecular levels, Streptomyces sp. induced protein accu- mulations in Arabidopsis including nitrogen assimilation (GS1), carbohydrate metabolism (cFBPase), and the light-harvesting chlorophyll (Lhcb1) protein.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to estimate the impacts of various deficit irrigation regimes (DIR) as 100 (control), 75 (medium DIR, MDIR) and 50% (severe DIR, SDIR) of field capacity (FC) on the growth and photosynthetic traits of five rootstocks (two vigorous seedling including Pyrus betulifolia and Dargazi seedling (P. communis L.) as well as three clonal semi-dwarfing rootstocks including OH×F69, OH×F87 and Pyrodwarf in 2016. Although in all studied rootstocks the growth and photosynthetic parameters negatively affected under MDIR and SDIR conditions, but P. betulifolia and Pyrodwarf rootstocks had the better growth rate, chlorophylls, total carbohydrates, relative water content, sub-stomatal CO₂ (Ci ), photosynthesis rate (PN) and instantaneous water use efficiency compared to others. Therefore, the use of P. betulifolia and Pyrodwarf (as drought tolerance rootstocks) could be more appropriate under various DIR conditions.

Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.

Shrubs are widespread at higher altitudes and latitudes. Dendrochronology of shrub growth has been intensively studied in the circumpolar Arctic, Mediterranean and Patagonia. However, relatively little is known about shrub growth responses to climate change on the Tibetan Plateau. Herein, we investigate climate sensitivity of Salix oritrepha growth along a north–south (35–39° N) latitudinal gradient on the north- eastern Tibetan Plateau. Four S. oritrepha shrub sites were selected for dendrochronology study. Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to estimate strength of the climate sensitivity of the growth time series at each site. We found that not all of the site chronologies show consistent variations. Despite of this, its ra- dial growth was primarily limited by the July mean temperature across the latitudinal gradient, and warming summer climate tends to increase the growth of S. oritrepha on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.

Plant responses to glyphosate applied at different doses were examined for one glyphosate resistant (R) and one glyphosate susceptible (S) population of Conyza albida and C. bonarienis. Growth rates and development stages of five R C. albida and three R C. bonarienis populations were also compared with those of their respective S counterparts to investigate the possible impact of the glyphosate resistance trait on their fitness. The GR50 values for C. albida R (3.94−5.22 kg a.i. · ha−1) and S (0.24−0.31 kg a.i. · ha−1) populations were higher than those of C. bonariensis R (0.60−1.51 kg a.i. · ha−1) and S (0.10−0.13 kg a.i. · ha−1). The growth rate (slope b) of one R C. albida population was lower than the respective S and other R populations, while growth rates of most R and S C. bonariensis populations were similar. Some R populations showed inconsistent differences in some development stages when compared to those of the S ones, which cannot be attributed to the glyphosate resistance trait.

Declining soil fertility is one of the main causes of low yields of maize. Farmers apply low rates of unbalanced nutrients leading to further nutrient mining. A randomized complete block nutrient omission trial with six replications was therefore set to determine maize response to the application of a wide range of nutrients from inorganic fertilizers on Ferralsols. The treatments were NK, NP, PK, NPK, and NPK + CaMgZnBS. The results showed that application of PK fertilizer resulted in low crop growth rate (CGR), and relative growth rate (RGR), and biomass compared to other treatments. Application of a wider range of nutrients (NPK + CaMgZnBS treatment) improved maize growth and yield compared to other treatments. In terms of grain response, Urea application recorded the highest yield (1800 kg/ha) followed by Triple Superphosphate (1300 kg/ha) then Muriate of potash (1100 kg/ha) and least by a combined application of secondary nutrients and micronutrients (ZnBMgCaS = 400 kg/ha). Highest agronomic efficiency of 32.5 kg grain /kg P applied was recorded due to P followed by K (27.5 kg grain /kg K) and least by N (15 kg grain /kg N). Based on the combined effect, application of N-P-K based fertilizers could give better yields. Use of micronutrients should be assessed further for conclusive recommendations.

Opis:
Root-knot nematodes have become a grave menace to the lucrative production of cucumber throughout the world. These nematodes are mainly controlled by applying nematicides, but their use is often associated with hazards. Alternatively, the use of nematode resistant cultivars is considered to be innocuous and economically feasible. For their fitness as nematode-suppressive crops, the reduction in growth and yield parameters of these cultivars must be assessed. As there is little documented data about the effects of Meloidogyne incognita on the damage of cucumber, therefore, in the present study, the effects of M. incognita were evaluated on growth and yield parameters of fifteen cucumber cultivars. M. incognita significantly negatively affected the growth and yield parameters of all the cucumber cultivars. Shoot and root lengths and shoot weights of all the cultivars were significantly reduced as a result of nematode infection. Maximum reductions in these parameters were recorded in highly susceptible cultivars followed by susceptible ones, while the reductions were minimal in resistant followed by moderately resistant cultivars. On the contrary, the infection by M. incognita resulted in an increase in root weights of all the cultivars. The increase was found to be the maximum in highly susceptible cultivars followed by susceptible and moderately susceptible cultivars. Likewise, the minimum increase was observed in the resistant cultivars followed by moderately resistant cultivars. Similarly, significant variations in yield parameters among fifteen cucumber cultivars were also recorded as a result of M. incognita infection. In the case of highly susceptible cultivars, the reductions in yield parameters were maximum, whereas the reductions in resistant and moderately resistant cultivars were found to be minimum. As cultivars Long Green, Marketmore, Pioneer-II, Dynasty and Summer Green experienced no significant damage compared to susceptible cucumber cultivars and therefore, they are approved for cultivation in nematode infested soils.

Opis:
Since it is known that various cell lines may ex-press different behaviours on the scaffolds surface, a comprehensive analysis using various cellular mo-dels is needed to evaluate the biomedical potential of developed biomaterials under in vitro conditions. Thus, the aim of this work was to fabricate bone scaffolds composed of a chitosan-agarose matrix reinforced with nanohydroxyapatite and compare the biological response of two cell lines, i.e. mouse calvarial preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 Subclone 4) and human foetal osteoblasts (hFOB 1.19). Within this study, the osteoblasts number on the scaffold surface and the osteogenic markers level produced by MC3T3-E1 and hFOB 1.19 cells were determined. Furthermore, changes in calcium and phosphorous ions concentrations in the culture media dedicated for MC3T3-E1 and hFOB 1.19 were estimated after the biomaterial incubation. The obtained results proved that the fabricated biomaterial is characterized by biocompatibility and osteoconductivity since it favours osteoblasts attachment and growth. It also supports the production of osteogenic markers (collagen, bALP, osteocalcin) by MC3T3-E1 and hFOB 1.19 cells. Interestingly, the developed biomaterial exhibits different ion reactivity values in the two culture media dedicated for the mentioned cell lines. It was also revealed that mouse and human osteoblasts differ in the cellular response to the fabricated scaffold. Thus, the use of at least two various cellular models is recommended to carry out a reliable biological characterization of the novel biomaterial. These results demonstrate that the tested bone scaffold is a promising biomaterial for bone regeneration applications, however further biological and physicochemical experiments are essential to fully assess its biomedical potential.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the sensitivity of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) from the Rudnik Forest District on the selected meteorological elements and to develop a chronology of local tree-ring width and the annual sensitivity. Based on the analysis, the site chronology of silver fir was developed and the strength of the relationship between the climate components and the width of annual rings was calculated. In addition, we examined the degree of homogeneity of short-term incremental response, rated the representativeness of the chronology and climate signal strength. Having analysed the indicator years, namely 1932–2013, we concluded that the growth of firs was positively influenced mainly by air temperature in winter, and to a lesser extent, by precipitation in spring and summer. The main factors that limit its growth are cold winters, cool and low rainfall summers, and rainy springs.

The aim of the study was to examine reproductive and vegetative responses of ‘Growdena F1’ tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to use of potassium silicate fertilizer (as Silvit 15.0% SiO3) into reused peat substrate. Investigations were carried out at a greenhouse in 2013 and 2014. Tomatoes were treated with potassium silicate 2 times: immediately after tomato planting and a month later, at a rate of 0.11 g silicon (Si) per plant per year. Potassium silicate was applied as 1% water solution during plant irrigation. In each term, 200 ml Silvit of Si-containing solution per plant was applied. Plants unsupplied with potassium silicate serves as the control. The results showed that application of potassium silicate was able to improve tomato root healthiness, but only in the second year of the study, when the presence of pathogens in the tested substrate was high. The increases in marketable and total fruit yields as a result of use of potassium silicate was found only in 2014. It is concluded that at high multiplication of root pathogens in the substrate, the application of Sicontaining fertilizers do not protect sufficiently roots against infection.
